The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany: Year B

The Reverend Canon Lauren R. Holder, Celebrant The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler, Preacher The 8:45 a.m. service in the Cathedral gathers the largest and most diverse age groups of the parish. We rejoice and laugh with smaller children who are a large presence here; so the sermons, prayers, and hymns are intentionally developed to have a wide and educational appeal. This service maintains the grandeur and grace of the Anglican tradition, but our faith is presented in a creative and wide style. Should one be meeting the Episcopal Church from another tradition, this is our most accessible service.

The 11:15 a.m. Eucharist presents the splendor of the Christian faith in its most glorious Anglican fashion. Our music, our prayers, and our sermons use the finest sources our spiritual history can offer. Incense is used on feast days. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel.

For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them.

Jesus left the synagogue at Capernaum, and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.

And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

All are welcome to receive the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. You may receive at the altar or at floor-level stations. Stand or kneel and receive the bread (a wafer) in the palm of your hand. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request at the Peachtree (left) altar rail. Receive the wine either by drinking from the cup (guiding it to your lips) or by touching the wafer lightly to the wine. Younger children are invited to stand for easier access to the cup. If you desire to receive a blessing, cross your arms across your chest.

Scout Sunday celebrates the founding of the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910. In 2018, the Cathedral’s Boy Scout Troop 74 is also celebrating its own 67th birthday. It is a tradition for the Scouts of Troop 74 to observe Scout Sunday by worshiping with their families and serving as ushers at the 8:45 a.m. service. All Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Scout leaders are invited to join this service in uniform, regardless of their troop or pack affiliation. CHILDREN Children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate fully in our liturgy. For parents who prefer it, The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years (by September 1, 2017) through third grade begin in church with their parents, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children will rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two-years-old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

All Godly Play classes are mixed-age groupings. If you have not registered for Sunday School, your child will be placed in an appropriate class when you arrive on the Children’s wing this morning. Children’s Sunday School classes will meet immediately after the 8:45 a.m. service.

YOUTH Welcome to the Bible: We’ve got Fun and Games—Room 382 Join us for Middle School Sunday School! This spring we will continue our journey through the Bible by asking questions like: Why should we bother with a book that’s 2000 years old? What does the Bible have to do with me? Is it okay to be uncomfortable with some Bible passages? Where do I see myself in this story? We will explore these questions, and many others, by modelling with clay, competing in exciting challenges, playing fun games, and much more!

Finding Ourselves in the Stories of Faith—Room 368 Who is Jesus? Why is he important? The question of Jesus’ identity is central to our own identity as Christians, our public faith, and our ethical orientation in the world. If Jesus was here today, what might he say about the task of pursuing faith and justice in our society? Though we can’t promise you we have all the answers, join the High School Sunday School community for some lively conversation, plus donuts!

Confirmation Class—Youth Wing Youth who are registered for Confirmation will be meeting in their small groups during the Sunday School hour throughout the Spring semester. Meet on the third floor Youth Wing.

Holy Scriptures in English & Greek—Room 239 This New Testament Greek class selects key verses from each Sunday’s scripture readings and provides user-friendly translation aids so that even first timers can enjoy fresh insights in Bible study.

Living Faith—Room 120 Join Canon Wallace Marsh and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another.

This week we’ll invite Canon Lauren Holder to introduce the book Present over Perfect, which we’ll be studying during Lent.

Old Fashioned Sunday School—Child Hall “Walking Through the Wardrobe: A Discussion about God, as described in The Chronicles of Narnia” Canon George Maxwell leads this class for four weeks from Sunday, January 14 to Sunday, February 4.

We will take a look at The Chronicles of Narnia. C.S. Lewis wrote the acclaimed children’s series to tell the Christian story without using explicit religious language. We will look at how Lewis depicts God acting in the world, and how we might find and respond to the voice of God that Lewis describes. As always, we’ll offer a warm welcome and great coffee. We look forward to seeing you there.

Small Group Bible Study—Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. OUTREACH February is Food Drive Month at the Cathedral as St. Anne’s Guild reaches out to you for donations of food and/or checks of $20 or more in support of Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM). Make checks payable to Cathedral of St. Philip with “BCM Food Drive” on memo line. The BCM Food Pantry provides 2,000 bags of groceries to more than 1,600 people each month, and is stocked entirely with donations from the community. According to the US Department of Agriculture, one out of five children live in households without access to adequate food. To help, please stop by our table in the Atrium Sundays in February between 9:45 and 11:15 a.m.
