The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Allí, en el desierto, toda la comunidad israelita comenzó a murmurar contra Moisés y Aarón. Y les decían: —¡Ojalá el Señor nos hubiera hecho morir en Egipto! Allá nos sentábamos junto a las ollas de carne y comíamos hasta llenarnos, pero ustedes nos han traído al desierto para matarnos de hambre a todos.

Entonces el Señor le dijo a Moisés: —Voy a hacer que les llueva comida del cielo. La gente deberá salir cada día, y recogerá sólo lo necesario para ese día. Quiero ver quién obedece mis instrucciones y quién no. El sexto día, cuando preparen lo que van a llevar a casa, deberán recoger el doble de lo que recogen cada día.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.”

So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaining against the Lord. For what are we, that you complain against us?” And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening and your fill of bread in the morning, because the Lord has heard the complaining that you utter against him—what are we? Your complaining is not against us but against the Lord.”

Moisés y Aarón dijeron entonces a los israelitas: — Por la tarde sabrán ustedes que el Señor fue quien los sacó de Egipto, y por la mañana verán la gloria del Señor; pues ha oído que ustedes murmuraron contra él. Porque, ¿quiénes somos nosotros para que ustedes nos critiquen?

Y Moisés añadió: —Por la tarde el Señor les va a dar carne para comer, y por la mañana les va a dar pan en abundancia, pues ha oído que ustedes murmuraron contra él. Porque, ¿quiénes somos nosotros? Ustedes no han murmurado contra nosotros, sino contra el Señor.

Luego Moisés le dijo a Aarón: —Di a todos los israelitas que se acerquen a la presencia del Señor, pues él ha escuchado sus murmuraciones.

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.’” And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. The Lord spoke to Moses and said, “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

En el momento en que Aarón estaba hablando con los israelitas, todos ellos miraron hacia el desierto, y la gloria del Señor se apareció en una nube. Como los israelitas no sabían lo que era, al verlo se decían unos a otros: «¿Y esto qué es?» Y Moisés les dijo: —Éste es el pan que el Señor les da como alimento.

In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.”

For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.

Porque para mí, seguir viviendo es Cristo, y morir, una ganancia. Y si al seguir viviendo en este cuerpo, mi trabajo puede producir tanto fruto, entonces no sé qué escoger. Me es difícil decidirme por una de las dos cosas: por un lado, quisiera morir para ir a estar con Cristo, pues eso sería mucho mejor para mí; pero, por otro lado, a causa de ustedes es más necesario que siga viviendo. Y como estoy convencido de esto, sé que me quedaré todavía con ustedes, para ayudarlos a seguir adelante y a tener más gozo en su fe. Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well—since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Solamente esto: procuren que su manera de vivir esté de acuerdo con el evangelio de Cristo. Así, lo mismo si voy a verlos que si no voy, quiero recibir noticias de que ustedes siguen firmes y muy unidos, luchando todos juntos por la fe del evangelio, sin dejarse asustar en nada por sus enemigos. Esto es una clara señal de que ellos van a la destrucción, y al mismo tiempo es señal de la salvación de ustedes. Y esto procede de Dios. Pues por causa de Cristo, ustedes no sólo tienen el privilegio de creer en él, sino también de sufrir por él. Ustedes y yo estamos en la misma lucha. Ya vieron antes cómo luché, y ahora tienen noticias de cómo sigo luchando.

Se arregló con ellos para pagarles el salario de un día, y los mandó a trabajar a su viñedo. Volvió a salir como a las nueve de la mañana, y vio a otros que estaban en la plaza desocupados. Les dijo: “Vayan también ustedes a trabajar a mi viñedo, y les daré lo que sea justo.” Y ellos fueron. El dueño salió de nuevo a eso del mediodía, y otra vez a las tres de la tarde, e hizo lo mismo. Al cobrarlo, comenzaron a murmurar contra el dueño, diciendo: “Éstos, que llegaron al final, trabajaron solamente una hora, y usted les ha pagado igual que a nosotros, que hemos aguantado el trabajo y el calor de todo el día.” Pero el dueño contestó a uno de ellos: “Amigo, no te estoy haciendo ninguna injusticia. ¿Acaso no te arreglaste conmigo por el salario de un día? Pues toma tu paga y vete. Si yo quiero darle a éste que entró a trabajar al final lo mismo que te doy a ti, es porque tengo el derecho de hacer lo que quiera con mi dinero. ¿O es que te da envidia que yo sea bondadoso?” »De modo que los que ahora son los últimos, serán los primeros; y los que ahora son los primeros, serán los últimos.

Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Creemos en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso, Creador de cielo y tierra, de todo lo visible e invisible.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

Creemos en un solo Señor, Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, nacido del Padre antes de todos los siglos: Dios de Dios, Luz de Luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, no creado, de la misma naturaleza que el Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; que por nosotros y por nuestra salvación bajó del cielo: por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María, la Virgen, y se hizo hombre.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

The Communion

All are welcome to receive the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. You may receive at the altar or at floorlevel stations. Stand or kneel and receive the bread (a wafer) in the palm of your hand. Receive the wine either by drinking from the cup (guiding it to your lips) or by touching the wafer lightly to the wine. Younger children are invited to stand for easier access to the cup. If you desire to receive a blessing, cross your arms across your chest.

11:15 a.m. only: During the ministration of Holy Communion, prayers for healing and the laying on of hands are offered in St. Luke’s Chapel. The chapel is located in the South (Andrews) transept. All are welcome.

CHILDREN Children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate fully in our liturgy. For parents who prefer it, The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years (by September 1, 2017) through third grade begin in church with their parents, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children will rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two-years-old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

All Godly Play classes are mixed-age groupings. If you have not registered for Sunday School, your child will be placed in an appropriate class when you arrive on the Children’s wing this morning. Children’s Sunday School classes will meet immediately after the 8:45 a.m. service.

YOUTH Welcome to the Bible: We’ve got Fun and Games—Room 382 Join us for Middle School Sunday School! This year we will be asking questions like: Why should we bother with a book that’s 2000 years old? What does the Bible have to do with me? Is it okay to be uncomfortable with some Bible passages? We will explore these questions, and many others, by playing with clay, sinking model ships, competing in games, and much more!

Finding Ourselves in the Stories of Faith—Room 368 High school students are invited to wade through tough questions of faith, ethics, and identity, with some popular and not so popular biblical characters. What can Abraham and Hagar, Moses, Rahab, and Ruth teach us about living out our faith in the age of Instagram?

Beginning Biblical Greek Class—Room 356 The New Testament Greek class is offered on a drop-in basis at no cost. No previous language expertise is required; every class begins with the Greek alphabet and pronunciation practice.

Transitions: Navigating Life Changes with Confidence and Grace—Walthour Library Change can be difficult and even frightening, but periods of transformation and transition in life also present opportunities for growth and reflection. Canon Carolynne Williams will lead this six-week class geared toward anyone navigating life changes, regardless of age.

Old Fashioned Sunday School: The Christian Vision of C. S. Lewis–Child Hall We will be talking about on the choice we must make between good and evil, as set forth in Lewis’ descriptions of heaven and hell. The material presented draws primarily from The Great Divorce (1946),

by C. S. Lewis. The book is Lewis’ version of Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Small Group Bible Study—Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. Living Faith–Room 120 Join Canon Wallace Marsh and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another.

The Outdoor Labyrinth in front of the Lanier House is open daily.

The Thomas Ruben Jones Memorial Organ will be installed in Mikell Chapel in the coming weeks, thanks to a gracious gift from Cathedral member Lowell Jacks. It will be the first pipe organ in the Cathedral’s oldest worship space!
