ST PETER’S 8-13 NEWSLETTER What a wonderful first week it has been. We held our Thursday Chapel service in York Minster yesterday, walking all the children there and back. Tristan in J5 played the most beautiful solo piece on his clarinet prior to the service and then Canon Vicky, who is the Precentor and also one of our Governors, then spoke to us about the importance of music not just in worship but life generally. A large group of pupils were confirmed by the Archbishop of York at a special service during the Easter holidays in York Minster, having had their confirmation classes in school during last term. A big thank you to the Minster choristers as they had a heavy schedule of services to sing at during Holy Week. Thank you to those who donated to our appeal to buy a second hand minibus to drive out all of the donated dry goods to Poland, for distribution to Ukrainian refugees. The minibuses then stay out there and are used to help ferry families across the border. We actually managed to raise enough money to buy three minibuses, which is just incredible! If you cycle to school you many have noticed that we have moved our cycle racks further into the heart of the school to make it much harder for opportunist thefts – fingers crossed.

Our Seven Key Values are Friendship, Trust, Wisdom, Compassion, Endurance, Humility, Hope Collaboration and Empathy... The St Peter’s Boat Club dinner is fast approaching and a great opportunity to meet other people who are interested in rowing in what is always a very sociable evening with a wonderful afterdinner speaker. Further details are on the next page. Some sad news is that Mr Chris Edwards, our Assistant Director of Music, is leaving at the end of the term to move back to Dorset – the pull of the South West has proven even stronger than beautiful York. We are currently advertising for a replacement but he will be hugely missed.

In assembly this morning I was talking to the children about what St Peter’s 2-18 is all about. Our mission to prepare pupils for confident, successful and fulfilled adult lives where they will make a positive impact on their world. I then unpacked what this looks like day to day through the School’s Four Pillars (Qualifications, Skills, Interests and Values) and how our key skills, learning habits and key values all fit together to give them the keys for life and the confidence to turn them. We watched two of our School videos which you can watch here: 2-18 and 8-13. Congratulations to the U11 boys who won the England Hockey In2Hockey North East of England finals. They needed to win their final match by 5 goals which they managed to do! Please remember that Exeat this half term is Saturday 14 May. Andy Falconer Head

One of our J5 pupils, Max, has spent the last three months making the most incredible full size Iron Man helmet, on his 3D printer, including an electrical mechanism that opens the front at the touch of a button. It is a wonderful example of both creativity (he learnt how to do it through watching YouTube videos) and perseverance (it didn’t all go to plan!). The end wall of the reception area is now covered in stunning Japanese themed art work from J2. If you get a chance to have look, especially if you are a J2 parent, please do.

Petersport 2022 - Monday 15 - Friday 19 August 2022 Online bookings will be taken for this exciting week of sport, crafts and cookery shortly. The event is open to children currently in Years 3-8. Friends and relations of Peterites are warmly invited to join us for a week of fun.

Junior Duke Gold Award Alex from J2X is the first pupil at St Peter's to complete the Junior Duke gold award. He completed seven challenges including a wide range of skills such as budgeting, washing the dishes, ICT and even baked a splendid loaf of bread. He says he 'particularly enjoyed the music task and is hoping to take on the platinum award next.

Mental Health Awareness Week This year between 9th and 15th May it is Mental Health Awareness week (hosted by Mental Health Foundation), the theme is loneliness. We are aiming to use this week to explore the impact of loneliness and look at our role in the community and making connections with others to combat loneliness. In order to strengthen our role in the community we would like to support York City of Sanctuary (York City of Sanctuary | Building a culture of hospitality for people seeking sanctuary) who are putting together welcome packs for primary aged children between 5 and 11 years old. These packs will be distributed to children who are seeking sanctuary in our beautiful city. Items such as books, exercise books and stationery would be gratefully received. We will collect the items donated in the foyer at school reception and then ask the pupils to write a postcard to go with the items; to be placed in each pack to welcome a child to York and remind them that they are not alone.
