A LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRS

After 50 successful years of the Cathedral Antiques Show (and over $5 million donated to Atlanta-area charitable organizations), the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral of St. Philip are thrilled to begin our next chapter. Cathedral Giving By Design is a two-day event celebrating the joy of home and hospitality and benefiting a worthy, local organization. With all net proceeds from the event going directly to the beneficiary, we are excited to announce that the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (WRCDV) will be our 2023 recipient.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY

Founded in 1985, WRCDV provides compassionate services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. Through emergency and transitional housing, crisis assistance, advocacy, education and prevention, WRCDV serves more than 5,000 survivors in the Atlanta area each year. Since we announced WRCDV as our beneficiary last April, we have been inspired by women who have reached out to tell us their own experience with domestic violence, or that of a friend or family member. We continue to hear tragic stories in the news and learn about domestic violence’s prevalence, regardless of age, race and income. More than ever, we are dedicated to supporting WRCDV in their hands-on mission of saving lives and creating a world in which domestic violence no longer exists.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The 2023 event will kick off January 20 with a Friday night Welcome Home Party—including an evening of cocktails, live auction and music provided by Johnny Utah. On Saturday morning, January 21, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Editor-in-Chief Lauren Iverson welcomes Clary Bosbyshell, Christina Dandar (The Potted Boxwood), Brandon Ingram and Janie Molster for a panel titled “Beyond the Front Door: Trends in Decorating, Lifestyle and Entertaining.” Following the panel, we are thrilled to offer a live and virtual Tour of Homes. Three stunning Atlanta homes will be available to tour in person, while you can also take a virtual stroll through three homes located in Cashiers, Lake Rabun and Birmingham. You will hear and see fantastic details about these houses as well as the decor. Commentary from the homeowners, architects and designers make this an afternoon you will not want to miss. This inaugural event has been a labor of love and could not be possible without our amazing committee. The Cathedral of St. Philip is a special place that has a long history of coming together in service of the Atlanta community. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of so many parishioners who have given their time and talent to make this event a success. A special thank you to our honorary chair Mary Mercer, Dean Candler and the Cathedral clergy and staff for their support and encouragement.

With gratitude, Andi O'Bryan Kathryn Howell 2023 Co-Chair 2023 Co-Chair

SPIRITUALITY

THIRD MONDAY LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ

January 16 starting at 7:00 p.m.

Join us to renew our commitment to the path of peace in ourselves, our communities, and the world by remembering the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on his national holiday. We’ll start in Child Hall for an hour of walking the sacred labyrinth path starting at 7:00 p.m. Cathedral member, Jane Alexander, will provide live harp music during the walk. She is a Certified Music Practitioner (CMP) and plays her harp often in healthcare settings. Then, come to Mikell Chapel at 8:00 for Taizé Prayers for Peace. Originating in France, this is a beautiful, candlelit contemplative service of music, scripture, prayers and silence. Live musicians will enrich the Labyrinth walk and Taizé service. Come to one, or both, and bring a friend!

OUTREACH

ST. VERONICA’S GUILD EPIPHANY DRIVE IS UNDERWAY Epiphany is here, and so is the St. Veronica’s Guild fundraising Epiphany drive to help underwrite costs for the thousands of personal care items that the guild members give to four hard-working Atlanta ministries throughout each year. The guild uses monetary donations to purchase soap, toothpaste, shampoo and more that Emmaus House, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Church of the Common Ground, and Crossroads Community Ministries offer to hundreds of women, children, and men who they serve each month.

Emmaus House has a community food pantry in which Peoplestown families can also select needed personal care items provided by the guild.

As Emmaus House Executive Director Greg Cole states, “Personal care items are expensive and cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits. Therefore, providing these products helps people save money for other family necessities. Thanks for all that the St. Veronica's Guild does to support our work.”

Between services during January Sundays visit the Atrium table staffed by the women of St. Veronica’s Guild. Donate:

• at the guild’s table – checks, cash, or use the Atrium kiosk for online donations

• at the Atrium kiosk any day of the week

• or visit cathedralATL.org/epiphany

Any monetary donation, small or sizeable, is valued and carefully used. St. Veronica’s Guild thanks you for your caring generosity.

A JOURNEY THROUGH HOMES AND HOSPITALITY TOUR OF HOMES

SATURDAY, JANUARY 21 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

We are thrilled to offer a live and virtual Tour of Homes. Three stunning Atlanta homes will be available to tour inperson, but you can also take a virtual stroll through three homes located in Cashiers, Lake Rabun and Birmingham (virtual homes will available by link for ticket holders for 5 days). You will hear and see fantastic details about these houses as well as the decor. Details from the homeowners, architects and designers will make this an experience you will not want to miss.

CLASSIC REVIVAL

Nestled on a lovely street in Buckhead, this amazing home is a true gem. The house was built in 1992. The current homeowner bought the house in 2020 and made some minor decorative changes with the help of Mike Hammersmith. The changes included reworking the family room fireplace for TV placement, putting in the black and white tile in the front hall and made it home. The flow and ease of living along with the light and well-defined spaces that flow easily makes entertaining easy for adults and kids. The talented Caroline Willis Interiors made it a comfortable family home that still reflects the homeowners’ edited style. The house is full of pieces that are meaningful to the homeowners such as family antiques, art, photos, books and collections of art, some inherited, many from local Atlanta galleries and some works by good friends. Clinton Cenac and Julian Philips have maintained and created a backyard that consists of a covered screened-in porch that overlooks the pool. It has years of mature trees and plants that make it a very private setting.

