New Angles Three-year-olds square off in Spa turf stakes by mike kane

sychic Income and Turf Melody arrive at the $70,000 Quick Call Stakes this afternoon from different directions. For Psychic Income, the route to the 1-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds has included a series of good performances for trainer Ken McPeek. Most recently, he was second in the Grade III Jefferson Cup at Churchill Downs. McPeek hopes for more of the same from the Toccet colt, who won in claiming company at Keeneland in April, beat older horses in an allowance race at Churchill Downs in May and came back to run well in the Jefferson Cup June 12. Turf Melody comes into the race, which has drawn eight runners, off a two-month layoff that followed a decisive loss in the Grade II Dwyer on dirt. After a long stretch of training, with 10 races in 12 months, trainer Graham Motion figured a timeout was in order for the colt owned by Earl Mack. See new angles page 11

“I gave him a little break,” Motion said. “I thought he needed freshening up. He’d been going pretty hard. I thought he ran a big race in the Gotham and probably should have hit the board. He walked out of the gate. It was probably one of his better races, actually, in hindsight.” Turf Melody finished fourth behind Awesome Act, Yawanna Twist and Nacho Friend in the Gotham. In the Illinois Derby he was fourth, about 14 lengths behind the winner, but a neck from third. The Maria’s Mon colt contested the pace in the Dwyer May 8, but was far behind Fly Down and Drosselmeyer, who reversed their order in the Belmont Stakes. “The Dwyer was really disappointing and I thought he was telling me that he needed a break,” Motion said. “Physically he’s been fine. He hadn’t missed many dances.” Turf Melody got a month off and resumed training with Motion’s older horse, Icabad Crane, a game second to Giant Moon in the Evan Shipman Stakes Monday. The Quick Call, named for a horse who excelled for years at Saratoga, will be Turf Melody’s second try on grass since last October when he ran over yielding ground. Motion said he won’t go today unless the turf is firm. “I ran him at Keeneland. It might have been a little softer that day than normal,” Motion said. “I’m just not sure it was a very fair test. To me, this horse works really well on the (Tapeta surface at Fair Hill Training Center) and most of my (Tapeta) horses handle the grass. I wanted to make sure that I tried him on the grass again. This is a good opportunity to bring him back in kind of a sensible race and get him back on track.”

Turf Melody’s lone grass race came in the Grade III Bourbon midway through the Keeneland fall meet. He had broken his maiden in June and was third in two small stakes on synthetic surfaces when Motion entered him in the Bourbon. He was beaten about 8 lengths and never put in a very serious challenge. “My thinking back then was that I was hoping he would run well enough to run in the Breeders’ Cup,” Motion said. “It didn’t happen.” Turf Melody finished the year on a positive note with an allowance win on dirt at Laurel and a victory in a

$200,000 stakes at Remington Park. “I’ve always thought a lot of this horse, especially after he won that race at Remington,” Motion said. “He’s just been a horse that I have been very high on. I think he’s capable of a little better than he’s shown lately. I hope anyway. “He’s been training super. Pretty much each work he’s done with Icabad Crane. I’m just looking for a good effort. I’d love to see him run a bang-up race. He doesn’t have to win for it to be a good effort.” Psychic Income has gotten on a roll and has only missed the board in six

starts this season when he was bumped at the start Feb. 17 at Gulfstream Park. “He’s a nice horse that we didn’t give a lot for as a yearling,” McPeek said. “A guy from Alabama named Danny Wiggington owns him. He’s a horse that we had high hopes for and then he really didn’t deliever. “We thought he’d be a little bit better 2-year-old and at 3 he has come around. The last couple of starts he took himself to another level and the Jefferson Cup was a great race. If he can improve off of the Jefferson Cup, which we think See new angles page 12

he’s got a chance to in this race, which might be a drop in class.” McPeek said the colt has been training well, but has his work cut out for him starting from an outside position on the tight inner course. Julien Leparoux picks up the mount. He rode Psychic Income in Florida earlier this year. “If he were to run well in this one or win it, we’d come back in the Saranac at the end of the meet,” McPeek said. “That would be logical. He acts like he’ll go a little further than we’ve been running him. It could be timing. It’s going to be tougher. He’s going to need pace, but that’s up to Julien.” Set as the eighth race with a 4:57 p.m.

post time, the Quick Call also attracted Our Douglas (5-2 morning line, Garrett Gomez) for trainer Tom Proctor; Lethal Combination (8-1, Alan Garcia) from Kiaran McLaughlin; Alfarabi (8-1, Rajiv Maragh) from Eoin Harty’s barn; Lighthouse Sound (12-1, Ramon Dominguez) from Mike Trombetta; Jimmy Murphy Stakes winner Beau Choix (3-1, Javier Castellano) from Barclay Tagg; and Lonesome Street (6-1, John Velazquez) for Mike Maker. • Today’s card also includes the $70,000 Lucy Scribner Stakes for fillies and mares going 7 furlongs on the main track. Carded as the third, the race attracted $590,000 earner Unforgotten from Dallas Stewart’s barn, multiple stakes winner Lady Alexander, the 4-for-9 Devil By Design and 2009 Adirondack winner Worstcasescenario among others.

