Christmas Term

ST PETER’S 8-13 NEWSLETTER I hope you managed to have a break with your family over Half Term. It promises to be a very busy 5 weeks in the run up to the Christmas holidays. Mr Harvey ran a House computing competition and has made a fabulous trophy on the 3D printer. It took 3 days to print and congratulations goes to York House on winning it. We start our House Quiz competition next week, which Mrs Lees is running. We held our Remembrance Day service yesterday morning, with Major General (Retired) John Stokoe, former Commander UK Land Forces, speaking at the service. Ethan W in J5 played the trumpet magnificently from the Chapel balcony in what was a very poignant moment. The tradition at St Peter’s is that as we leave the service we all pass the Book of Remembrance and place our poppies onto it. By the time the senior school pupils have done this too the book is buried under a mountain of poppies, linking current pupils to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. You will no doubt have seen some striking new figures around the campus in recent days. It was decided last November to create a competition for pupils at 13-18 to design a Remembrance Day Memorial for the school. Dronfield pupils Hannah C and Hope S created the winning design: a series of silhouettes representing those who have served across the forces both in the past and present day. As part of the DT Department’s MAKERSPACE group, a team of eleven pupils volunteered and worked together to create the figures. A working group was created to oversee the project, including Harry Gration (Old Peterite President), as the project has been partially funded by the Old Peterite Club. Old Peterite Arthur Holmes, played the key role in the manufacture of the figures, and his company C&O Powder Coatings have been central in providing guidance and expertise throughout the design process. Our Archivists and CCF staff have carefully researched, collated and organised the list of Old Peterites who gave their lives in service of their country and they named on the stands listed alongside each figure. Throughout the month of November, the figures will be located around Campus. The figures and plaques will be lit each evening and I would encourage you to visit the figures using the map attached. Three figures, one representing each of the armed forces were moved to the Horseshoe for the Remembrance Service and new oak memorial boards have also been placed in the Antechapel. Thank you to all the pupils and staff who have helped to make this outstanding project a reality. St Peter’s 8-13, York, YO30 7WA www.stpetersyork.org.uk Registered Charity Number: 1141329

Our Seven Key Values are Friendship, Trust, Wisdom, Compassion, Endurance, Humility, Hope Collaboration and Empathy... During Half Term, we received a casting call for auditions for children to take part in the live screening of The Snowman at York Minster. Run by Carrot Productions, this is a national event, where large venues are used to screen the Christmas favourite. Referred to by The Guardian, Sunday Times and The Telegraph as “one of the top family things to do at Christmas”, the film is accompanied by live music from musicians from the top orchestras across the country, and of course, a soloist for ‘Walking in the Air’. It was very short notice – the email went out on Thursday for auditions on Sunday, and I am so incredibly proud of all of the children who auditioned; to prepare a piece to audition performance in such a short space of time, and during half term, is an achievement in its own right. It was great to see so many people having a go. Rachel Whibley, Managing Director of Carrot Productions said “You must be very proud; the standard was incredibly high, and it was very hard to choose our final three”. Massive congratulations to Sam B, Arthur G and Noah, who will be following in the footsteps of many a wellknown treble, as they take to the stage in York Minster on December 11th, where they will each perform to a sold out audience. Amélie P in J4 is acting in a new Christmas movie called “Father Christmas is back” which was released on Netflix at the weekend. It’s a family Christmas comedy (PG-13) and stars John Cleese, Elizabeth Hurley, Caroline Quentin, April Bowlby and Kelsey Grammer. The film centres around four sisters who have re-united for the Christmas Holiday in a Yorkshire mansion. Amélie plays the main family’s daughter. You can view the trailer here. Today’s assembly was based around a quote from Snoopy: “To make a difference in someone’s life, you don’t have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful or perfect. You just have to care.”. I hope that you will see examples of your children looking for opportunities to do this at home, as well as here at school. Andy Falconer Head Twitter: @andyfalconer Instagram: @andyfalconer_

Unnamed Uniform There seems to be an increasing amount of unnamed uniform in the Lost Property cupboard, including many new items such as blazers. Can you please ensure everything is named, especially these expensive items, so that they can easily be returned when found around the school.

One Kind Word During the week of the 15th November, we will be celebrating Anti-Bullying Week. We will focus our assemblies, PSHE lessons and other activities along the theme of ‘One Kind Word’. We kickstarted this theme this week, with a focus on kindness, and the pupil ambassadors have created a kindness wall of words for display in the foyer today, to help encourage us all to think and act kindly. Pupils in J3-5 are also going to be doing lessons and an online survey about diversity and inclusion, based on resources from Inclusion Labs, an organisation we are working with this year. On Friday 19th November, we would like everyone to wear odd shoes and odd socks, along with the school uniform, as a way of expressing our differences and celebrating that we are all unique. We are creating a kindness wall for everyone to add to on Saturday 13 November in the foyer.
