GROUNDBREAKING AND WITNESS AT THE CATHEDRAL THIS SUNDAY!
By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral
Grace to you, and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord! When we gather at church this Sunday, many of us will be considering the outcome of election day, November 5, 2024. I am writing this article, however, on November 4, 2024, without knowing what November 5 will bring.
Whatever November 5, 2024 brings, we will gather on November 10, 2024, for an incredible and important witness. We will gather to break ground for The Good Faith Chapel, a new chapel of prayer at the Cathedral of St. Philip. Our witness is this: whatever the rest of the United States does after November 5, 2024, the Cathedral of St. Philip will be breaking ground for prayer.
We will be breaking ground for a new form of common prayer, a prayer which encourages hearing each other and seeing each other, and a prayer which is open to the sky, open to the fullness of a truly transcendent God.
Please join us for prayer this Sunday! Please join us to break ground for The Good Faith Chapel!

GOOD FAITH CHAPEL GROUNDBREAKING
Sunday, November 10 – 10:00 a.m.
• Gather with us at the future site of the Good Faith Chapel—the current Andrews Drive playground—at 10:00 a.m. this Sunday, November 10!
• The groundbreaking will include a grand procession around the site of the Good Faith Chapel, as well as prayer and joyful singing.
• We will dig at the center of the octagonal Good Faith Chapel, together marking the beginning of construction of this new space in our House of Prayer for All People.
• All are invited to break ground with us! We will have shovels for grown-ups, and shovels for children – along with treats for all.

UNITED THANK OFFERING: JULIA CHESTER EMERY CHANGED THE WORLD
Julia Chester Emery isn’t a household name, but maybe she should be, at least in Episcopal homes. Her deliberate acts of giving started with the small act of putting coins in a box whenever she felt grateful which she then gave to people in need. She expanded that practice to a circle of friends, and it grew through the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) to become a worldwide practice of gratitude and giving.
This November, we invite you to step into Julia’s shoes to give thanks and give back. It doesn’t matter how small or large, the act of gratitude and giving as a community is the gift of UTO. Consider giving via the QR code, online at cathedralATL.org/UTO or in church next Sunday, November 17.
UNITED THANK OFFERING PRAYER CIRCA 1889
O Lord, without whom our labour is but loss, and with whom Thy little ones go forth as the mighty; We humbly beseech Thee to prosper all works in Thy Church undertaken according to Thy holy will, especially the work of the Woman’s Auxiliary and its United Offering; and grant to Thy labourers a pure intention, patient faith, sufficient success upon earth, and the blessedness of serving Thee in Heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Take a grand tour of dance from across Europe with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. Let your ears delight in the tuneful melodies while the infectious rhythms permeate your soul. Featuring music from France, Germany, Spain, and England, this program leads us on an exploration of dance as it would have been experienced in the town square, the opera house and the concert hall. You will be up and dancing in the aisles before this concert is over!

OUTREACH

HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS
If you have ever been a part of the Habitat Christmas basket delivery efforts, you know the wonder of the experience. Whether you donate items for the basket contents, participate in assembling the baskets—which are really boxes—the night before delivery, or participate in the fellowship of delivery, you will surely feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. The whole effort is simply joyful.
This ministry is a combination of effort from all over the Cathedral. Please register at cathedralATL.org/habitatbaskets and consider how your home can help us wish the 27 families for whom we have built homes in the past a wonderful holiday season again this year. They love these boxes, and we love the opportunity to remind them that they are always in our hearts.
To volunteer, please visit cathedralATL.org/habitatbaskets. Please contact the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org with any questions.
Thank you so much for your help!

PASTORAL Care

APPLIED SUICIDE INTERVENTION SKILLS TRAINING
Friday and Saturday, November 15-16
8 a.m.–5 p.m., Lanier House
Whether at work, at home, with friends or teammates, or in more formal helping roles, many of us have been, or will be, called upon to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental-health crisis or considering suicide. Join us for a two-day workshop in one of the world’s leading suicide-intervention models, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST teaches individuals to provide a skilled intervention to a person who may be having thoughts of suicide and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep them safe and alive. No previous mental health experience required, and the training is open to anyone over age 16.
The cost is $125 for Cathedral members or $150 for non-members. Cost includes training materials and lunch for both days. Please register at cathedralATL.org/ASIST by Monday, November 11. Participants need to attend both full days consecutively to earn certification. Continuing Education credits (CEUs) are also available for certain professions.
THE MINISTRY OF EUCHARISTIC VISITS
Help us stay connected with one another by becoming a Eucharistic Visitor or receiving Eucharistic Visits!
Eucharistic Visitors (known informally as EVs) are parishioners who take the consecrated sacrament from our Sunday morning Eucharists to individuals who cannot currently attend services in person. These trained lay ministers carry with them not only the Body of Christ but also Christ’s Body, the Church. They take with them our prayers for one another and our bonds that transcend space and time.
This is an incredibly meaningful ministry for everyone involved.
Why might someone become a Eucharistic Visitor? This is an important and very meaningful ministry, not only for those being visited but also for the visitors. Eucharistic Visitors find that this ministry helps them put their faith into practice, develop their gifts for pastoral ministry, and deepen their own faith.
Why might someone request a visit from an EV? Certainly some recipients of this ministry have been homebound for a long period. Others, though, might appreciate a visit from an EV because:
• They have a newborn or infant in their household and are sticking close to home for a while.
• They are staying in because they (or others in their household) are immunocompromised and need to avoid large gatherings.
• They have limited mobility for a while due to surgery, injury, or recent illness.
If you would like to learn more about becoming an Eucharistic Visitor or about receiving visits, please contact Hillary Jones, hjones@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1038.

The Cathedral Farmers Market improves the quality of life for customers by providing fresh and nutritious food directly from farmers and producers in the region. The market takes place in the Cathedral parking lot Saturday mornings from March through December from 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m.

GRATITUDE

At the Homeless Requiem on Friday November 1, we remembered each person who died in Atlanta while unhoused this year. We also invited our unhoused neighbors to the Cathedral for dinner and services from local ministries and organizations. Thank you to all who participated, donated, and volunteered, especially our preacher the Rev. Ashley Carr. For more information about our ongoing ministries for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, please contact the Rev. Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org.
