From Germany with Love Neon Light tackles tough customers in Grade III turf test BY KATIE BO WILLIAMS German immigrant Neon Light strolled back to Graham Motion’s barn after an excursion on a muddy Saratoga track Sunday, looking perfectly Lake George at home. Rotating Stakes Preview her ears like satellite dishes, she was alert – but the picture of leisure. She followed Motion’s unraced colt, Syzygy, back to the barn on a loose rein, nodding her head. You would never have known it was her second day in the backside hurly-burly – and only her fourth day in a strange country. The Motion crew attests emphatically that this was not the case on her first day, when she dragged her rider around the track, fussed and hollered for home, and generally pitched a fit. The lean bay filly shipped to the United States from Germany Wednesday, spent two days locked away in quarantine and must have thought she had emerged in an See Lake George page 6

Accustomed to living on a private, quiet 20horse training facility and doing her job in the correct right-handed direction, Neon Light saw the commotion of the backside as adequate reason to indulge in well-deserved hysteria. Spattered with mud, a little sweaty, but breathing evenly and stepping heedlessly through puddles, Neon Light had clearly decided all that fuss wasn’t worth the effort. She had put in a relaxed, workmanlike gallop, and now the daughter of Refuse To Bend sauntered back to the barn with a casual swagger that spoke more to her chances in today’s Grade II Lake George than her page in today’s program. A Group III winner at Baden-Baden, Neon Light finished a fast-closing third after being boxed in during the Group II German 1000 Guineas in her most recent start. Edgar Prado will take the reins in what is only her third lifetime start. Trained by German-based Andreas Wohler, who sent out Lauro to finish second to Presious Passion in the Grade I United Nations last summer, Neon Light will remain in Motion’s care following the Lake George. Strike It Rich and Bay To Bay top the Lake George field, but they are by no means the only possible candidates in the extremely competitive 15th running of the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes. The race has attracted a full field, including three entries on the also-eligible list. Strike It Rich enters on a three-

Trials, training, triumph Lewis wins, gives up plans to train at Del Mar to work for Schettine BY KAREN M. JOHNSON A month ago if you asked Lisa Lewis what she would be doing with her summer the trainer would have told you she was looking forward to the Del Mar meet and running some promising 2-year-olds at the seaside track. There was, however, an abrupt, yet welcomed, change of plans in store for Lewis. She recently left California and returned to New York, which had been her home for more than a dozen years, to become William Schettine’s private trainer. “Not more than a month ago Mr. Schettine called me and asked if I would be interested in the position. He wanted it to be done quickly. You could definitely say the move happened on the fast track,” Lewis said. So it is fitting that Lewis, 41, won with her first starter for Schettine on the fourth day of the Saratoga meet. Show Trial, running in a $10,000 claimer, won

the opener on Monday, returning $12.40. The 3-yearold colt was claimed, but Lewis still has plenty to keep her busy with 23 Schettine-owned horses in her care. “Whew,” Lewis said the day after the win. “Winning right away definitely takes a little bit of the pressure off. It was a good feeling and hopefully a sign of good things to come.” Until now, 2010 has been a tough one for Lewis who lost the older star of her stable, the stakes-winning grass horse Black Astor. The 6-year-old underwent a myectomy, a routine throat surgery in June. When he awoke from the anesthetic, he injured his pelvis and had to be euthanized. Aside from that terrible blow, business was also sluggish in the Lewis stable. Before her win with Show Trial, she had saddled 21 horses in 2010 without a winner. “This year was not going in the right direction,” Lewis said. “When I got the call from Mr. Schettine, who I had trained some horses for way back, I thought it would be a good fit for me. Most people know that I am patient with my horses; I put the horse first. Mr. Schettine owns stallions and mares and he doesn’t care about what happens next week because he has the whole family. He’s looking at the long run.”

