The Special quotes from Saratoga

“I don’t know why they call it laser tag, all you do is run around and shoot people.” Nolan Clancy, 9, on his favorite Saratoga pastime

“Ten years ago on a Thursday in August I would have slept until 11 in the morning, left the house at 1 and got to the track just in time for the second race. Ten years later I’m leaving my house in Delaware at 6 a.m. so I won’t miss the A.P. Smithwick. And that’s hardly a complaint.” Brian Nadeau, who became a steeplechase fan while working at The Special

“Doc told me, ‘Don’t ever go there unless someone invites you and pays for it.” Frederic Lenclud on his agent’s advice about dining at Siro’s

“Mike has confidence in me. I have confidence in him. I don’t ride every horse good but he never takes me off a horse, that’s good. At least you can relax and ride your horses the way you want.” Julien Leparoux on his relationship with trainer Mike Maker

Once More

All grown up, Forever Together angles to make history in Grade I BY JOE CLANCY Julien Leparoux stopped on his morning tour of the Saratoga Race Course stable area to watch Forever Together train one day this week. “She was beautiful, did everything they needed, she just trained,” the jockey said. That wasn’t DIANA STAKES always the case. PREVIEW As a young horse, Forever Together sometimes refused to train or even leave the barn. She fought with her riders, her groom, her trainer. She flashed ability and speed, but she did the wrong thing more often than she did the right. “I feel badly about some of the ways we handled her when she was younger,” trainer Jonathan Sheppard said. “We just thought she was a bit of a clown or a coward and needed to be pushed on. We were wrong. It turned out she was highly intelligent, quite sensitive. We were making her do things, running behind her, throwing handfuls of dirt at her and yelling at her.” Now 6, Forever Together of course put all of that behind her, taught her

8

people how to cope and blossomed into a champion. She bids for an unprecedented third consecutive victory in the Diana (Gr. I) for Sheppard and owner Augustin Stable – taking on six rivals in the $500,000 stakes at 1 1/8 miles on the Mellon Turf Course. The day’s ninth race drips with quality with Proviso, My Princess Jess, Phola, Shared Account, Maram and Dynaslew signed on but just one starter can make history. No horse has won three runnings of the stakes, first run in 1939. “Probably the only reason no horse has ever won it three times is because no horse has ever tried it three times,” said Sheppard. “They all get packed off to stud, which I’m not a big proponent of, as long as you take care of your horses. You breed your horses to race them and to have fun.” Forever Together has provided plenty of the latter, rising from 44-1 shot in the 2008 Just A Game Stakes to a champion, multiple Grade I winner and earner of more than $2.8 million. She’s finished first, second or third in 19 of her 22 career starts (including the last 14). Purchased via consultants EQB at Ocala See diana page 10

Forever Together soaks up some bath water Friday morning.

Breeders’ Sales as a 2-year-old, Forever Together started out as a speedster – breaking her maiden at 2 in November and winning two sprint stakes at 3. Back then, she tested Sheppard and anyone who tried to ride her in the mornings. The trainer knew the talent was there, but couldn’t harness it. Frustration in the barn turned to losses on the track. “She had stopped sweating which we didn’t pick up on as soon as we probably should have,” Sheppard said. “I just think she was sure she wasn’t going to be comfortable when she trained so she stopped doing it.” After a three-month break from rac-

Sent off a 9-1, she rallied from last to win by three-quarters of a length – closing so quickly that Kent Desormeaux (aboard runner-up Dynaforce) nearly threw his whip away in disgust at the wire. Forever Together springboarded to an Eclipse Award as champion Turf Female. “I got off her that day and said she was going to win the Breeders’ Cup,” said Leparoux of his first ride aboard the Kentucky-bred. “She felt that good to me.” Forever Together did indeed win the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf that fall and began a sustained run of excellence. She came back for the 2009 Diana as the reigning queen, but needed every inch of the 9 furlongs to beat Carribean Sunset by a head. Thanks to heavy rain the week of the race, Sheppard sweated the decision to run – finally opting to go after walking part of the course with Leparoux at 8:30 the morning of the race. “We’re always worrying about something and it was the rain last year,” Sheppard said. “We were fretting and trying to make up our minds and she came through for us again.” She didn’t parlay the Diana win into a championship, but did finish third in the Breeders’ Cup (behind European star Midday and Pure Clan). Her connections called the race Forever Together’s last – until they decided it wasn’t. Putting a broodmare career on hold, Forever Together went back into training and opened her 2010 campaign with a second in the Grade II Jenny Wiley at Keeneland. She followed that with another second, this time to budding star Tuscan Evening, in Hollywood Park’s Grade I Gamely in late May. He’s not satisfied with seconds, but Sheppard won’t quibble with his mare’s performances this year. She’s keeping stellar company and cranking out quality efforts. “I feel very blessed to be in this position regardless of where she finishes,” he said. “Just to have a horse at the age of 6 that can still be a contender at that level. If you’re 1-2-3 in Group ones and twos, that’s fine. You belong. She’s established herself as a 6-year-old as a top horse regardless of what happens Saturday. She just finished second to probably the best filly or mare turf horse in the country.” Leparoux missed that race (Rajiv Maragh substituted) while recovering See diana page 12

