CHILDREN The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.

Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

ADULT EDUCATION Unless otherwise noted, these adult education classes are held Sunday mornings from 10:10–11 a.m. Classes are suspended this Sunday, October 2 so all may enjoy the pet blessing in the Cloister Garden.

THE DEAN’S FORUM (CHILD HALL) Join Sam Candler, the Dean of the Cathedral, as he presents contemporary issues of faith and life. This Sunday, Dean Candler will present part three of his series on prayer.

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL (ROOM 133) Led by Canons George Maxwell and Cathy Zappa, you will find a light heart and a broad welcome in Old Fashioned Sunday School. This year, we are talking about Jesus. In particular, we’re wrestling with his question, “Who do you say that I am?,” by considering historical images of Jesus and their implications for faith, then and now.

TURN MY MOURNING INTO DANCING (ROOM 120) As part of a series of pastoral care classes, Canon Wallace Marsh will lead a series on grief and suffering. How do we help ourselves and others turn mourning into dancing? This series will be based upon Henri Nouwen’s book of the same name.

BIBLICAL GREEK (ROOM 356) Beginning Biblical Greek is offered on a drop-in basis on Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m. for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries. SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY (ROOM 122) Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. CHILDR EN GODLY PLAY! All children age 2 (by September 1) through 5th grade are invited to Godly Play, our Sunday School curriculum.

JESUS AS A LEADER High School students are invited to join Maggie Paul in Room 368 for a class that will look at the different ways that Jesus exemplified leadership and how these examples pertain to their lives at school, at church, and as they go off to college.

BUILDING FAITH BRICK BY BRICK Middle and High School students are invited to come play and learn with youth ministry intern Jacob Nastruz in this fun and imaginative class where students are invited to explore some of the Bible’s awesome stories with...LEGOS! MAKING IT REAL AND RELEVANT Youth ministry intern Meg Jones will lead a series for Middle School youth using multimedia resources to bring the lectionary text to life in a new way.

MUSIC CLASSICAL GUITARIST TO PERFORM SUNDAY This Sunday, October 2, we welcome classical guitarist Sean Beavers as our 3:15 recitalist. He serves as associate dean for music and the performing arts and professor of music at Liberty University School of Music in Lynchburg, Virginia.

His program will include works by Villa-Lobos and Albeniz, among others.

Formerly warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, he now divides his time between Edinburgh, where he does most of his writing, and traveling and teaching internationally. In 2011 he received the first-ever Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington DC, in recognition of his work in spirituality and peacemaking. He has authored over 15 books, most recently The Rebirthing of God: Christianity's Struggle for New Beginnings.

CL ASSES A ND GROUPS GRIEF GROUP WITH MEG MOYE This fall, Meg Moye of the Cathedral Counseling Center will facilitate “The Journey of Grief ” on three Tuesdays, October 18, October 25, and November 1, from noon–1:30 p.m. in the Lanier House. This group is for those experiencing the death of a loved one and seeking a place to share their journey through grief and loss with others experiencing the feelings and challenges that follow. We offer a supportive, confidential space to explore the process of grief and share with others our journey toward physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. CATHEDR AL BOOK STOR E FALL BOOK DRIVE For the second year, the Cathedral Book Store will be collecting new books for the children at the Homeless Requiem, Our House Early Education Center, Crossroads, and now Arrendale Prison Children's Center, with a goal of 250 books! Donated books will be distributed to children at the Homeless Requiem and in December to the other groups. Books are available to purchase at the Book Store. Please help each of these wonderful children receive a brand new book this year!

CH APTER THE CHAPTER NEEDS YOUR HELP IN CHOOSING THE CATHEDR AL’S LEADERS The Chapter Nominating Committee is accepting your recommendations for the 2017 slate to be elected at the annual parish meeting.

The Chapter Nominating Committee is assembling the slate of Chapter nominees for the 2017 slate, and invites the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates by October 1.

As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues, sets goals, and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. The Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, as well as parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. Instead, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards.

Each Chapter member serves a three-year term, and Chapter by-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in

The Nominating Committee looks at candidates who will round out the experience of continuing Chapter members. An attempt is made to include representatives from all age and gender groups, while ensuring that a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral parish is represented.

Jane Baird Lecture THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, FROM 7–9 P.M. CHILD HALL The Cathedral Book Store is pleased to announce the tenth annual Jane Baird lecture with guest author Melissa Fay Greene. Greene is the author of six books including The Underdogs and has been twice nominated for the National Book Award. The lecture will be followed by a book signing by the author.