Schettine, who operates an energy business, became involved in racing in 1998 when he purchased the Rubiano mare Felicita, in foal to Dehere, for $42,000 at Keeneland. Felicita was carrying Take Charge Lady, whom Schettine sold as a yearling. Take Charge Lady would go on to earn more than $2 million and was a multiple grade I winner. In 2003, Schettine opened Signature Stallions in Ocala, Fla. Among the studs standing there are Chapel Royal and Shakespeare. The latter was co-owned by Schettine and Dell Ridge Farm during his racing campaign. A multiple graded stakes winner, Shakespeare entered the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Turf undefeated but suffered his first and only loss in that race when he injured a tendon. Shakespeare returned to the races in 2007 and won the Woodbine Mile, his final career start. Lewis, a native of Maryland, also brings a solid racing resume to her burgeoning partnership with Schettine. Her early education in the business came from her parents, Jim and Penny, both trainers. She apprenticed under Hall of Famer Jack Van Berg and is the goddaughter of another Hall of Famer, Buddy Delp who conditioned Spectacular Bid. Lewis, who dropped out of high school when she was 16, began training in 1989. Two years later she saddled her first graded winner, American Royale, in the Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga.

She spent the last three years on the Southern California circuit and said there is nothing like training horses at Santa Anita in the backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains. She got her first taste of California in 1999 when she had the promising 3-year-old Capsized in her care. The Summer Squall colt finished third in the San Rafael at Santa Anita before a sixth-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby. Later Capsized developed into an accomplished turf runner with Lewis saddling him to victories in the Fourstardave at Sara-

toga and the Steinlen at Arlington Park in 2002. You can’t stamp the soft-spoken Lewis. Her successes have come with horses of all ages and on all surfaces and that well-roundedness will serve her well in her new position. “It’s a good mix of horses in the barn,” Lewis said. “There are homebreds, claimers, older and younger horses. I’m very excited about the babies. I love babies because I like feeling responsible for my horses, and teaching them the right way. There are about

eight young horses, including a Rock Hard Ten filly, a Tiznow filly, and a Freud filly.” With only one person to report to, a private training job is a departure from operating a public stable. For Lewis, spending more time in the barn and less time on the phone is something she won’t have a problem getting used to. “Mr. Schettine told me, ‘I want you to spend all the time with the horses,’” Lewis said with a big smile. “What a Godsend to hear after 20 years in the business.”

Giant Heart Schosberg veteran digs deep, wins New York-bred battle royal by joe clancy

When Giant Moon finished eighth, 25 lengths behind Le Grand Cru, in the Grade III Westchester April 30 at Belmont Park, trainer Rick Schosberg kicked himself. Hard. “I should have been given days for that,” said the trainer. “I entered him in a race I never should have. Off a layoff, a fresh horse, in the Westchester, where you know the pace is going to be hot, you know he’s going to be anxious and you know he’s going to get exhausted. It was stupid.” To be fair, Schosberg tried to find allowance races for the 5-year-old New York-bred, but they didn’t fill. Off nearly a year, Giant Moon won two stakes in 2009 and needed to get started. “We had a 7-furlong race for him, it didn’t go, we had a mile race for him, it didn’t go,” the trainer said. “We were getting desperate and that’s when you make mistakes. And you don’t do something that dumb to a horse this good.” Giant Moon didn’t mind. He bounced out of the defeat with a win and a second in state-bred optional claimers and

headed for Saratoga in peak form. Al Fried’s homebred son of Giant’s Causeway led a contentious field of seven in Monday’s $70,000 Evan Shipman – and won a war. Pushed wide on the final turn, Giant Moon (Edgar Prado) scored by a neck over Icabad Crane with Groomedforvictory a head back in third in the 1 1/8-mile test for New York-breds. Schosberg beamed afterward. “He forgave us for what we did to him,” he said. “He’s come back with three huge efforts and that’s class. He could have given us the finger, gone the other way, but he didn’t. What a neat horse. He’s so game, so tough.” He needed to be. Mighty Morris broke first and led Ruffino through the first turn. Millionaire Naughty New Yorker bulled toward the front down the backside, increasing the tempo and shuffling the pack. Giant Moon parked outside in mid-pack while Icabad Crane dropped back to last. On the turn, Giant Moon stayed outside while Icabad Crane and Groomedforvictory drafted in behind the leaders at the quarter pole. The latter pair made

similar moves at the top of the stretch, with Icabad Crane charging through a narrow gap to take a brief lead. Icabad Crane surged, Groomedforvictory fought back, but neither could match Giant Moon’s momentum in the final yards. The final time was 1:49.31. “The plan was to break and lay third right behind the leaders,” said Prado. “He got outrun and I had one horse inside of me in my spot. I was fourth outside, then I saw Naughty New Yorker

going up there and that pushed me even more wide. Plan A wasn’t working. Back in N.Y., Lewis gets early season win by mike kane