Fout plans to use the bay gelding’s comeback campaign this summer as a springboard for his swan song, a flat race next spring. “I’d like to have him for my daughter to ride in one flat race,” Fout said. “I would like to have him be her first ride.” Sometime before that, Fout would also like to win the Grade I New York Turf Writers Cup. Just as a prep. Fout’s barn favorite, who won the Turf Writers’ in 2008, is a fixture in the Oklahoma Annex. He can usually be found in the stall closest to the tackroom, with owner Peggy Steinman sitting guard in a lawn chair and a few hangers-on loving on him. Even at 9, Dark Equation still sports a sweet, baby face and a predilection for cuddling. There’s no getting around it: Dark Equation, or Darkie, is spoiled rotten. “He’s such a character. He waits for somebody to get to the barn every

morning first thing to turn him out because he gets mad as a snake. He won’t eat any breakfast, pins his ears, gets his lip poked out. You’ve got to turn him out in his paddock the minute you walk in the barn. Man, if you don’t turn him out, he is a miserable sucker,” Fout said in a tone that suggested he would never think of allowing such a catastrophe to occur. Twelve months ago, a stress fracture incurred during the Grade II A.P. Smithwick put Dark Equation’s return to his throne at the Annex in jeopardy. “He finished, but you could tell something was wrong at the bottom turn,” Fout said. “He always spars, he always jumps brilliant, he’s never put a foot wrong. You could tell he was just miserable coming down the backside.” Fout said Steinman was praying they could bring the old campaigner back. A month after the A.P., another set of x-rays revealed the injury to be healing well. Steinman and Fout started thinking about dusting off his tack. The second week of January, Dark Equation stepped back onto Fout’s training track

A Grade I winner at Saratoga in 2008, Dark Equation eyes a return to form in 2010.

in The Plains, Va. The rest of the ride was smooth sailing. “We were perfect the whole way, easy ride, no bumps,” Fout said. “He’s our favorite. We wouldn’t dare taking a chance running him if he wasn’t a 110 percent.” “My goal with him is to win the Turf Writers’. That’s what I’ve been prepping him for since January,” Fout revealed. Dark Equation has made two starts

on the comeback trail, a 1 1/4-mile flat race at Colonial Downs in which he finished fifth and a Grade III over fences at the same course June 11. Dark Equation finished third, a performance that thrilled Fout. “I was tickled to death with him. We knew there was a lot of speed in there. the back, don’t get into the race until the bottom turn. We closed the gap up, he made up a huge amount of ground. He jumped fantastic. And he’s jumping even better now. He’s got a great bounce in him.” Fout targets the Aug. 5 A.P. Smithwick at 2 1/16 miles again as a prep for the 2 3/8-mile Turf Writers Aug. 26. “He likes that longer distance, the A.P. might be a little short for him. If he’s in the first three [in the A. P.] I’ll be tickled to death,” Fout said. Fout hopes the campaign will be Dark Equation’s swan song, preferring not to run horses past their 9-year-old year. “My dream is to get through this year with him and I hope that he finishes up in one piece and I’d like to have him for my daughter,” Fout said. Caroline Fout, a fox hunter and intermediate-level eventer, celebrated her 16th birthday this summer. Fout admitted to some nerves about sending his little girl into the fray of a race, but took comfort in the trustworthiness of his old pal. “The thing about him is you just sit there and steer. He’s just a pushbutton,” Fout said. Fout intends to give Dark Equation one more schooling session and one more piece of serious work in the next week. • In addition to Dark Equation, the Smithwick nominees include Arcadius, Chess Board, Dalucci, Divine Fortune, Dr. Bloomer, Dynantonia, Planets Aligned, Slip Away, The Price Of Love and Your Sum Man.

Bad manners turn into new career for tough jump mare Miss Crown by katie bo williams

saratoga open house

It wasn’t that Miss Crown didn’t want to be a racehorse, it was just permitting herself to be locked into a starting gate was unacceptable. The usual routine exercise became a daily battle at Donna Freyer’s Camden stable. The daughter of High Yield walked in nice as you please every day, but the minute the gates closed behind her, claustrophobia kicked in and it was the Battle of Waterloo. Freyer tried everything anybody could think of: blindfolds, padding, expert advice, and natural horsemanship. She imported Quality Road’s gate therapist, Bob Duncan. “She defeated Bob Duncan,” Freyer said, with a shake of her head. “I’ve never, ever had anything so bad in the gate in my whole life. I don’t think anybody has.” The routine – Freyer, armed with a fresh new tactic, waited until the end of the day when the spectator population was low and led the filly into the gate. Whereupon Miss Crown broke through the front and dragged Freyer’s assistant like a ragdoll halfway down the track. “She has a very, very high tolerance for pain,” Freyer recalled. “She would look like Ben Hur when she came out of the gate, she was that cut up.” Despite her daily explosions that left everyone panting and exhausted, Miss Crown still managed to worm herself into the hearts of the barn. “Everyone loved her,” Freyer marveled. So Freyer called Bernie and Kate Dalton about her problem filly. “You want to try this over jumps, because it’s not happening with a flat career?” she asked. It turned out to be a good call. The filly broke her maiden in her second start

