THE CATHEDRAL CALLS THE REVEREND LAUREN HOLDER! It is my great honor to announce that I have called a new priest to serve as Canon of the Cathedral of St. Philip. With the advice and counsel

of a wonderful Advisory Committee, the Chapter, and the senior staff

of the Cathedral, I have asked the Reverend Lauren R. Holder to join

our community as Canon for Outreach and Congregational Life. I am thrilled that she has accepted the call of our parish.

Lauren Holder serves presently as the Associate Rector for Outreach with our good neighbors at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, in Atlanta.

Her ministry there has been distinguished by her excellent pastoral skills as she has coordinated nearly twenty outreach programs in the parish

and connected with mission and justice organizations around the city of Atlanta.

Before her ministry at St. Luke’s, Lauren Holder was Priest and Senior Program Officer for

Community Engagement at Trinity Church, Wall Street, in New York City. She had happily stayed in New York after her receiving her Masters of Divinity degree from the General Theological Seminary, in New York.

Lauren is originally from Texas; but after her family moved to Lexington, Virginia, she stayed there to attend Washington and Lee University, from which she graduated with a BA degree in politics,

and a concentration in environmental studies, in 2003. Her life and curiosity and ministry then took her to St. John’s College, Annapolis, Maryland, for a MA degree in liberal arts. Then, she travelled to Benin, West Africa to serve as a missionary for a year. From there, she served three more years

as Youth Minister at another great church, Christ Episcopal Church, in Charlotte, North Carolina; and it is from there that she went to seminary in order to become a priest.

I am thankful to look forward to a priest of Lauren’s caliber and experience joining our fine

staff here at the Cathedral. She knows, as I hope we all do, that each of the senior canons of the

Cathedral is really called to be an excellent generalist. As colleagues, we share together the pastoral and teaching and preaching responsibilities of this busy and wonderful parish. In a way, each of

us is a Canon for Koinonia, each of us a priest committed to God’s holy community here at the

Cathedral. I am excited to be welcoming Lauren to that community! She is joined by her husband, Jay, who works with the Atlanta Track Club; and they have a 2.5-year-old son, Charlie, and a

nearly one-year old daughter, Lucy Rae. Welcome them! The Reverend Lauren Holder begins her ministry here at the Cathedral on January 22, 2018. Thanks be to God!

Child Hall “Walking Through the Wardrobe: A Discussion About God, as Described in The Chronicles of Narnia” Canon George Maxwell leads this class, which for four weeks beginning on Sunday, January 14 and ending on Sunday, February 4 will take a look at “The Chronicles of Narnia.” C.S. Lewis wrote the acclaimed children’s series to tell the Christian story without using explicit religious language. We will look at how Lewis depicts God acting in the world, and how we might find and respond to the voice of God that Lewis describes. As always, we’ll offer a warm welcome and great coffee. We look forward to seeing you there.

BIBLICAL GREEK Room 356 Beginning Biblical Greek is offered on a drop-in basis most Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m., including this Sunday, for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries.

This week, Canon Wallace Marsh will lead our continuing discussion of Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit.

SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. This year, we are reading the book of Genesis.

Icons Of Grace: Shining the Light of God’s Love Through Our Stories

The retreat leader will be the Rev. Beth Knowlton, Rector of St. Mark’s in San Antonio (and former Canon for Liturgy and Worship here at the Cathedral!). MUSIC ALVIN BLOUNT TO PERFORM SUNDAY Atlanta organist Alvin Blount will perform once again on the Cathedral’s Sunday Afternoon Recital Series this Sunday, January 14. Currently director of music at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marietta, Blount is a graduate of Mercer University and the University of Tennessee. A multiple-time performer on the Cathedral’s recital series, Alvin’s recital will include works by Bach, Lang, Hailstork, and Richard Elliott. We encourage everyone to come and hear this marvelous local performer.

OUTREACH VOLUNTEER FOR THE ATLANTA POINT-IN-TIME HOMELESS COUNT Each year the Continuum of Care, a coalition of organizations working to end homelessness in Atlanta, spearheads a Point-InTime Homeless Count. This survey of people who are homeless is crucial for tracking the success of local programs to end homelessness and essential for planning future efforts.

This year, the Cathedral community will lend support to this important work and we need volunteers to work with a team leader and other volunteers on the night of Monday, January 22. Our job will be to survey the unsheltered homeless who are sleeping outdoors on sidewalks, in parks and encampments, and under bridges. We will collect demographic characteristics, homeless experiences and history, and other information that is vital for meeting federal requirements, attracting philanthropic investors, and tracking the success of local efforts to end homelessness in metro Atlanta. The data collected will also help the Continuum of Care in its planning for effective housing and service interventions to prevent and end homelessness in the area.

