Amidst all of the challenges everyone is facing at this difficult time, you don’t need to look or search far for beautiful and inspirational moments. This week whilst watching the inauguration of Joe Biden, I was captivated by a young poet who many of you may have seen at the ceremony. Amanda Gorman, who wrote and performed "The Hill We Climb", was born in Los Angeles in 1998 and was raised by her mother with her two siblings, including a twin sister. Amanda Gorman grew up in an environment with limited television access and has described her young self as a "weird child" who enjoyed reading and writing. Amanda Gorman had a speech impediment during childhood and participated in speech therapy as she was growing up but doesn’t view her speech impediment as a disability, rather, she sees it as a gift and a strength. She wrote the poem in the weeks following the 2020 United States presidential election, with significant passages written on the night of 6th January, 2021, in response to the storming of the United States Capitol. "The Hill We Climb" was an enthralling performance capturing the power and promise of youth across the world. Her performance was incredibly compelling and positive, exploring how one can overcome challenges in life. All of us can note of her messages from her poem and if you missed it, you can watch it here: Amanda Gorman Poem Inauguration of Joe Biden. The children at St Peter’s and young people all
over the world can teach us so much and be a source of inspiration, especially in extremely difficult times; we all feel incredibly fortunate to work with children in schools. Many thanks to all of the children who entered our ‘Fascinating Facts’ film. It was wonderful to observe the children confidently recording their facts. We found out that hippos have pink milk, elephants are the only animal that can’t jump, kangaroos don’t trump, bumblebees can fly as high as the summit of Mount Everest, the longest chilli pepper is… and so many more. I would usually walk around school and see all the children’s art work displayed on the walls of the classrooms and hallways. Although the displays are now mainly virtual, on Google Classrooms, I continue to be impressed by the high standard and the creativity and effort the children put into their work. Some examples follow for all the year groups later on in the newsletter; from large scale painting and mark-making in Nursery all the way to mixed media jungle pictures inspired by Henri Rousseau in Year 3 via floating art and transient art using patterns in Reception, 3D robots in Year I and winter trees and habitats in Year 2. Well done to all the children for their hard work- the newsletter shows only some of the wonderful creations.
Finally, once again thank you for your kind emails and messages to our teachers, teaching assistants and support staff, who are doing a tremendous job in tough circumstances. Thank you for reminding us that, even when we are keeping apart to try to protect each other, we are still connected as a community. The children have continued to impress us in PE this week! In their Netball sessions, Years 1-3 explored some fun ball skill drills, practising passing the ball from one hand to the other and then challenging themselves to pass the ball around their waist and through their legs! The children amazed us with their co-ordination skills in completing these skills successfully. After working very hard with their ball skill drills, Year 1 learnt how to perform a Chest Pass with the Netball using the correct technique, making sure their fingers were positioned in the ‘W’ position before pushing the ball out from their chest with both hands. The children performed this new skill extremely well and we were very proud of how well they worked. In Years 2 and 3, the children built on the chest pass skills they had acquired last year, before progressing onto the shoulder pass. The children demonstrated excellent power and control of the ball in their shoulder passes, which was very encouraging to see. Year 3 then challenged themselves further to start practising the bounce pass. Very well done everyone! Reception have continued to develop their football skills during their games sessions. The children started the session by recapping their
ball stopping skills from last week’s lesson. It was great to see how much practice the children had put into mastering this skill. The children then learnt how to kick the ball to their family member using their instep, before progressing the skill further and challenging themselves to use a coned goal in order to improve the accuracy of their kicks. Well done Reception and all our helpers at home! Our Acorns used the fuzzy balls this week to balance on their head and hands then started to explore throwing and catching skills. Conkers continued to impress with their gymnastic shapes: straight, star, L shape, pike, straddle and tuck. Some of which can be seen below. Finally, in our core PE lessons this week, the children’s determination and endurance was once again tested with the introduction of our new fitness workout, featuring some old favourites such as the mummy kicks and Pikachu’s as well as some new additions e.g. shuffles and mountain climbers. The children’s enthusiasm throughout the workout was outstanding and it was brilliant to see everyone finishing hot and tired and looking forward to a well deserved rest!