Sunday, July 18 at Aiken Fall Meet in 2008 and has been knocking on the door in the filly and mare stakes division ever since. Knocking, until the second race at the Saratoga Open House when she ran away with a $15,000 claimer, 8 3/4-lengths ahead of Cuse (Carl Rafter) and Eagle Beagle (Paddy Young). Bernie rode, Kate trained. “At some point you have to look at your horse and whether it needs a little class relief or something to get its head in front - you don’t like to dishearten them,” Kate Dalton said. “That was the thinking with Saratoga, we thought we could be a little bit clever and see if a little bit of class relief could help, which obviously it did.” Miss Crown settled in the back of the pack for the first mile and took control coming out of the final turn, a tactic Dalton said was intentional. “She used to run on the front as a 3-year-old and when she came 4 we started trying to ride her a little different,” Dalton said. “It took a little bit of tweaking but she seems to be really settled now, she’s quite happy to sit off the pace and come running.” The tough-minded 5-year-old now occupies a favored position in her new home as well. “It’s basically Bernie’s horse and I feed it,” Dalton laughed. “There are days when she’s a little bit on the tough, fresh side, but all in all, she’s really come around and she’s pretty darn nice to do anything with at this point.” Owned by Erna Reingold Stable, Miss Crown will likely make her next start in a restricted stakes at Monmouth in the fall. • Mark O’Dwyer has worked nearly everywhere there are Thoroughbreds. He broke yearlings in Japan, lived for a year in Australia and spent time in Hong Kong, Italy and England. He spent the last six years in the United States riding flat horses, running a hunter show barn for Howard Wolf in Maryland, and training the odd steeplechase horse. So O’Dwyer knows when he sees a horse he likes. The Irishman liked 5-year-old Grantor, a son of Broken Vow who was struggling on the dirt. O’Dwyer wanted to buy the big bay horse before he made his first start on the turf, but when the horse won, the opportunity closed up. “They ran him in a cheap grass race at Colonial and he won by 7 lengths, and they didn’t want to sell him,” O’Dwyer said. Grantor was unable to maintain his form on the more competitive Laurel oval, however, and O’Dwyer got a second shot at the horse. He jumped on the opportunity to buy the horse for Wolf’s Caves Farm. “I didn’t know he was going to be a jumper,” O’Dwyer admits. “I was just taking a little chance. I liked the way he moved and he had a good attitude. He was just a nice strong individual, well put together. I took a chance. You never quite know if they’re going to make a jumper or not until you put a jump in front of them.” As it transpired, Grantor took to his new career and broke his maiden over fences in his second start. Darren Nagle kept the New York-bred settled behind the runaway pacesetter and drew away after the final fence for a 5-length score over first-time starter Good Request (Xavier Aizpuru) and Steppenwolfer (Jody Petty). “He’s a pretty versatile horse. He can do whatever, come from behind, or even make the running.

Quiet Approval leads Wantan over the last in the allowance hurdle at the Open House.

We’re learning more about him every time he runs,” O’Dwyer said. “The first couple of times that we ran him, we just wanted to give him a good experience and we dropped him out to the back of the field, and he loves coming from behind, he loves attacking horses.” The competitive bay gelding came out of the race with a swagger to the walk that first attracted O’Dwyer. “He was beaming with confidence,” Dwyer said, beaming with a little pride himself. “He knew he did good. He loves his job.” O’Dwyer knows he hasn’t gotten to the bottom of Grantor. He intends to return the gelding to action August 12 in an allowance jump race at the Spa. He is optimistic about the horse’s chances. “With every race, he keeps getting better and better,” O’Dwyer said. “Hopefully he’ll keep on getting better and better.”