St. Veronica’s Guild will package your gifts of new, unopened hotel and regular size toiletries for four Atlanta ministries: Emmaus House, Church of the Common Ground, Holy Comforter Friendship Center, and Crossroads Community Ministries. Shampoo, deodorant, diapers, feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes, and toothpaste are especially needed, and all personal care items are greatly appreciated. We need help taking tickets, checking coats, relieving dealers for breaks, working in the garden club cafe, serving afternoon tea, and assisting in the dealer hospitality room. The Cathedral Antiques Show is delighted to welcome Holly Heider Chapple to the Flower Festival on Friday, January 26. Holly is an internationally known teacher of floral design and a beloved wedding and events floral designer in the Washington D.C. area. She is the founder of The Chapel Designers, a collective of international wedding and event designers. A small group of Chapel Designers will be joining Holly and our Cathedral Flower Guild in decorating the Cathedral for the show. Holly and her husband live on Hope Flowers Farm in Virginia, where they operate a bed and breakfast and teach classes. Holly is a big supporter of the “slow flower” movement and maintains a large Instagram following. She will be speaking on Friday, January 26, at 10:30 a.m. on events design and again at 1 p.m. on farm-to-table flowers. Tickets are $30 for each session or may be purchased online as a package for $50. Back by popular demand, our Iron Floral Competition between flower guilds, judged by Holly Chapple, will be held at 2:15 p.m. and is complimentary.

We are also pleased to welcome 12 garden clubs and seven church flower guilds to participate in the magical floral display of the Flower Festival. If you love flowers and the appreciate the beauty of our Cathedral, this is an event that you will adore!

Dear Anna, You made our Christmas!

None of us thought you would be able to make it home. It’s such a long way and travel is so expensive. When you first told us you were going to try, your mother could only say, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

In thinking about our conversations about faith, it strikes me that most of our religious practices assume the opposite is true. It’s more like, “When I believe I’ll see it.” Our vision of God helps us to see what is true about the world.

I remember when Ruth and I bought our first house.

There were things we wanted to do, like remodel the kitchen, paint the walls of several rooms, and refinish the hardwood floors. But, we didn’t have the money to do them all and decided to live in the house for a while before deciding which ones we cared about the most. We thought that our experience with the new house would allow us to make better decisions about how to change it to suit us.

I was saying my prayers at the kitchen table one morning when suddenly I realized that we had missed a step. We didn’t need to live “in” the house so that we would know how to change it; we needed to live “with” the house so that we would experience how it would change us.

I felt as though we had been called to learn more about the history of the house, and Mrs. Pew, who had lived in the house for more than thirty years. The house had a distinctive character, and you could feel that she had been attentive to it. The changes she had made, like adding the upstairs master bedroom suite, seemed like an organic extension of the rest of the house.

In the end, it made a meaningful difference.

We had plans to knock down the wall that separated the kitchen from the breakfast nook until we saw how the light coming in from the window there made the space so perfect for our morning coffee.

My point is that the house had its own story and when we listened to it, we discovered the gifts it held for us. When we ultimately made changes to the house, they fit the style of the home and had a timeless quality.

Life is like that too. It has its own story. But we have to stop, listen for God’s voice, and learn to discern what it is saying to us before we can determine how we should respond to it.

Cathedral PRESCHOOL Dear Cathedral Community, The Cathedral Preschool Search Committee continues the important work of identifying the Preschool's next director, and we wanted to share our progress to date and the next steps.

The community feedback provided to Carney Sandoe & Associates (CS&A) during their visit to campus in November as well as input collected through our online survey - have helped develop a position description, which outlines the qualities that we seek in our next director. This document articulates our vision, history and values as well as the characteristics and qualifications we believe our next director will need to guide the Preschool through the opportunities that lie ahead. This position document will be distributed to candidates and is posted to our website, cathedralpreschool.org.

Our Search Committee will work with CS&A throughout the next couple of months to identify prospects, screen candidates,

and then make a recommendation to the Dean and the Board of Directors.

Children's MUSIC MUSIKGARTEN ALLEGRO MUSIC CLASSES FOR CHILDREN THROUGH AGE 8 If you want a fun, structured activity for your child that is as educational as it is fun, Allegro is for you!

Movement and music activities are perfect for child development. Music immerses the child in language, evokes movement, stimulates the brain and fosters physical coordination – all in a group setting that builds community. Using Musikgarten’s newly revised curricula for infants through second graders, Brenda Pruitt teaches our Allegro classes, which offer children a joyful setting for mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social growth.

All class costs have been reduced to $100 for the first child, $60 for each additional child in the same curriculum, except for K-2 Allegro Choir ($75 for all).

LABYRINTH AND TAIZÉ Remember Martin Luther King, Jr. with a labyrinth walk and Taizé on Monday, January 15. A labyrinth introduction will take place in Child Hall at 6:30 p.m., followed by a facilitated walk 7-8 p.m. Then the Taizé prayer service honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. starts at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music, and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday. The labyrinth and Taizé take place the third Monday of each month at the Cathedral. Come to one, or both – and bring a friend! Newcomers are always welcome!
