PARISH RETREAT AND CHILL ON THE HILL

June 5, 2016

It was a fun Memorial Day Weekend for the Cathedral! Almost 200 members and friends retreated to Kanuga in Hendersonville, North Carolina for the weekend. We hiked, swam, played, and relaxed! Then, on Monday night, Yacht Rock Revue headlined the third annual Chill on the Hill concert in the Cathedral parking lot. Proceeds will benefit the Cathedral’s outreach efforts.

The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

Welcome to our summer Prayer Corner, where Cathedral members will share some of our favorite ways of praying.

We hope this corner offers a way to stay connected over the summer and explore different ways of thinking about and practicing prayer.

To this end, I’d like to begin by offering a practice that has been helpful for me: praying in community.

That is what we do every Sunday here at the Cathedral, of course! But I also pray with others in an Episcopal service at a prison, on quiet days and retreats, in Taizé, on facilitated labyrinth walks, and in Bible studies. In each of these settings, I have been transformed by the power and the intimacy of shared prayer. I have seen random strangers grow into a beloved community. Praying in community, especially with my incarcerated sisters, I have discovered time and again the Holy Spirit praying in me, and I am learning bit by bit to rest in God and in the loving care of others.

This summer, as many of us step out of our usual routines, consider stepping out also in prayer, by praying with different people, in different places, and with different practices. The Holy Spirit will not disappoint you!

Centering Prayer Morning Retreat Saturday, June 11 | 9:30–11:30 a.m. at the Lanier House In this summer series, open to all, some of the lights of our Cathedral community teach about saints, historical and contemporary, who have inspired them by the way they lived out the Beatitudes and their faith. This class meets at 10:10 a.m., Sundays in Child Hall. This Sunday, June 5, Canon Wallace Marsh will highlight John of the Cross.

Centering prayer is spiritual practice that stills the body, opens the heart, and helps center us in a heightened sense of God’s presence. Whether you are a beginner or long-time practitioner, or simply curious about it, we hope you will join us for this morning of prayer and rest. Led by Cathedral member Will Traynor, the retreat will include an introduction to centering prayer, along with sessions of sitting and walking prayer. There is no cost, but please RSVP to Cathy Zappa, czappa@ stphilipscathedral.org.

WEEK OF WONDER participants and volunteers are collecting new, unopened, travelsized personal care items for the St. Veronica's Guild drive. Items needed are bar soap, washcloths, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and feminine hygiene products will be donated to four local Episcopal ministries.

MUSIC ALLEGRO: MUSIC FOR YOUNG CHILDREN Using play, movement, singing, and instruments, Allegro and Musikgarten classes help younger children through age 5 develop musical skills and knowledge as well as an appreciation for music, using the Musikgarten curriculum.

Classes have begun, but it’s not too late to join! All classes are taught

CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. PATRICK A. SCOTT! The Cathedral's assistant organist-choirmaster was recently named one of Diapason Magazine’s “20 under 30” Dr. Patrick A. Scott, the Cathedral’s assistant organistchoirmaster, was recently named in the 2016 class of the Diapason’s 20 leaders under the age of 30. The Diapason, founded in 1909, is an international journal devoted to the organ, the harpsichord, the carillon, and church music. The top twenty came from a field that included over 130 nominations who were evaluated based on career advancement, technical skills, creativity and innovation, and awards and competition prizes. Dr. Scott will present recitals this summer in Charleston as part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and in Houston at the American Guild of Organists National Convention. His Houston recital is a result of winning the 2014 National Competition in Organ Improvisation at the American Guild of Organists National Convention.

BRING YOUR UTO BLUE BOXES THIS WEEK! Every day we have so many blessings that come our way. Let us rejoice and give thanks this spring by participating in our Cathedral’s United Thank Offering (UTO). UTO has been a tradition since 1889 and supports the missions and ministries of the Episcopal Church. Every cent collected fulfills diocesan grant requests, and each year over $2.5 million dollars is received through UTO offerings.

Pick up a Blue Box this Sunday and place it in a prominent place in your home like the kitchen counter or wherever you keep your keys and wallet. Ingathering day is Sunday, June 5. Having spent time adding daily offerings of thanks to your Blue Box, on June 4, you can open it and count your offerings. Write a check for your total amount, payable to the Cathedral of St. Philip (with UTO in the memo line), and bring it to church where you will receive a UTO envelope for the offering plate. Then, take your empty Blue Box and keep the tradition alive at home until the fall ingathering day!