As comebacks go, trainer Lisa Lewis hit one out of Saratoga Race Course Monday. Lewis won the opener on a beautiful sunny day with Show Trial, the first horse she saddled in New York since returning from a nearly four-year stint in California earlier this month. Show Trial, who was claimed out of the race, caught Moon Nistle in deep stretch and won by a neck. Lewis was the first of three female trainers to win races Monday. After spending the first 17 years of her career on the East Coast, primarily in New York, Lewis relocated to Southern California late in the 2006 season. She gave up her public stable and came back to New York to accept a job as a private trainer for William Schettine. Show Trial was coming into the race off a victory and Lewis smiled at a question about what she had done in her 10 days with the Schettine horses to get the Purge colt ready to win again “I can’t take a lot of credit because I haven’t had

him that long,” she said. “We just tried to put him in the right spot and keep him as good as he was last time.” Lewis spent the past three summers at Del Mar and had not personally saddled a horse at Saratoga since 2006. However, she did have two winners in the 2007 meet, including Missinglisalewis, who were saddled by her mother . I think we get along good; we have the same idea with horses. We

just want to build. This is hopefully the beginning of a long-term thing. He’s got broodmares and some really nice stallions on his place. We just want to develop that.” Lewis said she trained a couple of horses for Schettine earlier in her career. “It was way back, and we’ve stayed in touch a little bit,” she said. “I’ve always respected him and we have the same idea on horses as far as taking care of them and getting their best efforts because he has the mothers and the brothers. It looked to me like the second choice (Electra’s Ego) was compromised at the start. That certainly helps because that was the other speed horse in the race. My filly broke perfectly and that was it.” It was the first victory of the Saratoga season for Rice, who won the training title in 2009. “I’ve had quite a few in,” she said. “We’ve run three horses so far and we’ve got a first, a second and third. I think I’ve had four scratches off the turf, so we’ve scratched more than we’ve run due to the weather. I’m just glad to get the first one out of the way.”

Lewis said she will handle the Schettine horses he has running in his name and in partnerships. “We have 24 here,” she said. “We’re kind of rebuilding. We have to clean up the stable a little and get the right horses in there. I think in the long term it will be a good thing.” Rajiv Maragh rode the winner in the opener and completed the double with Primed To Be Ready, giving him four winners through the first four days of the meeting. “It’s just the way the ball bounces,” he said. “It’s great for me to win two today. It’s tough to win two races on any day on any card at Saratoga, so it’s a pleasure for me to win two.” • It’s fair to say that David Greenhouse and Chris Boehning, partners in Blue Bison Stable, topped Lewis and Maragh on the happiness meter when Mystic Fever won the fourth. The longtime friends from the Albany suburb of Latham grew up attending the races at Saratoga and won with their very first starter at the historic track. They have owned Mystic Fever for a couple of weeks. “This is a 35-year-old dream,” Greenhouse said. Greenhouse and Boehning have been friends since the eighth grade and attended Shaker High School together – Shaker’s mascot is the Blue Bison, which may be unique – and have four horses in their stable. The best of the group is Shine Upon, a 3-year-old filly trained by Jimmy Jerkens, who will run in the Fleet Indian Stakes on Friday. Trainer Carl Domino also trains for Blue Bison and arranged the private sale of Mystic Fever from the late George Steinbrenner’s Kinsman Stable. Domino has trained Kinsman horses for several years. Greenhouse flew in from Denver for Mystic Fever’s debut in the Blue Bison colors and Boehning decided he ought to make the trip from his home in New York City. “I thought ‘I can’t have my first horse

