ST PETER’S 8-13 NEWSLETTER What a way to finish the Half Term House Singing competition and Platinum Jubilee Day! The children have had a wonderful day off timetable where each class has rotated around a series of Jubilee themed activities which the staff have put on for the different year groups. A massive thank you to Miss Shelley for co-ordinating the whole day and to all the staff who came up with creative activities. This was our first House Singing event since Covid and what a wonderful (and tuneful) celebration it was - congratulations go to Elmet House, who won it this year, singing "Let It Be”. We had a treat at the start of assembly when Rachael G from the Upper Sixth at the senior school came down to play her saxophone. Rachael won the East Coast Young Musician of the Year competition recently and is the leader of the 1318 swing band. It was great for our pupils to see the standard that is possible if you work hard and put the hours into practicing. Six of our J5 swimmers (along with 12 from the senior school) qualified to compete in the World Schools Swimming Championships at the London Olympic Aquatic Centre. After two fantastic days of racing against people from all over the world, the school came out with 50 medals! The J5s contributed 18 of those. Raya won an astonishing 7 gold to go with 2 silvers and 2 bronze medals, in both relays and individual events, with Alice hot on her heals also with 11 medals, 4 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze, again in both relay and induvial events. As well as relays, Phoebe won a brilliant individual bronze medal. All the swimmers contributed to a huge team effort which saw the girls clinch 2nd place overall. Raya H, Alice A, Clara McA, Clara R, Phoebe E and Charles T) should be very proud of themselves both in and out of the pool, and thank you to Mr Maycock and Miss Hopper for looking after them and supporting them.
Our Seven Key Values are Friendship, Trust, Wisdom, Compassion, Endurance, Humility, Hope Collaboration and Empathy... A plea from our gardeners - could you please ensure that your children aren’t using the rockery area outside of the front doors as a playground area. The rocks are not fixed in place for children to jump on them and the plants are also getting damaged. I attended a Prep School Heads’ conference entitled ‘Conscious Inclusion’ last week with some fantastic and thought-provoking speakers including Dr Malcolm Cocks & Dr Shona Apena Rogers from African Caribbean Education network, Shaun Dellenty an award-winning diversity lead, Bennie Kara from Diverse Educators, and Allan Gay from BAMEed. This will help to inform our work that we are doing across St Peter’s 2-18 on the back of the data from Inclusion Labs. Laura Castle from YorkMix radio came to school this week to record their “Test the Teacher” monthly competition. J1 and J2 were the audience whilst I had to do a cup stacking task followed by a general knowledge quiz. It was great fun but there is a reason why no-one ever approaches me to join the staff pub quiz team… I hope you have a restful Half term, whatever that involves, and look forward to seeing the children in a week’s time ready for a busy final 5 weeks of the school year. Each of the J2 classes visited the National Railway Museum to look at how machines work to enrich their work in English. They had to think of onomatopoeic words to describe the sounds and similies for the movement. St Peter’s 8-13, York, YO30 7WA www.stpetersyork.org.uk Registered Charity Number: 1141329
