2008-2021 STEPHANIE MENARD ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
Through the following selection I wanted to show this diversity of projects but also my will to conceive simple architectures that are legible in their volume and uses. I believe in an architecture that encompasses as many parameters as it can in a logical, innovative and generous concept. In this architecture, the construction is a core research in order to achieve the poetry. A building is a set of constructive and technical details that should be precisely solved respecting the project’s identity, the expected atmosphere. Each creation of space is a chance to trigger uncommon interactions between human and his environment, to raise his awareness on body-feelings through construction : load, luminosity, materiality, rhythm. The selection displays this attention of being more conscious about our senses, about our presence in a place. The power of images and memories is a running subject in my endeavour too. Analysing the existent and how it is perceived by inhabitants, collecting pictures that have a strong atmosphere or emotion... All those collections are tools to refer further by analogy. In facts images and visions are made of feelings that can be transferred and interpreted in a new architecture with its volumes, its materiality and its relations to surroundings. 3 /55

DIY HOLIDAY HOUSE
Holidays are an idealistic time to break free, get out of routine. Even if that phaseshift is a fantasy, holidays show a will of living differently. A desire of letting go. Immerse into nature, with a lower degree of comfort supplies : what we want is to spend most of our time outside. Indoor still useful as a shelter to sleep, wash yourself and cook... And even all those activities can be transferred outside. We let more room to unexpected moments and don’t stop an activity because it’s time to lunch. Family times are more often and more relaxed. Everything seems to be suspended. We pay more attention to our body feelings and what we really need : feelings. Sun burns our skin, and our feet’s arch walking on the sand, Waves leaks our ankles, warmer and colder, Lawn tickle our toes injured by the rocks, ... Even our ground attraction changes. We happen to lay down a bit everywhere, no matter if there is a beach chair next to us, we prefer to feel our body weight on the soft sand, lawn... No decoration doctrine in the house, every discovery finds its place. The minimum required only. We already took too much in the car when we were still under the influence of eagerness. Mobility is part of the notion of getting out. This mobility has to continue in the way of living at the holiday house. The tiny unit should adapt to different activities, needs of space and weather. Limits between outside and inside should be blurred. It’s more like a platform that is more or less opened, more or less empty.. 13 /55

LIGET BUDAPEST
The project is designed with a clear will to offer a wide ranging experience of music, both intellectually and emotionally. It opens up the curiosity and the creativity through body experiences of music. The museum is located into the greenery and close to the lake. It has to be really attractive, catching the eye from the pathway, but it also has to be respectful regarding the landscape and the woodland atmosphere. The two major concerns of the project are to create a place that represents music metaphorically and a building that merges with the landscape. The building deals with monumental and human scale at the same time : monumental scale is a way to trigger the awareness of visitors. The particular atmosphere presents in places like churches or libraries creates a really quiet environment where you can focus easily. Inside large walls, little rooms are specific in their volume and covers to create several sound situations. This duality brings a real freedom to visitor who can compose his own journey as if he was composing music. He has both a sense of rhythm and of flow. It’s like playing freely music on a given tempo. Small rooms echo to others like on Paul Klee’s painting Fuge in Rot, 1929. That is a kind of polyphony where visitor takes part in. 17 /55

HOUSE FOR A COUPLE
A 70 years old couple ask the studio to design the extension of the little inherited house. At that present time, they were living in a large home surrounded by matured trees in a wide garden. The new house is located in a corner of a 60’s allotment project. Intimacy and wide landscape overviews are an old story for the couple since they have decided to move. The major concern of the project is to keep the feeling of privacy and fluidity they had before. In order to give more place to day-rooms, night-rooms are removed from the existing house into the extension. The passage in between works as a threshold that preserves intimacy of bedrooms. Each entity is then design as an open plateau where all rooms are linked together: hinged doors are all-height and all-width so that floor and ceiling are not interrupted when opened. The long shape closes the inner garden. That allows to open widely on the greenery as if it was a patio. The raw look made of black wood panels and concrete structure contrasts radically with the existing classical white house. 23 /55

BELVÉDÈRE
Belvedere is a piece of a tourist route of the regional winery landscape. The strong identity of Chateau-Thébault is linked to its bedrock that grasps geological, historic and winery particularities. Belvedere anchors on that laden bedrock and jump into the air to re-discover the landscape. It counterpoises on rock so that it levitates over clouds and river flow. That’s a transition between the dramatic feature of the pedestal and the softness of the air. Visitor starts his route from the closed place of the church and town-hall, and discovers progressively the panorama on the valley. Once he arrives at the back-place of the town-hall, two ways of contemplation are offered : he can rests at the rostrum, having a framed view of the front cliff, or, he has a wideopened and vertiginous view walking on the belvedere. The structure creates the frame for the rostrum, spaces are linked to each other. The looping form offer a continuous route to gaze at the landscape in movement. It differs from traditional diving-like platforms but offers the feeling of emptiness as well. The lower platform is designed as a meeting point for groups listening to a guide. Little events like reading tales could even take place there, taking advantage of the remarkable natural scenery. 27 /55

2016-2017 Construction Rennes, FRANCE Within CHOUZENOUX ARCHITECTURE Work in pairs on conception and drawings
120 APARTMENTS
The whole project is composed of 2 entities : 120 apartments and a senior residence. It is located at the junction of 3 areas that each have a particular atmosphere. Individual houses face the south side of the project. A park with old trees follows the east limit whereas parking and offices occupy the north-east corner. The master plan was designed in collaboration with urban city planners. The challenge was to keep the sense of a garden while constructing a dense residential complex. A pedestrian route crosses the site from west to east in order to open new access on the park and separates the site in two programmatic sets. The senior residence takes place on the south part of the mail. Apartments are gathered in 4 blocks on the north part. The ground plan follow a north-south direction : two bands separated by a planted and flooded garden. That organization allows a two-directional permeability. Each apartment building is a series of plateaus with spinning balconies so that each room accesses to a large exterior space, enjoying surrounded greenery. The last storey stops the series. It takes the all-width of the other plateaus and is designed as rooftop houses. 35 /55

JELMOLI
Since its opening in 1899, as the first department store on Zurich’s famous Bahnhofstrasse, Jelmoli remains to this day the preeminent fashion house of the city. The entrance space and cosmetic department has gone through several transformations during the last century. It is defined by a forest of structural columns and ad-hock display areas. HILDEBRAND was asked to rethink their beauty department on the ground floor. We emphasized the quality of feeling inside a forest and created a «beauty landscape» with vertical green elements to help people navigate through the building. Columns, now trees, support counters which are shaped by movement of the visitor who finds himself immersed in a vivid scenery of discovery.