Domino took over the training of the 3-year-old gelding from Bill Mott this year and ran him six times before he broke his maiden under Ramon Dominguez. Domino nodded toward Dominguez, who has been the dominant rider in New York since moving his tack from the Mid-Atlantic region a couple of years ago. “I’m lucky with him,” Domino said. “I think we’re about 31 percent. Sometimes together you do well. I don’t know if you get superstitious or what, but he’s a nice horse and everything worked out well.” • While Mystic Fever came from off the pace to get his win, Queen Of The Creek took the fifth, a 1-mile allowance/ optional claimer on the turf by leading every step. The 3-year-old Theatrical filly looked like a wild horse after opening a 7 1/2-length lead through the first half-mile, but she had enough left to hold off Firey Red by a half-length under Julien Leparoux. Trainer Tom Proctor wasn’t sure if

it was his first Saratoga victory, but he was sure he had made the right call with how to handle the filly, who doesn’t like to be rated. “A few times it hadn’t worked, so we thought we’d let her free run and see what happens,” he said, chuckling. Proctor’s instructions to Leparoux were to go along for the ride. “I told him to let her rock. Don’t try to rate her,” he said. “It hadn’t worked.” Queen Of The Creek rolled and gave Proctor and her owners, Timothy Turney and Nathan Tinkler a Saratoga victory. “I thought she’d either run real good or really bad,” Proctor said. • The Preferred Pals Stable, based in Glens Falls, knows its way to the Saratoga winner’s circle and made another trip for photos after the sixth. Bernie’s Pal, trained by Linda Rice, was sent off as the favorite in the New York-bred maiden race moved from the turf to the dirt and won comfortably by 2 1/4 lengths. “Frankly, she had done well in her last three starts with three seconds in a row,” Rice said. “Whether it be dirt or turf, she appears to be about

• Owner-trainer Diane Balsamo followed with a victory in the seventh with Honorable Truth. She claimed the 6-year-old mare in her last start and sent her out for another win. “That’s what you’re supposed to do,” Balsamo said. “That’s the game plan.” Balsamo operates a three-horse stable based at Aqueduct and shipped in for the score. • Starlight Stable’s talented but unpredictable 4-year-old colt Checklist wired the field in the eighth, finishing the 6 furlongs of the allowance/optional claimer in 1:08.79 under John Velazquez. It was the Gone West colt’s fourth win in 11 career starts and improved his career record to 4-1-4. “It seems that on any given day that he can put in a scorcher,” said Don Lucarelli of Starlight. But Lucarelli and his partner, Jack Wolf, said the colt is not a good work horse, which probably has had an impact on his career. “We all knew that he was going to go with the horse and I was surprised that he didn’t have more company up there,” Wolf said. “Especially with a first quarter in 22.19. I thought he’d be going :21 3/5, so I was pretty happy to see that time.” Dominguez closed the proceedings for the first segment of the meet with a win on Lael Stable’s homebred Lamar Valley for trainer Barclay Tagg.

Definitely Maybe Scisney family enjoys ride with 2-year-old by sean clancy Arthellor Scisney had to walk away. “Men aren’t supposed to cry,” Scisney said as he escaped from a reporter on his way to the Saratoga Trustees’ Room. The retiree from Louisville had reason to cry Sunday at Saratoga Race Course. Scisney’s Maybesomaybenot upset the Grade II Sanford, earning the biggest victory of Scisney’s life. Julian Leparoux guided the 2-year-old son of Sunday Break to a 1 1/2-length win over maiden Nacho Saint and Another Silver Oak in the $150,000 stakes. Favorite Bail Out The Cat lost the plot at the start, lunging in the air, crashing into the side of the gate, knocking jockey Alan Garcia from his irons and losing all chance. He wound up sixth. Trained by Mike Maker, Maybesomaybenot finished 6 furlongs in 1:10.97 and paid $21.20 for the win. Racing in the name of Scisney’s wife, Carolyn and daughter-in-law Karen, Maybesomaybenot provided a family thrill.

They had never won a race like this. “Great. Great, man,” Scisney said, before he began to cry. “I’m just a hard-working man, I loved the horses all my life, lucky enough to retire, I had bypass surgery in 2002, but kept the faith and bred three horses since 2000, this was the best one, we sent the other two to the Keeneland sale, but kept this one.” Maybesomaybenot made his debut at Churchill Downs in June, then led every step in his second start before winning by 6 lengths. That prompted Maker

