The Cathedral Schola will lead the annual Festival of Nine Christmas Lessons and Carols by Candlelight on Sunday, December 20 at 4 p.m. This service consists of various scriptural readings of the season punctuated by anthems and congregational carols.

Our festival is modeled on the famous worship service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. Whether you best sense the Eternal through beautiful choral music or popular carols sung by all, this service holds something for everyone.

CHILDR EN A ND YOUTH SEE THE LIV ING NATIV IT Y THIS SUNDAY Join us for the Living Nativity from 9:30–11 a.m. this Sunday, December 20 in Child Hall. In addition to enjoying the presence of the animals, we will sing Christmas carols and have festive cookies. All are welcome. Regular Sunday School classes will not meet.

ALLEGRO: MUSIC FOR YOUNG CHILDREN Using play, movement, singing, and instruments, Allegro and Musikgarten classes help younger children through age 5 develop musical skills and knowledge as well as an appreciation for music, using the Musikgarten curriculum.

Classes start again in early January and are grouped by age, featuring varied times and age-appropriate curricula. All classes are taught by Brenda Pruitt, and are held in the Allegro room, downstairs next to the choir room. For more information and to register, go to stphilipscathedral.org/allegro.

EYSEEDINGS CHRISTMAS PARTY All fourth and fifth graders are invited to attend EYSeedlings, a monthly gathering of fellowship and fun. We will celebrate together Sunday, December 20 after Christmas Lessons and Carols.

Parents are also invited, and we ask you to bring a dish to share.

SIGN UP FOR CONFIRMATION CLASS All prospective youth confirmands (typically 8th graders) are invited to participate in the Rite of Enrollment on Sunday, January 3 during the 11:15 a.m. service, the opening confirmation retreat immediately following the Rite of Enrollment, and a group lunch and wrap up on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m.

The series of six classes—held in January and February—will be led in smaller groups this year. Visit stphilipscathedral.org/youth to choose which class you would like to attend: Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings, or Tuesday evenings. Each set of classes will be structured in a different way, so you will not be able to jump between time slots from week to week.

OUTR EACH HELP ST. VERONICA’S GUILD COLLECT TOILETRIES Holiday travel season has arrived! A simple way you can help our ministries is to bring home your unopened hotel and airline toiletries, such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, and donate them.

If you’re not traveling, you can help by buying and donating sample sizes of toiletries, or family size packages of diapers, feminine hygiene products, soap, lotion, or shampoo.

Drop off your donations at the Information Desk in the Atrium.

St. Veronica’s Guild will organize and deliver the donated items to Crossroads Community Ministries, Church of the Common Ground, Holy Comforter Friendship Center, and Emmaus House.

These are small packages, but they help the people served by these ministries in a big way, allowing people to retain their dignity by being clean and healthy.

COAT DRIVE SUPPORTS LOCAL GROUPS It’s time for the annual 20s30s coat drive! Each winter the 20s30s collect coats of all sizes and shapes, including men’s, women’s, and children’s. This year coats will be donated to two ministries served

by Cathedral Without Walls: Emmaus House and City of Refuge.

These coats help those in need make it through the winter with a warm feeling inside and out! Donation bins are located in the Atrium on Sundays through December 27.

CHRISTMAS EVE EUCHARIST WITH THE CHURCH OF THE COMMON GROUND As has been our tradition for several years, Cathedral parishioners will join Church of the Common Ground on Christmas Eve for a joyous celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Church of the Common

Ground is an Episcopal worshipping community on the streets of Atlanta, and it is a sacred experience to worship with them. The Christmas Eve service is at 1 p.m. in Woodruff Park downtown.

We are also looking musicians, who play an instrument that they can bring with them, to help lead the congregation in caroling. If you are interested in attending or helping with the music, please contact Canon Cathy Zappa at czappa@stphilipscathedral.org.

LETTER S TO A YOUNG EPISCOPALI A N Dear Anna, I’m sorry to hear about how anxious Marah feels. It hurts to know that she is worrying about what she would do if she needed to leave the country quickly.

I agree that all the anti-Muslim rhetoric is incompatible with the command to love our neighbor. I also think that it shows us why the command is so important to our faith.

Just think of the twenty-third Psalm.

“Yea, though I walk though the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me.”

Fear is not a bad thing necessarily. It can be helpful. It tells us what we really care about. If you tell me what you’re afraid of, I can usually tell you what you love. You’re afraid because you don’t want to lose what you love.

When we love the wrong things, they become our idols.

We think they give us power or worth.

They can’t. Yet, we cling to them, giving them our constant attention and distancing

ourselves from anyone who appears to threaten them.

In targeting Muslims, we appear to be worshipping the physical security of our bodies. Security is not a bad thing, of course. We wouldn’t live long if we weren’t safe.

It’s just not the ultimate thing. Once we pledge our allegiance to indiscriminate fear, we will never feel safe enough. We will eventually destroy the freedom that we’re trying to protect.

The truth is that we are incomplete by ourselves. We need others in order to be free. They give us a chance to know and to love. And, more importantly, they let us experience what it means to be known and loved.

Walking with God requires us to take the risk of trusting people we don’t know and going places we haven’t been. It doesn’t require recklessness, but it does require the embracing of uncertainty and a willingness to be exposed.

The absence of risk does not create life,

any more than the absence of disease generates health. As one writer puts it, we are more like a plant than a jewel.

The beauty of life is inseparable from its fragility.

When we worship the idol of physical security we can’t recognize the Muslim as our neighbor, and therefore we can never really be free.

Real freedom depends on relationships like your friendship with Marah.

I will keep her in my prayers.
