Are there several ways to abbreviate Maine? Or is it just me.
We go to Maine in July.
For the last fifteen years or so, I have served an Episcopal summer chapel called the Church of All Saints by-the-Sea for two weeks during July. All Saints is located on the beautiful island of Southport in the Boothbay, Maine region. We rent a little cottage for the month and, over the years, have developed a pattern for our time there.
We always make a pilgrimage to the L.L. Bean Flagship Campus in Freeport at the beginning of the month and invariably spend several nights on an offshore island in the Gulf of Maine around the middle of the month.

Robert goes to sailing camp every weekday morning and plays kickball on Wednesday nights. I have a coffee shop that I like to visit and a local wharf where they serve seafood that is perfect for lunch after church on Sunday. Mary Hunter has her favorite roadside stand for “fresh from trap to table” lobster rolls (on toasted gluten free buns no less) and a shop that serves old-fashioned, hard ice cream. And, of course, we have our church friendships that we take time to renew each year.
This year, I noticed something that I hadn’t really paid attention to before. We laughed … a lot. I have a particular memory that makes me smile every time I turn to it. We were in the car coming back from a geocaching adventure (or maybe it was an ice cream run). I don’t remember what triggered it. I just remember the burst of laughter. Robert said something. I responded. Mary Hunter joined in. And, then we were all laughing uncontrollably.
The poet, Maya Angelou, once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
What strikes me about my memory of this moment is how full of joy I felt.
I don’t remember any defensiveness. I don’t remember any effort to control the outcome. I don’t remember anyone winning or losing in the exchange.
I do remember taking delight in the moment. I do remember giving myself over to it. I do remember being filled with a sense of gratitude when it was over.
I realize that the pattern of our time in Maine generates ideal conditions for a joy-filled moment like my memory. I wonder, though, what it might be like to intentionally create more space for such a moment in my day-to-day life now that I’m back home in Atlanta. After all, the joy I remember is not just a fleeting feeling. It’s a consequence of drawing closer to God. The closer we come to God, the more we can hear and feel God’s laughter.
I also wonder what it might be like for us all to intentionally create more space for similar moments of joy, humor, and laughter. As James Martin notes in his book, Between Heaven and Mirth (2011), joy, humor and laughter are at the heart of the spiritual life. Good humor fosters sacred community. And, as Martin notes, joy is not something that is simply “found.” It is an outgrowth of vocation, service, and love.
What would it be like if when people asked us about our time together at the Cathedral, our answer started with “We laughed!”

Old Fashioned Sunday School
Sundays, Child Hall, 10:10 a.m.
The fall election season promises to be a trying time for all of us, regardless of political disposition. The heightened energy of the campaigns causes us to feel like we need to have opinions on things we don’t really understand, to argue until the person in front of us concedes that we’re right, and to stop seeing those who don’t. The result is pervasive disconnection. Elizabeth Oldfield, the host of the Sacred podcast and former director and now senior fellow of the think tank Theos, offers a way for us to stay connected. In her new book, Fully Alive: Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times, Oldfield explores how religion helps us to develop deep principles and values that help us grow in empathy and curiosity for people different from ourselves. Canon Maxwell will lead a discussion that looks more deeply at Oldfield’s insights and explore how they might play out in our lives. Copies of the book may be purchased in the Cathedral Bookstore. Living Faith

Join us as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and one another. Young Professionals Formation Hour

Our Young Professionals group meets on Sunday mornings during the formation hour. We gather to explore our Episcopal traditions and discuss various relevant, faith-based and spirituality related topics. All young adults in their twenties and thirties are welcome to join the conversations. No advance preparation is required. Enjoy Biblical Greek!
Sundays, Room 239 and on Zoom, 1:15 p.m.
This newcomer-friendly class is open to beginners, while including long-term members who enjoy exchanging tips, best learning practices, and coaching points on how to translate the Greek New Testament. The goal is enhanced Bible study, not language mastery.
Cost-free, online resources are provided, in addition to traditional grammar aids, lexicons and commentaries, that yield immense satisfaction in discovering how the Greek text reveals nuance and depth in scripture.
Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Classes typically begin with reciting the alphabet, pronunciation practice, and accessible grammar instruction prior to a half-hour or so of collaborative, rewarding translation.

