You can follow us A warm welcome to the start of the summer term at St Peter’s 2-8 and a particular welcome to our new nursery starters who joined us this week.

I trust that you have had a relaxing Easter break, it certainly has been lovely to hear about the adventures the children have had over the past three weeks. Over the holiday the school ran another popular activity week attended by over 100 children each day. Staff led the children in a range of activities, and I know they thoroughly enjoyed the week. Huge thanks to all the staff who led the activities in school and to Miss Flockhart who organised this fabulous week of fun and activities.

It has been an incredibly busy first week back, the children throughout the school have experienced so much and this is evident in the write ups by the teachers and photographs throughout this newsletter.

On Monday as part of their big reveal the Year 2 children were put through their paces in several diving and swimming activities. This was to complete their explorer training inspired by their story, ‘The Secret Explorers and the Lost Whales’. I am told they all

This week we were joined by Ms Hardy, who is a PGCE student from Bangor University. Ms Hardy spent time in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 and has thoroughly enjoyed her placement in the school. My thanks to the staff and children for making Ms Hardy so welcome, I know she has left us this afternoon with lots of ideas to further develop her teaching practice. We have so much to pack into the next nine weeks, and I hope you have noted the dates in the online calendar, that can be found on our website. The Friends of St Peter’s 2-8 have organised two large events this term. Clif Fest which is a summer fair for children and families across school, this will be held on Sunday 26th June and it would be great if the school community could pen this date into their diaries. They have also organised a Charity Ball on the evening of Saturday 11th June. All proceeds for this will be for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund so please do reserve this date too.

FRIDAY

One of our parents has kindly volunteered to deliver a series of Forest School sessions for each of the Year 1 classes over the next few weeks. Mr Tickle, who has a passion for bushcraft, led a fabulous session with the children from 1A during which the children learned how to create shelters by following the instructions given, make a campfire and use their knot tying skills to make stick men, stars, etc. As you can imagine the children were utterly enthralled with the session and had a wonderful afternoon. The staff were equally thrilled not only to learn new bushcraft skills but also for the mug of freshly brewed ground coffee that Mr Tickle made them all on the campfire. I gather it far surpassed the coffee they have access to in school! Next week it will be the turn of 1C and 1E who are already excited having now heard how much fun 1A had at Forest School. My huge thanks to Mr Tickle for all the preparation he put into the session, and we look forward to more excitement next week.

THURSDAY

In Monday’s assembly it was lovely to congratulate last term's House Captains; Lottie Wass, Norman Norza and Tom Blomfield and present new badges to Tilly Smith (Monk), Annabel Wong (Micklegate) and Noah Lofthouse (Walmgate). I know they will be wonderful House Captains this term.

School Council

WEDS

On Monday the children were very excited for the grand reveal of their learning theme this term and they had good reason to be. The theme this term is Amazing Adventures, Incredible Explorers and I know the staff have lots of things planned over the coming weeks to support this theme. Once again, the classrooms are looking wonderful, and I hope you were able to take the opportunity to visit them this morning before the start of the school day. My huge thanks to the staff who create these exciting learning spaces during the holidays to inspire and motivate the children.

Our highlight of the week, particularly for the children in Year 2 and Year 3 was taking part in the Young Voices Concert on Thursday evening at Sheffield Arena. The children joined over 5000 other children from the local area to form the most fabulous choir who sang their hearts out all night. There were performances from Twinnie, a singer songwriter from York and Ruti who won The Voice on ITV. Both performers were inspired to become singers after participating in a Young Voice Concert when they were only 7 and 8 years old. The breath-taking Urban Strides a street dance group performed a number of acts and arranged all the dance moves for the children to practice prior to the concert and Beatbox Collective who are the World Champions in their art of beatboxing entertained us all with their unbelievable talents. The performance was all pulled together by Craig McLeish who was the Musical Director and David Lawrence, world renowned conductor. All the children loved taking part in this stunning spectacle, singing with boundless enthusiasm and demonstrating some incredible dance moves throughout the evening. All the staff that attended the concert were immensely proud of them, they represented the school quite brilliantly. Huge thanks to the staff who attended the concert and a massive congratulations to Mrs Hayden who had prepared the children so well. Thank you also to the many parents who made the trip to Sheffield Arena, supporting the children and throwing yourselves into the singing and dancing along with the rest of us. I hope you all had as much fun as we did? I know there have been many tired faces in school this morning but everyone has told me it was definitely worth the late night!

