HEADING SOUTH FOR MARDI GR AS High school students will be traveling to the Mobile area February 17–20 to celebrate Mardi Gras where it began. We will learn about Mardi Gras and explore Mobile Bay. As always, there will be laughter, fun, and prayers. The total cost for the weekend is $200; scholarships and payment plans are available.

ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASS IN THE DEAN’S FORUM Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is a “mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism.”

If you are new to the Episcopal Church or simply have a desire to find out more about the Church and this Cathedral parish, come learn with us this semester. This class is coordinated by Canon Wallace Marsh and taught in rotation by Dean Sam Candler and various Cathedral clergy, with occasional guest speakers.

The class, Sundays at 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall, will begin on Sunday, February 19 and run through April 23, with confirmation at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 30.

EYSEEDLINGS ON FEBRUARY 12 All fourth and fifth graders are invited to join us for games, activities, and conversations to learn about hunger in Atlanta, Sunday, February 12 from 4-6 p.m. We’ll prepare for the Hunger Walk, which takes place on March 5, and even design t-shirts for our Cathedral EYSeedlings team! As always, we’ll end the evening with dinner and prayers.

CHILDR EN The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.

Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

OUTR EACH HABITAT POTLUCK DINNER AND PROJECT Join the Cathedral’s Habitat for Humanity team for a potluck kickoff dinner on Sunday, February 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gould Room. If you can attend and/or if you can bring a dish, please sign up in the Atrium on Sunday mornings beginning February 5 or contact John Champion so we can get a headcount and plan for food preparation.

We will have a great meal followed by a short program to discuss our Habitat ministry and plans for the upcoming build. Our next home begins on Saturday, March 4 and runs through April 29.

If you have built before, come join again. If you have never built, come be part of this exciting ministry. No skills required, just your enthusiasm.

Our five-day Vacation Bible School will explore God’s restoration process for us: Building your life without God does not work, God can rebuild your foundation, Jesus rewires for new life, the Holy Spirit gives power to transform, and building your life with God provides a forever home with him! Get ready for kid’s lives to be totally transformed!

Week of Wonder is a volunteer-driven Christian Formation experience. We rely on parent and community volunteers to keep WOW running, safe, and fun. Adults, please prayerfully consider how you will be a part of the WOW experience this year and fill out a registration form to let us know that you will be here.

February 15: Tony Johns from Crossroads Community Ministries will talk about best practices for our individual encounters with homeless people.

March 8: Cathedral members Triff Cook and Susan Troutman will answer questions about driving. What happens to our driving skills as we age and why? How do we know when it’s time to stop driving? What are the alternatives to driving?

April 12: Cathedral member Susan Patterson and the Voices of Love Threshold Choir will sing to us and teach us about their very special ministry.

May 10: Dr. Eric Mininberg of the Piedmont Cancer Institute will offer insight on how to care for family members and friends struggling with cancer.

ELDER S A ARP SMART DRIVER COURSE AARP will again offer the Smart Driver Course at the Cathedral on Thursday, February 16. The course is a six-hour refresher aimed at motorists 50 years old and older. Some of the objectives of the class include understanding the effects of aging on driving; learning driving strategies that take into account the changes we experience as we age; and a number of other topics designed to make you a safer driver. At the completion of the class, you may be eligible to receive a discount on your automobile insurance policy.

Class begins at 9 a.m. and will be completed by 4 p.m. There will be an hour break for lunch. Feel free to bring a lunch.

The cost for AARP members is $15 and $20 for non-members.

You will pay at the door by cash or check. You must bring your AARP card to receive the discount.

2 017 C A T H E DR A L FLOWER FESTIVAL sponsored by dorsey alston, realtors This year’s Cathedral Antiques Show Flower Festival offers more than ever before. In addition to displays from eighteen garden clubs and flower guilds, the festival features a national book launch, an Iron Floral Design Competition, and a pop-up garden shop.

