Icons are vehicles through which we can see beyond or through an image to more deeply experience the holy. Our experiences can serve a similar purpose when reflected on together in community. Join the women of the Cathedral on the 2018 Lenten Retreat, March 2-4 at Kanuga in Hendersonville, North Carolina, as we use the stories of scripture, our own lives, poetry, images, a contemplative art offering, and silence to more deeply cull the graces God gifts us. Child Hall Walking Through the Wardrobe: A Discussion About God, as Described in The Chronicles of Narnia Canon George Maxwell leads this class, which is in the midst of its four-week look at The Chronicles of Narnia. C.S. Lewis wrote the acclaimed children’s series to tell the Christian story without using explicit religious language. We will look at how Lewis depicts God acting in the world, and how we might find and respond to the voice of God that Lewis describes. As always, we’ll offer a warm welcome and great coffee. BIBLICAL GREEK Room 356 Beginning Biblical Greek is offered on a drop-in basis most Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m., including this Sunday, for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries.

Pastoral CARE JOURNEY OF GRIEF: THE PATH FROM LENTEN MOURNING TO EASTER HOPE This workshop, led by Meg Moye from the Cathedral Counseling Center, is for those who have lost a loved one and are experiencing the feelings and challenges of grief. On Wednesdays, February 21, March 7, and March 21, from 11:30 a.m. –1 p.m., we will offer a supportive, confidential space to learn about the process of grieving and to share our individual experience and journey with others who are seeking physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. The cost of the workshop is $60 for all three sessions; contact Meg Moye, 404-483-3711, to register.

OUTREACH VOLUNTEER FOR THE ATLANTA POINT-IN-TIME HOMELESS COUNT Each year the Continuum of Care, a coalition of organizations working to end homelessness in Atlanta, spearheads a Point-InTime Homeless Count. This survey of people who are homeless is crucial for tracking the success of local programs to end homelessness and essential for planning future efforts.

This year, the Cathedral community will lend support to this important work and we need volunteers to work with a team leader and other volunteers on the night of Monday, January 22. Our job will be to survey the unsheltered homeless who are sleeping outdoors on sidewalks, in parks and encampments, and under bridges. We will collect demographic characteristics, homeless experiences and history, and other information that is vital for meeting federal requirements, attracting philanthropic investors, and tracking the success of local efforts to end homelessness in metro Atlanta. The data collected will also help the Continuum of Care in its planning for effective housing and service interventions to prevent and end homelessness in the area.

MUSIC WORLD-RENOWNED ORGANIST TO PERFORM Organist Gail Archer, known across the world for her imaginative and knowledgeable performances of the music of both well-known and fairly obscure composers, will perform once again on the Cathedral’s Sunday Afternoon Recital Series this Sunday, January 21. Currently the director of the music program at Barnard College, Columbia University in New York, and College Organist at Vassar College, Dr. Archer is a graduate of the University of Hartford and Manhattan School of Music. A multiple-time performer on the Cathedral’s recital series, her recital will consist of works by Russian composers including Alexander Glasunow, César Cui, Serge Slonimsky, and Modest Mussorgsky. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear one of the most respected performers anywhere.

A.G. RHODES HEALTH & REHAB Our 2018 beneficiary is A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab, a non-profit organization providing short-term and longterm care at three nursing homes in the Atlanta area.

As one of Atlanta's oldest non-profits, A.G. Rhodes has set the standard for serving an aging community since 1904. While utilizing research, technology and innovative approaches to improve care and quality of life, A.G. Rhodes has served more than 1,100 elders each year, many of whom are living with dementia and lack the resources to pay for their medical and living expenses.

As the Atlanta region, and the nation as a whole, experiences a rapid increase in the aging population, A.G. Rhodes continuously looks for ways to provide personcentered care in a homelike environment where elders are connected to and supported by their families and communities.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ANTIQUES SHOW Many volunteers are needed in three-hour periods on each day of the Antiques Show. We need help taking tickets, checking coats, relieving dealers for breaks, working in the garden club cafe, serving afternoon tea, and assisting in the dealer hospitality room. Children's MUSIC MUSIKGARTEN ALLEGRO MUSIC CLASSES FOR CHILDREN THROUGH AGE 8 If you want a fun, structured activity for your child that is as educational as it is fun, Allegro is for you! Movement and music activities are perfect for child development. Music immerses the child in language, evokes movement, stimulates the brain and fosters physical coordination – all in a group setting that builds community.

Using Musikgarten’s newly revised curricula for infants through second graders, Brenda Pruitt teaches our Allegro classes, which offer children a joyful setting for mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social growth.

All class costs have been reduced to $100 for the first child, $60 for each additional child in the same curriculum, except for K-2 Allegro Choir ($75 for all).

ELDER Ministries CLASS FOR DRIVERS 50+ AARP is once again offering its Smart Driver course at the Cathedral, Thursday, February 15. The course is a six-hour refresher aimed at motorists 50 years old and older. Some of the objectives of the class include understanding the effects of aging on driving; learning driving strategies that take into account the changes we experience as we age; and a number of other topics designed to make you a safer driver. At the completion of the class, you may be eligible to receive a discount on your automobile insurance policy.

Class begins at 9 a.m. and will be completed by 4 p.m. There will be an hour break for lunch. Feel free to bring a lunch.

The cost for AARP members is $15 and $20 for non-members. You will pay at the door by cash or check. You must bring your AARP card to receive the discount.

SPIRITUALITY LENTEN QUIET DAY: WANDERING IN THE WILDERNESS – WITHOUT GETTING LOST The first thing that Jesus did after his baptism was to follow the Spirit into the wilderness. He spent forty days there dueling with the devil over whether and how he would engage the institutional powers of his day. His choices would determine what he would do and who he would be.

We are called during the season of Lent to follow the Spirit into our own wilderness. It’s a time to think again about the choices that we are making in our lives. Are they drawing us closer to God or driving us farther away?

Canon George Maxwell will lead us in several contemplative practices that are designed to guide us in this discernment.

The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, February 17. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. A DAY WITH CYNTHIA BOURGEAULT PRESENTED BY THE CATHEDRAL AND CONTEMPLATIVE OUTREACH ATLANTA Modern day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and internationally known retreat leader, Cynthia Bourgeault divides her time between solitude at her seaside hermitage in Maine, and a demanding schedule traveling globally to teach and spread the recovery of the Christian contemplative and wisdom path.

On Saturday, March 17, Cynthia will explore the themes of her book, The Heart of Centering Prayer at the Cathedral This day-long conference will include lectures, discussion and question and answer, and of course, time for centering prayer itself.

Cynthia has been a long-time advocate of the meditative practice of centering prayer and has worked closely with fellow teachers and colleagues including Thomas Keating, Bruno Barnhart, and Richard Rohr. Cynthia has actively participated in numerous inter-spiritual dialogues and events with luminaries and leaders such as A.H. Almaas, Kabir Helminski, Swami Atmarupananda, and Rami Shapiro.

Cynthia is a member of the GPIW (Global Peace Initiative for Women) Contemplative Council and recipient of the 2014 Contemplative Voices Award from Shalem Institute.