• Kathy McKenna made a bold statement after Quiet Approval’s 8-length victory at Open House. “He’s probably the nicest horse I’ve ever trained,” the trainer said. “I think he might be.” You might classify Quiet Approval as a prodigy, an assessment McKenna would agree with. Though the 4-year-old began his career running a mile and a sixteenth on the all-weather at Woodbine, he has won two out of four starts over fences since beginning his new career for McKenna and Move Up Stable. He finished worse than second only once, in a $25,000 optional claimer at Philadelphia Park when being used up near the lead. “I’ve been blessed to have some good horses in my life and he’s just so young and so smart that it seems like he’s figured it out pretty quickly,” McKenna said. “[The Philadelphia race] was the first time See open house page 21

he had run over jumps at the flat track. He was confused, he thought he was at the flat track and thought he had to run on the flat. He was sure that he had to run as fast as he could for a flat mile. The horse is the quietest horse, but at Philadelphia Park, his tail was up and he was like, ‘I’m back at the flat track, I have to run as fast as I can for a mile, I know this gig.’ ” At Saratoga, McKenna told jockey Carl Rafter to be sure the intelligent gelding understood that he had to relax. “He dropped him right in and he travelled second and he just had a loop in his reins and the horse just settled,” McKenna said. “Then he was able to just roll on there at the end.” McKenna continues to have high hopes for the lanky son of Quiet American, aiming him at another race at Sara-

toga in August. “I feel grateful,” she said. “He’s just so smart.” • Parker’s Project, according to Jonathan Sheppard’s assistant/first call jockey Danielle Hodsdon, is “completely goofy”. The 4-year-old Sheppard homebred, called “Parker” around the barn, didn’t goof around at Open House, running wire-to-wire in the second division of the maiden, cruising to a 1 1/2-length win over Straight To It (Aizpuru) and Salinja (Petty). “He’s very, very immature,” Hodsdon said. “He’s naughty at the start. At Middleburg, I had to have two ponies to get him to the paddock. He tries to lie down – he just gets really excited.” Owned by Hudson River Farm, the bay gelding demonstrated that he’s perfectly capable of focusing during a race

and Hodsdon took advantage of this ability, keeping him carefully in check on the front end and asking him for a driving finish at the wire. “Once he’s in a race, he’s great. Once you can get him to the start and away from the drop of the flag, then he’s fine,” Hodsdon said. “He was in front at Open House because there was no pace and I just wanted to get him going because he’s kind of a galloper. You can put him anywhere, he can be in front, he can be last.” Parker’s Project began his career on the flat as a 3-year-old, but after four races and no wins it became clear that the son of Parker’s Storm Cat might be better suited over fences. He finished fourth in his previous start, a maiden race at Penn National in which he raced toward the back of the pack for the majority of the race and had trouble getting through late.

Bop’s Back

Boucher horse returns to jumps, runs away with Ferguson Stakes by Joe clancy

colonial downs

Back in March, Lilith Boucher rattled off the plan for stakes-winning steeplechaser Class Bopper. “Run a few times on the flat, maybe take a shot and run him long on the grass at Keeneland . . . no really. Then freshen him up and try to win the Zeke Ferguson at Colonial Downs.” Fast forward to July and Boucher looks like a prophet. She did indeed try Class Bopper on the flat – three starts including one at Keeneland – and went to the $50,000 Ferguson July 11 off a six-week layoff. In his first jump start since November, the 5-year-old blitzed seven rivals – galloping off by 10 lengths at the finish. The winner took an immediate lead, widened it and won easily in 4:05.58 for the 2 1/4 miles. Dr. Bloomer held second with Dark Equation third. Defending race winner and pre-race favorite Slip Away scratched. Trained by Boucher and ridden by her husband for owner Rodman Moorhead, Class Bopper rewarded his connections’ patience. “I said all spring we were going to do it and it happened,” said Lilith after-

Sunday, July 11 ward. “It doesn’t always work that way. More like never. Are you kidding?” Boucher made a plan, stuck to it, and might suddenly have one of the top few young steeplechasers in training. Class Bopper the flat horse opened 2010 with a fifth behind Winchester in a Keeneland allowance, moved to Pimlico where a mile was too short (and he finished fourth) in May and then tested Colonial’s turf with a fifth in optionalclaiming company. “He had a legitimate excuse each time, but you could be real confident in his form,” said Lilith. “I sent him back to Camden (S.C.) and gave him three weeks off. We pulled his shoes and did nothing with him.” The vacation obviously helped. Class Bopper the steeplechase horse went back to light work and pointed for Ferguson Day via a final workout at Springdale Training Center. Boucher wanted something to make her horse gain confidence and nearly chose a flat race on the same day. She opted for the steeplechase,

however, and got a bonus when Slip Away scratched – though Class Bopper would have been difficult for anyone to handle. Richard Boucher simply enjoyed the ride at Colonial. “No one has really challenged him,” said the jockey. “Maybe they think they’ll go get him after a mile but he keeps going. He just loves it. His ears are pricked and he’s remarkable. I’m still smiling, still getting goosebumps.” Class Bopper raced for his breeder, longtime Boucher client Mede Cahaba Stable and Stud through most of last year. The chestnut won a maiden hurdle as a 3-year-old in 2008 and won

