Rock lover Barker’s mare brings talent, manners into New York-bred stakes by katie bo williams Trainer Edward Barker is not afraid to cuddle with Meese Rocks, his 5-year-old entry in today’s $70,000 7-furlong New York-bred Fleet Indian Stakes. The solid bay mare with the blue-collar pedigree has given Barker and her owners a dream ride, and she has a sweet personality to boot. Meese Rocks put a head over Barker’s shoulder and Barker rubbed her long muzzle. “She’s looks like a colt, doesn’t she? She’s so powerful,” Barker said, stepping back to appreciate her size. Meese Rocks is one of seven horses Barker trains for Wall Street businessman Henry Terranova and his family. “Henry owned years and years ago and wanted to get his sons involved. He and his sons and wife come to every race,” Barker said. “It’s nice to have owners like that. They really appreciate the fact that she runs so hard. “She ran her eyeballs off at Mon-

mouth,” Barker said, referring to the mare’s most recent start, a win in one of Monmouth Park’s competitive allowance races. “There were some tough horses in that race.” Meese Rocks also won a maiden race for the Terranovas at Saratoga last summer. It was their first start at the Spa. The mare enters the Fleet Indian in her second race off a layoff. She took a break after placing fifth in a muddy

ungraded stakes at Aqueduct in February. The defeat came on the heels of a $60,000 stakes victory over 6 furlongs at the same oval. Meese Rocks figures to be the speed in the race but attempts the 7-furlong trip for the first time in seven starts. In her last race over the distance, a turf allowance at Belmont, she finished third, beaten 2 1/4 lengths. Mike Hushion’s Wicked Diva is the 5-2-morning line choice. Due to soundness issues, the daughter of Jump Start has made only four starts in her career, all in 2010, but she has never finished worse than second. Hushion expressed confidence that the twice-victorious filly is sound and ready for the step up in class. He glanced over the early entries

Hushion also had a hand in the career of Jimmy Jerkens’ entry, the 3-year-old Congaree filly Shine Upon that Hushion views as stiff competition. He cared for the lightly raced filly over the winter of 2009-10, winning twice in two starts. Shine Upon, who runs today for Blue Bison Stable and Hoffman Thoroughbreds, returned to Jerkens prior to her most recent start, a second in an optional claimer at Belmont.

Karl Grusmark’s Weathered held her own in two Grade I stakes at Saratoga last summer, finishing fifth to Icon Project in the Personal Ensign and fourth to Seventh Street in the Go For Wand. Though well-beaten fourths in her last two starts over a mile, she finished a close sixth (beaten less than 2 lengths) after being squeezed on the rail in the 7-furlong Grade II Barbara Fritchie in February. The shortening in distance should suit Chevalier Stable’s 5-year-old mare. Sweet Lorena will carry the Shining Starlite Racing colors. The 6-year-old daughter of Langfuhr enters off of two good starts, a close second and a win, at Presque Isle Downs. She has won 13 races from 31 starts for trainer Michael Ferraro. The remainder of the field includes My Dinah running for Akindale Farm and trainer Kathleen Feron, Lovely Daniella for Shining Starlite and trainer Ferraro and Eager Emma for Edward Cox and Nick Zito.

In Time Beau Choix arrives for turf mile score BY MIKE KANE Confident as he was going in, trainer Barclay Tagg wasn’t so sure that Beau Choix really would deliver. There was the matter of getting past Lonesome Street and Lighthouse Sound, who had been dueling on the lead of the Quick Call Stakes Thursday at Saratoga and he was running out of ground on the inner turf course. One last determined surge QUICK CALL got it done, though, and the STAKES RECAP Elusive Quality colt ridden by Javier Castellano won by a head over Lonesome Street, who was a neck in front of Lighthouse Sound in the 1-mile, $70,000 stakes. Beau Choix won for the third time in his last four starts and improved his overall record to 3-1-2 from seven career starts. The Belle Meadows Farm/Lael Stable homebred is proving to be a capable runner. “I like the fact that he won,” Tagg said. “He had me worried there for a few minutes. Going into the race and all along since I put him in the race, I thought he could win it. I thought it was a good spot for him. But it came up pretty salty and he had to run.” Starting from post six in the field of eight, Beau Choix managed to avoid traffic on the demanding course. “He was in a good position starting out,” Tagg said.

