PRACTICING THE LOSS OF CONTROL – PART 2

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the practice of losing control. I said something about how healthy it is to learn how to lose control, gracefully! The reason is that all of us, at various points in our lives, do lose control. It is a part of the human condition, and it is surely a part of life itself. None of us lives without losing control, at some point or another. The art of being healthy is to learn how to lose control gracefully, with strength and resilience and patience and wisdom.

One of the graces of church participation is the grace that comes from practicing the loss of control. It’s what we practice, starting with the remembrance—every Sunday—that Christ has died and Christ is risen. Death is surely the ultimate loss of control; resurrection is the new life that emerges from that loss. We are people of resurrection.

I mentioned some ways to practice losing control: sailing a sailboat, finding a community, engaging in prayer, playing with children, playing good competitive sports. As of this past Sunday, I present another example of how we can practice the loss of control. (I remind us, that the more we practice it, in smaller circumstances, the more we can deal wisely with the larger circumstances of loss.) This past Sunday, I saw all kinds of people losing control. They were losing control of their pets! When we observe the Feast of St. Francis by bringing all sorts of pets and animals to church, we also risk having them pull us around and do things we would rather not have them do! We lose control a little bit. It’s good for us. Having a pet is good practice for learning how to lose control in a healthy way.

Further, however, I want to say a bit more about the residual fear that seems to linger among us after the pandemic. I am curious about how fearful much of our society has become. It doesn’t seem to take as much to scare us! Our minds and imaginations jump to daring conclusions. What used to seem a small risk to us can loom as a huge one. Yes, in a kind of post-traumatic syndrome situation, many of us are wary and scared.

Last week, a trusted friend asked me how long it might take for us to recover from this stress. I do not know, but I figure it may take at least as long as it took to acquire it. It might take time. There may be no magic formula solution. It might take time, just like practice takes time. It takes time to practice living in joy again instead of fear.

Meanwhile, I repeat what I have said several times in the past three years. This is no time for the church to fall into its old pattern of being a police officer or an insurance agent. The world needs those roles, of course, but they are not the proper roles of the church. The church is to be a place of joy and liberation! The church is where we practice being freed from the stresses and guilts that bind us. That is what Saint Paul meant when he said to the Galatians, “For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).

Yes, let’s practice joy. Our recent observance of the Feast of St. Francis may have given us a glimpse of that freedom! Let’s practice some joy!

CATHEDRAL Chapter

WE ARE ACCEPTING CANDIDATES FOR NOMINATION TO THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER

The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2023 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates.

As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-today activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards.

Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture.

Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities.

After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December.

The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community.

Members of the committee include: Kathryn Howell, Will Klein, Andi O’Bryan, Hubert Tate, and Sam Wilmoth. The Dean and Senior Warden Ward Bondurant serve ex-officio.

Names of recommendations should be submitted along with a brief supporting statement to any Nominating Committee member or to the Office of the Dean, 404-365-1031, or jmahood@cathedralATL.org by October 23.

LIVING FAITH—“WHY CHURCH” SERIES

This Sunday, October 9 – “Why Community?”

Room 319, 10:10 a.m.

In our back-to-the-basics series this fall, we are considering the question Why Church? through various lenses. This Sunday, we’ll be talking about community: Why is community so integral to the Christian life? Why does my relationship with God necessitate being in relationship with others?

The Living Faith class tends to take up topics (and sometimes books) exploring the intersection of the sacred and the secular. It is a friendly, engaging class with room for conversation and curiosity.

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL

This Sunday, October 9

Child Hall , 10:10 a.m. This year the class will focus on the purpose of church or, if you will, why we do what we do when we come to church. The title of the first series is “The Purpose of the Liturgy (or Why You Don’t Need to Check Your Mind at the Door When You Come to Church).” This series will talk about the powerful role that cultural liturgies, both sacred and secular, play in shaping how we see the world and live our lives.

CARING CATHEDRAL LUNCH & LEARN

Thursday, October 20 – “This is Us” Third Thursdays, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Our time together will focus on the causes of stress and anxiety and explore both psychological and spiritual ways we can better manage it in ourselves and support those who struggle around us. This conversation will be led by Christy Gituku Ed.S., LPC, Director of the Cathedral Counseling Center.
