CATHEDRAL GIVING BY DESIGN: COME MEET OUR BENEFICIARY!

Cathedral Giving By Design is thrilled to partner with WRCDV to support their vision of a community center for families impacted by domestic violence. The establishment of this center will allow WRCDV to expand their violence-prevention work with children, resulting in fewer children carrying the burden of domestic violence with them for the rest of their lives.

Each day, WRCDV helps survivors of domestic violence in Atlanta improve their safety by finding a safe place to stay, exercising their legal rights, exploring options and creating accountability for those who use violence. They greet survivors with compassion – no judgment, no second-guessing, and no shame. They provide connectionthrough relationships built with staff, support groups and bonds forged with fellow safe house guests. By linking women and other survivors with community supports and offering services, WRCDV make sure no one has to take this walk alone. Equally importantly, WRCDV provides a voice for survivors when they cannot speak for themselves and a platform for those who can speak to be heard. Their advocacy for survivors of domestic violence works to change the culture that allows abuse to thrive. That advocacy, coupled with their powerful work with children, facilitates prevention and ending domestic violence altogether.

One in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence trauma each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to the violence. WRCDV works directly with those children in the Atlanta area to ensure they receive the help they need to recover from trauma and learn new skills to build resiliency and form healthy relationships. By investing in this work, you are making our communities and families safer now and in the Formerlyfuture.the Cathedral Antiques Show, Cathedral Giving By Design is a two day event celebrating the joy of Home and Hospitality. Continuing a long tradition of philanthropic giving to the Atlanta Community, we invite you to join us for a festive “Welcome Home” party and auction, tour Atlanta’s most fabulous homes and gardens and learn from fresh and engaging local designers, on January 20 and 21, 2023. SUNDAY EVENING EYC: 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., Room 382

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children four years-old through fifth grade begin in church with their parents, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two- and three-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Worshiping together is central to our common life here. Please join us with the confidence that children and their natural exuberance are not only allowed, but welcomed!

GODLY PLAY Godly Play is our curriculum for children ages 3 – 5th grade. Children are broken into groups based on age and meet at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Godly Play uses multi-sensory methods of sight, sound, and touch to introduce children to the inner workings of Christian language. We gather in circles to hear the sacred stories from the Bible, as well as stories explaining our liturgies and life in church. We share a feast each week at the end of our session, so please indicate in your registration any allergies your little saint may have. Register for Godly Play at cathedralATL.org/children.

FALL YOUTH ACTIVITIES RESUME

Sundays, 1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom

This newcomer-friendly class is open to beginners, while including long-term members who enjoy exchanging tips, best learning practices, and coaching points on how to translate the Greek New Testament. The goal is enhanced Bible study, not language mastery. Cost-free, online resources are provided, in addition to traditional grammar aids, lexicons and commentaries, that yield immense satisfaction in discovering how the Greek text reveals nuance and depth in scripture.

Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Classes typically begin with reciting the alphabet, pronunciation practice, and accessible grammar instruction prior to a half-hour or so of collaborative, rewarding translation. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information, or visit the Greek class page for resources.

BIBLE STUDY AND ENJOY BIBLICAL GREEK BEGIN THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

Old Fashioned Sunday School meets every Sunday at 10:10 a.m. to discuss topics of general interest to the Cathedral community. All are welcome. You will find a light heart, warm welcome, and good coffee! This year the class will focus on the purpose of church or, if you will, why we do what we do when we come to church.  The title of the first series is “The Point of the Liturgy (or Why You Don’t Need to Check Your Mind at the Door When You Come to Church).”  This series will talk about the powerful role that cultural liturgies, both sacred and secular, play in shaping how we see the world and live our lives.  The second series will prepare for Bishop Beckwith’s visit in February by talking about his book Seeing the Unseen: Beyond Prejudices, Paradigms and Party Lines.  The Lenten series will look at funerals and how hope helps us make sense of suffering. Finally, the Easter series will focus on the psychological dimensions of faith and how they might help us to live into the idea of resurrection now. It’s going to be fun and will help you use your faith to find meaning in your daily life. This class meets in Child Hall, and recordings are posted online each Monday following the class. For more information, contact Canon George Maxwell at gmaxwell@cathedralATL.org.

FLOWER Guild

Get involved with a fun group of men and women of all ages while providing a beautiful service to the Cathedral. Whether you love flowers or don’t know a thing about them, there’s a place for you on the Cathedral Flower Guild!

A Beginner’s Workshop will be held Saturday, November 12. (Spaces are limited!) Email one of our co-chairs to learn more about the Flower Guild and how you can become involved: Grace Foster gfoster418@ gmail.com, or Pam Walz, pwalz@mindspring.com.

The Cathedral Flower Guild arranges all flowers for Sunday altars, weddings, funerals, special services, and receptions. But there is so much more than arranging that goes on behind the scenes and no experience is needed to get started. We have a variety of tasks that we need help with throughout the week with flexible scheduling, and many opportunities to meet and engage with other members. And if you would like to learn to arrange flowers, we will teach you, step by step, about cut flower and greenery varieties and uses, the best way to obtain and prepare them, and how to design and arrange like a pro! We also harvest material from the Cathedral grounds and our own members’ gardens; perfect for those with an interest in plants. We enjoy social and fellowship events too.

The Cathedral is hosting a dinner on September 18 at 5:30 p.m. as part of Equitable Dinners Atlanta. On September 18, 2022, Out of Hand Theater, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Fulton County Remembrance Coalition and many other community partners will host 5000 people at 500 tables - breakfasts, lunches and dinners, across Atlanta. Launched by a short one person play, each unique table will share a meal, stories, connect with strangers and neighbors, and be inspired to make a positive difference. A trained facilitator at every table will help participants engage in dialogue with depth, honesty, and mutual respect. The goal of the event is to mark the 116th anniversary of the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre as a community; and to use this commemoration to foster meaningful connections with each other and have vital conversations on how Atlanta’s history connects to systemic issues today – and inspire positive action for moving forward together. Register at cathedralATL.org/EquitableDinners.