“Then the other horse got inside of him, but that was right after Javier wanted a clear run, which worked out well. In a mile race like that, timing is pretty important. Javier had it down. “I was a little worried there at the end because it didn’t seem like he wanted to go by those horses, but then Javier got into him again and shot on by and won the race.” Beau Choix had not raced since winning the Jimmy Murphy Stakes May 15, Preakness Day, at Pimlico. He was ready for action in the Quick Call and got his nose in front at precisely the right time. “He’s pretty laid-back, pretty classy,” Tagg said. “Today we took him out and jogged him a mile. I tradi-

tionally do that with most of my horses the morning of the race to clean them out. He was feeling really good and bouncing around. He came back in and cooled out, laid down and slept all morning.” Nicely rested, Beau Choix ran himself closer to graded stakes company on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Tagg said he hopes bigger stakes are ahead and that the colt might have some range. “I’d like to try him a little further, like a mile and an eighth or something like that,” the trainer said. “He’s eventually going to have to do that anyway if he’s going to be a good horse. I wouldn’t mind if he was the champion miler, but watching him today I think he might be able to go a little further. We’ll see.”

Owner, filly enjoy ride to Spa winner’s circle

BY SEAN CLANCY Tanya Gunther hesitated at the rail of the winner’s circle. Then she skipped onto the track to celebrate with trainer Bill Mott. Then she retreated back to the rail. Then she was cajoled to go on and get her picture taken. “I’m in jeans,” she said. LUCY Jeans or no SCRIBNER jeans, it was a STAKES RECAP Saratoga stakes win and Gunther finally made the most of it, posing next to Devil By Design, who dominated the Lucy Scribner restricted stakes Thursday afternoon. Part-owner of the 4-year-old filly, Gunther had just landed in Albany before she and her chauffeur David Ingordo (of Zenyatta fame) dashed to the racetrack. They made it. And were glad they did. Devil By Design secured a comfortable stalking spot in third as Decelerator and Southern Accents set the pace down the backside. less on the favorite, nearly 4 lengths off the pacesetting pair. Second choice Worstcasescenario ranged to Devil By Design’s flank leaving the backside, cuing Desormeaux to secure position. Devil By Design closed the gap rapidly which, in turn, prompted Alan Garcia, to jump on Worstcasescenario who ranged up four wide making it a four-way rumble with Devil By Design, three wide and under pressure. But not for long. Worstcasescenario and Devil By Design dispatched the retreating leaders and went past the eighth pole together. By the sixteenth pole, Worstcasescenario was spent and Devil By Design was a newly anointed stakes winner. Owned by John Gunther (Tanya’s father), Eurowest Bloodstock (that’s Tanya) and Tony Chedraoui, the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro finished 7 furlongs in 1:22.55. She finished 2 1/2 lengths clear of Southern Accents who re-rallied to run down Worstcasescenario who wound up third. Mott had his customary victory on his birthday. And Gunther had a Saratoga stakes win to savor. “I just landed, that’s why I’m dressed like this, David picked me up at the airport, we flew past a few cops and made it,” Gunther said. “It’s awesome, a nice end to a bad week, we had to put a horse down yesterday, this made up for it a little.”

Bred on John Gunther’s Glenwood Farm in Versailles, Ky., Devil By Design sold for $160,000 at Keeneland November in 2006 but was bought back by John and Tanya Gunther who bought out one partner and added another. “We liked her, the mare had thrown some good horses,” Tanya Gunther said. “It was before Medaglia d’Oro came on to be hot but we really liked her.” Devil By Design won her debut at Keeneland in the fall of her 2-year-old season while racing for Jose Fernandez, then switched to Eddie Kenneally’s care for a start at Gulfstream Park in Janu-

ary 2009. By July, she showed up under Mott’s banner and that’s where the fun started. She won an allowance race here last summer before finishing second in the Cat Chat at Belmont Park. She closed her 3-year-old season with an allowance win at Churchill Downs. She came back where she left off, winning an allowance at Churchill Downs in May. Mott wheeled her back in two weeks for the Grade III Bed o’ Roses July 5, but she flopped, winding up seventh, beaten 14 lengths as the second choice. “We were all a little perplexed,” Gunther said. “It was super hot that day,

