A LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRS

January 19-20, 2024 will be an exciting few days celebrating the joy of home and hospitality, with all net proceeds benefiting our 2024 beneficiary, The Boyce L. Ansley School. Continuing a long tradition of philanthropic giving to the Atlanta community, the weekend will be a design and entertainment showcase. We hope many of you are able to join us for the Welcome Party, Designer Panel, and Tour of Homes. It is going to be a spectacular weekend and we look forward to seeing you!

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY The Boyce L. Ansley School educates children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta and provides vital support services for families to break generational cycles of poverty and housing insecurity. The school’s mission is to provide rigorous, high-quality education and collaborative family support, while taking into consideration the unique traumas associated with experiencing homelessness, in order to empower children and families to thrive beyond their circumstance. There are almost 2,000 children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta schools, and countless more who are not even enrolled. Trauma, disrupted education, and challenging circumstances leave them struggling academically. The scholars, and their family unit, thrive within the school’s framework of structure and support, all of which are provided tuition-free. For the 2023-2024 school year, the Ansley School will serve over 60 students and 40 families, in Kindergarten through the fourth grade.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The 2024 event will kick-off January 19 with a Friday night Welcome Home Party: an evening of cocktails, food by Soiree and a live auction. On Saturday morning, January 20, Christina Dandar of The Potted Boxwood welcomes Paloma Contreras, Heather Dewberry, Will Huff, Mallory Mathison Glenn and Melanie Turner for a panel titled: “Beyond the Front Door: Trends in Decorating, Lifestyles, and Entertaining.”

Following the panel, we will offer a highly anticipated Tour of Homes. Four stunning Atlanta homes will be available to tour in person. Get ready to experience incredible details by the homes’ designers, architects, and homeowners.

This event has been a labor of love and would not be possible without our wonderful committee. The Cathedral of St. Philip is a special place, with a long history of coming together with the Atlanta community, to serve those in need. We want to express our sincere gratitude to those who have supported Cathedral Giving by Design and the Ansley School. A special thank you to our Honorary Chair, Mary Perrin, Dean Candler and the Cathedral clergy and staff for their support and guidance.

COFFEE AND CONVERSATIONS Saturday, January 27, 9–11 a.m., St. Mary’s Chapel All God’s Children, the Cathedral’s community of LGBTQ+ members, families and friends, will be hosting coffee and conversations in St. Mary’s Chapel on January 27, 2024 from 9-11 a.m. We will gather for a guided conversation on our respective faith journeys within the context of being an LGBTQ+ person. Parishioners who do not identify as LGBTQ+ are welcome to participate and share their journey of being a loving ally, friend, or family member. Coffee and donuts will be provided. ADULT Education ADULT EDUCATION THIS SUNDAY Old Fashioned Sunday School: God and Social Action After Martin Luther King, Jr. 10:10 a.m., Child Hall There can be no question about how much we admire the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a social activist. We named streets after him. We erected statutes of him. We call upon his name whenever movements for social justice erupt in violence. We even set aside a holiday to honor him. It’s not as clear, though, that we remember or even believe what he said about why he did what he did. Dr. King talked about God. He talked about virtue. He talked about victory as reconciliation.

Sometimes it feels like we have forgotten what he said on purpose. Maybe, it’s just too challenging. This week, Canon Maxwell will look at some of what Dr. King actually said and how his vision of God and social action might guide us toward the more perfect union we believe God is calling us to become.

Living Faith 10:10 a.m., Room 239 Join Canons Lauren Holder, Julia Mitchener, and Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another. All are welcome!

Young Professionals: Exploring Our Faith and Our Spirituality 10:10 a.m., Room 368 For the next few Sundays, we will examine the Biblical understanding of our faith and spiritual life, led by the Rev. Salmoon Bashir. Our discussions will center around how one can begin to gain spiritual knowledge and nurture their relationship with God. We will also focus on spiritual growth by exploring various methods found in the Christian traditions.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE POINT-IN-TIME COUNT Thursday, January 25 The Point-in-Time Count is an annual survey of people experiencing homelessness conducted each January in communities around the country. It is a key component in helping our neighbors receive the assistance they need to stay safe and sheltered.

The Point-in-Time Count depends on volunteers for its completion. This year, the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener will take part in a daytime count on the morning of Thursday, January 25 with our partner agency Emmaus House. There are spots available for several parishioners to join in. TOUR OF HOMES THE PINK CASTLE The Calhoun-Thornwell Estate, known locally as the Pink Castle, is now home to designer Melanie Turner and her husband, builder Stan Benecki. Acclaimed Atlanta architect, Philip Trammel Shutze, designed and built the Venetian villa-inspired home in the 1920s. As designer Melanie Turner’s personal home, the home showcases many original details, such as crystal light fixtures, hand-painted murals, and plasterwork.

The vivid new traditional home artfully features many of the owner’s heirloom furnishings for a bright and cheerful space that is ideal for a busy young family.

CLASSIC GEORGIAN ESTATE This 1940’s Georgian-style home, by Wyatt Designs, is a perfect blend of fresh style and antique tradition. After purchasing the home, the homeowners embarked on a three-year complete renovation that honors its history and architectural character, while maintaining classic English design. This home is ready to entertain, welcoming guests to gracious interior spaces and immaculate grounds.