Notice Board MUSICAL NOTES Wow, what a fantastic start we have had to this term. Years 2 and 3 represented the school at Young Voices on Thursday at the Sheffield Arena. They joined 5000 children singing a selection of songs from Orff’s Carmina Burana to medleys of favourite classics from the Lion King and The Muppets. The children were so excited to finally get to sing at the arena, it has been such a long wait with postponements along the way. The children were a real credit to the school, they all knew

the words to the songs and had some amazing dance moves. The children especially enjoyed hearing their parents attempt at being beatboxers with The Beatbox Collective, and we all loved the audience moves dancing along to Fat Boy Slim with Andy Instone and the Urban Striders! So many children have told me already this morning how much they loved the concert and as Freya A said “It was definitely worth the wait!”

YOUNG VOICES

SCHOOL COUNCIL On Monday afternoon in our final meeting of the term the children took it over to ST Peters and sorted out our very first mixed bag of unique recycling .

A big Thank you and well done to our team of school councillors

SCHOOL PLAYING FIELDS It is lovely to see children playing on the fields after pick up now that there is more daylight and the weather is warming up. Please could we ask that you do not allow your children to climb in the trees or on any equipment. Thank you.

It has been lovely to have all the children back into school this week, showing great enthusiasm towards their new sports this term. The children have also been filling me in with their exciting stories over the Easter holidays.

PE

The children from Reception to Year 3 have started Athletics in their Core PE lessons this term. This week’s focus was on sprinting technique. The children took part in Miss Flockhart’s sprinting experiment, to detect what the most effective sprinting technique should look like. The children discovered the following three key points: 1. Moving their hands from cheek to cheek. 2. Light on their feet whilst driving their legs forwards. 3. To ensure they’re focussing on looking forwards, not side to side. After practicing the most efficient sprinting technique Miss Flockhart timed the children for either a 25m sprint or a 50m sprint. Miss Flockhart was extremely impressed with how well the children sprinted and their Rita Resilience they demonstrated throughout all of the races! The majority of the children improved their time from last year, some by 2 seconds which is a fantastic achievement!

Nursery have focused on their rolling skills this week. They started by sitting on the floor, pushing their ball out in front to roll. They then had to chase after the ball to stop it and bring their ball back to the starting line to have another go. The children then progressed this skill onto rolling their ball to a partner, whilst moving back to make it slightly harder. The children then tried to roll their ball from a kneeling position. Finally, Conkers progressed the skill on to a standing position, ensuring they bent their knees in a lunge position to allow the ball to roll along the floor to their partner. Miss Flockhart was incredibly proud how quickly the children progress their rolling technique. Year 1 to Year 3 have started cricket in their games lessons. With the focus being fielding for Year 1 and 2. Creating a tunnel with their legs for their partner to underarm roll through. If the partner with the ball managed to roll the ball under the tunnel, they received 1 point. This game created a fantastic atmosphere and it was really interesting to watch the children’s tactics with their partner. Year 3 worked on an overarm bowling technique. Their challenge was to practice the technique with a partner whilst they provided one another feedback on the stages of overarm bowling. The children were then given two skittles as a target to try and knock down. It was brilliant to see the children supporting one another in their partners and congratulating one another when they managed to hit a skittle down. Finally, Reception are taking part in teamwork games during their Games lessons this term. This week they focused on a game called treasure island. This allowed the children to revisit their throwing and catching skills, kicking and dribbling skills. It was fantastic to see the children communicating with one another to work as a team. The children have had a busy first week back settling into their new sports. Miss Flockhart has been incredibly impressed how they have taken on difficult challenges within their stride and cannot wait to see what they can achieve in the coming weeks.