BROOKHAVEN CHARMER

This stunning home located in the historic Brookhaven neighborhood was built in 1929 and was updated by T. Blake Segars, Cullens and Co., and Lauren McDaniel Interiors in 2019 to meet the family’s needs. As soon at the current owners walked into the house, they knew that it was something special. They relocated the kitchen to make it the hub of the house. They also added a scullery and mudroom, added a bedroom and baths upstairs and reconfigured the upstairs to add a laundry room. Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture and Design designed the front landscape and elevations.

WOODLAND COTTAGE

This charming Clem Ford, Tuxedo Park traditional home was built in 1958 and updated in 2019 by T. Blake Segars, Ben Dailey & Sons and Helen Davis Designs to meet the needs of a busy family with three boys. The back porch serves as a family room and a newly renovated kitchen and breakfast room are perfect locales for entertaining. Outside, Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture and Design did a complete overhaul of the backyard and garden. In addition, the newly updated upstairs recreation room made the homeowners’ dream of having all three boys together a reality.

HONORARY CHAIR, MARY MERCER

Mary Mercer has served at the Cathedral of St. Philip with great dedication and energy in innumerable ways —distinguishing herself as a faithful servant leader both within and beyond the parish. She began volunteering with the Cathedral Antiques Show in 2007 and took on the job of Chair in 2010. Since 2010, Mary has served as President of Episcopal Church Women, as a member of the Cathedral Chapter Class of 2013 and Vice President of Friends of Cathedral Music Board. She has also served on the Funeral Guild and is a member of St. Anne’s Guild and helped establish the Cathedral’s Prison Ministry. When asked about this year’s beneficiary, Mary said, “It is my hope that you will embrace this organization and join me in supporting WRCDV either as a sponsor or a patron of Cathedral Giving by Design. Please help us meet the needs of the battered women and children in our community.”

VIRTUAL TOUR OF HOMES

BIRMINGHAM

Built in 2014, renowned architect James Carter designed his brick Georgian home in the Mountain Brook neighborhood of Birmingham with his personal collections and love of books in mind. Throughout the home, including the octagonal dining room, stairway, reception hall and primary bedroom, Carter’s favorite books fill the cases with warmth and personality. Carter’s favorite room is the library, where he spends most of his time. The room, paneled in antique white oak and complete with French doors that provide a peek of the meticulously landscaped back garden is “elegant, yet still cozy.” Carter collaborated with Norman Kent Johnson on the landscape design, as well as Jane Hoke Bynum on the interiors.

CASHIERS

Bought in February of 2021, this cozy clapboard-style home is one of the first homes built in the Mountaintop development in Cashiers.

Designed by D. Stanley Dixon Architect of Atlanta, the portico, lattice work and stone chimneys give the abode a New England feel. Looking toward the golf course and mountains, the design takes into consideration the angles of the sun to give the house the perfect light. As you open the front door, you are greeted with a view looking directly through the house at the golf course and beyond. The outdoor mountain feel is reflected in the finishes of interiors. A classic kitchen opens directly to the beautiful covered porch, where there is additional place for dining, living and seating by a fireplace.

LAKE RABUN

Originally built in 1997 by architect Stuart Alston, this charming Lake Rabun home was purchased and renovated by the current owner, Jason Moattar, in 2017. Born and raised in Atlanta, Moattar says he never knew how much he loved the outdoors until he bought the home. “I love the house and its position on the lake,” says Moattar. “Being set in the beginning of the narrows, we are on a peak and see nothing really across the lake or on either side.” Carefully selected art graces every room, as well as perfectly placed rugs from Moattar. Favorite spaces include a classic screened-in porch with a bed swing, as well as a cozy lower level. Moattar adds, “It is always an unexpected area when I bring people downstairs. They have no idea that the house has so many areas and spaces!”

PRAYER and the CONTEMPLATIVE IMAGINATION

A Mini-Retreat by Carl McColman Saturday, January 28

“Be still and know that I am God” is a promise from the Psalms: a promise that God may be known through stillness, silence, and contemplation. But how do we truly know God — and how does stillness truly invite us into this deeper way of knowing? Explore these questions in this featured presentation given by Carl McColman, speaker and teacher on mystical spirituality and contemplative living. This event is in-person only, and will be held on Saturday, January 28 from 9–12, in Child Hall.

Our facilitator, Carl McColman, is the author of many books, including Eternal Heart and The Big Book of Christian Mysticism (available in the Cathedral Book Store). Based in Atlanta, he is a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer Introductory Workshops and a popular blogger, podcaster and retreat leader.

Visit cathedralbookstore.org/carl to learn more and register.

Thursday February 9, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or Saturday, February 11, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.

Kristen E. Vincent is author of the award-winning book, A Bead and a Prayer: A Beginner’s Guide to Protestant Prayer Beads. Join her as she shares the history, symbolism, and benefits of beads in prayer, then guides you through the process of making and using your own set of Anglican prayer beads.

Kristen has a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and is a graduate of the two-year Academy for Spiritual Formation. She is also a spiritual director with certification as a Narrative Enneagram Practitioner.

During the workshop, each participant will follow along to make a full set of Anglican prayer beads. All necessary materials will be provided on the day of the event and are included in the $18 ticket cost.
