THE DEAN'S FORUM WELCOMES GUEST SPEAKER SHEFFIELD HALE “HISTORY, HERITAGE, AND MEMORY ” I am so pleased to welcome a special guest to the Dean’s Forum this Sunday!

He is my good friend, and fellow Episcopalian, Sheffield Hale, executive director of the Atlanta History Center. At the Dean’s Forum this Sunday, February 21, at 10:10 am in Child Hall, Sheffield will offer his presentation titled “History, Heritage, and Memory,” discussing the public display of Confederate and other historical memorials.

It’s a great presentation and I have seen a preview of it. It is superb in its own right. When I first heard his discussion, I realized that his arguments have relevance to particular discussions about the Bible. Why, for instance, do we keep certain parts of the Bible even when our interpretation of those parts has changed? Should we retain those parts?

Sheffield Hale will speak as executive director of our neighbor, the Atlanta History Center, but his views will help certain of our biblical discussions, too. I look forward to his remarks!

The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.

Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

This term in Old Fashioned Sunday School, we look at Rabbi Sacks’ argument in general, and his reading of the book of Genesis in particular, and use it to talk about the nature of fear, violence, and religion, and how we, as Christians, should be responding to the threats we face.

WOR SHIP LENTEN WEDNESDAY EUCHARIST This Lent, take a midweek break to worship in the quiet holiness of Mikell Chapel. Beginning at 5:45 p.m. each Wednesday, February 17– March 23, as well as Monday and Tuesday in Holy Week (March 21 and 22), join us as we celebrate the Eucharist. These services make a great precursor to the Lenten Series, 7 p.m. in Child Hall.

ENGLAND PILGRIMAGE INFORMATIONAL MEETING All are invited to attend an informational meeting on Sunday, February 21 at 5:30 p.m. (following 4 p.m. Evensong) in the Gould Room. The meeting will be about the "Roots of Anglicanism" pilgrimage being planned for this summer, June 3-15. Canons Dale Adelmann and Wallace Marsh will show slides and speak about the English cathedrals and collegiate foundations that will be included in the pilgrimage.

Each day of the pilgrimage will take us to one of England’s great cathedrals or collegiate foundations—Canterbury, Cambridge University (King's, St. John's, and Trinity Colleges), Durham, Fountains Abbey, Salisbury, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Winchester, and York Minster—and will include an opportunity to join in worship at each institution’s Choral Evensong or Eucharist, sung by its own resident choir.

February is food drive month at the Cathedral as St. Anne’s Guild reaches out to you for donations of food and/or checks of $20 or more in support of Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM). Make checks payable to Cathedral of St. Philip with “BCM Food Drive” on the memo line. The BCM food pantry provides 2000 bags of groceries to more than 1600 people each month, and is stocked entirely with donations from the community. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one out of five children live in households without access to adequate food. To help, please stop by our table in the Atrium Sundays in February between 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

LETTER S TO A YOUNG EPISCOPALI A N Dear Anna, You’re right. It’s easy for a Lenten discipline to turn into a self-improvement project. I can see why just giving up your after-school Coke doesn’t feel like it has much to do with God. Many years ago I settled into giving up sugar and alcohol every year. It made me ask myself questions, like why I thought I needed an oatmeal raison cookie in the middle of the afternoon to perk up, or a glass of wine at the end of the day to calm down.

Giving up some of my vices as a Lenten discipline made me pause and reflect, and I had the opportunity to look for God in those moments instead of filling them with the next easy fix.

Over time, though, the discipline became a routine and I was no longer reflecting on my habits.

Mostly, giving up cookies and wine made me feel better. I slept better, lost weight, and felt more energetic. It had

become all about me.

The Christian mystic, John Chrysostom, said, “No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others.

So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great.”

There’s nothing wrong with selfimprovement, of course, but when we’re paying attention to God, we realize that it’s not an end unto itself.

My Lenten discipline felt purposeful again once I found ways to use the energy that I gained from cutting out sugar and alcohol to do something for someone else.

I don’t know what your ultimate response to God might be this Lent, but I think you should look for it at the moment you would have reached for the Coke.

It might be that you set aside the money you would have spent on the Coke for a specific cause – or use the time to write a

letter to your dear old uncle!

Whatever it is, you’ll know that you are responding to God when you are, as Chrysostom says, “doing good to others.”

FARMERS MARKET REUSABLE BAG DESIGN CONTEST Country Financial and the Cathedral Farmers Market invite all Atlanta high school students to participate in the fourth annual farmers market reusable bag design contest.

Entries are due Friday, March 4, and the winning design will be revealed Saturday, April 16 at the market.

The student with the winning design will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The student’s design will also be displayed on thousands of reusable canvas bags distributed to shoppers this season at market. Two runners-up will each receive a $500 scholarship. Students’ designs should reflect this year’s theme: “Our Farms, Your Tables.”