and Scisney to think Saratoga. Maybesomaybenot did the rest. Leparoux knew something was up in the paddock when Maker gave him instructions. The trainer usually tells his first-call jockey little; ride your race. This time, Maker told Leparoux that the bay gelding ran greenly in his first start when he was behind horses. Maybesomaybenot broke well from the inside post and Leparoux made sure he cleared his seven rivals (actually six after Bail Out The Cat’s bungling beginning), opening a length lead on Another Silver Oak and Commonwealth Rush. Chipshot tracked in fourth as second choice Lou Brissie scrambled to keep pace in fifth. After a quarter in 22.21 and a half in 45.65, Maybesomaybenot still held a half-length lead over Another Silver Oak who tried for a furlong to get past but couldn’t. By the furlong pole, Maybesomaybenot had stretched his lead to 2 lengths and only Nacho Saint was making up any ground. By the wire, Maybesomaybenot held a comfortable margin for his second career victory. “I don’t know anything about the horse, Mike just told me that the first time he ran him, he was a little green about the dirt. I knew what I was supposed to do,” Leparoux said. “At the three-eighths pole, I thought he was going pretty easy in front, I was not sure he was going to win, but I thought he would be placed. I did not know what happened to Alan’s horse. He was relaxed, he’s still green, he’s looking around at the wire.” For Scisney, the victory represented a culmination of faith. The small-time breeder entered his horse at Keeneland September last fall, but had qualms about giving him away. He knew the pedigree was weak (two silblings

brought $3,200 and $2,000) but he also knew there was something there. “He was in the last day at the Keeneland Sale and they don’t bring much money, but I knew this was a good horse, something just kept telling me that this was a good horse,” Scisney said. “I put a $22,500 reserve on him and they didn’t bite. They wish they had today. It’s a thrill of my life. I would like

to say this because I’m a good Christian man, if God does nothing else for me, I’ll be all right, all I want to do is thank Him.” Scisney gave 25 percent of Maybesomaybenot to his daughter-in-law Karen who is battling Lupus. She watched the race from the hospital. “To help that girl laying in the hospital bed, she’s be in the hospital eight

times this year,” Scisney said. “I told my wife a couple of months ago, I’m going to give 25 percent to her, just hope I can pick her up. We won at Churchill by 6, we carried her in there, when the horse went across the line, she stood up. My son called me and told me she was up in her bed today. Thank God. It’s a good story.” And then he began to cry.

hen a baseball pitcher has a no-hitter going no one talks to him. However, when a jockey is on a roll everyone lets him know about it. After wining his third consecutive race aboard Desert Key in the fourth on Sunday, Javier Castellano was walking back to the jockey room signing a few autographs and bumping a few fists when he walked past a fan dressed like 1980s wrestling icon Hulk Hogan. “You just cost me $20 brother,” the pseudo-Hulkster told the jockey. Castellano just shrugged his shoulders, offered an apology, and went out and won two more races in a row. “Wow,” Castellano simply said in the winner’s circle after the fifth win came on a skilled ride of first-time starter Stand Proud for his longest priced winner of the day at $27. “These are the kind of days

I am just thankful that I can have days like this with good horses and good people that make it possible for me to win.” Sunday marked the third “five-pack” for Castellano at Saratoga – matching his totals from Sept. 3, 2005 and Sept. 6, 2004. “It is so competitive at Saratoga that when things work out, like they are today, you really appreciate everything,” Castellano said. “You wait for a long time for days like this, so when everything is going the right way you just go with the flow and enjoy it.” Castellano’s first win came on Yawkey Way ($7.60) in the second for trainer Chad Brown. The jockey went on to sweep the rest of the early Pick 4 with Cody Samora ($3.80), Desert Key ($8.80) and Fiddler’s Chaparito ($5.10) before the run with Stand Proud. “He is one of those great jockeys,” said Brown, who also trained Stand Proud. “He follows the directions that you give and makes the horse comfortable. That is exactly what we want.”

Jimmy Jerkens, trainer of Desert Key, also appreciated Castellano’s effort on the day. “There are so many things that have to fall into place to win here. The jockey is a big one of those,” Jerkens said. “There really needs to be the right combination and we had it today.” The day put Castellano at the top of the leaderboard with six victories in the first three days of the meet, but he knows this is only the beginning. “The next thing is to just keep working hard,” he said after signing autographs after the fifth win. “It is so competitive here that the best thing you can do is be consistent, so, that is what I am looking forward to doing.” The next big mount for Castellano comes in today’s featured Lake George aboard Caminadora for trainer Todd Pletcher. The conditioner is hoping that Castellano keeps his hot hand. “When you are in the zone, like he is today, you are confident and making good decisions. It is that way in any sport,” Pletcher said. “We just need him to continue all that in the Lake George.”