there was no real explanation to it, maybe the heat got to her, it was a bit quick to come back, to go in a Grade III was a maybe a little ambitious I suppose, but we are an ambitious group.” Mott couldn’t explain the drubbing either. “I was discouraged, I thought she flattened out a little early but she ran a big race first time back and it was quick back, I don’t know,” he said. “I didn’t think she had to win but I was a little surprised she got beat that distance.” Mott regrouped. Two weeks after the Bed o’ Roses, Devil By Design breezed a half-mile over the Oklahoma, finishing in 49 and 2/5 seconds, signaling that she was ready for the Lucy Scribner. “She worked well, ran a cough for four days but seemed to get over that, most of it anyway. They always give you something to worry about,” Mott said. “She bounced back (from the Bed o’ Roses). It always makes you wonder when they run a little flat on you, you never know if they’re going to ever come back and fire a big shot, particularly fillies.” Devil By Design snuffed out any concern with a dominant win, her fifth victory from 10 career starts. Her first stakes victory increased her earnings to $186,455 and gave Mott something to think about. “I guess the only thing here is the Ballerina unless they have another one of these restricted stakes,” Mott said. “We’ll see how she’s doing, we’ll leave it as an option for her.”

St. Patrick’s made Special Kenneally, Ryan score on Irish promo day BY MIKE KANE Irish-born trainers Eddie Kenneally and Derek Ryan came through with victories on NYRA’s St. Patrick’s Day promotion. K e n n e a l l y ’s winner was Dyani, who found the 1 3/8 miles on the turf of the fifth race to her liking. She closed on the outside under Julien Leparoux, got the lead near the sixteenth pole Kenneally and broke her maiden by two lengths. Dr. William Reed’s homebred four-year-old had been competitive in her five previous starts this season, and got just the right scenario in the threeturn jaunt as the favorite. “We’ve been waiting to get her in the longer races,” Kenneally said. “It worked out perfectly. Hopefully we can do some more of these longer races.” Dyani’s dam, Richer By Love, is a half-sister to Reed’s now-retired star Perfect Drift.

“We’ve been waiting for this,” said Brian Reed, son of the breeder. “She wanted this ground. She needed that.” Kenneally certified that he is “100 percent” Irish as a native of County Waterford. Ryan didn’t know about the promotion until he arrived at the track and heard the Irish music. Great Gracie Dane gave him reason to celebrate when she scooted through an opening along the rail to win the ninth race for New York-breds by a neck. The Royal Academy filly bounced back after a couple of losses in stakes company. “She’s a talented filly,” he said. “After she won the (allowance), I ran her in the first stake, she got beat a length and a half and got checked really bad at the eighth pole. She’s better than your average New York-bred. I’m trying to get a stakes win on her to give her some value as a broodmare. We’ll figure out where we’re going now.” Ryan got a nice ride out of Eibar Coa, who took the 3-year old inside to what turned out to be the ideal spot. “We were a little worried turning for home,” Ryan said. “I said, ‘I hope he finds a hole.’ But she’s a very game filly. She’s one of those fillies that will go through. As soon as I saw that he had a little bit of a gap, I knew she’d go through it.” See Thursday page 15

• Trainer George Weaver waited for the right spot for Richlyn Farm’s 2-year old colt Powhatan County and found it in the seventh race. Javier Castellano’s timing completed the job and the colt got up to win by three-quarters of a length in the 1 1/16-mile turf race. “We bought him earlier in the year and he looked like a horse that wanted to go a distance of ground,” Weaver said. “Once I trained him a little bit, I was like, ‘Well, I think he’s got a little speed, let’s get a race into him at Keeneland and see how he does.’ The fact that he was third at Keeneland after looking like a horse that wanted some ground, I was thinking that this horse might be all right. “I thought about running at Belmont, but he had a skin disease and decided to save him for his first one at Saratoga. I thought he was going to do pretty well. It’s always tough up here. I knew there was no guarantee, but I was pretty happy with the hand I was holding.” • Changes in company and equipment were part of Sky Hosoya’s runaway victory in the second race, a $50,000 maiden claimer for 2-year-old fillies. Sky Hoyosa was fifth against maiden company July 17 so Todd Pletcher added blinkers for the filly’s second race. Ridden by John Velazquez, she wired the field in the 5 1/2-furlong race, winning by 9 3/4 lengths in 1:03.66. Trained by Jonathan Sheppard for longtime client Bill Pape, Sermon Of Love raced with blinkers for the first time in 32 starts and showed plenty of life. “He’s been disapointing this year,” said Sheppard of the 7-year-old son of Pulpit. “He’s quite a high-class horse, I don’t think he’s been doing his best. Maybe the blinkers but I think the change in riders had as much to do with it not that (regular jockey Danielle Hodsdon) had been doing anything wrong. I feel bad for her because she wanted to wait and run him in another race.”

