Anti Bullying Week is an annual UK event, held in the third week in November which aims to raise awareness of bullying of children and young people in schools and elsewhere, and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it. It started in 2002 and has since grown to become a significant event in the calendars of children, families, and schools with an estimated 80% of schools in the UK taking part reaching over 7.5 million children and young people. Each year the Anti Bullying Alliance, work with 100s of young people to develop a theme for the week that is tailored to specific issues. For example, in 2021 the theme was ‘One Kind Word’ and in 2020 ‘United Against Bullying’. They launch the theme each May to make sure people have plenty of time to get planning. Anti Bullying Week is coordinated by the Anti Bullying Alliance (ABA) in England and Wales.

The ABA create lots of resources and tools for schools across the country to use including lesson plans, films, assembly plans and cross curricular ideas all designed around the Anti Bullying Week annual theme that is developed with young people. In the assembly on Monday, we explored the question “What is bullying?”. This opened up a discussion about how we all should ‘Reach Out’ and call out any form of bullying and who we could reach out to.

The ABA definition of bullying is set out below, ‘Bullying is the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. It can happen face to face or online’.

This year we will be running a big Christmas giving campaign for our school charity Zarach. Zarach is a Leeds based charity that was started by deputy headteacher Bex Wilson in 2017. She started the charity after discovering that an 11 year old pupil in her class had no bed to sleep in and so was constantly tired, unhappy and unable to learn. She set about helping this family in crisis and was shocked to find that the three children were sleeping on bed bug infested old sofa cushions and had sores on their bodies. No charity in Leeds was offering beds so tackling bed poverty became her mission.

The charity's aim is 'Every Bed a Head' and to address bed poverty through supporting families and raising the profile of this issue. Bex has been featured on BBC Breakfast, This Morning Britain and Radio 1 and 2. As well as beds, bedding and pyjamas the charity runs holiday clubs and healthy meals in the holidays, emergency food aid and runs a Thrive pathway to help families out of poverty. Schools who see children every day can refer families to the charity

SCHOOL COUNCIL

Council have had a busy first few weeks back! We have continued with our recycling initiative in school and delivered new paper and card recycling bins to Nursery who did not have any! We also had some visitors - Mrs McCurrie who has replaced Mrs Hallgate in the school office and Miss Evans about the ideas we had collected from our classes regarding playground equipment. Miss Evans really appreciated our ideas and input with this. It was also lovely for the children to get to know Mrs McCurrie and for her to find out about our School Council and how it works.

Well done Council!

We wanted to mention that Schoolblazer will be running a flashsalethisweekend : 19th – 20th November 2022 There will be 20% off ALL instock items at Schoolblazer this weekend only.

Physical Education

This week’s PE spotlight is on Reception. Within the core PE lessons, Reception have learnt the fundamentals of rolling. We allowed them to practice this core skill through varying their rolling distances, allowing the children to explore how much force is needed to reach the target. They then applied this to a short game of bowling, attempting to knock over the skittles!

Our other lesson this week introduced various balances within gymnastics. There was a key focus on over and under movements where children explored space. It was fantastic to see such creativity when thinking of their own balances for their class to crawl under or jump over!

WELL DONE RECEPTION

ACORNS

Despite the weather being rather drizzly and wet this week, it has not dampened our adventurous Acorns spirits. We had a wonderful walk into town to see the statue of the late Queen Elizabeth. We wanted to see what all the commotion had been about the previous week, when King Charles and the Queen consort had come to York! We had a picnic among the beautiful autumn leaves and spotted some gargoyles whilst in the Minster Gardens. A great hit this week has been a tent in Nursery! The children have loved taking their teddies and babies into the tent along with ALL the food from the home corner. It has been wonderful to hear the imaginative play taking place inside the tent. This week has been anti-bullying week and so we have been chatting about being kind to each other and helping our friends. We have read the book called Don’t be a Bully, Billy and the children have responded well to the different characters. We are gearing up for the Christmas Performance and have been very busy practising our songs. As always we have splashed in the puddles, run about in the playground, and had a super week.