Play Parents

Beginning Sunday, September 8th, Godly Play Parents (GPP) is a new Christian Formation class supporting parents of children in any of the Godly Play classes. Join fellow Godly Play parents and Deacon Linda Rosengren weekly for fellowship and conversation as we explore how we might engage in the stories and lessons of the Bible alongside our children. COFFEE AND CONVERSATIONS

Come enjoy fellowship, coffee and conversations with members of our LGBTQ+ parish community and allies! All God's Children, the Cathedral's community of LGBTQ+ members, families and friends, exists to welcome all people into the body of Christ, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Cathedral of St. Philip, the Diocese of Atlanta, and the Episcopal Church are welcoming faith communities, affirming that all people - including our LGBTQ+ parishioners - are made in the image of God. Interested persons, who want to participate with All God's Children, are not required to identify as an LGBTQ+ individual. The only conditional requirement is a loving heart. SIGN UP TO JOIN A FOYERS GROUP
The Cathedral Foyers offers small group dinner opportunities for adults. Members of each group take turns hosting/providing food for get-togethers throughout the session. This is a great way to get to know a handful of people without feeling overwhelmed. Groups are intentionally intergenerational and eclectic. The Super Foyers dinner – where all groups convene to kick off the fall/winter session – will be Sunday, September 15 at 6 p.m. in Child Hall. OUTREACH

WORSHIPPING WITH CHURCH OF THE COMMON GROUND
Sunday, August 25, 11 a.m., Meet in the Cathedral Kitchen
Join one of the Cathedral’s two CCG teams as we worship with our friends at Church of the Common Ground on Sunday, August 25. There are several ways to get involved:
1. Help assemble sack lunches in the Cathedral kitchen from 11a.m.–12 p.m.
2. Bake homemade cookies for 80 individuals prior to August 25 and deliver them to the Cathedral kitchen.
3. Meet in the Atrium at 12:15 on August 25 and carpool with us to worship, pass out lunches, and enjoy fellowship in Woodruff Park.

LAAMISTAD FALL VOLUNTEERS
Do you have a special interest or ability you might be willing to share with students in LaAmistad, the afterschool tutoring program hosted at the Cathedral September–May? This could be knitting, storytelling, arts and crafts, music, food preparation and nutrition, gardening, yoga, even juggling! We are looking for adults willing to commit a few hours a month with these delightful and eager learners from Garden Hills Elementary School. The program is fully staffed; you would simply be sharing your time and talents. Please contact the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org, to volunteer!

FARMERS MARKET
... AND ONE FOR YOUR NEIGHBOR
The Cathedral Farmers Market takes place every Saturday through December 14 in the Cathedral parking lot from 8:30 a.m. – noon. This parochial entity of the Cathedral provides fresh fruits and vegetables from local and sustainable farms, prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, and a variety of other goods created, curated, and crafted by local small businesses.

In addition, the farmers market offers a place for community and outreach for the Cathedral. You can leave a prayer request, learn more about happenings at the Cathedral, and provide food for our community partner Intown Cares by dropping off canned and shelf-stable goods at the market’s information tent or participating in the “One for Your Neighbor” program. Just look for the “One for Your Neighbor” signs at the farmers’ stalls to purchase fresh produce for the Intown’s food pantry which is delivered each Saturday after market. SPIRITUALITY
THIRD MONDAY FACILITATED LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ
Monday, August 19
7 p.m., Labyrinth and Child Hall
Refresh your soul with a contemplative Third Monday of August. We’ll begin in Child Hall for an hour of walking the sacred labyrinth path starting at 7 p.m. Or come a few minutes early for a brief introduction if you are new to the labyrinth.
Then, come to Mikell Chapel at 8 p.m. for Taizé Prayers for Peace. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music, silence, and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday.