Christina Dandar, of The Potted Boxwood, will return this year as the moderator for a panel discussion among five acclaimed interior designers: Melanie Turner, Paloma Contreras, Heather Dewberry, Will Huff and Mallory Mathison Glenn.

BEYOND THE FRONT DOOR: SPEAKERS CHRISTINA DANDAR, Moderator Christina Dandar is the founder of the interior design and luxury lifestyle brand, The Potted Boxwood. While pursuing a master’s degree in education at SMU, Christina began sharing traditional homes and eye-catching facades on her daily walks through the Park Cities on Instagram. Today, with more than 180,000 followers, Christina continues to share her love of timeless design with the world through social media, her blog, and chic home tours.

PALOMA CONTRERAS Paloma Contreras is an acclaimed interior designer based in Houston, Texas. Paloma’s design sensibility is a modern take on traditional style, gravitating towards classic silhouettes and timeless pieces paired with a touch of glamour and an infusion of color. She has been repeatedly named to the prestigious ELLE Decor “A-List” and her work has been featured in numerous publications. HEATHER DEWBERRY & WILL HUFF Huff-Dewberry, Inc. is a boutique residential interior design firm based in Atlanta. MELANIE TURNER Melanie Turner is an advocate for not only surrounding yourself with beauty, but also living beautifully. Balance, scale, light and subtle color, or lack thereof, all factor into her residences, creating a timeless effect.

Melanie Turner Interiors has been recognized three times as ADAC’s Southeastern Residential Designer of the Year, was named Top 10 Designer

by Traditional Homes, and was awarded Kitchen of the Year by Architectural Digest. Melanie’s book, Inviting Interiors: A Fresh Take on Beautiful Rooms, gives readers a glimpse into her portfolio.

HONORARY CHAIR, MARY PERRIN Mary Perrin became a member of the Cathedral of St Philip in 1976, when she married Dennis Hall, and has served with dedication and enthusiasm ever since. Cathedral Giving By Design is proud to have Mary as the Honorary Chair.

She inspires us to serve with energetic grace.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, Mary moved to Atlanta in the early 1970’s. Mary and Dennis’ children, Austin and Mary Stuart, were baptized and confirmed at the Cathedral. They were active in children’s choirs, youth acolyte teams, and youth groups. While they were in school, Mary was the president of every PTA, including as chair of the Parents Council at the University of the South, Sewanee. Church and school have always been a focus for Mary and her family.

Mary has experienced great joy in her life and has also known great loss. Mary was widowed in 1998. While serving as the Director of Development for the Episcopal Media Center, she met Walter Perrin and they were married in 2006. Walter passed away in 2017. Mary is grateful to call Walter’s children her own. She loves, and spends a lot of time with, all six of her grandchildren.

Today, Mary is once again serving as a member of the Cathedral Chapter. Previously, Mary served on the Chapter from 1999 to 2001, including the role of Jr. Warden. Mary’s son, Austin, shares that “when Mom does something, she is deeply committed.” Mary sits on the Cathedral Endowment Board and the Board of the Friends of Cathedral Music. She is also active in the Altar Guild, the Funeral Guild, St. Anne’s Guild, where she has been a member since 1979, and serves regularly as a lay reader. Previously, Mary was the Chair of the Cathedral Antiques Show in 1995 and on the search committee for Dean Candler.

Cathedral Giving by Design and the Ansley School are blessed that Mary has chosen to devote her boundless energy and enthusiasm to this event. Especially moved by the mission of the school, Mary understands that the “Ansley School is changing the lives of extremely vulnerable children and their families in Atlanta.” She is excited to help share the story of the Ansley School.

SPIRITUALITY THIRD MONDAY LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ PRAYERS FOR PEACE Monday, January 15, 7 p.m.

Child Hall and Mikell Chapel Join us to renew our commitment to the path of peace in ourselves, our communities, and the world by remembering the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on his national holiday.

We’ll start in Child Hall for an hour of walking the sacred labyrinth path starting at 7 p.m. Then, come to Mikell Chapel at 8 p.m. for Taizé Prayers for Peace. Originating in France, this is a beautiful, candlelit contemplative service of music, scripture, prayers and silence.

Come to one, or both, and bring a friend!

ST. VERONICA’S GUILD EPIPHANY DRIVE – BY THE NUMBERS AND FOR THE PEOPLE In 2023 St. Veronica’s Guild purchased and gave over 11,000 personal care items, including soap, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, deodorant, and more to Crossroads Community Ministries, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Church of the Common Ground, and Emmaus House. These toiletries helped several thousand people, including children, facing poverty, health, and housing challenges to maintain dignity as they rebuilt their lives.

During this 2024 Epiphany Drive, St. Veronica’s Guild is grateful for your donations to help continue this important ministry. Purchasing costs are carefully controlled, but inflation is bringing costs close to $4,500 annually. Donations of any size make a big difference. A few dollars add family size soap bars for the Emmaus House food pantry or fill a Holy Comforter Friendship Center parishioner’s hygiene kit.

Holy Comforter Episcopal Church serves persons who are marginalized by mental health challenges and poverty. As the Reverend Ashley Carr, Holy Comforter’s Vicar, stated, “We are deeply grateful for your efforts; our members greatly value the items you send.

Many of our people wouldn’t have hygiene items if it weren’t for those you provide, because they can’t afford them.”
