The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.

Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

From non-violent democratic pluralists to groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS (and everything inbetween), Islamic political activism has been a prominent part of Muslim social life over the last century. This talk will review the major features common to a range of global Islamic political movements, allowing audience members to better understand the complex contemporary landscape.

PITTSBURGH ORGANIST TO PERFORM This Sunday, January 31, at 3:15 p.m., we welcome organist Alan Lewis as our Sunday afternoon recitalist. A graduate of Oberlin and the University of California, Alan currently serves as Organist and Choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. ROOTS OF ANGLICANISM PILGRIMAGE You are invited on a pilgrimage to England to discover the “Roots of Anglicanism.” From June 3-15, we will visit England's great cathedrals and collegiate foundations, including Canterbury, Cambridge University (King's, St. John's, and Trinity Colleges), Durham, Fountains Abbey, Salisbury, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Winchester, and York Minster. Each visit will include an opportunity to join each institution's worshipping community for Choral Evensong or Eucharist, sung by its own resident choir.

Participating garden clubs are Boxwood, Cherokee, Designer’s Club, Habersham, Ivy, Laurel, Northwood, Paces, Peachtree, Piedmont, Rose, and Sandy Springs. Gardens To Love by Marcia Weber will transform the Cathedral Atrium with a stunning display. Flower guilds participating are All Saints’ Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and the Cathedral.

New this year, the Cathedral Antiques Show is offering a special ticket package for Friday, February 5. The Friday Bouquet offers entrance to the Antiques Show and admission to see two renowned speakers. Veranda magazine’s editor, Clint Smith, will discuss his book The Romance of Flowers at 10:30 a.m. and Belgian floral designer Gudrun Cottenier will demonstrate tablescape designs from her most recent book, Floral Party Table Decorations, at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are available on the website for only $55.

LETTER S TO A YOUNG EPISCOPALI A N Dear Anna, Yes, grace is a hard concept to grasp.

It is usually defined as God’s unmerited love for us, but talking about it this way poses as many questions as it answers.

Augustine, the fourth century bishop, famously found his faith in Paul’s letter to the Romans. In Romans 13:13-14, Paul admonishes his readers to shed their licentious lives, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh or the gratification of its desires. When Augustine read this passage, “his heart was filled with the light of confidence and all of the shadows of my doubt were swept away.”

A British monk named Pelagius took issue with Augustine. He thought we had to participate in our own salvation. God helps those who help themselves, he said.

Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, and, in the Council of Trent, the Roman Catholic Church have all

weighed in with their own theories of grace and works, which in turn led to various understandings of predestination, justification, and sanctification.

I find this debate interesting, but not terribly helpful.

When I think of grace, an interview with Dustin Hoffman about the movie Tootsie comes to mind. Hoffman agreed to play the part only if he could convince real people that he was actually a woman.

He put on his makeup and wardrobe and walked around the streets of New York City.

Hoffman did pass as a woman, but not a beautiful one. When he asked the makeup artists and wardrobe designers to make him beautiful, they laughed and said, “This is as good as it gets.”

At that moment, the film stopped being a comedy for Hoffman. He cried when he thought of all of the interesting women he

had never noticed because they didn’t meet his standards of beauty.

God’s grace is love, but it’s a love that usually comes to us as an unexpected gift. So often, we recognize it in the face of someone that we have overlooked or forgotten. We don’t even know it’s a gift until it’s fully received.

The good news, though, is we meet so many new and interesting people.

Women's Lenten Retreat

Listening for Longing: A Weekend of Retreat, Reflection, and Fellowship Friday–Sunday, March 11–13 St. Mary's Retreat Center, Sewanee, Tennessee Join women of the Cathedral for a weekend of fellowship, prayer, creativity, and time away. On this retreat we’ll visit Eve in the Garden of Eden to see what her story of original hunger has to teach us about our longings and our relationship with ourselves and God. Drawing upon the work of artist and Methodist minister Jan Richardson, we’ll explore the Garden and our longings and find sustenance for the path ahead. The retreat will be led by Jeannie Mahood with the Rev. Cathy Zappa, Canon for Prayer and Mission. In addition to being our Program Coordinator for Spirituality, Worship, and Pastoral Care, Jeannie is an artist and teacher with a background in art therapy and graphic design.

We will be gathering at St. Mary's Conference Center in Sewanee, which offers a sanctuary of natural beauty and quiet for rest, renewal, and reconnection.

Whether you are a beginner or long-time practitioner of centering prayer, or are simply curious about it, join us for a mini-retreat, led by Cathedral parishioner Will Traynor, on February 13, at the Lanier House.

The morning retreat will include an introduction to centering prayer, along with sessions of sitting and walking prayer.
