activity and sport for children’, demonstrates children and young people’s activity levels continue to be negatively impacted by the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic at a time when getting active is more important than ever for their mental and physical wellbeing. Positively, the results provide further evidence that active children have higher levels of mental wellbeing and illustrate the role sport and physical activity can play in supporting them amid rising levels of loneliness and declining mental health during the pandemic. We also know that active children do better at school in attainment and achievement, so there's a dual benefit to taking part amid ongoing uncertainty. In general, there were lower activity levels when there were more coronavirus restrictions in place, which illustrates the importance of protecting and supporting sport and physical activity opportunities in schools and the other organised sport in children and young people's lives. Overall, children and young people are doing fewer activities than they were before the pandemic. Team sports fell before a partial recovery in the latter part of the year. Swimming is the activity that's seen the biggest drop overall and there are worrying drops in swimming ability among primary school children. I am delighted to report that despite this being a problem across the country, it is not a reflection of the Physical Education and Co-curricular offering at St Peter’s 2-18; the children are extremely fortunate with the opportunities that will be on offer throughout their learning journey at St Peter’s. I look forward to seeing the Reception children at swimming tomorrow and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

effort and I am sure you would join me in congratulating the staff for their tremendous work. My thanks to the catering team who provided refreshments and the Estates team who helped prepare all the performing spaces. Thank you to the IT team who organised the live streaming of these productions to parents and grandparents who are living and working in the UK, Europe, Australia and Saudi Arabia (just the countries we knew about) who accessed our performances via this platform. Finally thank you to Mrs Hayden. The music in all the performances was outstanding and she has rehearsed with all the children in school learning all the songs to the productions. Next week we have our Christingle Service in the school chapel, unfortunately we are unable to have parents at this event. On Thursday Sophia, Lizzie D, and Lizzie K-L with Mrs Clarke and Mrs Bateson visited the charity offices of the Children’s Congenital Heart Unit at Joseph's Well delivering gifts and craft kits that the children created in school. They have created a video so that the children who receive the kits can scan a QR code and watch instructions on what to do with the kit. This is our school charity this year and there will be more charity initiatives throughout the remainder of the year. Thank you to Mrs Clarke and Mrs Bateson for sorting this and to all of you for your generous donations which packed the minibus and were gratefully received. Next week we have the Christingle Service, House Singing Competition, Christmas Activity Day and Christmas Lunch. What an exciting end to the term! Tomorrow sees the last sport fixtures of the term at the Senior section of the school. I have the privilege to coach sport to the St Peter’s 13-18 children. Every week it is wonderful to see sports fixtures in hockey, rugby, netball, rowing, volleyball, squash, swimming, badminton and tennis throughout this term. I am involved with the hockey programme and there are over 8 teams playing on Saturday afternoons and training three times a week. This is same for rugby at St Peter’s 13-18. Additionally, children can choose a range of other physical activities if they don’t want to participate in these sports including running, yoga and dance. The children across St Peter’s 2-18 are very active and physical activity is strongly promoted in school. The report, published yesterday from Sport England, ‘Covid-19 challenges highlight importance of physical

MONDAY

What a week it has been at St Peter’s 2-8, Christmas has certainly arrived! On Monday and Tuesday the children in Years 1, 2 and 3 performed their Christmas plays to their parents in the Memorial Hall. Year 1 performed ‘Ralph the Dinodeer’, Year 2 performed ‘Bah Humbug!’ and Year 3 performed ‘Cinderella and Rockerfella’. The children were sensational; they sang, acted and danced throughout all three plays with so much confidence and with huge smiles on their faces. On Wednesday morning it was the turn of Nursery who performed ‘Away In A Manger’. The children also sang several Christmas songs and had their premiere showing of the Conkers Christmas film. This performance was stunning; the children loved performing once again to a packed audience in the Rayson Room. They were so confident, and you wouldn’t have thought that the children were 2, 3 and 4 years old. Huge congratulations to all the Nursery children. On Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning the Reception children performed ‘On a Starry Night’ in the Rayson Room. This was an original script based on the Christmas story with songs from Take That, Shaggy, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Marvyn Gaye, Mariah Carey and The Monkees. The children were amazing and once again loved performing to a full house in the Rayson Room. The link for all the performances and accompanying films can be found in the covering email with the newsletter link. It was wonderful to have a real-life audience for the first time in two years as the children loved performing to them all. My thanks to the parents, grandparents and supporters of the school who created a fabulous atmosphere for the children and for following our Covid guidance. My thanks to the staff who wrote scripts, choreographed dance moves, directed the plays, created the sets and props, designed all costumes and worked incredibly hard to stage manage the plays whilst the children were performing. A phenomenal

Notice Board

On Thursday Mrs Bateson and Mrs Clarke took our house captains Joseph, Olivia M and Georgia along with Sophia, Lizzie and Lizzie to drop off the toys we have collected for our school charity the Children's Heart Surgery Fund. We also took craft kits complete with 'how to make' videos that the wellbeing champions filmed and that the children in hospital can access using a QR code. Lisa Williams from the charity told us that the wards will be full over Christmas with only one family member being allowed to visit each child due to Covid restrictions, so having a new toy or a craft kit may

just bring a little bit of Christmas magic for the children who have to spend their Christmas in hospital. She also told us that some of the children have been in hospital for a very long time, one 5 year old been in the hospital in Leeds for over 100 days waiting for a heart transplant. It was brilliant to visit the charity and we are planning for Lisa to come and do an assembly next term and we already have lots of ideas to support the Children's Heart Surgery Fund in 2022.

