The Feast of St. Francis Blessing of the Animals

Bring your animals to church for the Feast of St. Francis!

This Sunday we remember St. Francis by blessing animals — they are all part of God’s creation. We are blessing creation itself, and the animals represent that!

8:45 a.m.

Animals join us for Festival Eucharist in the Cathedral.

10:10 a.m.

Clergy bless animals in the Cloister Garden.

If your animal does not travel well or get along with others, bring a photograph or a stuffed animal to be blessed instead.

Thank you, Vergers!

THIS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2 12:30 p.m., Child Hall

Join us for a reception after the 11:15 service to celebrate the ministries of senior vergers Richard Perry and Karl Sachsenmaier, who are retiring after many years of faithful ministry at the Cathedral.

During the 11:15 a.m. service, we also will dedicate the Verger Stall, given in honor of Richard Perry’s 50+ years of serving as Chief Verger.

CATHEDRAL Chapter

WE ARE ACCEPTING CANDIDATES FOR NOMINATION TO THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER

The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2023 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates.

As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-today activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards.

Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture.

Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities.

After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December.

The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community.

Members of the committee include: Kathryn Howell, Will Klein, Andi O’Bryan, Hubert Tate, and Sam Wilmoth. The Dean and Senior Warden Ward Bondurant serve ex-officio.

Names of recommendations should be submitted along with a brief supporting statement to any Nominating Committee member or to the Office of the Dean, 404-365-1031, or jmahood@cathedralATL.org by October 23.

OUTREACH

HELP SUPPORT STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AT GARDEN HILLS ELEMENTARY!

The Cathedral is partnering with our neighbors at Garden Hills Elementary School to make sure students and teachers have a great year. Several dozen Garden Hills students come twice weekly for tutoring, fellowship, and fun at the Cathedral through our LaAmistad ministry. Now, we have the opportunity to reach even more children—and their teachers—by donating much needed supplies for the school’s “wellness centers,” where individuals can go for help in times of stress.

Please assist in launching this effort by bringing some of the following to the collection bins in the Atrium:

• bottled water

• canned carbonated water (LaCroix, Spindrift, etc.)

• non-perishable “grab and go” snacks

• small sensory toys (e.g., fidgets, “squishies,” stress relief balls, pop tubes, etc.)

FLOWER Guild

LOOKING FOR A GREAT WAY TO CONNECT? Get involved with a fun group of men and women of all ages while providing a beautiful service to the Cathedral. Whether you love flowers or don’t know a thing about them, there’s a place for you on the Cathedral Flower Guild!

The Cathedral Flower Guild arranges all flowers for Sunday altars, weddings, funerals, special services, and receptions. But there is so much more than arranging that goes on behind the scenes and no experience is needed to get started. We have a variety of tasks that we need help with throughout the week with flexible scheduling, and many opportunities to meet and engage with other members. And if you would like to learn to arrange flowers, we will teach you, step by step, about cut flower and greenery varieties and uses, the best way to obtain and prepare them, and how to design and arrange like a pro! We also harvest material from the Cathedral grounds and our own members’ gardens; perfect for those with an interest in plants. We enjoy social and fellowship events too.

A Beginner’s Workshop will be held Saturday, November 12. (Spaces are limited!)

Email one of our co-chairs to learn more about the Flower Guild and how you can become involved: Grace Foster, gfoster418@ gmail.com, or Pam Walz, pwalz@mindspring.com.

WHAT IS AN EV AND WHY MIGHT I REQUEST ONE?

Eucharistic Visitors (known informally as EVs) are parishioners who take the consecrated sacrament from our Sunday morning Eucharists to individuals who cannot currently attend services in person. These trained lay ministers carry with them not only the Body of Christ but also Christ’s Body, the Church. They take with them our prayers for one another and our bonds that transcend space and time.

Why might someone request a visit from an EV? Certainly some recipients of this ministry have been homebound for a long period. Others, though, might appreciate a visit from an EV because:

• They have a newborn or infant in their household and are sticking close to home for a while.

• They are staying in because they (or others in their household) are immunocompromised and need to avoid large gatherings.

• They have limited mobility for a while due to surgery, injury, or recent illness.

If you would like a visit from an EV or simply want to learn more about what such a visit might involve, please contact Hillary Jones, hjones@cathedralATL.org, 404-365-1038, or Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATLorg.
