TO BE A PILGRIM

It will be no revelation to people who know me well that I try to view life as pilgrimage.

I believe one’s trek – in life and faith (as well as in music-making) – should be dynamic rather than static. In each season of our journey as we travel on, the state of awareness, understanding, and empathy in which we find ourselves – next year, or next month, or even as soon as tomorrow – should seldom be the same place where we began.

For many of us, the Cathedral of St. Philip plays an important role in that pilgrimage. We come together week by week to study, to listen, to contemplate, to pray, and to find inspiration for our journeys. And – when we are engage with one another with grace and hospitality, as the embodiment of the Body of Christ in this place – we welcome others, wherever they are in their respective journeys. By encouraging one another in those moments, we leave inspired and strengthened for the steps in our paths ahead.

The Cathedral Choir will soon embark on a pilgrimage to serve as choir-in-residence for a week each in two of England’s most awe-inspiring cathedrals. We will offer fifteen choral services (with only Thursdays off) at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London (July 15-21) and York Minster (July 22-28)… sites on which prayers and praises have been offered to God almost daily since the 7th century! While any encounter with glorious architecture or art can be profound, singing “in residence” is a very different experience from simply visiting one of these magnificent edifices as a tourist. Singing in residence joins us with the continuum of priests, musicians, and laity through the ages who – since pre-Christian times in the Temple – have taken time out of each day to hone their God-given gifts to “praise God with all your skill” (Psalm 47:7). In York, our voices will bounce off stones that have reflected the praises of God since the 12th century… indeed, off stones laid upon foundations that resounded with such praises as much as 500 years earlier.

Whether or not we travel or intentionally set aside time for the purpose of making pilgrimage, I believe we have an opportunity “to be a pilgrim” (see hymn 565!) every day. I suspect “pilgrimage” has more to do with intent than activity. Do we expect to encounter the image of God in others somehow, somewhere, every day? Do we anticipate and actively look for some revelation of the Divine each time we come to worship? Do we consciously “seek and serve Christ in all persons” we meet — as we promise to do every time we renew our Baptismal covenant? One of the many things I personally find so life-giving about the branch of Christianity called The Episcopal Church is that we can recommit, “we will, with God’s help,” and also know that we are beloved by God, “marked as Christ’s own, forever…” even when we fall short of Christlikeness.

The Cathedral Choir and I are deeply, deeply grateful for the incredibly generous support of friends and parishioners who have helped make our England pilgrimage possible. At the 11:15 a.m. service this Sunday, July 7, here at home, we will offer the choral setting of the Eucharist and two anthems that we will sing at St. Paul’s Cathedral (London) and York Minster this month. I encourage you to come, to delight with us in such “beauty of holiness.” What we most ask of you now, though, is your prayers: for safety in travel, for good health, and that we—and all who hear—may be so acutely attuned that we catch a glimpse of heaven as we “sing and make music to the Lord” every day.

THIS SUNDAY: CHORAL EUCHARIST PILGRIMAGE PREVIEW

At the 11:15 a.m. service this Sunday, July 7, the full Cathedral Choir will offer a Choral Eucharist employing music they will sing during Sunday morning services on July 21 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and on July 28 at York Minster. The choral settings of the Gloria in excelsis, Sanctus & Benedictus, and Agnus Dei will be from David Briggs’ inspiring Truro Eucharist. Anthems to be sung in England by American composers – Thomas Dorsey Precious Lord and Dan Locklair Lord Jesus, think on me – will also be offered, along with hymns for the Fourth of July weekend, giving thanks for the blessings of freedom we enjoy in the United States. This will be a wonderful opportunity to experience a glimpse of the glorious music the Cathedral Choir will offer during the fifteen choral services it will sing on its England pilgrimage!

THE CATHEDRAL EXPANDS ITS COMMITMENT TO LOW-INCOME ELDERLY

HOUSING

The Cathedral of St. Philip has finalized a deal to lease the Cathedral Towers property to National Church Residences, a nationally-recognized leader in the affordable housing sector. National Church Residences now operates the property, and the continuing staff members have begun their transition as employees of National Church Residences. The new operators have been in regular communication with residents over the past year, in preparation for this transition. The community will now be called Parish Grove.

As noted when the transition was first announced last summer, the Cathedral is entering into this partnership for two exciting reasons. First, National Church Residences brings expertise and experience necessary to continue the tradition of care that the community has enjoyed and the ability to perform the renovations that the facility requires. This ensures that the facility will be dedicated to the mission of low-income senior housing for at least the next 99 years.

Second, the Cathedral will be able to expand its mission to low-income senior housing in Atlanta. The Cathedral has created a special fund, called the Cathedral Towers Fund, that is dedicated to improving access to and the affordability of housing and the provision of support services for low-income seniors. The fund will also continue to support the Cathedral’s mission of providing services to residents of Parish Grove. Indeed, the Cathedral expects to have a continuing active relationship with Parish Grove as part of its partnership with National Church Residences – as evidenced by the increased ministry of St. Anne’s Guild, lay chaplains from the Cathedral, and resident Bible studies led by Canon Julia Mitchener. All social services currently offered to residents will remain in place.

We give thanks to God for the creativity and dedication of all who are involved in the Cathedral Towers transition. For more information, contact Canon George Maxwell, gmaxwell@cathedralATL.org.

Join us in Child Hall at 10:10 a.m. each Sunday morning in July to hear a presentation by or about one of our many Cathedral Outreach partners. Our relationships with these partners help us to reach out in love to others, build community, “seek the welfare of the city” (Jeremiah 29:7), and engage in the ministry of reconciliation and restoration with some of our most vulnerable neighbors.

This Sunday, July 7, our speaker will be Catrina D. McAfee, Executive Director of LaAmistad, an organization whose mission is to prepare Latino students and families for success through academic and life enrichment programs. The Cathedral hosts a LaAmistad afterschool tutoring program for students from Garden Hills Elementary School Monday–Thursday throughout the academic year.

We are delighted to announce that Chase Loomer has accepted the Cathedral’s call to serve as our next full-time Organist and Associate Choirmaster. Originally from Charlotte NC, Chase comes to us from Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis, where he has been Associate Director of Music and held very significant responsibilities for service playing and oversight of its long-revered chorister program. This spring he worked alongside Bruce Neswick, who served a stint as interim director of music, commuting from San Diego. Chase holds organ performance degrees from the Eastman School of Music (B.Mus., studio of David Higgs); Yale University (M.Mus., studio of Martin Jean), and is pursuing a Doctor of Music degree at Indiana University (studio of Christopher Young). As a high school student, he studied organ with Patrick Scott. Since then, Chase has been a semifinalist and prizewinner in numerous national organ competitions, among them first prize winner in the Atlanta chapter of the American Guild of Organist’s 2018 Taylor Organ Competition. He has performed at national and regional conventions of the AGO, at the annual festival of the American Liszt Society, and has been featured on the radio broadcast Pipedreams on several occasions. An avid improviser, Chase has studied with Jeffrey Brillhart, Jeffrey Smith, Edoardo Bellotti, Thierry Escaich, and Robert Nicholls. He has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Yale Philharmonic Orchestra, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, and Bloomington Bach Society; served on the collaborative piano staff at Butler University; and freelanced as a jazz pianist. He is a composer of choral, keyboard, and jazz music, and his work has been performed by the choirs of Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis, the Yale University Church, and various jazz ensembles throughout the northeast. We look forward to welcoming Chase to the Cathedral community, beginning August 5!