NURSERY
Whatever life (or the weather) throws at us its always fun and laughter in Nursery!
our little pilots were measuring and estimating distance with their feet! There was lots of accurate measuring taking place. We have also been investigating the number 11! The children took over our role as teachers and have been checking some superheroes number work… I think Superman may have This week in phonics, our cheeky Inky has once again been up to been rushing his counting! Also in maths there has been lots of all sorts. He’s been a busy little mouse at the dentist and has fantastic adding happening. We have seen some super duper even been travelling off into space! We have been so impressed adding machines being created to help us! with the children’s sentence writing and we have been seeing some lovely extra little bits of writing and phonics happening at To round off an already fabulous week, the children have also home too. From writing letters, to signs for shops and cafés, to been busy in our Explore, Create and Investigate sessions. Not lots of sound and word games, including hunting around the only have they been producing the most fabulous transient BIG house and even going fishing! art but they have also been moving images in water! They must all be magicians to have done that! In maths we have been busy flying those paper aeroplanes again; our pilots are becoming very skilled throwers. This time A big thumbs up to all our little superstars this week!

Wow Reception children and parents! Another week during which you have made all the teachers so incredibly proud of you! We have seen the most amazing learning happening and there is clearly a lot of fun being had at home with your families.
Another busy week in Year 1 and WOW are we proud of you all! We continue to enjoy our text 'The Wild Robot'. In the chapters we have read this week Roz the robot learns to camouflage herself on a remote island to protect herself from many of the dangers she has faced. We have been learning all about amazing animals and their camouflage skills. We have researched our favourite camouflage animals
YEAR 1
and made a Chatterpix all about them - these made us all laugh lots! We have also been camouflaging ourselves in our homes, which was lots of fun. We have also been using adjectives to describe Roz the robot and writing in secret emoji codes! You all continue to make us smile every day and we miss you all so much. Year 1 you are truly amazing!
YEAR 1 cont
gnomes have made an appearance in fraction work, English work and- alwaysin the morning when Miss Jeffrey and Mrs Hall arrive at work!
YEAR 2
As Year 2 settle down into a routine of online learning, Mrs Hall and Miss Jeffrey have been amazed at how creative and studious they can be! They have all been fascinated by our hibernation project and have shown that they can use the internet, books and even grown-ups to ask, in order to find information out about their chosen animal. We have all been sharing this information in our Zoom lessons and Miss Jeffrey and I have learnt so much about bats, hedgehogs, tortoises and dormice - to name but a few!
Art this week focused on winter trees and habitats. It is always exciting doing art in Year 2, even when it is not with the rest of the class. This week the pictures sent in were beautiful and all individual. What we particularly love to see is that whole families often take part! In these strange times, it is always cheering to see our In maths, the week has been all about fractions, happy children, if only on a screen, chatting to their fractions, fractions! We used food to make practical friends and enjoying the lessons. All the Y2 staff investigations on Monday and then practised finding would like to wish the Y2 children a happy, restful fractions of shape and then quantities. Our naughty weekend!
Year Three have been totally absorbed in their learning this week. We started by looking at the famous French artist Henri Rousseau and learnt about his life. He was so passionate about painting that he gave up his job and gave music lessons to support himself! Feeling inspired, we used our imaginations to create our own jungle scenes, just like Rousseau!
YEAR 3
homes for the animals from our story.
In our text, we read about how Mowgli grows up living life with the pack. We were keen to find out where all of this happened, so we started looking at the setting of the story; the Seoni Hills in India. We researched India and found out lots of interesting facts. Did you know that India produces the most milk in the world? In Maths we had been focussing on weight. We have been estimating the weight of objects in our houses. We have compared weights and then we combined our skills to have a go using our skills to bake snake nests!
We then went on to link our maths work on weight to making some snakes nests using our skills. We accurately weighted our ingredients to create our edible nests - a delicious treat! This then led us onto creating Phew! Another super busy week with so much to be proud of Year 3, keep working hard our own habitats. The children thoroughly enjoyed collecting materials and making new everyone!
