The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · May 19, 2024

Four of the Cathedral’s high school seniors preached last week on Youth Sunday! Excerpts from their sermons are below; you can find the full text and videos at cathedralATL.org/sermons.

SOPHIE LATZ:

… I’ve learned that God doesn’t appear in elaborate displays, but instead, with steadfast love, supports us in big and small moments. I feel God’s presence as I take that first stroke on the water in the mornings, breaking the perfectly still water we call glass, then pausing to listen to the leaves rustling, the birds chirping, the water splashing up along the shore. I feel God in the warm rays of sunshine, in the cool breeze, in the peace of being outdoors. I feel God’s presence as I acolyte and process in, standing up at the altar and hearing the beautiful choir surround me with music. I feel God’s presence as I eat Fellini’s with the other members of youth, as I ask for strength, as I sit with my mom, sister, and grandmother on the right side of the aisle on Sundays, as we eat brunch afterwards. When I feel God’s presence, I know that my Granddad is here with me too. …

EDITH BAÑOS:

… That day, my mom helped me make the impossible possible. She helped me get over the fear of judgment and helped me gain confidence in every stride I took with my hand in hers. When I think about that day, I think about how God works in a similar way. He isn’t waiting on the other side watching me fear the evil of the world, he is at my side, running through every obstacle with me. He was by my side as I transitioned from elementary school to middle school, and from middle school to high school. God gave us free will, and with that free will, you can choose to take him by the hand and let his word guide you through light and darkness, or you can choose not to. But despite what choice you make, God remains by your side.

HILLIS KOPECKY:

… Two years had passed since my father’s cancer treatment started, and it was finally coming to an end. That in and of itself was amazing, and I was grateful that we were closing that chapter for good. What really stuck with me though were the comments.

Family friends, even my father’s doctors said that he had made a miraculous recovery. That he had regained his strength and liveliness much faster than is normally expected after chemo and radiation. And I couldn’t help but feel that this was one of those blessings. For two years I had said the same prayer, every night. There I stood hearing his recovery described as a “miracle”, something that shouldn’t have happened the way it did.

All I ask is that you go out and look for God in the little things in life, and have faith that he wants you to be happy in this world. …

KATE MCDONOUGH:

… This Mother’s Day, I wanted to share with you guys this story of love in hopes that it might inspire you to show love to someone else. It does not have to be your baby, or your lover, or your friend. It could be anyone. Because it does not take having a great mother to know what love is, and it does not take having a child to know how to give it.

If you are looking for love today, remember that Jesus will always be there to give it to you. And that’s who we all need. Someone who cares about us deeply. …

THIRD MONDAY FACILITATED LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ

Monday, May 20

7 p.m., Labyrinth and Child Hall

Please join us for a contemplative Third Monday of May. We’ll begin on the Outdoor Labyrinth (in front of the Lanier House), weather permitting, for an hour of walking the sacred labyrinth path starting at 7 p.m. Or come a few minutes early for a brief introduction if you are new to the labyrinth. If the weather is not amenable, the indoor labyrinth will be in Child Hall. Then, come to Mikell Chapel at 8 p.m. for Taizé Prayers for Peace. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music, silence, and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday.

The facilitated Labyrinth walk and Taizé service take place every 3rd Monday at the Cathedral. Carlisle Dent coordinates our Labyrinth ministry, while Barbara Bazzel and Sandra Carey coordinate the Taizé services. Come to one, or both – and bring a friend! Questions? Reading Genesis: The Beginning of Wisdom

10:10 a.m., Child Hall

Since the nineteenth century, biblical scholars have become largely uninterested in the wisdom offered by the book of Genesis. They tend to focus on the fact that the book is a collection of separate documents that were written by different people at different times for different reasons and devote themselves to answering questions about whether and how these various pieces fit together. This approach means that they avoid the larger questions about life like, “What is the meaning of life?” and “How it should be lived?”

This series focuses on what the book of Genesis has to say about these larger questions. They are as important to us today as they were when they were first asked! We need the wisdom of Genesis as we work through issues facing us now about family and private life, community and politics, and our relation to nature and the earth. You will not be disappointed! As it turns out, Genesis doesn’t tell us stories about what happened as much as it tells us stories about what always happens.

The Rev. Canon George Maxwell leads the discussion based on Leon R. Kass’ book titled The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis (Univ. of Chicago Press, 2023). You don’t need to buy or read the book to participate in the series.

Living Faith

10:10 a.m., Room 239

Join Canons Lauren Holder, Julia Mitchener, and Cathy Zappa for conversation guided by The NY Times bestseller Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic and What We Can Do About It by Jennifer Breheny Wallace. While this book will be of particular interest to those with young people in their lives, it is also relevant to anyone wanting to reflect on the deeper meaning and purpose of human existence and on what Christianity may have to offer a culture in which so many question their self-worth. All are welcome!

Young Professionals Formation Hour: Episcopal 101

10:10 a.m., Room 368

Please join the Rev. Salmoon Bashir for Episcopal 101: An introductory class on Episcopal beliefs and practices. This class is designed for those who are new to The Episcopal Church, as well as cradle Episcopalians interested in deepening their understanding of our traditions, liturgy, theology, beliefs, and practices. These classes are meant to be an open forum for questions and conversations. No advance preparation is required. We look forward to embarking on this journey of discovery and faith together. All are welcome.

Enjoy Biblical Greek!

1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom

Open to beginners, this class includes long-term members who translate using grammar aids, lexicons and commentaries, enjoying how the Greek text reveals nuance and depth in scripture. First-time visitors can drop-in and need no previous knowledge of Greek. Newcomer classes begin with alphabet and pronunciation practice prior to translation. For more information, contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, or 404-365-1093.

PASTORAL CARE

CHANGED, NOT ENDED

Sunday, June 9

1–4 p.m., Lanier House

Join your fellow parishioners from 1 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, for “Changed, Not Ended,” an afternoon of delving into the beautiful Episcopal liturgy for the Burial of the Dead and to begin considering your own funeral. This spiritual practice is about living as much as it is about death: contemplating death in light of faith helps recenter us in life. With leadership from Canon Cathy Zappa and members of the Funeral Guild, we will explore the theological foundations of this service, engage in small-group conversation, and experience an instructed liturgy. As a community, we will support each other in this deep and important reflection, with the knowledge that life is “changed, not ended” when death occurs.

Please direct questions and/or your desire to attend to Canon Cathy Zappa at czappa@cathedralATL.org. Participation is free and open to adults of all ages.
