The CATHEDRAL TIMES

The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · October 27, 2024

The Cathedral of St. Philip has a long tradition of outreach, discipleship, and caring for others in our Atlanta community — particularly those in need. The Homeless Requiem is a service in memory of individuals who have died in Atlanta in the past year while unhoused. The Rev. Ashley Carr of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church will be the preacher, and the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral, will preside.

PLEASE JOIN US IN FELLOWSHIP AND SUPPORT AT OUR 36TH ANNUAL HOMELESS REQUIEM ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1.

CHORAL PRELUDE BEGINS AT 6:15 P.M. IN THE NAVE REQUIEM SERVICE BEGINS AT 7 P.M.

To support the Homeless Requiem, please consider:

Volunteering. There are many volunteering opportunities available in the days and weeks before the Requiem and a variety of roles on the day of the event itself. Please also consider joining us in the ministry of presence by attending the choral prelude and Requiem service to honor those whose lives were lost.

Making a donation to help fund this event and year-round Cathedral ministries that support our unhoused neighbors.

Purchasing items from our Amazon wish list to donate to our guests to make them a little more comfortable this winter. Please make sure the items are addressed to the Cathedral and will arrive by Thursday, October 31 at the latest.

Stopping by the Youth Bake Sale in the Atrium for treats that taste good and will help us to do good. Cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and more will be available one more time this Sunday, October 27. All proceeds will be used to buy warm coats for our neighbors attending the Homeless Requiem.

WE ARE ACCEPTING CANDIDATES FOR NOMINATION TO THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER

The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2025 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates.

As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards.

Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture. Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities.

After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December.

The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community.

Members of the committee include: Rod Bunn, Sally Burge, Sara Chapman, Tucker Mahoney, Melody Palmore, Ted Park, Coby Nixon, and Mike Martin. The Dean serves ex-officio.

Names of recommendations should be submitted along with a brief supporting statement to any Nominating Committee member or to the Office of the Dean, 404-365-1031, or jmahood@cathedralATL.org.

GOOD FAITH CHAPEL

GOOD FAITH CHAPEL: AN INVITATION

As you have hopefully seen and heard, the Cathedral of St. Philip is moving forward with the construction of a new medium-sized worship and prayer space on campus. This new Good Faith Chapel is years in the making and we are excited about next steps. With almost two years of planning and design, more than twenty introductory events, and $27,000,000 quietly pledged, construction will start soon. In the meantime, please look out for a letter from the Dean and an invitation to participate, financially and in prayer. To learn more about this expanded opportunity for prayer and contemplation, worship and education, invitation, and mission on the Cathedral campus, please visit: cathedralATL.org/goodfaithchapel. If you have questions about the Chapel or the campaign, please contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or drocchio@cathedralATL.org.

Choral Eucharist

for All Faithful Departed

At this service we will remember by name those members, family, and friends who have died in the past year.

Sunday, November 3, 2024 4 p.m.

On All Saints’ Sunday, November 3 at 4:00 p.m., the Cathedral will offer a Choral Requiem Eucharist in remembrance of members and friends of the Cathedral who have died during the past year. The image-rich and comforting texts of the Requiem mass – the ancient Christian burial service – will be prayed this year using the music of Requiem by Dan Locklair sung by the Cathedral Choir and accompanied by a string orchestra and organ. Whether you attend to mourn, to accompany those who are mourning, or simply to contemplate the mystery of heaven, we hope you will be comforted, inspired, and strengthened by it. This service will be livestreamed at cathedralATL.org/worship but will not be subsequently available, so join us at 4 p.m. on All Saints’ Sunday.

STEWARDSHIP

CHARITABLE DESIGNATIONS

NATIONAL ESTATE PLANNING AWARENESS WEEK

October 21-27 is National Estate Planning Awareness Week. This is a wonderful time to think about how best to take care of ourselves, our loved ones, and our cherished charities. Estate plans provide legal direction to your loved ones regarding your financial affairs and medical care, should you become incapacitated, and they can help to defuse possible conflicts among family and friends. They can also help you support your church! We hope that every member of the Cathedral has an estate plan, and that estate plan includes a way to remember the Cathedral. Members who have included the Cathedral in their estate plans are eligible for inclusion in the Arbor Society of the Cathedral of St. Philip. Please contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or drocchio@cathedralATL.org to learn more about the Arbor Society, planned giving opportunities, and/or estate planning referrals.

UNITED THANK OFFERING: WANT YOUR OWN BLUE BOX?

Most people who grew up in the Episcopal Church remember putting coins in a little blue box for church. It’s one of those things that tie us together, regardless of which Episcopal church we grew up in. Many of us don’t connect that little blue box to the United Thank Offering (UTO) the Cathedral of St. Philip celebrates each year. Or we think UTO is just for children. In fact, UTO is a season of giving and gratitude for all of us that we celebrate with Episcopalians worldwide to raise money to support struggling and impacted communities.

We invite you to approach United Thank Offering with fresh eyes this year. Step into a daily practice of intentional gratitude in November, reflect on your blessings, and make a thank offering online at cathedralATL.org/UTO or in church on UTO Sunday, November 17. Want your own blue box? Visit cathedralATL.org/UTObox.

UNITED THANK OFFERING BLUE BOX PRAYER:

Almighty God, I give you praise for blessing me in many ways. Create in me a grateful heart and with this gift a blessing start. Amen.
