The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · October 20, 2024

WELCOME, THE REV. DAVID BOYD!

The Cathedral of St. Philip is calling a new priest: the Rev. David E. Boyd III!

David will begin his ministry with us as the Canon for Pastoral Care.

David comes to us from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rome, Georgia, where he served as Associate Rector for the past three years. In addition to preaching, teaching, providing pastoral care, and performing the other functions you would expect of a good and faithful parish priest, David also served as a leader of the Canterbury Student Ministry — the Episcopal and Lutheran fellowship of Berry College, Shorter University, and Georgia Highlands College.

A native Atlantan and graduate of The Westminster Schools, David was raised in the United Methodist Church, joining the Episcopal Church during his senior year of high school. He studied Religion and Art History at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

On the first day of college orientation, he met his future wife, Sarah, with whom he studied abroad in Spain and France. After graduating in 2017, David served for one year in the Episcopal Service Corps in Atlanta, working in the food pantry at Emmaus House. During that time, David was active here at the Cathedral of St. Philip, and in fact began his official path towards ordination. Several members of the Cathedral parish served as his “Parish Commission on Ministry,” helping to shepherd him through the discernment process. And, by way of the Cathedral Chapter, this Cathedral parish sponsored David for ordination. Hence, David moved on from the Episcopal Service Corps to attend seminary at the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, where he now serves as Trustee.

David was ordained to the transitional diaconate in December 2020 and, following seminary, was ordained to the priesthood in June 2021.

Sarah and David will move into the Deanery on the Cathedral property with their two bichons, Teddy and Pearl. Sarah is an elementary school teacher. David is active in Scouting, acting as a Unit Commissioner for several troops and packs. He loves the Dawgs and the Braves and tolerates his wife’s Kentucky Wildcats during basketball season. David spends his free time reading, entertaining friends, and honing his bridge game.

David’s first Sunday at the Cathedral will be on November 3, All Saints’ Sunday. Please join us in welcoming David, and Sarah, to the Cathedral of St. Philip!

WE ARE ACCEPTING CANDIDATES FOR NOMINATION TO THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER

The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2025 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates.

As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards.

Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture. Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities.

After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December.

The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community.

Members of the committee include: Rod Bunn, Sally Burge, Sara Chapman, Tucker Mahoney, Melody Palmore, Ted Park, Coby Nixon, and Mike Martin. The Dean serves ex-officio.

Names of recommendations should be submitted along with a brief supporting statement to any Nominating Committee member or to the Office of the Dean, 404-365-1031, or jmahood@cathedralATL.org.

The 36th Annual

Homeless r equiem

We Will Remember Friday, November 1

The Cathedral of St. Philip has a long tradition of outreach, discipleship, and caring for others in our Atlanta community — particularly those in need. The Homeless Requiem is a service in memory of individuals who have died in Atlanta in the past year while unhoused.

PLEASE JOIN US IN FELLOWSHIP AND SUPPORT AT OUR 36TH ANNUAL HOMELESS REQUIEM ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1.

To support the Homeless Requiem, please consider:

Volunteering. There are many volunteering opportunities available in the days and weeks before the Requiem and a variety of roles on the day of the event itself.

Donating new or gently used hats, coats, jackets, sweatpants, gloves, and scarves for Emma’s Closet, a clothing closet that respects the dignity of choice for our guests. Donations are accepted on Sunday mornings in the Atrium through this Sunday, October 20.

Purchasing items from our Amazon wish list to donate to our guests to make them a little more comfortable this winter.

Stopping by the Youth Bake Sale in the Atrium for treats that taste good and will help us to do good. Cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and more will be available on Sunday mornings throughout the fall. All proceeds will be used to buy warm coats for our neighbors attending the Homeless Requiem.

Making a donation to help fund this event and year-round Cathedral ministries that support our unhoused neighbors.

Scan the QR codes to donate and volunteer or visit cathedralATL.org/homelessrequiem to learn more. For questions, please contact the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org.

JOHN PHILIP NEWELL’S BOOK LAUNCH

Thursday, October 24

7 p.m., Child Hall and Livestreaming

John Philip Newell is a Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being. His newest book, The Great Search, forges a new path toward a true spiritual home, embracing a deep connection to the natural world.

The story of Adam and Eve’s fall from innocence in the Garden of Eden is a mythical account of humanity’s broken relationship with the divine, with Earth, and with themselves.

In contrast, Celtic wisdom is built on a strong bond with Earth. In the prophetic figures that Newell draws from, the Garden of Eden represents the inner garden of our souls and the outer garden of Earth, which are seen as essentially one. To live in relation to what is deepest in us is to live in relation to the ground from which we and all things have come. Where are we today, in relation to our true selves and the sacredness of Earth? And how are we to find our way home again?

This life-affirming, nourishing book contemplates these questions at a moment of great spiritual awakening, an era characterized by religious exile on a vast scale. We need a new sense of home spiritually, deeply rooted within ourselves and in our shared journey with each other and Earth.

Register at cathedralATL.org/newell. The link for the livestream will be sent via email after registering. Contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org, or 404-365-1031 for questions or more information.
