Year 2 visited York Mansion House on Wednesday this week as part of their ‘Ole York’ theme. During their learning journey this term they have been investigating the Georgians in York. They were given a tour of this most impressive building, and learned about this period in Yorks’ history. Huge thanks to the Lord and Lady Mayoress for their welcome and hospitality. As I am sure you will agree it has been another action-packed week at St Peter’s 2-8 and my thanks must go to all the staff for providing such incredible learning experiences for the children to enjoy. I must also thank Mrs Fattorini who has not only done her best to look after the office this week, she has also put this week’s newsletter together at very short notice. Mrs Fattorini has asked me to apologise in advance for her rusty desk top publishing skills and hopes you will forgive any errors! I hope you all have a relaxing weekend.

This morning we had a delightful assembly about Diwali led by Dr Jagannath, Arjun’s daddy, from Year 1 and Dr Airody, Ciara’s mummy, from Year 2. Dr Airody explained that Diwali is known as ‘the festival of lights’ and although it originated in India, it is now widely celebrated across the world. The children were captivated as Dr Airody told the story of Rama and Sita. Rama was married to a beautiful princess called Sita. They were banished to live in the forest with his brother Lakshman, by Rama’s stepmother who wanted her son to be king. Having formed a friendship with Hanuman, the monkey king Rama battled for 10 days before eventually rescuing Sita and returning home. The town was lit up with lights in celebration of the return of Rama and Sita and this became the celebration of Diwali. Celebrated over 5 days, the first three are Diwali, the fourth is a celebration of the New Year and the fifth and final day of
On Monday afternoon the children in Year 3 had their first music concert of the year. The children were once again brilliant, the choir sang beautifully with huge smiles on their faces throughout. The children who play musical instruments in school then had the opportunity to perform playing their individual pieces. Well done to all of the children who played a range of instruments, recorder, guitar, piano. Thank you to the parents who attended the event both in the Rayson Room and via our live streaming (PlaneteStream). The children loved seeing you there. Huge thanks to Mrs Hayden for organising the concert and to Mrs Clarke and our fabulous team of peripatetic teachers for their preparation and support of our children.

THURSDAY
In PSHE lessons this week the children have been writing kind words onto luggage labels to describe people. Today children will come home with a luggage label written by another child in school as an act of kindness. They are truly wonderful to read, and one of the labels I read which really stuck in my mind had the words ‘YOU ARE UNSTOPPABLE’. It’s incredibly heartwarming to know that children so young have the ability and initiative to inspire such positivity. My sincere thanks to Mrs Moore and Mrs Clarke for creating this fabulous activity.
On Friday 24th November is the collection day for Bags2school. I hope you found a bag in your child’s bookbag last Friday, if not please let the School Office know.

At school we created our own film with our suggestions of what our kind words would be. It is a beautiful film created by staff at school, we hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it. Anti Bullying Film - One Kind Word 2021
Tonight, is the first social of the year that has been organised by the Friends for parents. The Piggy Race Night is an evening of fun for all parents; however, the main focus is to catch up with friends as it has been so long since we have been able to meet in person. Thank you to the St Peter’s 2-8 Friends committee for organising this event.
celebration is Bhai Dooj, which is a celebration of love between siblings. Dr Jagannath showed the children how the lights which are placed in a row are made from clay, the wick from natural cotton, stretched and rolled in the palms of the hand and the fuel is oil. The candles remain lit for 5 days and signify welcoming goodness into the home and Rangoli patterns are created from coloured sand at the entrance of the home to welcome Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of good luck and wealth. I think we would all agree this is a very beautiful festival and the children really enjoyed learning all about it. My huge thanks to Dr Jagannath, and Dr Airody for joining us and sharing this fabulous tradition with us all.
TUESDAY
Today the children came to school wearing odd socks in recognition of Odd Socks Day as part of Anti-Bullying Week. This day helps us to recognise that everyone is unique and different, and that we all need kindness and respect. Kindness is more important today than it has ever been. The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us. This is one of the reasons, that ‘One Kind Word’ has been chosen as the theme of Anti-Bullying Week and you can watch a film here prepared by the AntiBullying Alliance. AntiBullying Week 2021: One Kind Word
the congregation at Evensong. It was such a lovely service and enjoyed by all. Next Thursday we have been invited to the Minster to help place candles in the advent wreath and watch as it is hoisted into position. As a school we feel very fortunate and privileged to have such strong links with the Minster.
MONDAY
This week we have celebrated ‘Anti-Bullying Week’. Held annually in the UK, the event aims to raise awareness of bullying, whilst highlighting ways of preventing and responding to it. In England, Anti-Bullying Week is organised by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and recognised by all schools in the country who are united against bullying.

MUSICAL NOTES
the concert we had on Monday already feels like a month ago! The Year 3s were finally able to perform to a live audience made up of their parents, we had a wide variety of soloists playing guitar, violin recorder, cello and piano! All the children were fabulous, they were able to show off their hard work and demonstrated resilience and kindness to their friends alongside their musical skills. Thank you to our audience of patient Year 3 parents who had to wait longer than we anticipated for this concert. The choir also had a second outing and once again performed really well and with ever increasing confidence.
On Wednesday some of our Year 3 children and their families
join us for Evensong at the Minster. It was a lovely service and an important opportunity for our Year 3 children to find out a little more about being a chorister. On Wednesday 24th November we will be welcoming Year 3 children and their parents to an information session at 4.30pm in the Rayson Room. This will be a great opportunity to find out about life as a chorister at 8-13. We will be joined by Mrs Craven, Director of Music 8-13, Mr Ben Morris, Assistant Musical Director, York Minster and Revd Vicky Johnson Canon Precentor, York Minster. If you are unable to make the meeting I will make the PowerPoint available next week. If your son or daughter wishes to apply to be a chorister, please complete this form.

