6 2022 Valentine's Day Opti Regatta Recap

by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

Over the weekend of February 12th & 13th, SPYC hosted the annual Valentine’s Day Opti Regatta. This year’s event was limited to Opti’s only with 270 sailors in attendance from all over the USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada. SPYC was well represented with 35 sailors competing in both the Gold Fleet and the Silver Fleet.

Mother Nature decided she was not going to cooperate and gave our SPYC Race Committee Team some tough conditions to deal with. Saturday started off with glassy conditions and unfortunately the breeze did not fill until well after 4:30 pm, which was too late start a race. On Sunday, a weak cold front passed over the area and the sailors were greeted with a shifty, building west wind.

Two races were sailed in the 200 boat Gold Fleet with Beck Brill from the Coconut Grove Sailing Club taking home the Jane Funsch Perpetual Trophy. Our top SPYC sailors were John Hartney in 21st place, Adam Mendelblatt in 37th, Christopher Shaffer in 48th, Tom Seibold in 61st, and Reid Mendelblatt in 67th.

On the 70 boat Silver Fleet course, the RC was able to get in 3 races in shifty conditions tucked in behind the new St. Pete Pier. The overall winner of the Silver Fleet was Henry Latell from the Hampton Yacht Club in Virginia. Our top finishers from SPYC were Ethan Cox in 5th place overall and Reece Bizouarn in 8th overall.

One week earlier the SPYC Opti RWB Race Team made the trek to Key Largo to compete in the Buccaneer Blast Regatta hosted by the Upper Keys Sailing Club. Thirteen sailors made the trip south to compete in the crystal clear waters of the Keys.

Our top performers were Blake Vincent in 15th overall followed closely by Tom Seibold in 21st. Also competing for SPYC were Chris Shaffer, Leah Abrams, Gloria Privis,

Bennett Lamb, Pete Caputo, Finn and Ethan Cox, Reece and Scarlett Bizouarn, Anna and Maija Andert, Thomas

and William Weidner, and Wesley Wood.

Our SPYC Laser Team has been hard at work competing in the US Open Sailing Series event hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Our top performer was Sophia Fuller finishing a strong 8th place overall in the Laser 4.7 fleet. Also competing were Guthrie Braun, Ethan Danielson, Kate Danielson, Sidney Moyer, Jack Carter, Anthony Smart, and Callen Burnett.

Headed to the Netherlands – Dorothy Mendelblatt at the helm and Ian Iles-Lee as crew on the Nacra 15 are the USA sole qualifier for the 2022 Youth World in The Hauge, The Netherlands. Mendelblatt and her crew captured first place after three days of racing in a variety of conditions off of Sand Key in Clearwater Beach, from February 4th-6th at the Clearwater West Marine US Open Sailing Series. The first four races were all bullets for Mendelblatt/ Iles-Lee. This positioned the team for success the balance of the regatta. They took home First Place with a 4-point lead over the 2nd place finisher. Congratulations Team Mendelblatt/Iles-Lee!

The weekend of January 29th-30th at SPYC hosted the Winter Foil Race Regatta. Gale force winds and small craft advisories prompted the Race Committee to have no racing on Saturday as the cold front came through the area. Sunday morning with temperatures near the high 40’s the Race Committee and competitors completed 4 races off the Skyway Eastside in Tampa Bay. The competitors were rewarded with Hot Pizza from the SPYC Beach Club delivered by one of our beach marshal volunteers. The top three finishers included Kia Calder, CA. - Tiger Tyson, Antigua - and Evan Hefferman, CA. Competitors represented the USA, Canada, Antiqua/Barbados, and Austria. Congratulations to the competitors and the Race Committee that braved the very cold temperatures and provided a "best in class event" for our sailors. Many thanks to our sponsors Elite Watersports, Flysurfer, and Northbeach Windsurfing, the SPYC Staff, Sailing Center, RC Volunteers and our competitors for their support of the event. Mark your calendars for April 22nd-24th for the Spring Foil Racing Regatta.

SPYC Annual Poker Run • Pass-a-Grille

What is a Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC. On Poker Run Day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off thier wellcurated boat themes. Upon arriving at the Club they will check-in and recieve a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop.

The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Dock Stop. It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with!

The FCYC cordially invites you to attend the "FCYC Adventure Weekend" taking place at....Fernandina Beach - Amelia Island, Fl.

Thursday, April 21st - Sunday, April 24th Come by BOAT...by CAR...by RV!

AMELIA ISLAND

Amelia Island is the southern most of the Sea Islands and the northern most of the Barrier Islands on Florida’s Atlantic coast. It is the only U.S. location to have been under the dominion of eight different flags and is known as the Isle of Eight Flags. It is said that the French visited, the Spanish developed, the English named, and the Americans tamed it.

FERNANDINA BEACH

The town of Fernandina Beach was officially established in 1811 and named for King Ferdinand VII of Spain. In 1853 the town site moved just south, and Fernandina Beach became the terminus of Florida’s first cross state railroad, constructed 1856–61 from Fernandina Beach to Cedar Key. In 1973 a 30-block downtown area was named an Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places due to the town’s preservation of late Victorian architecture. In 1987 the Historic District was expanded to include 50 blocks.

The original old town called Old Town Fernandina remains and celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2011. Many of these homes are now Bed and Breakfasts permitting visitors to experience a part of Old Town Fernandina’s history.

Centre Street, Fernandina’s “Main Street,” remains impressive with its brick main and side streets especially South 7th and North 6th with their historic mansions and cottages. Centre Street offers shopping, restaurants and taverns, bakeries, coffee cafes and most importantly excellent ice cream and fudge. All this can be found in a very walkable, short eight blocks. For the sports minded, Fernandina offers the beach, golf, fishing, sailing, river cruises, kayak excursions, and afterword a drink at the 1879 Palace Saloon, the oldest bar in Florida. Fernandina Beach is a wonderful town to visit hosting many venues for the traveler. April is a very busy month at Fernandina Beach, thus, reservations should be

made ASAP. Hampton Inn rooms are blocked for FCYC members through March 20th on a first come, first served basis; additionally boat dockage & RV space may become limited, so book early!

2022 Annual Vintage Motor Classic

by Andy Evans

The 2022 Show is over and what a day! We registered over 150 cars, then the wet cold weather came in, with the City telling us they may have to call it off! We all met at 6:30 am to hear the word, and finally a YES!!...we were good to go!

It takes several hours to set up the Field, so it was a scramble with our army of 75 volunteers. We secured the field in quick time to allow for sponsors arrival, then cars began to arrive. All were parked, although with slightly reduced number by 10:00 am and opened to the public. Despite the misty rain things brightened and dried up just in time for the judging and award presentation. Crowds built up quickly and there were many happy faces on all sides.

We had all classes from early 1920’s right up to 2021 Exotic Classics. There was a great turnout of British cars and some exciting Hot Rods and Resto-mods, Cobras, Corvettes, and classic American all contributing to an excellent show. Anyone wanting to see the show photos, go to our dedicated web site www.stpetemotorclassic.com and click on the Photos link.

Cobra

We supported two excellent local charities this year - The Louise Graham Regeneration Center and The Kind Mouse. (details on the shows web site). Thanks to the entrants, sponsors and some generous donations from our members we raised a record amount.

No sooner was this show finished then we immediately begin the planning process for 2023, and would love to hear from anyone interested in joining our committee. It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun that truly gives back personally and also reaffirms the Show and the Club as a foundation of St. Petersburg life. See you all next year!
