Candler, Preacher The 8:45 a.m. service in the Cathedral gathers the largest and most diverse age groups of the parish. We rejoice and laugh with smaller children who are a large presence here; so the sermons, prayers, and hymns are intentionally developed to have a wide and educational appeal. This service maintains the grandeur and grace of the Anglican tradition, but our faith is presented in a creative and wide style. Should one be meeting the Episcopal Church from another tradition, this is our most accessible service.

The 11:15 a.m. Eucharist presents the splendor of the Christian faith in its most glorious Anglican fashion. Our music, our prayers, and our sermons use the finest sources our spiritual history can offer. Incense is used on feast days. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.” Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.”

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.” He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then I went and washed and received my sight.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him.” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” He said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped him.

Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.” Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.”

All are welcome to receive the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. You may receive at the altar or at floor-level stations. Stand or kneel and receive the bread (a wafer) in the palm of your hand. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request at the Peachtree (left) altar rail. Receive the wine either by drinking from the cup (guiding it to your lips) or by touching the wafer lightly to the wine. Younger children are invited to stand for easier access to the cup.

11:15 a.m.only: There is a priest available in St. Luke’s Chapel for prayers for healing. The chapel is located in the South (Andrews) transept. All are welcome.

Join us for our Sunday Lenten Series: Reimagining Charity and Service at 6 p.m. each Sunday evening during Lent in the Gould Room. Our adult series will explore the concepts of charity, service, and poverty; consider new paradigms relating to charity; and invite reflection on our own practices relating to these areas: what seems to be working, what doesn’t, and where do we go from here? The series will be led by Canon Cathy Zappa and others. This evening, Canon Cathy Zappa will lead a discussion on “‘My name is not these people’: Pursuing mutuality and participation.” Youth and EYSeedlings will have an ageappropriate program that mirrors what the adults are doing, so that family conversations can continue during the week. Childcare is provided. The program is free, but dinner is $6 for adults and $4 for children with a $25 maximum for families. Children 3 and under eat for free. So we can plan appropriately, please RSVP for dinner to lmcnamara@stphilipscathedral.org.

CHILDREN Children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate fully in our liturgy. For parents who prefer it, The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

During the 8:45 a.m. service, children 3 by September 1 through 3rd graders may choose to attend an age appropriate liturgy of the Word in one of our two Children’s Chapels. Children follow the acolytes and chapel leaders to Primary and Alleluia Chapels at the Sequence Hymn and rejoin their parents at the Offertory.

All Godly Play classes are mixed-age groupings. If you have not registered for Sunday School, your child will be placed in an appropriate class when you arrive on the Children’s wing this morning. Children’s Sunday School classes will meet immediately after the 8:45 a.m. service in the following locations: 2s (by September 1): Room 225 Primary Class (3s-Kindergarten): Rooms 304 and 306 Intermediate Classes (1-3rd grade): Rooms 308 and 311 Advanced Class (4th and 5th grade): Room 316

YOUTH Christians and Controversy—Room 382 Middle School Youth are invited to join Jacob Nastruz for a class that will look at some of the controversies we face as Christians and learn how we deal with those controversies in our daily lives. We will be going over some hard topics such as Science vs. Religion, What makes a “Good Christian”? and Who gets into Heaven? Just to name a few.

Harry Potter as a Sacred Text—Room 380 Christian themes can be seen every in Harry Potter. Join Maggie Paul as we look at a chapter from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone looking at themes that we can also see in the Bible. Adult Confirmation Class—Child Hall Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is a “mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism.” If you are new to the Episcopal Church or simply have a desire to find out more about the Church and this Cathedral parish, come learn with us this semester. This class is coordinated by Canon Wallace Marsh and taught in rotation by Dean Sam Candler and various Cathedral clergy, with occasional guest speakers. This morning, Dean Sam Candler will discuss Anglican Theology.

Beginning Biblical Greek Class—Room 356 The New Testament Greek class is offered on a drop-in basis at no cost. No previous language expertise is required; every class begins with the Greek alphabet and pronunciation practice.

Coffee and Pastoral Conversations—Room 120 Join Canon Wallace Marsh as he delves into a variety of pastoral topics. Canon Marsh’s presentations will involve scripture, theology, and of course, clips from popular movies. All are welcome. Today’s topic will be Faith in Society.

The Divine Dance—Room 239 We often find ourselves within the paradox of restlessness and contentment.“Trying to love others without a foundational reverence for yourself ends up as neediness, manipulation and unsustainable invitation, expressing itself in endless battles of codependency. Trying to love yourself and not to love others is what is meant by narcissism; this is most dangerous when it takes the form of religious narcissism, which uses even God for its own self-aggrandizement.” The Divine Dance is filled with words of freedom for consumption. This class is lead by Canon Carolynne Williams. It is not necessary to have read the book.

Imagining Jesus through the Centuries–Room 133 We are looking at images of Jesus that have been developed over time. This morning, Canon Cathy Zappa will lead a discussion titled, “Images of Mary.” As always, you will find those things that we think matter most: a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. Small Group Bible Study—Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. 1:15 p.m., Continuing Biblical Greek Class—Room 356 Anyone who would like to learn Greek is welcome to subscribe to this Sunday afternoon class taught by the Rev. Thee Smith. Translate from the original language of the scriptures. Enjoy discussions of the Greek of the New Testament texts, and how that can add nuance and depth of understanding to one’s reading of the New Testament. No tuition; only texts or media costs.

Taizé: Prayers for Peace is offered every third Monday of the month at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. The Indoor Labyrinth is available in Child Hall prior to the service.
