CoMPasS Registered Charity No: 1141329 I am writing the introduction having just returned from a day trip in London with the Year 3 children. We met at York station at 7.45am to take the train to the capital city. Our first stop was the Science Museum in South Kensington. As part of their themed text ‘Around the World in 80 Days’, the children looked at the modes of transport and how they evolved over time. The children then explored all other areas of the museum with their teachers. Many groups also looked at the first motor car in GB which was owned by Mrs Walker’s family in the years gone by. After lunch we travelled by underground to Leicester Square and then walked to the Prince Edward’s Theatre to watch Mary Poppins. The performance was absolutely sensational, and the children loved it. My highlight of the trip was the walk through South Kensington as we left the Science Museum when the children spontaneously broke into the most glorious medley of Mary Poppins songs having been

You can follow us Ball. It was the most magnificent evening and had been brilliantly organised by Olivia Houlston, Rebecca Lee-Bursnall, Morgan Appleby and Rachel Parkin with ‘on-the-day’ support from Victoria Woolf and Harriet Dryden, who both worked all day on the Saturday making flower arrangements. The Memorial Hall was transformed and decorated beautifully, the food prepared by Craig Robinson, Head of Catering and Stuart Norwood, Chef at 28 was delicious and the band who played a number of sets encouraged all guests to dance and have a thoroughly good evening. It was lovely to have in attendance Lisa and Chloe from the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund charity. Lisa spoke about the charity and the importance of its work to children in our local region and was appreciative of the support they have received from the St Peter’s school community. Thank you also to Mrs Bateson who worked the bar on the evening. On Monday in assembly we will be presenting a cheque for the money we have raised throughout the year through our St Peter’s 2-8 Friends and charity events.

taught these by Mrs Hayden in school. They all displayed so much joy and enthusiasm for singing, catching the attention of many passers-by in the area who clearly appreciated the singing as much as I did. Thank you to all the staff who accompanied the children, Mrs Clarke for organising the visit (and the weather) and to the amazing Year 3 children who were brilliant ambassadors for our school.
What a fabulous day! On Monday I had the pleasure to speak at the IAPS National Deputy Heads and Director of Studies Conference. It was good to talk and reference our school. The title of the talk was ‘What makes great teaching’ and was well received by delegates. Year 1 children have been on a river cruise in York. This was to support their theme Deep Discovery as the children have been looking into the impact of plastic pollution in blue spaces. Given it was recently World Ocean Day the children focused their attention on how they could protect their own local blue space which is the River Ouse, looking at how the River Ouse feeds into the North Sea and what it may take along with it. Year 3 had a visit from Mr Walker on Monday who provided an insight into what life is like living in Hong Kong and China. The children really enjoyed learning more about the culture and language. Thank you Mr Walker. Class lists went out to parents on Thursday. Each year it is important to mix up the classes to promote inclusivity in our community and enable all children to work collaboratively with their peers. The class lists more importantly have been created using the professional judgement of teachers based on a wide range of facts and our in-depth knowledge of how your children interact and learn in school. As you can imagine this is an extremely difficult and complicated process, with many moving parts and we do our very best to create classes that all children will continue to thrive in next year. Mrs Bateson was contacted by Project Linus, a voluntary organisation whose aim is to provide a sense of security and comfort to sick and traumatised babies, children and teenagers. They provide handmade quilts and blankets for children who can then use these to wrap themselves up in when they feel in need of a hug and have kindly agreed to donate a number of these to school for our Wellbeing House. What a wonderful organisation, we are extremely appreciative of this donation. My huge thanks to Anna Briggs from York for her support for the children in school. Last Saturday evening we had out inaugural St Peter’s 2-8 Summer Charity