PARKING AND TRAFFIC IN SCHOOL There has been a recent increase in complaints regarding parking and driving at school pick up and drop off times from residents in Westminster Road and The Avenue. City of York Council have indicated that there may be a review of the parking times which could be reduced on both of these streets to combat inconsiderate parking and leaving engines idling. Please turn your engines off when waiting and do not block driveways. We also encourage you to consider car sharing, walking, cycling, public transport or “park and stride” to reduce traffic and pollution around the school.

MUSICAL NOTES

Wow, what a fabulously musical week it has been! I have been so proud of all the children this week. They have all performed with such confidence and courage from Nursery right through to Year 3! We have heard some fantastic singing and there have been great solos too. I can’t believe our children have the confidence to sing so well in front of such large audiences, they are amazing! I hope you all enjoyed the performances as much as I did?! Mrs Hayden

HEADLICE Please be aware that we have had headlice in Year 1. Please check your child’s head and treat accordingly. Please see the NHS guidance on treatment here.

Year 3 have been working extremely hard on their dodging skills in tag rugby and applying these skills to tag games. More recently they have been recapping how to pass the ball backwards to a teammate. Their passing skills are really progressing and next week we will be putting our skills into action in mini games. Have a look at our rising stars tackling the rugby

pass.

RECEPTION

What an amazing week we have had in Year One! We are bursting with pride after the Christmas plays and we are so proud of everyone for their performances. The children all sang beautifully and said their lines so confidently and with great expression. For their first ever show on a very big stage with a huge audience they did a brilliant job and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. We are in full Christmas swing this week and our classrooms are shining and sparkling with tinsel, paper chains and baubles. The children have been spreading Christmas cheer and kindness by making Christmas cards for their friends. There have been some brilliant designs such as pop-up cards, origami, painting and sketching. We have also enjoyed writing letters to Father Christmas this week. Some of the children chose to send him their Christmas list whilst others wanted to ask lots

YEAR 1 of questions such as: 'What do you eat for breakfast?' 'Are the reindeers ready?' 'What does the North Pole look like?' 'How do you get around the whole world in one night?'

A super week and we are looking forward to next week with lots of exciting activities and days ahead! Have a brilliant weekend everyone.

YEAR 1

YEAR 2

The festivities have been well and truly kicked off this week with our Year 2 Christmas performance! A huge well done to all of the children for finding their inner bravery when standing up on a huge stage in front of lots of grown-ups! Not only was this your first time on the big stage, but it was your first live performance since you were little ones in Reception- well done Year 2! We are very proud of you and thank you to your grown-ups for being a super audience and for creating a lovely atmosphere. We are looking forward to our next upcoming singing events, our Christingle service, house singing competition and Young Voices. This week, we have continued making traditional decorations for our classroom

Christmas trees such as nutcracker and sugarplum fairy peg dolls, pomanders, paper chains, cinnamon decorations and so on. In art, we made our own Christmas crackers, some even complete with snaps, hats and jokes! We decorated the exterior by taking inspiration from Victorian artist, William Morris, closely looking at his use of pattern and designs. We used potato printing to create shapes and repeating patterns - any excuse to use new mediums and get a little messy! Our highlight of the week has to be making our own gingerbread houses with stained glass windows! Well done on a very busy but fun-filled week Year 2, have a well deserved rest this weekend ready for more Christmas chaos next week.

What an incredible penultimate week it has been in Year Three. The highlight for us has definitely got to be our Christmas performances on Monday and Tuesday. The children have worked tirelessly for the past few weeks practicing their lines, learning songs and working on dances and actions to accompany them. We are incredibly proud of all of the children for putting on such a spectacular show. The expression, actions and enthusiasm really helped to bring ‘Cinderella and Rockefella’ to life and we know how much they all enjoyed getting up on stage to perform to their friends and

families. Thank you to our grown ups who helped to put costumes together and to our audiences for cheering us on! With Christmas just around the corner, we have started to get into the festive spirit in the classroom and have had great fun using this as a stimulus for our creative learning. Next week we are looking forward to our house singing rehearsals, Christingle and not forgetting the hotly anticipated Christmas Activity Day on Thursday!
