NOMINEES FOR THE CHAPTER CLASS OF 2026

The Cathedral Nominating Committee has submitted the following slate of candidates, approved by the Chapter, to be voted on by the parish at the annual Parish Meeting, which will take place on Sunday, December 10 at 10 a.m. in Child Hall. The Dean has appointed Geoff DeLong as Senior Warden for 2024-2025. Melody Palmore continues her two-year term as Junior Warden. Their biographies are on page 4.

ANDREA BLOCK

MARY HALL PERRIN

Andrea has been active at the Cathedral since 2010 and is currently involved with Godly Play, the Cathedral Towers Board, and the Farmers Market Advisory Committee. Professionally, Andrea is a litigation attorney, and her current law practice focuses on representing survivors of childhood sexual abuse. In the wider community Andrea is involved with her children’s schools, and previously volunteered for various therapeutic horseback riding programs. Andrea grew up riding horses and is now riding along with her daughters, MJ and Caroline. In addition to parenting together, Andrea and her husband, Aaron, run a boutique law firm together.

Mary joined the Cathedral in 1976 and is currently the Honorary Chair of the 2024 Cathedral Giving by Design. She also serves on the Cathedral Endowment Board, Friends of Cathedral Music Board, the Funeral Guild, St. Anne’s Guild, Altar Guild and as a Lay Reader. In the past she has chaired the Cathedral Antiques Show, served on the Chapter, including as Jr. Warden, as well as on the search committee for the dean, and many other Cathedral organizations including the Cathedral Choir. Mary has retired from professional work but currently serves as Secretary for the HOA Board of Trustees where she lives and has served on boards for garden clubs and neighborhood associations. She is widowed with adult children and enjoys six grandchildren.

MICHAEL CARRIN

BRONSON SMITH

Michael has been a communicant at St. Philip’s

Bronson has been a Cathedral member since he was a child and he currently serves as an usher and participates in the Thursday Morning Men’s Group.

Previously he assisted with the Cathedral Farmers Market and before that played the role of Joseph in the Christmas Pageant! Career-wise he is the Chief Investment Officer for Centennial Holding Company. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Virginia, and MBA is from Emory University. His service to the community includes the University of Virginia College of Arts & Sciences Atlanta Regional Board, and the Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Corporate Leadership Council. He also completed Christian Leadership Concepts, a two-year program. Bronson and his wife, Laura, are parents to three young children: Perry, Bronson, and Hilliard.

DAISY STARR

Mike has been a Cathedral member since 1991.

He currently serves as a Children’s Chapel leader, and Middle and High School Sunday School teacher, and a Sunday Usher. Previously he was involved with the Newcomers’ Committee, Village Visit hosting, and Foyers. Professionally he is a graduate of Georgia Tech, a Professional Engineer, and Vice President of Engineering at Dycom Industries. His civic activities include coaching youth sports, HOA membership and leadership, and ALTA leadership. Mike and his wife,

Daisy has been a Cathedral member for nearly ten years. She is currently active as a Godly Play teacher, and with the Flower Guild, Green Aprons, and Cathedral Giving By Design. She also participated in the Thrift House Fashion Show and the Community Charity Council.

Daisy has served in various capacities at the Cathedral Preschool and at Morris Brandon Elementary School. Professionally, Daisy works at the Cathedral Preschool and in the past worked for The Westminster Schools and Coxe Curry & Associates. Daisy and her husband, Mac, are raising three children: Harley, Jack, and Georgia.

GOING THERE: CONTEMPLATING DEATH TO INVIGORATE LIFE Wednesdays, January 3 - February 7, 6–8 p.m.

Are you curious about death and dying but don’t know where or how to talk about it? Would you like to have a safe and supportive environment in which to gently explore your thoughts?

Join Cathedral member and Conscious Dying Coach, Susan Patterson, in this small group course beginning January 3. Over the course of six two-hour sessions, the group will focus on five contemplation topics, participate in grounding exercises, and share personal insights in order to increase our comfort level with dying and death; increase our ability to envision the experiences and connections that bring deep meaning to our lives, and, create action steps to share our thoughts, wishes and plans with others.

Sessions will take place at the Cathedral on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m., January 3 - February 7.

A fee of $150 covers all materials and Susan’s leadership.

the intersection of safe housing and improved health. Melody and her husband, Marvin, have two adult children: Sarah and Jack.

OUTREACH HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS

ST. MONICA’S GUILD TOY DRIVE Please join St. Monica’s Guild in a toy drive to assist Emmaus House in providing a cheerful Christmas to all in their neighborhood. Santa and Mrs. Claus come to Emmaus House and give presents to more than 550 children from all over Atlanta.

Here’s how you can help: • Donate gifts: Bring new, unwrapped gifts to the bins in the Atrium November 19–December 17. The Emmaus House Holiday Guide document, with suggested gifts by age and gender, is available at cathedralATL.org/toydrive.

• Make a contribution: $35 will sponsor a child but any donation amount is helpful and appreciated. Make checks payable to “The Cathedral of St. Philip” and write Toy Drive in the memo line. Checks can be handed to a guild member on Sunday mornings at the table in the Atrium or mailed to the Cathedral – Attention St. Monica’s Guild.

• Donations can also be made online by going to cathedralATL.org/toydrive.

The Habitat Christmas delivery committee will again be creating boxes of goodies for 27 of the families for whom the Cathedral has helped build homes. As in the past, we are hoping to gather tins of cookies, loaves of bread, nuts, and fruit to fill the boxes, and we have also added a few new options for other donations to our list this year.

If you would like to contribute items for the baskets or be present for the fun of delivering baskets this year, sign up at cathedralATL.org/habitatbaskets.

Donations for the baskets should be dropped off in conference room 239 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, December 8. Basket delivery will take place on Saturday, December 9.

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY There are a few openings for first-year Education for Ministry (EfM) students beginning in January. Weekly meetings are held on Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon and are led by the Rev. Cathy Zappa and Rick Tyler.

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of the School of Theology of the University of the South. Participants commit one year at a time (four years total) to meet weekly in seminars where mentors will guide them in: • Studying the Bible, church history, and theology.

• Developing a wonderful community.

• Practicing the art of theological reflection, which provides new insights regarding our life experiences and the world in which we live.

Participants should expect to spend 2-4 hours reading the weekly assignments, but there are no tests or papers to prepare. We also take a summer vacation from June through August. To enroll or get more information, please contact the Rev. Cathy Zappa, 404-365-1043, czappa@ cathedralATL.org.

HISPANIC Ministries LAS POSADAS Wednesday, December 20, 6 p.m., Meet at the Lanier House The posadas are a traditional celebration (known as a novena) that takes place nine days before Christmas, that is, from December 16–24. Each of the nine days represents a value such as humility, strength, detachment, charity, trust, justice, purity, joy and generosity.

Children and adults take to the streets to make the “pilgrimage” which consists of visiting nine houses–one per day–until they find the house where they can lodge. Pilgrims follow a statue known as a “mystery” that can be of the figure of Mary, Joseph, an angel or a donkey, and is also accompanied by popular songs and prayers. Finally, the hosts offer foods provided by the pilgrims (peregrinos). At the end of the evening, the traditional seven-point piñata is broken by the children.

Though we are only celebrating one night of the posada, it will be a marvelous evening of singing, eating and joining in Mary and Joseph’s travels to Bethlehem. We will start our journey at the Lanier House, travel to the Deanery for dinner, and finally move to Child Hall to break the piñata.

If you wish to enjoy the posada, there will be sign up sheets to bring a food item to share with all that attend; appetizers, main dish, or dessert. All are welcome!