SCHOOL COUNCIL This week School Council were visited by Mr Robinson, the General Manager – Catering and Hospitality at St Peter’s, to discuss mealtimes in 2-8. We were able to share our classes ideas on food we enjoyed and suggestions for new menus. Mr Robinson explained to the children about having to provide nutritionally balanced meals as well as trying to cater for different tastes and preferences. He liked some of our ideas like Toad in the Hole and pancakes. We also asked him about the use of ‘plastic’ items in the dining room and it turned out they are not plastic! Most of the disposable items that are used in St Peter’s are compostable, from a company called Vegware. All their products are made from plants, they are put in with the food waste, not the general waste bin, and then it gets taken away to be turned into renewable energy. Council were delighted to hear this as one o of the other items we are investigating is Climate Change and how we can help. Thank you Mr Robinson for coming to our meeting.
Year 2 have been working extremely hard on their gymnastic shapes the past two weeks! Miss Flockhart put the children to the test when checking to see if they could remember how to perform the following shapes; straddle, pike, tuck, arch and dish. The children blew Miss Flockhart and Miss Hopper away as they were able to demonstrate all the shapes without any prompting. They were
also able to recall where their hamstrings were located in their body and identify the appropriate stretches.

CONKERS
It’s been another jam packed week in Conkers. Our Diwali celebrations have continued, retelling the story and we have even made our very own diva lamps. We’ve enjoyed baking chocolate chip buns inside and mud pies outside! The best part of the week by far was our two visitors, colourful Colin and Doug the dog! Colin our multi coloured parrot friend, challenged us to find different coloured objects around Nursery before the timer finished whilst he flew around! Miss Cooks dog Doug joined us for a walk to forest school, we all agreed he is a kind and friendly dog who is now know as ‘our Nursery dog’!
It has been another action- packed week in Reception full of fun, creativity and adventure. Our new den building area has been very popular outside with a Cleopatra's pyramid, army base and jungle camp all being constructed throughout the week by our budding architects! Our love of maps and treasure hunts has found us designing giant maps inspired by storybooks, following positional language to find tasty clues and even searching for chocolate coin treasure in Forest School followed by a toasted marshmallow and hot chocolate treat! Our fascination with Space has led to space rocket role play and a new space themed construction zone which has proved very popular with the
children. RJ enjoyed an exciting trip out to the new Christmas Market and Christmas tree trail in York City Centre, taking beautiful photos of their favourite Christmas tree decorations on the IPads; RM and RC are really looking forward to visiting too in the upcoming weeks. The smell of delicious gingerbread being baked continues to fill the air in Reception with the oven never out of use and Cook School is as popular as ever! We are all turning into fabulous bakers - watch out the Great British Bake Off!!

Christmas play rehearsals are in full swing this week and we are loving singing our super Christmas songs, practicing performing and learning our lines. We can’t believe that this is the children’s first Christmas play, how special and magical it will be.

YEAR 1
YEAR 1
YEAR 2
Stand and Deliver! This week we have found ourselves in the era of the Gorgeous Georgians! We have learnt all about the famous Highway Man, Dick Turpin who was actually executed and buried here in York! Following this we then read ‘The HighwayRat’ by Julia Donaldson and acted out parts of the story at Forest School. The children thought carefully about how they could change their voices for each of the characters the Highway Rat encountered. We noticed that speech marks are used to show when a character is speaking and have enjoyed exploring how to use them in our writing. The children then wrote their own new verse for the story using rhyming and loved thinking up what delicious sweet treats the rat might steal next! On Wednesday the children were immersed in the grandeur and elegance of Georgian high society during our visit to York Mansion House. They were amazed at how grand the rooms were and particularly enjoyed seeing the dining table set for dinner with roast beef and a bird bird pie, wings and all! In Maths this week the children have continued working on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and have been using practical equipment to solve times table questions and word problems.
YEAR 2
Year Three kickstarted this week with their very first concert of the year! For a lot of the children, this was their first time on stage in front of an audience and we thought they all performed brilliantly. The choir sounded wonderful and all of the children playing instruments did a fantastic job – they were a joy to watch! Thank you to Mrs Hayden for organising. We have excitedly galloped through chapter 8 this week, looking at poetry, the disappearance of Edmund and have been teased with an introduction of a new character… Aslan, the mighty lion! Our writing and creative activities this week have reflected these elements of the story and the children have been busy using different media to create striking lion pictures, written cinquain poems, discovering all about the food chain of lions, created descriptive ‘Missing!’ posters for Edmund and carried out a
comprehension task based on what we’ve read. We’ve also been celebrating Antibullying week; discussing the importance being kind and understanding how our actions, good and bad, affect those around us. In Maths we have been focussing on developing our knowledge of times tables, focussing specifically on our 8’s! We have used a combination of physical, interactive and written resources to develop our understanding and for some, applied this to tricky extension challenges. Today we celebrated Children in Need day and it made us reflect on how lucky and grateful we are. We enjoyed an array of Pudsey Bear activities and were inspired by some of the challenges people have faced to raise money for charity.