Miracle Filly Cody Samora recovers, returns to capture Saratoga allowance by ben meyers

The first time Cody Samora unseated Javier Castellano in the paddock before Sunday’s third race, it seemed like typical pre-race nerves. The second time, at the starting gate, the 9-10 favorite made many of the 18,713 on hand murmur with concern. After she broke on top and won the $42,000 allowance in 1:24.21 for the 7 furlongs, she still needed three spins in the winner’s circle to calm down enough to get her picture taken. Even with all of the fussing the 4-year-old daughter of Mayakovsky made trainer John Morrison believe in miracles. “She has always been high strung,” Morrison said about the pre- and postrace antics, “It is really a minor miracle that she is here though. If you saw her in December there is no way that you would have thought she was the same horse.” The miracle that Morrison refers to started with a tragedy in November. The last time Cody Samora was seen

in a race before Sunday was a maiden score at Belmont Oct. 4. During the night before her second start, the personality that led to Sunday’s win got the horse in trouble. Sometime during the night, Morrison and owners Sue and Gary Lundy aren’t sure exactly what happened, the temperamental horse crashed into something in her stall and hurt her neck. At the time, the trainer and owners were unaware that the filly would have to overcome much more than just the gash on her side. The horse developed Sweeney Disease, or Sweeney Shoulder, a rare condition where the muscles of the neck and shoulder atrophy due to nerve damage. “We weren’t even sure what was happening to her at first,” Morrison said. “She couldn’t even lift her front leg.” After finally getting the diagnosis, Morrison turned to a group of support staff to get the horse rehabilitated and back on the track, but it was a long

journey that included physical therapy and acupuncture treatments. “We couldn’t even get tack on her until March,” Morrison said while giving heaps of praise to the entire staff, including the patience of the owners, which made Sunday’s run possible. “She breezed

“She was wound up coming out of the sale, but now that we have her head OK she is really showing the kind of talent that she has,” winning trainer Chad Brown said about the daughter of Grand Slam. “We had to get her head right, but she has picked it up since we have done that.” • After Cody Samora’s score in the third, Centennial Farm’s Desert Key squeezed between horses in the stretch to get to the wire first in the fourth, a 6-furlong allowance/optional claimer, paying $8.80. Between all of the bumping and jostling, Be Bullish got up for second and Mesa Sunrise finished third. “We were just able to split through even though it was really tight,” Castellano said about the win on the 5-yearold son of E Dubai. “He pulled away once I got him guided through. When the horse gives you what you want when you ask then good things happen.” • The fifth was taken off the turf and run at 5 1/2 furlongs for maidens. Fiddlers Green Stable’s Fiddler’s Chaparito (Castellano) survived a speed duel with Moon Raven in which the pair put early fractions of 21.75 and 45.54 seconds. Trained by George Weaver, Fiddler’s Chaparito paid $5.10 for the effort, while Marsh Haven got up for second and Runaway Jim finished third. • In the sixth, Gary and Mary West’s Stand Proud charged down the stretch to take the lead in the final strides to pay $27 for the win. Trained by Brown, Stand Proud, a 3-year-old Tale Of The Cat gelding, had to be steadied by Cas-

tellano after veering in upper stretch and then snaked his way to the finish with a winning time of 1:10.26. Pawleys Porch was much the best of the rest, while Artie’s Chapter finished third. • Fastus Cactus ($8.10) set a new track record of 1:02.51 in the 5 1/2-furlong seventh, which was taken off of the turf. It was the fourth win in eight career starts for the 4-year-old Cactus Ridge gelding, who represented James Riccio and trainer Rick Dutrow. My Golden Opinion placed second with Subtitles third. • The biggest payout of the day came in the eighth, when Merriefield Farm’s Followmyfootsteps ($29) recovered from a bump at the start, stalked the pace, and edged away for a win in the 1 1/16-mile allowance/optional claimer over the yielding turf in a time of 1:43.18. War Hoot took second and Mikoshi finished out the money runners. Trained by Tom Voss, the winner started 2010 as a steeplechase prospect but lost his jockey in his first start. The 6-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway went back to the flat and came into Sunday’s race off a win and a third at Delaware Park. Campaigned in Ireland as a young horse, he placed fifth in the 2007 Irish Guineas at The Curragh. • Annual Appeal ($12.40) won the 5 1/2-furlong finale that came off the turf in 1:05.11. After a few bumps at the start that left her in last, Calvin Borel took the 3-year-old Successful Appeal filly to the outside where the pair charged down the middle of the track for trainer James Baker and owners Bill Harrigan and Mike Pietrangelo. The winner was claimed by Epona Racing Stable and trainer Bruce Brown. Toy Indian was second and Annie’s Melody third.

