The CATHEDRAL TIMES
SEEDS OF THANKS
By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral
Like many of you, I usually begin my day with some type of prayer. It is not always formal prayer; I don’t always haul out a prayer book or an electronic tablet. Like many of you, I also practice meditation and contemplation. I recommend such quietness and attentiveness in early morning prayers. Glorious things come into focus!
In these first weeks of November, 2022, our early mornings in Atlanta have been filled with wonderful wind and swirling leaves! This year, our autumn has been gloriously golden. How delightful it has been to let these falling leaves circle around us! Maybe these falling leaves are carrying messages to our souls, maybe like love letters. They are love letters from the passage of time. Time shows us again that beautiful things turn golden, and they fall, like these leaves. They fall into the earth to become nourishment for next spring. These swirling golden leaves are love letters from God.
One of the most satisfying of my morning prayer exercises is to try to find something to give thanks for. I try to cultivate thanks every morning. I let people come to my mind, and I try to give thanks for them. I let issues come to my mind, and I try to give thanks for them. I try to cultivate thanksgiving in the morning, even if I have to start with only a tiny bit of thanks.
Sometimes, it is difficult to find any seeds of thanks, among all the other briars and brambles grabbing at the soil of my soul. But there are usually some meager “thanks seeds” there. I keep searching. When I find such a seed, a seed of thanks, I caress it like it is a gemstone among all the duller things in the ground.
When I do hug that “thanks seed,” it somehow warms to me. It might even shudder a tiny bit. It might even try to expand. The hands of my heart massage the seed some more, and, yes, it is growing. It even grows to become a part of my heart that day.
As Thanksgiving Day approaches, try that morning practice. Practice tending the seeds of thanks that might seem scattered at the beginning of the day. Perhaps they were left there overnight, by the Master Sower of Seeds, the one who comes in the night, the One who wrestles Jacob, and the One who overshadows Mary. The Holy One often comes at night. As Thanksgiving Day approaches, try to give thanks even for the things that are falling, falling like golden leaves in their time. They will become new again, maybe in a new form. Cultivate these seeds of thanks, caress them, hug them, nurture them; and they will grow to fill your heart. Then, that thanksgiving will even grow out of your heart, and into the souls of the people around you. Happy Thanksgiving!

STREAMS OF HOPE IN THE WILDERNESS
Advent Quiet Day on Saturday, December 10
Join us for a day of quiet and contemplation, as we explore the wildernesses in our lives and in our world. During this quiet time we will see streams of hope emerge. We’ll use the Welcoming Prayer, scripture, visual expression, silence, and sharing throughout the day.
The Quiet Day will be led by the Reverend Lynnsay A. Buehler, an Episcopal priest, spiritual director, and the director of The Julian of Norwich Center of St. Bede's Episcopal Church. Lynnsay is excited to be back at the Cathedral, where she was on staff in the Pastoral Care Department from 1985-1989. The Cathedral also sponsored her throughout her ordination process. Lynnsay is an Associate of Green Bough House of Prayer, a member of Spiritual Directors International, an EfM mentor, and has trained in pastoral counseling, as well as marriage and family therapy.
The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral Campus, 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10. The cost is $20 and lunch is included. Contact Jeannie Mahood with questions, jmahood@cathedralATL.org, or 404-365-1031.

ADVENT PROCESSION WITH LESSONS AND CAROLS
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 4 P.M.
This service is a wonderful opportunity to retreat from the hectic pace of the season and contemplate its true meaning. Organized around the O Antiphons – beautiful plainchant texts which invoke the Messiah to return, sung since the 8th century at Vespers on the seven evenings leading up to Christmas – the choir gradually moves into the chancel, stopping at various stations around the Cathedral nave. Each of the biblical prophecies is expanded upon by the singing of carols, anthems, and hymns which anticipate the coming of Christ, culminating in a glorious setting of the Magnificat (The Song of Mary, Luke 1:46-55) and the singing of “O come, O come, Emmanuel,” the text of which is an English translation of the very O Antiphons that the choir has sung throughout the service. Admission is free, and all are welcome!

Living Faith —“Why Church” series “Why Now?" Room 319, 10:10 a.m. This Sunday wraps up our back-to-the-basics series considering the question “why church?” through various lenses. Our final class asks the question: Why now? Is the church even relevant anymore? With so many demands on our time, why choose church for this season of life?
Please note: Old Fashioned Sunday School will not meet this Sunday, November 20 and resumes next Sunday, November 27. Body and Soul, the monthly men’s group led by Deacon Juan Sandoval, will not meet in November or December. Cards will be available for sale in the Atrium on Sundays, starting November 20 and in the Cathedral Book Store throughout the week. You can also find them at the Cathedral Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Please contact Sara Craig-Goodell at scraiggoodell@cathedralatl.org or 404-365-1049 for any questions.

ACCESSIBILITY
LISTENING DEVICES IMPROVE AUDIO
We are always working to improve the quality and experience of worship and education at the Cathedral. Last year, hearing loops were installed in the Cathedral and Child Hall to assist individuals who are having trouble hearing. Hearing loops take a signal from a PA system and transmit it through a discreetly hidden wire loop surrounding a seating space. Anyone with a telecoil-enabled hearing aid can use the system without additional equipment by simply switching their personal hearing aid to the tele-coil/T-coil position. This T-coil program has to be activated by your audiologist.
Worshipers who don’t have telecoil-enabled hearing aids can also take advantage of the hearing loops by borrowing a listening device. Simply ask an usher for one as you enter the service. They are easy to use and provide great quality. Sound clarity is greatly increased because the distance between the speaker and the listener is bridged and background noise is nearly eliminated.
This hearing loop system covers all seating areas in the Cathedral Nave and Child Hall. For more information, contact Dan Murphy, dmurphy@cathedralATL.org.

We will once again have beautiful floral arrangements and decorations in our sacred spaces this Christmas, with your help! Donations are appreciated throughout the Christmas season.