twice on the flat and once over jumps in 2009. Moorhead, another longtime Boucher client, bought the son of Bop when Mede Cahaba scaled back its racing operation late in 2009. The victory ended a flirtation with the race for the Bouchers. They finished second in 2006 and 2007 with Class Vantage and in 2008 and Class Shadow. “It was nice to do well with Mignon because she was so supportive of us, and it’s nice to win for Rod too,” said Lilith Boucher. “He and his wife are so great and have been very good to us. trying too hard this spring and he helped me realize it and helped me make the right decisions.” • In the opener, owner/trainer Jonathan Sheppard unveilved a 4-year-old Thunder Gulch gelding in Barnstorming, who made light work of eight others in a $15,000 maiden claiming hurdle. Ridden by Danielle Hodsdon, the winner came from far back early to score by 8 1/2 widening lengths over Power Game and Jack Twist. The winner needed 4:13.73 to cover the 2 1/4 miles and improved to 1-for-4 lifetime. The Kentucky-bred finished ninth and third on the flat for trainer Frankie Brothers at Gulfstream Park in 2009, then was sold to Sheppard. He missed more than 16 months with some foot troubles, but hinted at something positive with a fourth in a Colonial maiden claimer on the flat June 21. “He’s matured into a nice horse now that he’s 4 and he had the basics of schooling when he was 3,” said Hodsdon, “so he didn’t run like quite as green of a horse as a first-timer normally would. We like him a little bit. I think he’ll be nice around the hunt meets in the fall. He’s very, very professional and seems to like the jumping game.” Additional reporting by Katie Bo Williams.

His old stall may be filled, but there is no replacing Macho Again in trainer Dallas Stewart’s barn at Saratoga Race Course. The 5-year-old son of Macho Uno is on his way to Haras Gran Derby in Venezuela as a stallion prospect after being retired and sold by owner West Point Thoroughbreds following a pair of offthe-board finishes this year. “It’s kind of weird not having him here,” Stewart said. “We’ve been here with him since he was 2. He was one tough horse. He always fought his way back. Some horses don’t. He got back to the winner’s circle. He got back into top shape. He loved the game.” Macho Again was seventh in the Grade 3 Alysheba and 10th in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster in 2010, his third and fourth consecutive unplaced finishes following a gut-wrenching nose loss to Rachel Alexandra in the 2009 Woodward at Saratoga. He won six of 24 career starts with six seconds and $1,825,767 in purses. “That Woodward was just a nose away from greatness,” Stewart said. “It’s hard to believe that that little nose can make that big a difference, because it would have made a huge impact on a lot of things, I think. It was a great race. He was just a phenomenal racehorse.” Macho Again won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga and was second to Big Brown in the Grade 1 Preakness in 2008, and last year won the Stephen Foster and Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap prior to his Woodward run. “I will be stunned if I ever have another horse as good as him,” said Saratoga Springs resident Roger Locks, one of several West Point partners in Macho Again. “It was the best. We did every-

thing. We went to all the Triple Crown events. We won a Grade 1 at Churchill Downs; I mean, come on. He won the Jim Dandy here. How good can it get?” As tough as he was in competition, Macho Again was equally adventurous off the track. Stewart recalled a pair of incidents where the good-feeling colt got away from his handlers and caused a few anxious moments. “He was always looking to get loose. That’s his personality,” Stewart said. “From Day 1, when he came here, he almost got loose and ran out on Union Avenue with the blinkers on. He was 2. A lady stopped him with her car. He turned around and started jogging back and one of the guys that works in the parking area grabbed him and said, ‘What do you want me to do with him?’ He’d never touched a horse in his life. I thought he was dead. “He got loose at the barn a couple years back. He chased the pony all around here. He had no bridle on, no saddle, nothing. The pony took off running around the barn and Macho’s chasing him. Finally, he ran into a fenced area and we caught him. He never got a scratch on him.” The same couldn’t be said for his 2008 Travers, where Macho Again got bounced around and finished seventh, coming back to the barn with cuts all over his legs. “That was bad,” Stewart said. “It was a case of a horse and jockey trying too hard to make a hole where there was no hole. Somebody came over on him, and there was just nowhere to go. There’s a nerve behind the ankle and he hit that and sliced it, and it was real painful. He was limping all around. I thought he was done. We X-rayed it and he X-rayed good, and the doctor said he’ll be fine and, the next day, he was.”

LAKE GEORGE STAKES RECAP

Family Matters

Perfect Shirl makes like big sister in stakes by sean clancy Sue Lorimer, assistant trainer to Woodbine-based Roger Attfield, walked out of the winner’s circle after Perfect Shirl won the Grade II Lake George Wednesday and was greeted by a sole reporter. The interview stalled at, “She must have come with a reputation?” Lorimer repeated the question. “A reputation?” The questioner had to backtrack and restate the question. “Not reputation, I mean hype and respect, being Lady Shakespeare’s sister and all.” A winner of seven races from 12 starts for nearly $500,000 for Attfield and on her way to a start in the Grade I Beverly D. this summer, Lady Shakespeare makes a tough model to emulate. “They’re both very nice, they’re not necessarily high-strung, but energetic. They like to get out and train, they don’t like messing around,” Lorimer said. “She doesn’t look a lot like her sister yet, but she was

