The CATHEDRAL TIMES

THE FEAST DAY OF THOMAS AQUINAS

The Episcopal Church, in our appointed feast days, actually remembers the brilliant Roman Catholic theologian, Thomas Aquinas. Of course, when Aquinas lived in the 13th century, the Episcopal Church (as the Church of England) was still a part of the Western Catholic Church centered in Rome. His feast day is January 28.

Here at the Cathedral of St. Philip, in Atlanta, some eight centuries after Thomas lived and thousands of miles from where he lived, we will observe the Feast of Thomas Aquinas at our afternoon evensong on Sunday, January 29.

Amidst the profound theology of Thomas, he also wrote texts for hymns. And he wrote two famous texts for the Feast of Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ). One such text was the hymn we often sing at communion, “Humbly I Adore Thee.” What a beautiful opening stanza, translated as, “Humbly I adore thee, verity unseen/ Whom thy glory hidest, ‘neath these shadows mean.”

I give thanks for his life and theology, by combining his spirit with that of Teilhard de Chardin; and I write my own poem this week as a tribute to them. Here it is:

HOLY COMMUNION (a sonnet after Aquinas and Teilhard)

The ocean and the beach are the wine and the bread, The chalice and the paten who nourish the world. The sea and the earth are the chalice and the paten, The golden dome and the generous plate.

The marsh creek and mud are the blood and the body, The holy mysteries offered twice daily in the tide.

“O memorial wondrous, of the Lord’s own death; Living Bread that givest all thy creatures breath, Grant my spirit ever by thy life may live, To my taste thy sweetness never failing give.”

So I sing to the earth and the sea. So I offer my heart and desire.

The hovering sky overhead is the Spirit, With warm and wild illuminating fire.

This weekend we celebrated the inaugural Cathedral Giving By Design, which carried on many of the traditions of the 50 years of the Cathedral Antiques Show in a new format. Friday night kicked off the festivities with a “Welcome Home” party and live auction, and Saturday we gathered to hear an esteemed panel of experts discuss design trends, all followed by the Tour of Homes.

Many thanks to all who supported the event, with proceeds going to the incredible work of Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence.

OUTREACH

ST. VERONICA’S GUILD EPIPHANY DRIVE Q&A

During St. Veronica’s January Epiphany Drive, common questions asked at the Atrium table on Sundays include:

Q: Who benefits from the funds you are raising?

A: The funds help underwrite the cost of personal care items like soap and toothpaste that the Guild provides throughout the year to Crossroads Community Ministries, Church of the Common Ground, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, and Emmaus House.

Q: Are you buying the soap, toothpaste, etc. that you give?

A: Yes. In the first weeks of the pandemic we realized we could not collect items from donors, but ministries urgently needed many supplies like soap to help people maintain personal hygiene. Serendipitously, we learned that by purchasing in bulk we could meet the specific needs of ministries as well as check quality and control cost. We have continued the practice, as it also consistently provides the total amounts needed by the ministries.

Q: If I have collected lotion, shampoo, soap, etc. on trips, can I still give them to you?

A: Yes, new, unopened items can be left in the Information/ Security Office and will be distributed to the ministries. We appreciate the support of our ministry.

Q: What is the significance of the camel logo for the Epiphany Drive?

A: Glad you asked. The Wise Men reportedly rode camels to bring their gifts to the Christ Child. We hope the camel logo inspires gifts. Although the official Epiphany Drive is ending this month, all monetary donations small and sizeable made during the year will be gratefully received and carefully used to purchase the thousands of personal care items given throughout the year.

SPIRITUALITY

SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE

Seeing the Unseen: A bishop and gun safety activist offers a way forward from opposing viewpoints

Saturday, February 18, 2023

9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Child Hall

Have you ever walked away from a conversation because of the partisan politics it evoked and later regretted it? Have you ever wondered how you might find someone who could broaden your understanding about an issue without judging you for not agreeing with them? Have you ever thought there was a better way to frame an issue than the positions being defended by our political parties?

Bishop Mark Beckwith says that it doesn't have to be this way. He urges us to find the courage to look directly at those whose views and experiences are different from our own so that we might see the goodness that is inherent in all things. “We are trained to think,” Beckwith says, “yet the cultural emphasis on thinking has not been applied to our ability to see . . . We are not as well trained in seeing the world’s fullness–pain and joy, compassion and cruelty. We regularly receive glimpses of pain and joy, but they are often presented in such a way as to reinforce our thinking.”

Bishop Beckwith, who formerly served as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark (NJ), developed strategies for learning how to see in this way while working with religious and other leaders to address a number of politically charged issues. He is the co-founder of Faith Leaders for Ending Gun Violence, a national ecumenical group of diverse religious leaders; has been part of the leadership team for Braver Angels, a national movement that seeks to depolarize America; and is the author of Seeing the Unseen: Beyond Prejudices, Paradigms and Party Lines (Morehouse Publishing, 2022).

PRAYER and the CONTEMPLATIVE IMAGINATION

A Mini-Retreat by Carl McColman

Saturday, January 28

“Be still and know that I am God” is a promise from the Psalms: a promise that God may be known through stillness, silence, and contemplation. But how do we truly know God — and how does stillness truly invite us into this deeper way of knowing? Explore these questions in this featured presentation given by Carl McColman, speaker and teacher on mystical spirituality and contemplative living. This event is in-person only, and will be held on Saturday, January 28 from 9–12, in Child Hall. Tickets are $45 (or $35 for students.)

Our facilitator, Carl McColman, is the author of many books, including Eternal Heart and The Big Book of Christian Mysticism (available in the Cathedral Book Store). Based in Atlanta, he is a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer Introductory Workshops and a popular blogger, podcaster and retreat leader. Visit cathedralbookstore.org/carl to learn more and register.

Thursday February 9, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or Saturday, February 11, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.

Kristen E. Vincent is author of the award-winning book, A Bead and a Prayer: A Beginner’s Guide to Protestant Prayer Beads. Join her as she shares the history, symbolism, and benefits of beads in prayer, then guides you through the process of making and using your own set of Anglican prayer beads.

Kristen has a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and is a graduate of the two-year Academy for Spiritual Formation. She is also a spiritual director with certification as a Narrative Enneagram Practitioner.

During the workshop, each participant will follow along to make a full set of Anglican prayer beads. All necessary materials will be provided on the day of the event and are included in the $18 ticket cost.

STEWARDSHIP

NEW ONLINE GIVING PLATFORM

The Cathedral is moving to a new platform to process online and credit card contributions. Because the new platform is a part of the Cathedral’s TouchPoint database, parishioners will be able to make a contribution, set up a pledge, view contribution history, and print statements in one place. Cathedral stewardship staff will work with parishioners to help move information to the new system over the coming weeks. As part of this process, the Cathedral app will take the place of the atrium kiosk for onsite donations and purchases.

You can visit cathedralATL.org/touchpoint to log in to your TouchPoint account and download the Cathedral app by visiting your phone's app store and searching “Cathedral of St. Philip.” As always, contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or drocchio@cathedralATL.org for more information.