ACORNS

It has been so good to welcome the Acorns back after the Easter holiday. We hope you all had a lovely break. Three new Acorns have joined us this term and they have settled so beautifully already. We made the most of the sunshine and took a stroll down to Forest School. We spotted some beautiful flowers and found some dandelions to blow. The children have enjoyed playing schools in Nursery and we have some very talented

teachers in the making! The dinosaurs have been washed with soap and painted with water. We have enjoyed sorting toys into different colours and exploring the mark making area with various different mediums to create with. We have loved getting into the groove with ‘dough disco’. The children’s fine and gross motor skills are being taken to a new level! It has been a great start to the term.

Welcome back! We've come back to Nursery full of stories about our Easter adventures, from fabulous days out around York to holidays to other countries. We've seen friends and family, travelled on trains and planes, enjoyed sun, sea and snow!

YEAR 1 Back into a new term with a new theme and enthusiasm of life beneath the sea! The Year 1 children arrived back to school after the Easter break to discover their new learning environments that have been inspired by the sea and the 'Manfish' Jacques Cousteau. The children have spent the week exploring the new provision and challenges! It is fantastic to have you all back!

In provision, the children have been creating the layers of the ocean, designing and creating a waterproof outfit as well as inventing their own deep sea creature with a brief and criteria! We played 'Fish Guess Who!' As we wrote down funny adjectives to describe some truly unique fish! The children have been exploring measurement by measuring using standard and

non-standard units of measurement and tools. 1A have been busy in the forest building their own tents - all thanks to a parent preparing an amazing forest session for them! The children used all the skills of the school's Learning Superheroes and demonstrated such resilience and collaboration as they worked in teams to make a tent/camp for them to all fit in! Stay tuned to see 1E and 1C's tents over the next few weeks! On Friday morning, all the children worked on their drama skills in a drama workshop based upon the theme! The children's acting and use of body movements and expression blew the teachers socks off! What a fantastic first week back!

YEAR 1

YEAR 2 This term has certainly started with a splash! On Monday Year 2 completed their Explorer Training at the pool where they were put through their paces in a number of diving and swimming challenges! The children loved using their goggles and snorkels to complete the activities! What a brilliant way to kick start our ‘Underwater Explorer’ theme! After reading the first chapter of our new text ‘The Secret Explorers and the Lost Whales’ we designed our own ‘Secret Explorer’ badges! In maths we have learnt about position, direction and compass points. We used compasses to locate north in our classrooms and then wrote and followed directions on a map! We then loved looking at the world map

and located the South Pacific Ocean, the location the Secret Explorers have been given for their first mission! The children then created their own continents and oceans jigsaw map, labelling the seven continents and five oceans. In Art the children created snorkel self portraits using the technique of wax resist to create a wonderfully watery background! Yesterday we travelled the Sheffield to take part in the Young Voices Concert and all sung our hearts out! We had the most fantastic day and are so proud of all our children! Have a lovely weekend!

YEAR 2

It has been an adventurous start back to school for Year Three! We have been whisked off on an exciting adventure around the world in 80 days. When we arrived at school on Monday morning, we dived straight into looking at places around the world and finding rhyming words to go with them to write our very own poems int eh style of Pie Corbett’s A Chance in France. We carried out some research and use Google Earth to look at our earth and discovered some interesting facts; did you know that 70% of the earth’s surface is covered in water? This inspired us to crate our own planet earth using balloons and papier maché. We began our class text for the term and have been getting to know the main character Phileas Fogg and some of his character traits. On Thursday we set headed off for Sheffield

YEAR 3

Arena for Young Voices, we had a thoroughly wonderful time joining in the rehearsal and then performing in the evening. A fabulous concert for us all!

In Maths this week we have been recapping our knowledge of multiplication and working on inverse operations. Through a combination of games, physical resources, and written calculations, we are working on developing fluency with our times tables recall and the children have enjoyed applying their knowledge in various different ways, enabling to create depth of understanding. We are very much looking forward to seeing where our text takes us next.

The other thing which we always ask for is volunteers to help on the day. Any parents/family members who are willing and able to give an hour of their time to help man a stall or inflatable are very much appreciated. More to come on that later in the term!
