WELCOME, THE REV. ASHLEY CARR!
By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral
The Cathedral of St. Philip is calling another new priest: the Rev. Ashley Carr!
Ashley will begin her ministry with us as the Canon for Parish Life, which includes oversight of a broad array of ministries including children, youth, young adults, families, and membership.
Ashley comes to the Cathedral from Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, a congregation in the Diocese of Atlanta that serves adults living with mental illness and in poverty. As the Vicar of Holy Comforter, Ashley worked to embrace the marginalized and privileged alike with love and joy. She quickly realized that while Holy Comforter’s context is unique, the work is the same—love God and love one another. Ashley also serves as interim middle school chaplain at the Lovett School, leading chapel services and guiding students at a critical time of their formation. Prior to her time at Holy Comforter and Lovett, Ashley worked in a variety of parishes across the diocese.

As a native of Sewanee, Tennessee, a graduate of the University of the South, and the daughter of an Episcopal priest, Ashley is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Episcopal Church. After studying at Candler School of Theology, she was ordained to the priesthood in 2015. Whether it’s working with children, young families, or grandparents, Ashley has a deep passion for connecting people under the umbrella of their shared faith. And, whether she’s in the pulpit or at the bedside, at the dinner table or in the classroom, her engaging personality and genuine care for those around her is palpable.
Ashley’s wife, Megan, and two children, Mary Stuart (4) and Shepherd (18 months) will join her at the Cathedral. Megan is a 7th grade science teacher in Decatur. The Carrs live in East Lake with their mutt and three-legged border collie. Ashley is an avid rock climber and, as she puts it, “a mediocre cook.” She and Megan enjoy good restaurants around the city and going to see live music. With the family, they can be found outside, building pillow forts, and camping in their vintage Scamp camper.
Ashley’s first Sunday at the Cathedral will be December 8, the Second Sunday of Advent. But even before that, Ashley will be our preacher at the 36th Annual Homeless Requiem this Friday, November 1. Please join us in welcoming Ashley, Megan, Mary Stuart, and Shepherd to the Cathedral of St. Philip!

UNITED THANK OFFERING: SMALL STEPS THAT CHANGE THE WORLD
Even the smallest acts of gratitude and giving create a meaningful impact on your own life and on the struggling communities that United Thank Offering (UTO) supports. The first United Thank Offering totaled $2,188.64 and was used to build a church in Anvik, Alaska and to send a woman missionary to Japan.
Since its official founding in 1889, UTO has awarded 5,448 grants for a total of $144,238,763. Learn more about the amazing impact our small steps are making in the world at unitedthankoffering.com.
This fall, we come together on UTO Intake Sunday, November 17 with Episcopalians around the world to give and give thanks as one community. It doesn’t matter how small or large, the act of gratitude and giving as a community is the gift of UTO. Consider giving via the QR code on the right, online at cathedralATL.org/UTO or in church on UTO Sunday, November 17. Want your own blue box? Register at cathedralATL.org/utobox.

Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. (Matthew 25:34-35)

HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS
If you have ever been a part of the Habitat Christmas basket delivery efforts, you know the wonder of the experience. Whether you donate items for the basket contents, participate in assembling the baskets—which are really boxes—the night before delivery, or participate in the fellowship of delivery, you will surely feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. The whole effort is simply joyful.
This ministry is a combination of effort from all over the Cathedral. Please register at cathedralATL.org/habitatbaskets and consider how your home can help us wish the 27 families for whom we have built homes in the past a wonderful holiday season again this year. They love these boxes, and we love the opportunity to remind them that they are always in our hearts.
To volunteer, please visit cathedralATL.org/habitatbaskets. Please contact the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org with any questions.
Thank you so much for your help!

No previous mental health experience required, and the training is open to anyone over age 16.
The cost is $125 for Cathedral members or $150 for non-members. Cost includes training materials and lunch for both days. Please register at cathedralATL.org/ASIST by Monday, November 11. Participants need to attend both full days consecutively to earn certification. Continuing Education credits (CEUs) are also available for certain professions.

The auction is open Friday, November 1 through 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 10. You can also buy a raffle ticket to win a reserved parking space for the 2025 season!

These items are offered at the farmers market table at Intown Cares, allowing their guests to have the dignity of choice and provides fresh, nutritious, farmers market quality produce. For more information, to donate an item, or to register for the auction, scan the QR code to the left or visit onecau.se/prfm.
THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3
Old Fashioned Sunday School
10:10 a.m., Child Hall
Adult EDUCATION
This election season has been a trying time for all of us, regardless of political disposition. The heightened energy of the campaigns causes us to feel like we need to have opinions on things we don’t really understand, to argue until the person in front of us concedes that we’re right, and to stop seeing those who don’t. The result is pervasive disconnection.
Elizabeth Oldfield, the host of the Sacred podcast and former director and now senior fellow of the think tank Theos, offers a way for us to stay connected. In her new book, Fully Alive: Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times, Oldfield explores how religion helps us to develop deep principles and values that help us grow in empathy and curiosity for people different from ourselves. Canon Maxwell leads a discussion that looks more deeply at Oldfield’s insights and explore how they might play out in our lives. Copies of the book may be purchased in the Cathedral Bookstore. For questions, please contact the Rev. Canon George Maxwell, gmaxwell@cathedralATL.org.
Living Faith
10:10 a.m., Room 239
Join us as we learn what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most importantly, one another. We are discussing David Brooks’s bestselling book How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. Intended for anyone seeking deeper a connection with others and yearning to be understood, this title draws from the worlds of religion, education, theater, neuroscience, psychology, and more. Bill Gates has described it as a guide to “a more humane way of living. It’s a must read for anyone looking to deepen their relationships and broaden their perspectives.” For more information, please contact Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org.
Faith & Fellowship: A Young Professionals’ Journey in the Episcopal Church 10:10 a.m., Room 368

All are welcome! No advance preparation required. For more information about this class, please contact the Rev. Salmoon Bashir, sbashir@cathedralATL.org.
Godly Play Parents (GPP)

Godly Play Parents (GPP) is a new Christian Formation class supporting parents of children in any of the Godly Play classes. Join fellow Godly Play parents and Deacon Linda Rosengren weekly for fellowship and conversation as we explore how we might engage in the stories and lessons of the Bible alongside our children. Enjoy Biblical Greek!
1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom
This newcomer-friendly class is open to beginners, while including long-term members who enjoy exchanging tips, best learning practices, and coaching points on how to translate the Greek New Testament. The goal is enhanced Bible study, not language mastery.
Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Classes typically begin with reciting the alphabet, pronunciation practice, and accessible grammar instruction prior to a half-hour or so of collaborative, rewarding translation.
This class meets Sunday afternoons from 1:15-2:45 p.m., inperson in Room 239, and also via Zoom. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.

Choral Eucharist
for All Faithful Departed
At this service we will remember by name those members, family, and friends who have died in the past year.

Sunday, November 3, 2024 4 p.m.
This Sunday, November 3 at 4 p.m., the Cathedral will offer a Choral Requiem Eucharist in remembrance of members and friends of the Cathedral who have died during the past year. The image-rich and comforting texts of the Requiem mass—the ancient Christian burial service—will be prayed this year using the music of Requiem by Dan Locklair sung by the Cathedral Choir and accompanied by a string orchestra and organ. Whether you attend to mourn, to accompany those who are mourning, or simply to contemplate the mystery of heaven, we hope you will be comforted, inspired, and strengthened by it. This service will be livestreamed at cathedralATL.org/worship but will not be subsequently available, so join us at 4 p.m. this Sunday.
