The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.

Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

L ABYR INTH A ND TAIZÉ Walk the labyrinth this Monday, March 21, from 6:30–8 p.m.

in Child Hall, and experience Jesus’ love and promise to us: “I give you eternal life, and you will never perish.” (John 10:28) Come reflect and pray on the labyrinth this most Holy Monday, by walking the way of the cross for life, love and peace through Jesus Christ. We will be surrounded by candlelight and recorded Celtic chants and prayers composed by Samuel Guarnaccia, with John Phillip Newell lyrics, and featuring vocals by Suzanne Butler with Elizabeth von Trapp.

Then, at 8 p.m., enter the holy space of Taizé prayer service for peace, in Mikell Chapel.

HOLY WEEK EUCHARIST Experience Holy Week with the Cathedral community. We’ll celebrate the Eucharist Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, at 5:45 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. Our regular weekday Eucharists will be held at 12:15 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel on Monday and Wednesday, and on Tuesday we will host a special diocesan service of renewal of ordination vows in the Cathedral.

A MEDITAITON ON THE PASSION OF CHRIST The Cathedral Schola will present its annual service, “A Meditation on the Passion of Christ, with Carols” on Palm Sunday, March 20, at 4 p.m. This service consists of various scriptural readings of the season—some chanted and some read—punctuated by anthems, antiphons, and congregational hymns. Canon Dale Adelmann will conduct works by John Jacob Niles, Richard Lloyd, Trond Kverno, Charles Snider, and Antonio Lotti. Start your Holy Week with this moving service of text and song.

CO-LISTENING “CO-LISTENING” AT THE CATHEDR AL AND BEYOND By the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith “Co-listening” is a simple but potentially powerful practice where two people take turns listening to each other. Its simplicity tempts us to minimize the benefits, however. So this spring, I’m resuming co-listening classes at the Cathedral. All interested persons are invited to attend one or more of the sample introductory classes offered from March 30 through April 20 and instructed by yours truly. These “Introduction to Co-Listening” classes will

teach and enhance peer coaching skills that make it possible to maximize one’s personal growth and interpersonal goals as fully as one chooses. Remarkable results can be achieved by people across all age groups and multiple backgrounds who learn to listen effectively.

I’m likely more familiar to you as a priest associate here at the Cathedral.

And if you’ve heard me preach you also recall references to my vocation as a religion professor at Emory University. However, my offering these classes proceeds from my many years of

teaching peer leadership in the international organization described at www.rc.org. In that regard other experienced leaders in our community will join me in teaching this 16-week course. But apart from the full multi-week series, your attending one of the introductory evenings offers you an

opportunity to explore a practice that can be life-defining and personally transforming into your foreseeable future.

Introductory classes for Wednesday evenings, March 30–April 20 from 6–8 p.m. are offered free of cost. Then will follow a final opportunity on Wednesday, April 27, from 6-8:30 p.m., to consider and possibly be invited to join the series that runs through July 27. LETTER S TO A YOUNG EPISCOPALI A N Dear Anna, Yes, I have been following the news about violence at presidential primary rallies and the fears that it’s going to get worse. I realize that it’s becoming even more real for you, as the campaigns move to North Carolina where you are.

The racial edge to the violence has made me think about Will Campbell.

Do you know that name?

Brother Will, as his friends called him, was a Baptist minister and social activist. He marched with Martin Luther King, rode with the Freedom Riders, and escorted the black students who integrated the Little Rock public schools. He also visited Klu Klux Klan members in jail.

His book about his life, Brother to a Dragonfly, should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand what it has been like to be a Southerner.

Once, Will led a group to a prison in Kentucky to visit an inmate. After driving for more than an hour, the group was denied access to the prison, because one

of them had not worn the proper shoes.

When Will suggested that they be allowed in anyway, a young guard began screaming at him. “One more word out of you, and none of you will be seeing anyone here today!”

They were finally admitted, but only after they went to a nearby town and bought a new pair of shoes.

When Campbell was telling the story later, he cried. “What are we going to do about him?” he asked. People listening to the story began to think about how to punish the guard. They talked about whether to write letters to the prison warden or go to the newspaper.

But, Will was not angry. He was worried about the guard.

He saw the guard as imprisoned by his own fear and anger and was wondering about how he could have dealt differently with the guard’s suffering.

In our baptismal covenant, we commit, with God’s help, to “respect the dignity of every human being.”

I don’t know what to do exactly about the violence that is taking over our politics.

It gives me a knot in my stomach.

I do know, though, that we’ll have to do better than simply dehumanizing those who have dehumanized us. We’ll have to resist the temptation to reduce them to what they have done wrong or what it is about them that scares us.

And then we’ll have to confront them directly, but in ways that acknowledge their humanity.

That’s the hard part about respect. It often feels weak at the very moment we want to feel strong.

Experience friends, food, and fellowship in small groups of 8 to 10 each month beginning with Super Foyers on Sunday, April 3 at 6 p.m. in Child Hall.
