The Beast from the East has continued to provide wintery conditions for us all. It was so lovely to see so many children spending time outside in the snow in between their online lessons, whether at school or at home. Watching the children reminded me of this beautiful short film of slides, somersaults and pure panda joy at Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC. BBC - Pandas Playing in Snow. Today Year 1 had their ‘ROSCARS’ (Robot Oscars). All of the children in Year 1 created brilliant films and animations representing scenes from chapters of their theme book. The films were brilliant so much creativity on display and you can see a number of them here. Roscars 1 Roscars 2 Roscars 3 Roscars 4 Roscars 5 Roscars 6 The premieres of these films were this morning in the Year 1 classrooms. The children baked robot themed cakes and mixed mocktails and were dressed up in their smartest suits and most beautiful dresses. Well done Year 1- you were all amazing. A

school and away from screens. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the inspirational teachers, teaching assistants, staff from across the school and support staff for their incredible work for the children in the school. The children at St Peter’s 2-8 are very fortunate to have such talented members of staff looking after them. I have shared this link before but our staff all believe in this inspirational Ted talk by Rita Pierson, Every Child Needs a Champion. All our children have many champions at school. Have a fabulous half term. I look forward to hearing about all the children’s adventures. Thank you for your continued support, the letters of support and gifts for all the staff at breaktimes throughout the last half term. With best wishes,

Notice Board MUSICAL NOTES

Monday 1st March will mark the start of our Book Week which will incorporate a World Book Day celebration on Thursday 4th March. World Book Day is a huge annual celebration of books and reading, and one of our favourite activities as part of this day is to dress up as our favourite characters. Year on year, we’re seeing a huge increase in the amount of costumes available to buy from large retailers which is contributing to the big problem of textile waste in the UK, so this year our costume theme is ‘Recycle, Reuse and Create’. Instead of buying a new costume, be imaginative and creative and make one using items you already have at home. There will be a special World Book Day assembly on Thursday 4th March for the children to showcase their costumes with prizes for the most imaginative and creative costumes.

YEAR 2 Year 2 will be making musical instruments from recycled objects when we come back after half term. Items to save over the holiday and use for the lessons could be: •

Plastic cartons, such as for cream

Tissue boxes

Paper straws or wooden lolly sticks

Strong elastic bands

Paper and felt tips

Strong cardboard boxes Thank you! Mrs Hall and Miss Jeffrey

Wow, what an incredible bunch of musical superstars you have all been this half term! I have just tried to count how many new songs we have learned between us and had to stop when I reached 40! The children have kept me smiling, it has been fantastic to watch them all singing their hearts out in our Zoom lessons! There have been 430 individual music lessons this half term, so a huge thank you to all our instrumental teachers, parents at home and our teaching assistants in school who have enabled our children to continue learning their instruments. I am really looking forward to getting back to school so we can hold our concerts as I can't wait to hear how the children have progressed this term. I hope you all have a lovely break next week, Mrs Hayden.

This week in the Big Weekly Challenge the children were tasked with writing a kind message in a heart for Safer Internet Day so we could flood the internet with kindness and make it a happier place to be. Thank you to all the children who got involved to help us to achieve this. We hope you enjoy our second challenge of the week and find lots of fun activities to do away from your screens this half term!

It has been a very busy and fun-filled week in PE for the last week of the half term. In their Netball lessons, the children in Years 1-2 have been working on their movement and agility skills, using balloons that they threw up in the air. The children tested their agility and speed by attempting to run around a triangle. They created the triangle on the floor using objects they had in their homes, before the balloon hit the floor. In order to challenge themselves further, the children then added more objects to create a square course to run around before the ball hit the floor. This was a particularly tricky skill, as it also tested the children’s coordination and spatial awareness. Everyone showed superb perseverance with this tricky task and it was amazing to see some children thinking of ways they could adapt the task to make it more difficult!

The Acorns did an amazing job of investigating how they could move using hula-hoops in their PE lesson. There were some very creative ideas including rolling the hoop along the floor, skipping through it and even using it as a big steering wheel!

PE

The Conkers really enjoyed incorporating the gymnastics shapes they have learned into their Superhero tag game! All the children were brilliant at freeing their classmates by mirroring each others’ shapes. They also displayed excellent In their Football lessons this week, Reception recapped their knowledge and memory of all our actions in the bean game. dribbling skills before creating their own obstacle course using Super work Conkers! objects they found around their houses. The children tried to control their ball to dribble it around their course. The children Finally, in our fitness lessons this week, we went back in time also included a shooting zone at the end of their course and to the very colourful 1980s! Everyone looked jazzy in their performed some amazingly accurate and powerful shots at colourful outfits and headbands! The 80s music provided the their goal. Once they had mastered their courses, some perfect soundtrack to our new workout, which included some children endeavoured to complete their course whilst balancing difficult new exercises such as the down-ups and our an object on their head! Very impressive! The children also inchworms, which tested our flexibility! We really enjoyed our demonstrated excellent leadership skills when teaching their 80s fitness sessions and hope the children enjoyed it as much course to their family members. Well done Reception! as we did! Awesome work everyone!