CONKERS

It may be wet and miserable outside, but that never stops us having fun in Conkers. Take a look at all the busy play we get up to in just one week!….

RECEPTION

Christmas has arrived in Reception this week with the start of our rehearsals for our Reception performance. The excitement will now continue as we head towards December! The children have been learning their songs with Mrs Hayden and practising learning signing the carols too. As the weather has become more Autumnal with rain and colder temperatures recently the children’s outside play has adapted to den making and colour mixing using rain water and powder paints. We have also been thinking about how the birds survive the winter time and learning what we can do to help so have been making bird feeders to help give them a little extra food. In our PHSE lessons we have been introducing the children to the Zones of Regulation and using colour to identify our feelings and emotions and learning how we can deal with them. We have been enjoying learning some peer massage to help with this.

Another busy week… next week some top secret Christmas treats in store!

YEAR 1

It has been a very busy week in Year One! The children have been busy at work as true rainforest inspired artists in preparation for our upcoming Art Gallery! The children have spent the week producing some beautiful watercolour pieces of their favourite rainforest animals. It has been amazing to see the progression in the children's water colour skills in such a short space of time! We hope you manage to visit the gallery next week!

After writing their own version of our key text, A Journey to the River Sea, last week, the children have spent time this week reflecting back on their writing to see how they can improve it by using our secret 5 star checklist. We have been blown away by the wonderful adjectives and descriptive language that the children have included independently. I think we may have some further authors in the making! Watch this space!

In maths this week, we have been learning about addition stories with the help our friends Super Sid! The children have been investigation the different ways to add numbers together to show how the calculations are equal to the amounts. It has been wonderful to see how motivated the children became as they worked systematically to show Super Sid all the different ways to make the same number.

And finally! But shhhhhh! Lots of time has been spent on a secret Christmas mission for our Christmas play. The children have been singing their hearts out to all the Christmas songs and have been learning all their lines tremendously well with great enthusiasm. We are all very proud of what they have achieved so far! But shhhhhh!

YEAR 2

The weather did not stop Year 2 this week as we had another special visitor waiting for us at the Forest... Treacle the Shetland Pony! This week, Year 2 have been learning all about the story of the Trojan Horse as part of our Greece Lightning theme. This story explains how Greek soldiers were able to take the city of Troy after a long ten year siege by hiding in a giant horse which they tricked the Trojans into believing was a gift to the gods and goddesses. The children have really enjoyed learning about this mythology and what better way to end the week than with a real life pony! A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Franey for letting us borrow Treacle for morning!

As part of this week’s focus, the children were set the difficult challenge of making their own Trojan horses using a range of equipment they had been given. Their design had to meet specific criteria including the ability to transport soldiers and the ability to move through rolling, pushing or pulling. This challenge required skills from our Collaborative Twins Learning Superheroes and involved lots of problem solving.

In English this week, the children have been retelling the story of the Trojan Horse in their own words with a focus on the use of time connectives to order events and correct punctuation. We have been continuing our measuring challenges in maths and this week we have been consolidating our understanding of using measuring equipment. The children were given the task of measuring and drawing a gate to the city of Troy which would be big enough to fit their Trojan Horse through. The wheels for our Year 2 Christmas performance have been set in motion with the children learning exciting songs and rehearsing their lines. We can’t wait to perform this on the big stage for you all very soon! Please could we use this as an opportunity to remind the children to rehearse their lines at home as we begin to gradually reduce the need for scripts

Well done Year 2! You have demonstrated so many qualities from our Learning Superheroes this week and worked incredibly hard

This week we have continued to focus on Greeper the Creeper alias Dr Reeper

We have been focussing on expanding our vocabulary and editing our writing using a thesaurus to help us find alternative words to enhance our descriptions. We have explored writing speech in speech bubbles and transferring this into our writing using speech marks.

In Maths we have enthusiastically moved on to using the formal method of subtraction; column subtraction. This has presented a challenge, especially when we started exchanging numbers. We will continue to develop this skill into next week before moving onto multiplication and division.