They call them “Come-to-Jesus” meetings. In racing, trainers and owners, agents and jockeys have “Come-to-Saratoga” meetings. Is your horse good enough? Is your business strong enough? Is your bank account deep enough? Everybody wants to come to Saratoga. Everybody can’t justify coming to Saratoga. Doc Danner and Frenchman Frederic Lenclud had the meeting. Fresh off a strong stance at Churchill Downs where Lenclud won 29 races to finish sixth in the standings, they had a big decision to make. Go to Ellis Park for the summer. Or go to Saratoga for the summer. Big fish, small pond. Small fish, big pond. Danner said it straight. Go to Ellis, ride every race, win a pile of races. Or go to Saratoga, scratch and claw for every crumb, hopefully meet some clients who will remember your name when it comes time to go to Keeneland in the fall, Gulfstream Park in the winter or somewhere else down the road. Lenclud, 23, never hesitated, agreeing to book the tickets to New York. If it will help his career in the long run, then it’s the right thing to do in the short run. Danner spent the first couple of days shaking hands and introducing Lenclud to the New York trainers and owners. A lot of talk on Danner and Lenclud’s part and very little dialogue from the trainers. On Opening Day, the door opened and stayed open when Lenclud guided Le Mi Geaux to an upset score in the Schuylerville to win his first race at Saratoga. Saturday, there was conversation. “When people don’t know you, you say ‘Hi, how are you’ and they barely talk,” Lenclud said. “Then when you win a good race, any race, they know who you are and they say ‘Congratulations.’ That’s why you always need to show up the next day when you win a race.” Danner and Lenclud have been showing up and taking names. Names of new horses, new business. With four cards in the books, the meet is already a success, which is beginning to become a trend. They won 24 races at Oaklawn Park in the winter, five at Keeneland in the spring before carving a niche at Churchill Downs. “When Doc and I got together, we had a plan, an ambitious plan. We were hoping it would work good enough, go to Keeneland and win a few races and we were expecting a good meet at Churchill. If we’re doing really good there we might as well go to Saratoga. We did really good at Churchill, we felt like let’s go now. Get our name in the big pond and try it.” Nicknamed the Mosquito by his friends, Lenclud was convinced to become a jockey by a counselor at school. He joined the jockey school in Chantilly, working from the ground up: grooming, riding, hotwalking, cleaning. He knew nothing about horses, nothing about being a jockey. long days taught Lenclud about racing. “The counselor said, ‘Why don’t you try to be a jockey, you’re so tiny?’ I said, ‘What is that?’ I looked it up online and found the school in Chantilly and I applied and just went,” Lenclud said. “They could see I had no talent because I did not know how to Tod Marks ride, but they said ‘We like Freddie Lenclud you.’ I stayed there for about four years, when I got to 18, I wanted to travel, in racing you can travel and see a lot of different things.” Lenclud crossed the pond in 2008, first on a holiday visa, then returned for good, picking up a job with Ian Wilkes. When Wilkes went north last summer to Saratoga, Lenclud decided he might as well get his jockey’s license and began riding at Ellis Park. But it was always a stepping stone. “I needed experience so it was good, I rode seven, eight, nine races every day, that’s how you learn but you can’t really stay there if you want to learn more,” Lenclud said. “When you ride at Churchill, Keeneland and here, when you’re around those big riders, you learn so much, you see their techniques, what they do, you learn, you learn to keep your position.” On Tuesday morning, Danner and Lenclud worked the backside. One of the few jockeys on the grounds, Lenclud was busy trying to meet new clients. Asked about why he was out on a dark Tuesday when most jockeys were taking a day off, Lenclud laughed. “Because I am the mosquito.”
