CHORAL EUCHARIST FOR ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED On All Saints’ Sunday, November 5, at 4 p.m., the Cathedral will offer a Choral Requiem Eucharist in remembrance of members and friends of the Cathedral who have died during the past year. The image-rich and comforting texts of the Requiem mass – the ancient Christian burial service – will be prayed this year using the music of Requiem by Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986), sung by the Cathedral Choir and accompanied by a chamber orchestra and organ. Whether you attend to mourn, to accompany those who are mourning, or simply to contemplate the mystery of heaven, we hope you will be comforted, inspired, and strengthened by it. This service will be livestreamed at cathedralATL.org/worship but will not be available on future dates so please join us on November 5 in-person or online.

The Dean's Forum with Eddy Von Mueller 10:10 a.m, Child Hall Author, filmmaker and entertainment historian Eddy Von Mueller, co-editor of the 2017 Frankenstein: How a Monster Became an Icon, leads a discussion of the groundbreaking 1816 novel. Mary Shelley’s tale of a young genius deformed by ambition and the hideous artificial being he abandoned to a halflife of rage and isolation would become one of the foundational myths of the modern age, endlessly adapted, reimagined, referenced, and spoofed in every conceivable medium, from cinema to opera.

Drawing on the book Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters by three scholars from the Yale Institute for Faith and Culture, we will reflect on some core questions of human existence within the context of our Christian calling and hope. All are welcome!

Young Professionals: Seeking God in Our Daily Lives 10:10 a.m., Room 368 Each Sunday, our Young Professionals group gathers for our formation offering: “Seeking God in Our Daily Lives.” During our time together, we explore the story of our Christian faith and how we participate in that larger story. We faithfully engage with scripture as we endeavor to be co-participants in God’s desire for us in the world.

The Cathedral Farmers Market improves the quality of life for customers by providing fresh and nutritious food directly from farmers and producers in the region. The market takes place in the Cathedral parking lot Saturday mornings from March through December from 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m.

With the proceeds from the auction, the market hopes to achieve the following goals: •

Increase access to fresh, local food in partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia.

• Purchase fresh fruits and veggies to donate to the local food pantry from our farmers.

• Enhance education and children’s programming.

• Provide a stipend to our weekly musicians.

• Cover operating costs.

Chapter NOMINATIONS The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2024 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates.

As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards.

Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture. Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities.

After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December.

The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community.

Members of the committee include: Angelica Baños, Ward Bondurant, Mary Caroline Cravens, Merritt Dyke, Bill Monroe, Kate Stotts, Sara Chapman, Anne Matthews, Kate Brewer, Bryan Kibler, and Hubert Tate. The Dean serves ex-officio.

SPIRITUALITY ADVENT QUIET DAY How Can It Be? Entering the Mystery of the Incarnation An Advent Quiet Day Saturday, December 2, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

An angel appears to Mary and reports that she will give birth to the Son of God. Before she can make her transformative declaration, “Let it be me,” Mary first asks, “How can it be?” Zechariah, the shepherds, and others in Scripture offer similar questions when confronted by the mystery of God. How can it be? How can it be that the God of the universe chose to become human? How can it be that this baby is God Made Flesh, God With Us, the Messiah? It’s such an honest, human question.

We try so hard to understand God with our rational minds. Yet God is Mystery; it’s not possible to comprehend God and God’s ways. The invitation, then, is first to allow compassionate space for our questions and doubts. Then we can let our minds rest and enter into Mystery; we can follow the example of Mary and others and let go, trust, and open ourselves to a Love that is beyond anything we could ever hope for or imagine.

Join us for our annual Advent Quiet Day as we sit with the mystery of God’s incarnation. Using a variety of spiritual practices, we’ll hold space for our questions and doubts, sit with the mystery of God, and prepare to receive the marvelous, unfathomable gift of God’s Son this Christmas. The day will be led by Kristen E. Vincent, an author, spiritual director, and retreat leader who holds a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and is a graduate of the Academy for Spiritual Formation.

The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, December 2. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. PASTORAL Care THE MINISTRY OF EUCHARISTIC VISITS Help us stay connected with one another by becoming a Eucharistic Visitor or receiving Eucharistic Visits!

Eucharistic Visitors (known informally as EVs) are parishioners who take the consecrated sacrament from our Sunday morning Eucharists to individuals who cannot currently attend services in person. These trained lay ministers carry with them not only the Body of Christ but also Christ’s Body, the Church. They take with them our prayers for one another and our bonds that transcend space and time.

This is an incredibly meaningful ministry for everyone involved.

Why might someone become a Eucharistic Visitor? This is an important and very meaningful ministry, not only for those being visited but also for the visitors. Eucharistic Visitors find that this ministry helps them put their faith into practice, develop their gifts for pastoral ministry, and deepen their own faith.

Why might someone request a visit from an EV? Certainly some recipients of this ministry have been homebound for a long period.

Others, though, might appreciate a visit from an EV because: • They have a newborn or infant in their household and are sticking close to home for a while.

• They are staying in because they (or others in their household) are immunocompromised and need to avoid large gatherings.

• They have limited mobility for a while due to surgery, injury, or recent illness.

VOLUNTEER AT RESPITE CARE ATLANTA Respite Care Atlanta is seeking volunteers for its weekly respite program assisting adults living with mild-to-moderate dementia.

Volunteers get to share their ideas and talents while helping to provide a safe and stimulating environment for program participants.

The next volunteer session is Monday, November 13, from 10-11 a.m.

HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS The Habitat Christmas delivery committee will again be creating boxes of goodies for 27 of the families for whom the Cathedral has helped build homes. As in the past, we are hoping to gather tins of cookies, loaves of bread, nuts, and fruit to fill the boxes, and we have also added a few new options for other donations to our list this year.

If you would like to contribute items for the baskets or be present for the fun of delivering baskets this year, sign up at cathedralATL.org/ habitatbaskets.

Donations for the baskets should be dropped off in conference room 239 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, December 8. Basket delivery will take place on Saturday, December 9.