slight as a 2-year-old and 3-year-old, hopefully she’ll get a little bigger like her sister did. They’re a little bit alike and not the same in the same breath.” On Wednesday in Saratoga, they looked cloned. Perfect Shirl cracked open a tough edition of the Lake George which attracted a dozen 3-year-old fillies that had combined to win 29 races. Sent off at 9-1, the Charles Fipke homebred won her third consecutive race and first stakes with a powerful kick that wore down Exclusive Love late. No Explaining closed from 11th to finish third. It was a typical Saratoga turf stakes, the first 10 finishers were separated by 4 lengths. Favorite Strike It Rich, coming off three victories, faded to finish last. Lady Shirl finished the 1

1/6-mile distance in 1:41.28. Attfield keeps things simple. He sent Lorimer on the road from Woodbine to Saratoga with two fillies for the Lake George. They arrived Monday, trained lightly Tuesday and again Wednesday morning. Attfield assigned Lady Shirl to John Velazquez and No Explaining to Jose Lezcano. He relayed instructions through Lorimer. For Velazquez, they were open ended with only one clause – don’t go to the lead. Velazquez followed the guidelines like he worked for Garmin, putting Lady Shirl in a comfortable spot in sixth, before unleashing her rally to capture the Grade II Lake George by three-quarters of a length over ExSee lake george page 31

The field bounds toward the first turn in the Lake George. Winner Perfect Shirl is covered up in mid-pack (blue cap).

Shirl went and schooled in the gate today, she needs to go see the gate and get acquainted with the gate crew. She was perfect. I was very happy with her.” Morning or afternoon, everybody was happy with Lady Shirl. Also a halfsister to Grade I winner and stallion Shakespeare, she continued a prolific run for Attfield and Velazquez. “Every time he puts me on a horse, it’s one, two, three. Every time. On paper it looked like a really salty race, all those fillies in there, she was very good,” Velazquez said. “I did my mental homework to see where I wanted to be and who was speed and who wasn’t speed, hopefully you get in the right spot and hopefully you get a good trip. It just happened to be a perfect trip, no trouble, no anything like that, when I asked her to do something, she was right on it.”

clusive Love and No Explaining. It was an All-Canada trifecta. If you were following the maple leaf, you would have cashed a $6,103 ticket. Of course, you had five Canadian shippers to choose from; Crescenda finished fifth, beaten 2 lengths while second choice Bay To Bay never threatened, finishing 10th of 12. Velazquez, who rode Lady Shakespeare in her most recent victory in the Grade II New York Handicap, was impressed with little sister. “She’s very nice, very nice. Nice pickup ride, huh? She was going comfortable the whole way, she broke well, got in the middle of the pack, just left her alone,” Velazquez said. “At the halfmile pole, I committed myself to where I wanted to be, at the quarter pole when I pulled her out, she was there, she was game, it was pretty easy, not much instructions, not much anything, she did it all on her own. The assistant said the only thing Roger doesn’t want you to do is be on the lead, ‘As long as you’re not on the lead, you’re OK.’ That’s pretty easy, right?” Lorimer had done the difficult part. She arrived with Attfield’s duo Monday, taken them for a jog Tuesday, a lope Wednesday and took Lady Shirl to the gate for her necessary finishing touches. “We liked the fillies, they’ve been training well, they ran well in their last starts up at Woodbine, we had to give them a shot,” Lorimer said. “Roger said let them sit off the pace and make a run. Good Shorts Seitz, son score with Zosogood; Aquino continues Spa success BY BEN MEYERS

WEDNESDAY RACING RECAP

The security guard initially gave Stephen Seitz a hard time getting into the paddock before the first race Wednesday. For good reason too, the teenager had shorts on and the one thing besides the Travers that has been a constant at the Spa for the last 14 decades is tradition and decorum. “No shorts in the paddock.” However, after a little bit of explanation that he was the son of Karl Seitz, the owner of Zosogood, and the only reason that he had shorts on was to accommodate for the blue cast that went from just below the knee to the ankle, the guard was more than happy to let the younger Seitz in to see his father’s horse. After the horse won the 7-furlong allowance, Stephen, who broke his ankle playing at a football camp a few weeks ago, hobbled into the winner’s circle to celebrate on crutches. “I can’t do too much right now,” said Seitz, who will likely miss the football season at LaSalle High this year. “It has been tough to get around lately, but this is something I have been looking for-

ward to for my dad. I’ll struggle a little bit to be here for something like this.” Zosogood, a 4-year-old Malibu Moon gelding, won his second race of the year in 1:23.36. It was the first time David Cohen was aboard Zosogood, but he knew that both he and the horse were in a good spot for the race. “He was really well-prepared,” Cohen said about the Bruce Levine trainee. “It is like being the driver of a car when you touch the gas and he just takes off. That is a big advantage when riding in a race.” Readin Group was second, while favorite Hittin The Note was third. • Over the past two years Aquino has traveled between barns nearly as much as he traveled from Uruguay to America. The 6-year-old First American horse has changed barns six times among five trainers since coming Stateside in spring 2008, but even with all of that bouncing around Aquino seems to have found a home at Saratoga. The Rick Violette trainee improved to 2-for-3 at Saratoga