The floral designs by garden clubs and flower guilds will be on display throughout the 2017 Cathedral Antiques Show, but Friday, February 10, is the ideal day to experience the Flower Festival. That day, former White House floral designer Laura Dowling will give a presentation at 10:30 a.m. followed by a champagne toast and book signing to celebrate the national launch of her new book, Floral Diplomacy at the White House, which will be sold exclusively at the show before it is available elsewhere. Margot Shaw, founder and editor-in-chief of flower magazine, will give a presentation at 1:30 p.m., and at 2:30 p.m., Dowling and Shaw will judge an Iron Floral Design Competition in which three teams will compete against each other and the clock to create floral masterpieces. The Friday Flower Bouquet ticket includes all of the above, plus Friday general admission, for just $45.

Between presentations, a delicious lunch prepared by Flora & Flour will be for sale in the Gould Room. The pop-up garden shop featuring The Rose Gardener and Oakleaf Flower and Garden will be open throughout the show.

CATHEDRAL CHOIR ENGLAND PILGRIMAGE BENEFIT CONCERT Come support the Cathedral Choir on Friday, February 24, at 7:30 p.m. as they prepare to sing daily services as choir-in-residence at Salisbury Cathedral (July 24-30) and Durham Cathedral (July 31-August 6). The choir will present a sampling of the glorious music they will sing in England — including what is undoubtedly the first performance in the American Southeast of Herbert Howells' beautiful Sarum Service, written for Salisbury Cathedral. PIANIST BRIAN LOCKE TO PERFORM This Sunday, February 5, we welcome Atlanta native Brian Locke as our 3:15 p.m. recitalist. Brian has performed all over North America, and currently resides in Chicago. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the University of Michigan.

His program will include works by Antonio Soler, Beethoven, and Scriabin. (He is also a fine bass, and was once a member of the Cathedral Choir and Schola.) We encourage everyone to come and hear this marvelously talented pianist.

LENTEN QUIET DAY: THE FULLNESS OF JOY Join Atlanta-based Christian author Carl McColman for a Lenten Quiet Day on Saturday, March 4 on the works of Julian of Norwich.

Julian of Norwich, a 14th century Englishwoman, was a visionary and mystic who wrote beautifully about the love and compassion of God. Her writings are filled with shimmering imagery of the God who comes to us through nature, through grace, and most of all through love. This Quiet Day will be a time for reflecting on Julian’s wise teachings about prayer and contemplation as we seek to more fully respond to the God who is infinite Love.

McColman’s books include Befriending Silence, Answering the Contemplative Call, and Christian Mystics: 108 Seers, Saints and Sages.

RISE UP FOR THE SOUP-ER BOWL! Every year at the Cathedral, Super Bowl Sunday becomes SOUP-er Bowl Sunday, as our youth encourage us to bring cans and donations to benefit Buckhead Christian Ministry.

But this year, as you know, is different! Sure, we’re all used to the New England Patriots making it far in the playoffs, but our Atlanta Falcons are in the big game this year! So, we’ve challenged Trinity Church in Boston to a friendly donation competition: • On Sunday morning, February 5, our parishioners bring in canned goods and cash or check donations for Buckhead Christian Ministry; our youth will be manning the bins in the Narthex. Trinity parishioners will do the same for their local ministry.

• At the end of the day, we’ll tally up all the donations. Whoever brings the most, wins!

• And, of course, there’s a little wager: the losing parish will send a gift of local goodies — a batch of Flora & Flour’s perfect buttermilk biscuits, or local treat from Boston. Check out our Facebook page to find out who wins!

FEBRUARY 5 IS SCOUT SUNDAY Scout Sunday celebrates the founding of the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910. In 2017, the Cathedral’s Boy Scout Troop 74 is also celebrating its own 66th birthday. It is a tradition for the scouts of Troop 74 to observe Scout Sunday on February 5 by worshiping with their families and serving as ushers at the 8:45 a.m. service. All Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Scout leaders are invited to join this service in uniform, regardless of their troop or pack affiliation.
