On the way back from the IAPS Heads conference last week I took my emails off my smartphone. This was just one piece of advice from Dr Rangan Chatterjee who was there to talk about Heads Wellbeing. I’m so used to checking my email constantly that it made for an uncomfortable weekend knowing that I could only see my emails when I turned my laptop on! However, I persisted and now see the benefits of this in being present, focusing my attention on a task and giving a set time to emails.
This was just one of many wise insights for adults, but plenty of which can directly relate to our children too. If we can help our children to learn to be the architects of their health and wellbeing, we can enable them to not only survive the inevitable challenges of life but to thrive and become resilient adults. One suggestion that you might like to try with your child is to ask three questions each day. First, what am I deeply grateful for today? Second, what is the most important thing I want to do today? And lastly, what quality that I have do I want to show the world today? Simple but powerful prompts for a positive start to the day. He also spoke about the role of adults in modelling health and wellbeing for our children. If you haven’t heard his podcast, Feel Better, Live More, I can thoroughly recommend it.
I returned to school on Monday morning to find a beautiful vase of sunflowers on my desk that had been grown by the children in Nursery with a little help from Mrs Ferguson. Our Mini Dukes club had harvested them before helping to move the Nursery Garden area to a bigger space. A big thank you to Mrs Salisbury and Mrs Ferguson who introduced the Junior Dukes award scheme to our club programme this term. I know that the children taking part are thoroughly enjoying it, and we hope to extend this to include other year groups in the future. School Council is now in full swing and has been busy working alongside the House Captains to create and then implement a Playtime Action Plan.
They have had so many excellent suggestions and are looking forward to sharing the completed plan with the school in one of our Monday assemblies. The children gain so much from having their voices heard and being able to see their ideas becoming part of daily life at school.
We have also taken the Year 3 children’s suggestions for our school charity and again the children will hear about the charities in one of our Monday assemblies and then be able to decide on our charity for the coming year.
Yesterday was European Languages Day. This annual event helps us to celebrate the many languages that are spoken across Europe, and we extend this to celebrate world languages. This year we wanted to raise our own awareness of the languages spoken within our school community to enable us to celebrate our linguistic and cultural diversity. Thank you to those families who have already completed the questionnaire that was sent on Wednesday about the languages spoken within your home setting. These responses will help inform our celebration of languages at 2-8 assembly on Monday.
We ended the week this afternoon with the children taking part in
the whole school fundraising day. After much deliberation with the weather, the children took part in walks around the school as well as to Homestead Park. It was indeed an enjoyable and happy afternoon!
Wishing you a lovely weekend. Best wishes,