with a win in the third, a 7-furlong test for claimers. “He has always been a really neat horse,” Violette said. “He has had to deal with some bad circumstances and he isn’t the same as he was as a 2-yearold, but today I just told Alan (Garcia) to go out there and have fun.” Garcia has ridden Aquino, who finished in 1:22.96, all three times the horse has run at Saratoga with the first two tries coming back in 2008. However, after three races of mild success, Essex Ferry had a rough winter at Aqueduct when she was separated from Lerman’s training. “It may have been the dirt, it may have been the weather, for whatever reason it just didn’t work out this winter,” Lerman said. “Her mother ran well here and now she is too so maybe it is just something about this place that brings it out in her.” Sudden Silver finished in second just over a length back, while Won Token and Money Charger ran to a dead heat for the show. • Saratoga native Chad Brown continued his fast start to the 2010 season when Much Fanfare came home to just that while winning the sixth at 1 1/16 miles for maiden claimers by a neck after rallying in the stretch. “Our luck is holding out,” said Brown, whose previous three wins came Essex Ferry (9) reaches the wire first in the fifth for trainer Roy Lerman. with first-time starters. “The staff is working way overtime and that is what a great ride he gave us there.” it takes to be successful at a meet like this.” Conspicuous nosed out Mordecai Jones for the Brown, who finished the 2009 meet with five win- place. ners, already has four – tied with Todd Pletcher for the top spot. Helping those in need of it Dogwood honors Barbi Moline for rescuing horses in need of aid BY KATIE BO WILLIAMS

Barbi Moline accepts her Dogwood Dominion award from Cot Campbell.

Mike Kane

Over Enough didn’t have anywhere to go. Suffering from EPM and stuck at a hot, sticky Florida racetrack, the state-bred bay needed the rehabilitation time that no one could give him. Enter Dogwood Dominion Awardwinner Barbi Moline. The year was 1994. One telephone call from a friend and self-proclaimed animal lover Moline took the grandson of Alydar home. Now nineteen, Over Enough is Moline’s trail horse and the one horse she will never re-home. The first horse Moline rescued, he is far from the last. Moline calls Over Enough the “unsung hero” behind her role as the Intake Director for Florida Thoroughbred Rehab and Placement, a branch of Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue that Moline spearheaded in 2005. Thanks to Moline’s ingenuity, the program employs an innovative fundraising technique that could serve as a template for horse rescue around the nation. One third of one percent of purse monies from the first, second, and third-place finishers at Calder and Gulfstream flow

directly into the organization; the local jockey colony also donates $1 per mount. Accordingly, the horses that pass through the Thoroughbred Rehab and Placement program are horses that have raced at Calder and Gulfstream. A unique organization that currently operates on five acres in Wellington, Thoroughbred Rehab and Placement rehabs and re-homes every horse that comes into their system. “We fix them,” Pure Thoughts co-founder Brad Gaver said. In case you’re wondering, “fix them” includes surgeries, no matter what the cost. Horses live like show horses, becoming acclimated to their new employment, group turn-out and farm animals. A mentally challenged lamb named Mary totters around the farm, calming even the most high-strung new intake. “It’s a very peaceful place,” Gaver said. With success stories finding new homes as Grand Prix jumpers, children’s ponies, polo ponies, police horses, lawn ornaments and pets for “sixtyfive year old women whose dream their See Dominion page 37

whole life has been to own a horse,” Moline’s efforts have led to the rescue of 105 horses in the last year. At a luncheon on Wednesday, Dogwood Stable’s Cothran “Cot” Campbell awarded Moline with a $5,000 check and a bronze statue of the award’s inspiration, 1970s English Champion sire Dominion. A panel of three judges that included trainer Todd Pletcher, Campbell’s wife Anne Campbell and Daily Racing Form columnist Jay Hovdey determined the award from 30 nominees. Moline represents the 18th recipient of the award, given to racing’s “unsung heroes.” Under a tent behind

the Reading Room, Campbell cited the numbers that correspond to the 18 years: eight women, 10 men, $90,000 in cash, $72,000 worth of bronze and $4,500 worth of chicken salad, the regular fare at the annual event. The key to the whole thing, Moline said in her acceptance speech, is money. The industry knows horse rescue costs money. The program cannot continue to do the work that it does without adequate funding. That’s fundraising, donations, innovative thinking and acceptance of responsibility on the part of the sport. The program’s directors, all of whom work sans salary, aim this year to purchase an adjacent 60 acres to expand the Wellington farm. Sixty acres that cost money. Campbell summed up the spirit of

the program, drawing attention to the immediate and critical nature of the program. With an organized and equitable funding system, Moline and

the Florida Thoroughbred Rehab and Placement program address a need in the industry that can no longer be ignored.