RECEPTION

The end of our half term of learning from home and we couldn't be more proud of our incredible Reception children. You are all our learning superheroes! We have seen so many photos and videos of them learning at home being resilient, resourceful, collaborative and reflective. A huge well done to all our children and their adults for all the hard work they have put in. The children have clearly been having a lot of fun at home. There has been so much amazing play happening and lots of learning!

answer 14. We have seen the Reception children using lots of different tools to help them to check their adding and subtracting - pegs, Lego men, number lines, Numicon, pasta, princesses, sweets...so many! As well as our number of the week, we have also been practicing our halving of numbers and comparing the heights of different objects around our house. As it was Valentines day we also decided to make our own love potions using our understanding of capacity and our measuring skills. I wonder who the Reception children gave their love potion to? In our Explore, Create and Investigate lesson we have been busy celebrating Chinese New Year. Mrs Bromley taught us how to make some beautiful Chinese lanterns! The children created In our final week we have been recapping all those them with their own decorations and designs. Mrs Phase 3 graphemes. Reception are doing so well with Morrison and Mrs Coyle also retold the story of how their sounds! We have played lots of games and the 12 animals of Chinese New Year got their had lots of fun. We have been playing memory games years and told us about a fun game we could play against our mummies and daddies, we have been drawing the different animals on each others backs! I playing splat the sound, run and shout the sound...all wonder how well you collaborated with your sorts. In maths we have been investigating our mummies and daddies... number of the week. Can you guess? It is two more than 12 but 1 less than 15...you guessed it...14! We All of the Reception team hope you have the most have transformed into teachers and have been amazing holiday and have lots of fun playing. We checking some number sentences with the can't wait to see you after half term!

Phew Year1- it’s half term! What a busy term you have had and how impressed we have been by your resilience and resourcefulness creating your homemade classrooms and navigating Zoom! We started back in January with our new book 'The Wild Robot' and we have followed Roz on her adventures making friends amidst danger and hardship. This week you have been busy creating your very own films which we watched at our ‘Roscars' ceremony this afternoon. We were amazed and astounded by the brilliant films that you wrote,

directed, narrated and produced, complete with sound effects, scenery and speech bubbles. Steven Spielberg couldn't have done it better himself! We watched our films whilst sipping mocktails and eating our Robot themed cakes, dressed in our best finery and from the comfort of our armchairs. What a razzle dazzle way to end our first half term! Have a well -deserved break Year1- you have earned it and see you soon to find out what happens next to our intrepid robot hero.

YEAR 1

YEAR 1 cont.

What a brilliant final week we have had! The children have managed to dig out those remaining bits of resilience and positivity to push through the last week of this half term. One area the children have been working incredibly hard in is English with their persuasive writing. We have done tons of research and collecting of ideas to put forward a proposal to the Council regarding Forest School. We have been learning about the impacts cutting down trees has on the atmosphere and wildlife (with the help of the wonderful Sir David Attenborough) and the children have really impressed us with the discussions and thoughts this has inspired in them. We have been blown away by their passion and just how persuasive their writing has been!

YEAR 2

In maths, we have been revising addition using a range of strategies. We have been using number lines, partitioning and column addition. We have also been investigating the relationship between addition and subtraction through number fact families. In Art Wednesday this week, we have been looking at the work

of famous Yorkshire artist David Hockney and taken inspiration from his skills when painting the same views in different seasons. As always, the children produced some beautiful pieces and it is always wonderful to see other family members getting involved. In science, we investigated chemical reactions by creating our own mini explosions in a bag! We combined bicarbonate of soda and vinegar which created a gas, the gas had nowhere to go in the sealed bag which caused the bag to pop! A very easy experiment which you can try yourselves at home. Mr Gnome has been up to his usual daily tricks, but we are pleased to report he has found a home just in time for the school holidays! He has already had a housewarming celebration with his buddies (socially distanced of course!) but we are sure he will continue to cause mischief in one way or another. A huge well done to you all, children and grown-ups, for working tremendously hard this term. You have kept us smiling every day and we feel so lucky to be your teachers! Enjoy a wonderful, relaxing half term break.

YEAR 2 CRITICAL WORKER CHILDREN The children have had a brilliant debate about balancing the need for building new homes against preserving our natural world. They all spoke clearly and passionately representing both sides of the debate, listening to other people’s opinions carefully. They could only speak when they had the (cardboard) microphone. They have supported this with some great

pieces of writing. Today we had a priceless comment representing the thoughts of young children living through the pandemic. While we were watching a video of David Hockney to support our art work, one child pointed out he was “pretty old” to be followed by another child saying, “I bet he’s been vaccinated!”

YEAR 3

We have had a great time monkeying around this week in Year 3! Our theme has been monkeys and the children have really enjoyed researching these fascinating primates! Did you know there are more than 260 species of monkeys and the smallest monkey is only 25cm? The children created their own Monkey Top Trump cards and had lots of fun playing with them virtually during our Zoom lessons! Wednesday afternoon saw us enjoying some screen free time baking delicious monkey cupcakes and as you can see everyone turned out to be the star baker! We used our observational drawing skills to create some beautiful monkey pictures, and we were very impressed with the level of detail in their pictures. We took our art lesson outside on

Thursday afternoon and used our imagination and creativity to produce fantastic monkey collages using natural objects. We ended the week with a whole year group quiz and received a special message from a famous film critic who had seen our wonderful films that we created as part of storytelling week last week! He gave us all a 5* review and told us he had high hopes for us becoming Bafta winning film producers in the future! We are so very proud of all the children for all their hard work over the term; they have shown excellent resilience and resourcefulness, and we are sure you will agree that everyone has been a Learning Superhero. We would like to thank you all for the wonderful support you have shown throughout the term to ensure each child continues to learn during these difficult times. We hope you have a wonderful, well deserved half term holiday!