Notice Board MUSICAL NOTES INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS IN SCHOOL This is a reminder of the different instruments we offer in each year group. Please note, drums are an option from Year 2 but priority will go to Year 3 children and a waiting list will be made for Year 2 if all the spaces are taken up. If your child is already learning an instrument in school and you would like them to continue, you do not need to do anything. If your child is currently in Year 1 and has been learning the recorder, please note their lesson will become a 30min lesson from September unless you wish to give notice. In Year 2 we usually recommend only having lessons on one musical instrument. In Year 3, we can discuss pupils having lessons on two instruments where appropriate. If you would like to give notice on music lessons, please do so by emailing a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk If you would like to sign your child up to learn a new instrument, please fill in the following form https:// stpetersyork.jotform.com/22117268 1611853. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs Hayden. Individual Music lessons are offered
for the following instruments: Year 1 - recorders, taught in pairs.
Year 2 and 3 lessons are all taught as individual lessons on the following instruments: Year 2 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello and guitar (possibility of signing up for drums)
Year 3 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, pocket cornet (smaller version of a cornet/trumpet,
once the child has grown enough they can transfer onto a full sized instrument easily) or pbone (lighter version of a trombone - students once grown enough can easily transfer onto a trombone from this instrument) and drums.
The fees for 2022/23 are: £24 per 30-minute lesson. Hire charge of £35 per term where appropriate. Please note we do not hire recorders, guitars or pianos.
Notice Board LOCAL ROAD CLOSURE Please note that Burton Stone Lane will be closed to traffic between the junctions of Crichton Avenue and Burton Green from Monday 20 June for approximately 6 weeks.
SCHOOL COUNCIL School Council lead the assembly on Monday morning to share some of the initiatives they have been working on in council, in particular their work with the Eco-club at St Peters 13-18. As well as the recycling bin for pens we now have a new battery recycling bin so batteries can be disposed of safely without harming the environment. Kate in 2J suggested a fundraising activity for Ukraine to grow sunflowers over the summer holidays. Packs of seeds are £1 from your council representatives and there will be a prize for the tallest sunflower in September. Measurements and photos can be brought to school in September. Remember at 2-8 the pupils voice is really valued so please talk to your councillors if you have any thoughts or ideas to share.
PUBLIC LECTURES Join us on Friday 24 June, 7pm, for a fascinating York Festival of Ideas talk, titled 'Army Girls'. Listen to the stories of former WWII ATS Corporal & Driver, Barbara Weatherill, and Dr Tessa Dunlop, as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of conscription for women. Read more here.
PE It has been yet another busy week in the build-up to Sports Day. The sun has been on our side and our budding athletes have been practicing extremely hard. The excitement is building around the school, and they cannot wait to show off their talents. Have a look at some of the hard work completed this week.

ACORNS
The sun has finally put his hat on and what a welcome return, it’s given us a boost of energy for a super busy week in Conkers. The creative area has been especially popular as we’ve been painting and printing our very own beautiful, symmetrical butterfly wings. We even tested them out, flying gracefully across the field to play in the shade of the big trees. It really has been perfect weather for butterflies! We have also been practicing a very important life skill this week - brushing our teeth! A HUGE thank you to Mrs Yeoman for coming in to talk to us about looking after our teeth. We chatted about why it is so important to brush our teeth, how to brush our teeth, what the dentist does when we visit, and, of course, the tooth fairy! We've had so much fun working hard to brush chocolate off some false teeth, very sticky and very tricky!

RECEPTION
YEAR 1
What an exciting week we have had in Year 1. We have started thinking about sustainability and how we can help save our oceans. We have been investigating different types of packaging to inspire us to design our own next week. We have also been mini chefs this week, in the areas of provision, and have been making fruit sushi. We followed the instructions to spread out the sushi rice, layer the fruit and finally roll it up! Lots of the children were brave enough to try wasabi and their reactions were priceless; some children enjoyed the taste more than
others. We have also been river explorers this week on the River Ouse and we loved our boat journeys in the sunshine with our friends. We are really looking forward to next week with lots of fun events taking place. Have a fabulous weekend everyone.
YEAR 1
YEAR 2 This week Year Two have become directors and authors! The children were very inspired by their trip to The Deep last week and have created their own underwater adventure animations. They planned and designed an ocean small world and crafted plasticine sea animals for their stories. They then worked collaboratively to film their stop motion animations using the app, I Can Animate. The children absolutely loved this and even narrated their short stories. In maths, we have been learning about money and the children have shown great enthusiasm when exploring The Deep gift shops in our classrooms, making totals, paying for items and even finding the correct
change. We have discovered that the children are all very savvy with this! Today 2H and 2J went to the STP art department for a clay workshop and made beautiful textured clay fish. 2P are looking forward to their turn on Monday and we can’t wait to see what they look like when they come out of the kiln. Next week we will be continuing our underwater adventure and will be investigating different types of ocean pollution. If you have an empty plastic bottle at home then please send it into school as the children will be making recycled art jellyfish! Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing lots of you on Thursday for Sports Day!
YEAR 2
YEAR 3 It has been a week to remember in Year Three! We kickstarted it on Monday with a visit from Mr Walker who spoke to us about Hong Kong. He told us about the culture, geography and even brought in some interesting artefacts for us to explore. On Tuesday we went to visit Ms Macdonald in the library at 8-13 and heard all about how it works. We were blown away by the amount of amazing books (over 10,000!) and were excited to hear that we’ll be able to use the library during breaks and before school next year, if we would like. Following this visit, we had some special VIPs join us
from J1 who answered lots of questions about life and school. It has got us feeling very excited and we can’t wait to visit again next week and meet our new teachers! The highlight for the week has to be our school trip to London! It was such fun getting on the train with our friends and we had a brilliant time exploring the Science Museum, watching Mary Poppins in the West End and of course, going to Pizza Express for dinner! A huge thank you to Mrs Clarke for organising such an amazing day, it was certainly one we will never forget!
