On August 21, we’ll host a Godly Play Open House for parents and children, as well as a Youth Information Session for parents and youth.

TRADITIONS WORTH COMING HOME FOR By the Rev. Canon Lauren Holder, Canon for Community and Education

These faux chrysanthemums are adorned with glitter, tinsel, trinkets, and braided ribbon that nearly touches the ground. Homecoming mums are heavy, weighing down whatever garment you pin them to. A few years ago, I visited my youngest Texas cousin who was still in high school. I noted that homecoming mums had grown in both size and weight (because bigger is always better in Texas) so that girls now wear them hanging around their necks rather than pinning them to their clothing. This struck me as simultaneously practical and ridiculous. When I was growing up, these mums were meant to be a sign of school pride. They were a way of marking yourself as part of a community and celebrating that sense of belonging. Long after the homecoming game and homecoming dance were over, the mum would remain pinned to a bulletin board as a sacred reminder of friendship and fun. This Sunday we will celebrate Homecoming at the Cathedral of St. Philip. And while I don’t anticipate any Cathedral themed mums (I’m looking at you, Flower Guild!), I do look forward to the sense of celebration, community, belonging, and maybe even a little church pride.

On August 28, we’ll celebrate with a Parish BBQ for all ages and stages!

The Cathedral of St. Philip is ready to welcome you home with arms open wide, whether you have been here one year or a lifetime. Thank you for making this place your spiritual home.

When I think about Homecoming, the first thing that comes to mind is my beloved red, white, and blue homecoming mum. I’m not talking about the colorful mums we tend to put in our front porch pots in the fall—those are lovely. I’m talking about the super gaudy homecoming mums of Texas lore.

The CATHEDRAL TIMES The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · August 14, 2022

On August 14, Homecoming Sunday, we’ll host the Ministry Fair between services. Come explore all the small groups that make this big community feel like home.

So many new people have joined our church community this past year, and I hear in their voices an eagerness to connect with Bible studies, volunteer opportunities, and social guilds. So many longtimers are rolling up their sleeves after some summer rest, ready to reconnect in old ways and new. There is a certain energy in the halls, a beautiful full sound in the nave, and a refreshed feeling in our classrooms. (Lisa and Keith can’t wait to show off their new spaces!) This Homecoming feels especially significant, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Note: Beginning with this week's issue, we move back to our pre-pandemic practice of listing only the choral repertoire in the Times music list.

MUSIC HELP SUPPORT CATHEDRAL SCHOLARS

Timothy Gunter is performing all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in a series of eight recitals which began in 2019. The next recital of the series will be Saturday, August 13, from 4–5:30 p.m. The piano sonatas of Beethoven have been regarded for more than a century as one of the hallmarks of the piano repertoire. The old saying among pianists for generations has been that if you can play all of the Beethoven piano sonatas, you should be able to play anything.

STEWARDSHIPSPIRITUALITY

THIRD MONDAY LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ

Program: Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2 “Tempest” Sonata No. 24 in F-sharp Major, Op. 78 Sonata No. 29 in B-flat Major, Op. 106 “Hammerklavier”

It’s back to church and back to school time for many in the parish, including 11 Cathedral Scholars. Thanks to the generosity of many parishioners, 11 young women and men, who otherwise would not be able to attend college, will be attending with the help of a scholarship from the Cathedral. The Endowment enables us to offer holistic support to these deserving scholars, with opportunities to meet not only their financial needs, but their vocational, communal, and spiritual needs as well. While the current need has been met, your contribution to the Cathedral Scholars Endowment can be matched dollar for dollar and will ensure support for this program for years to come. To learn more and contribute, visit the website at cathedralATL.org/scholarship.

Get your week off to a peaceful start with a Labyrinth Walk and Taizé this Monday, August 15. A labyrinth introduction will take place in Child Hall at 6:30, followed by a facilitated walk from 7-8 p.m. Then the Taizé prayer service starts at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music, and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday. The Labyrinth and Taizé take place every 3rd Monday at the Cathedral. Come to one, or both – and bring a friend!

WALK WITH US!

VOLUNTEER FOR THE HOMELESS REQUIEM! We are delighted to return to the Cathedral for the 34th Annual Homeless Requiem on Tuesday, November 1. We are seeking volunteers to serve as bus hosts, table hosts, pick up donated breads and desserts, and other miscellaneous roles. We are also seeking members of the Cathedral to be on this year's Homeless Requiem Committee. For those interested in serving this important ministry, please contact the Rev. Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralatl.org, or Sara Craig-Goodell, scraiggoodell@cathedralATL.org.

It’s hot on the streets of Atlanta this summer. Help keep our unhoused neighbors hydrated by making a contribution to our partner ministry Crossroads this Homecoming Sunday, August 14. Bring a package of bottled water and drop it off in the atrium between services or in Child Hall during the Ministry Fair. Crossroads helps more than 6,000 individuals in our community each year begin the transition from homelessness to a safer, more stable, future. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please contact the Rev. Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org.

We are seeking volunteers to help greet, pass out snacks, and have fun with Latino students and families from Garden Hills Elementary School on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at the Cathedral this fall. Time commitment can be anything from two hours per month to two hours per week. No special skills required, but if you love to organize games, plan parties, lead singing, read aloud, or do arts and crafts, we especially covet your help. For more information, please contact Lisa McNamara, lmcnamara@cathedralATL.org, or the Rev. Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org.

It is one thing to practice social justice work in your own life. But what happens when you're responsible for raising up another life? Is there justice work to consider in that endeavor? Turns out, the answer is yes. Learn more during the Cathedral Book Store's FREE presentation titled 'Parenting for a Better World' on Saturday, August 27 from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. Ellen Ott Marshall, Don Saliers, Carlton Mackey, , and Anton Flores-Maisonet will each give a 30-minute presentation. A book signing of Parenting for a Better World will follow. Registration for the event and copies of the book can be found at cathedralbookstore.org.