A day at the races. It’s rare I get to the races for the whole card. Usually, it’s office all afternoon, scamper over for the stakes and the nightcap, rush back to give words to horses. Thursday, heeding my advice to stick around, I arrived at paddock time for the first and stayed all day. Wow, this racing game is fun. Old friends. New friends. Reacquainted with the once-a-year friends I’ve met over the years at Saratoga. I don’t know many of their names, but know their faces; we talk about the old days, the dreams, the fallen comrades, the ones who got away, we slip into a Springsteen song. The first is named for a friend who we’d give anything to see again. Jonathan Kiser, a 22-year-old phenom, died too young, back in 2000. His race makes you think of him again. He burned rubber all over this town and would have won Thursday’s Jonathan Kiser on any of about five runners. He was that good. I see his family; sisters who look just like him, enjoying a bittersweet day in Saratoga. Jonathan Sheppard sends out three runners for the Kiser, he goes 1, 3, 4 and wins it with the longest shot of them all. We picked Sermon Of Love in the Turf Writers a year ago, we ignore him in an allowance race a year later. Lose $38 on the race. Ron Anderson watched the jumpers. Think he’s not a student of the game? who saved ground the whole way, stayed on at the last when he almost tipped over, he could ride.’ Yeah, that’s defending champion and clubhouse leader Paddy Young, the Garrett Gomez of jump racing. I walk out of the paddock for the second and am asked to sign an autograph book for my friend Miriam. That makes me laugh. Get a tip on Roy Lerman’s first-time starter in the second. I ignore it. Pletcher and Velazquez dominate. Lerman’s Better Safe beats one. Look for jumper prospects in the third. Watch the race from the box seats near the sixteenth pole. Wow, $20,000 maiden claimers plod home after 9 furlongs, six seconds slower than the track record. Chad Brown drops another one, wins with High Stakes Player who’s now with Chris Englehart and Purple Haze Stable. Bill Mott, typically, wins one on his birthday when Devil By Design takes the Lucy Scribner. I wonder about Lucy Scribner. Looking for any angle other than Mott’s birthday, I meet Tanya Gunther, who owns part of the filly with her dad and another partner. She’s a breath of fresh air, following her dad’s lead in the Sport of Kings. I ask her when she got hooked. “Since I was small, I used to go watch the horses gallop with my dad and go through the pedigree books before I knew what I was reading,” she said. “I took a hiatus for a while, I was trying to be a career girl, but then I came back.” Right to Saratoga. Dyani, a stamina machine, wins the 11-furlong turf maiden while I’m trying to interview Mott in the racing office. D’bigcat wins a $10,000 claimer, first off the claim for Rudy Rodriguez who used to putter around the jocks’ room when I was riding. A Saratoga rookie, he improves his 36-percent strike rate.

Jorge Chavez wanders through the clubhouse, asks Jason Blewitt how to get to the box seats. The jockey looks lost, out of the confines of the jocks’ room. Two-year-old turf horses take over for the seventh. My nephew Ryan likes Peb Hughes, I like Peb Hughes, everybody likes Peb Hughes. We lose our money as he fades to fourth. The pick of the paddock, Br. Alexander, runs second in his debut, returning $8.10 for the place. Damn, it’s costly to stay at the races all day. I’m introduced to Chris Clayton, sister to the late Marjorie Cordero. Chris galloped Quick Call for Sidney Watters. She cared for the icon of Saratoga for years after his career. Her eyes light up when she talks about the horse, the trainer, the racetrack. Walk in the paddock for the Quick Call and any handicapping I did on paper goes out the window when I see Barclay Tagg’s Beau Choix. He’s a rock. Then a harmonica breaks any concentration. Tom Proctor’s Our Douglas walks into the paddock with his own fight song, humming next to him. Proctor’s hotwalker blows out a tune as Our Douglas circles the tree. Proctor just laughs. I’ve seen it all. Longshot Lighthouse Sound has been on my jumper radar for months, he runs huge to be third, he’s the one who got away. Two Irishman sit on a bench in the clubhouse. Leo O’Brien and Benny Connaughton give me tips. Derek Ryan’s horse in the ninth. Leo’s horse in the 10th. Ryan’s horse wins, pays $6.10. O’Brien’s Pretty Boy Freud finishes second, pays $13 to place. I know better than to listen to two Irishmen at the races. My favorite horse on the grounds, Cherokee Speed, runs in the last. He winds up fifth, after a tough trip. I want to hug him too. I head home, a day at the races complete.