There used to be National Steeplechase Day at Saratoga. Schooling at Oklahoma, fans lined up to watch. Two races, usually including the Lovely Night Handicap, made up the afternoon festivities. The steeplechase crowd mingled with the flat crowd. It was a special day, a day to celebrate THOROUGHBREDS racing over jumps and THOROUGHBREDS racing on the flat. There is no National Steeplechase Day any longer. Perhaps, this is as close as you’re going to get as we combine Steeplechase Times with The Saratoga Special. Part by design, part by necessity, this is the hybrid version of our endeavors. If it wasn’t late on a deadline, I’d explain some kind of symbolism, breaching the gap between our two lifelines. Either way, you’re reading a dual-purpose newspaper. A term used to describe the yards of Dermot Weld, Francois Doumen and George Baker in Europe and Tom Voss and Jonathan Sheppard here. Something Joe and I can call ourselves. Dual-purpose. One-purpose. Horse racing. Steeplechasing used to hold a more important spot in Saratoga. Now, it’s six races, spread over 40 cards. Sign of the times, sure. Money talks. Jumpers walk. We understand that part. We don’t understand the misconception on both sides. These are Thoroughbreds; owned, bred and trained by the sport’s best. Last year at the Eclipse Awards, I couldn’t figure out why the video highlights showed Dr. John Chandler and Jimmy Bell along with Jonathan Sheppard when the steeplechase Eclipse Award winner was announced.

Jump Racing

Later I realized, that Mill Ridge bred Red Letter Day and Gainsborough bred Spy In The Sky. Funny. I know it’s not something Bell or Chandler strive for, but there they were, as representatives of Eclipse finalists. Watch the exploits of Jonathan Sheppard and Tom Voss at this meet. Did you see Danielle Hodsdon ride a a flat winner and a jump winner at the meet last year? I’d like to see Javier Castellano do that. Dual purpose? Dual victorious. Check out the colors on Virginia Minstrel in today’s first. Recognize those? Hint, a smaller set used to hang in Jim Maloney’s office and go on horses like Lamb Chop. The trainer Julie Gomena, won the Rolex Advanced 3-Day in 1994, the biggest three-day event in the country. She’s married to Robert Bonnie, son of Thoroughbred breeder and equine lawyer Ned Bonnie. Mabou is owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey. Yes, the same Ramseys who usually win the leading owner title at Churchill Downs. Michele Sanger owns and trains Birthday Beau; she and her family own flat horses, she bought a yearling by Purim at Fasig-Tipton July. Look at the breeders, they could show up in the program for the Jim Dandy or the Yaddo; William Backer, Augustin Stable, Kingfield Farm (owners of Saratoga stakes winner Jambalaya), R. D. Hubbard, Fitz Dixon, Fergus Galvin, Jonathan Sheppard. We still can’t fathom the resistance shown by so many flat people about the jumpers. It’s the same horses. Isn’t that what it was always about? As both sides of the sport struggle for exposure and acceptance, why shoot at your brother? But we also can’t fathom, the ignorance from the steeplechase people about flat racing. The steeplechase product is not good enough when it comes to Saratoga. It’s not in-need, you’re not sell-

ing food or shelter. Steeplechasing is suffering like most racetracks from lack of inventory. Short fields are a common problem but today’s race attracted nine entries from five trainers. One of them, Quiet Approval, is a likely scratch, leaving eight horses for four trainers. Steeplechasing has not drilled a deep well. Jump crowd, please don’t show up for today’s first and go home before the second. There’s a full day of racing, NYRA would like to see you stick around, bet some races, eat some lobster rolls, drink some cocktails. Show them you care. Introduce yourselves to the flat world, make a positive impression. Thank the trainers and owners, buy them a drink while you’re at it. Tell them about the viable option for their horses. Trainers, raise your game, it’s the racetrack. Be on time. Bring your papers. Apply for your license before raceday. Don’t enter if you don’t plan on running. Check the Form to make sure there are no mistakes. Answer reporters’ questions, go on the TV shows, radio shows and podcasts. Jockeys, raise your game, it’s the racetrack. Wear a coat and tie, if you don’t respect what you do, nobody will. Pull up on the outside of the turf. Ride straight and true. Lengthen your hold at the jumps, shorten your hold in the stretch. Ride past the wire. Don’t stand up and pump your fist for winning an allowance race. Don’t claim foul unless you mean it. Know your weight and do your weight. Pull up when you should. Finish when you should. Be professional. Management, raise your game, it’s the racetrack. Fill the races with competitive fields. Scour the entries for any potential problems, no late scratches for ignorance. Get out and meet and greet, talk up the game, you’re on a recruiting mission. Now, let’s meet for the first, it’s National Steeplechase Day.