from an injury, but knows what to expect from Forever Together this time around. “The first year, I didn’t know her at all and they were worried she was going to be too rank so I had to be last to make her relax,” said the jockey. “Last year, she could still be a little bit that way but she was better. I used to have to take her back, now I let her do whatever she wants. I could be second or third and I wouldn’t be scared about it.” The transformation was gradual and came with better behavior in the mornings, some different treatment for the

sweating issue (including a little Guinness now and then), patience from assistants Danielle Hodsdon and Barry Wiseman – and simple maturity. “A lot of it is we are managing her better because we know her better,” Sheppard said. “She’s very happy now. (Thursday) morning Dani went to get on her in the walking ring. She took off she was so anxious to go to the track. Three years ago, we might have had a fight just to get her out of the walking ring.” And for another Diana encore? “She’s on top of her game and that justifies keeping her in training and coming back for a third year,” Sheppard said. “It’s always race by race, you never know what’s around the corner but so far you can’t take much away from her.”

Grade I turf stakes lures select group to oppose two-time winner by joe clancy As good as Forever Together is, she’s hardly the only name in today’s Diana. The field includes a host of talented turf fillies and mares led by the first three finishers in last month’s Just A Game (Gr. I) at Belmont Park, Juddmonte DIANA STAKES Farm’s Proviso PREVIEW won that day for trainer Bill Mott and gets the honor of top weight in the Diana based on two Grade I wins this year. The 5-year-old Dansili mare moved to Mott’s care after racing in France with Andre Fabre and California with the Bobby Frankel stable. She opened 2010 with a second in the Grade I Santa Monica on Santa Anita’s synthetic surface in January. Moved back to turf, she won the Grade I Kilroe Mile against males in March before announcing her arrival in New York with the Just A Game score June 5. Good form on the track also comes with good looks in the stall. Late Friday morning, the glossy bay minded her business while workmen attended to some

construction projects at Mott’s Oklahoma barn – and let her trainer brag. “She couldn’t be doing better,” Mott said. “Want to look at her? She’s amazing. Just beautiful.” Bred in England by Juddmonte, Proviso kicked away from Phola and My Princess Jess in the Just A Game and could get first run on Forever Together today. “It’s a very competitive race, a small field but very competitive with a lot of them getting right at the same time,” Mott said. “Jonathan’s filly has proven it. She’s that good and he’s a tough man to beat.” Mike Smith flies in from California for the ride the 123-pound highweight, the second choice (behind Forever Together) at 5-2. Phola saw her three-race winning streak come to and end in the Just A Game but did little wrong in the halflength defeat to Proviso. The daughter of Johannesburg won the Grade III Hillsborough at the Diana distance and gets Ramon Dominguez at 4-1 for trainer Todd Pletcher. The weigh station is open. The 2010 class of 3-year-olds returns to serious action this weekend with the Jim Dandy at Saratoga today and the Haskell at Monmouth Sunday. All summer 3-year-olds exit here; if everything checks out, proceed to the next stop, the Grade I $1 million Travers Stakes Aug. 28. But, first they JIM DANDY must clear inSTAKES PREVIEW spection. Seven trainers entered nine 3-year-olds in the Grade II Jim Dandy while six trainers entered eight horses for the Grade I Haskell, worth $1 million. Nick Zito has entries in both stakes. “The Haskell is a good race, the Jim Dandy is a good race,” Zito said. “These are the two best races since the Triple Crown.” The Haskell attracted the established – Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky, Preakness runner-up First Dude and the once-beaten Trappe Shot – while the Jim Dandy collected the soon-to-beestablished. At the top of that list are Pegasus winner Afleet Express, Louisiana Derby runner-up A Little Warm, undefeated New York-bred Friend Or Foe and Dwyer winner Fly Down. Just behind them come an eclectic group of Irishbred Steinbeck who makes his first start in the United States for Aidan O’Brien,

another undefeated New York-bred Stormy’s Majesty, stakes-placed Aikenite and two-time winner Miner’s Reserve. Trainer Tony Dutrow was planning on scratching Winslow Homer in favor of Sunday’s Curlin Stakes. When it’s over, one, maybe two, perhaps three will have moved on while the others will retreat. It all begins at 5:48. Zito has been here before. The Hall of Fame trainer has bridged the gap between the Belmont Stakes and the Jim Dandy many times. This time, he does it with Richard Pell’s Fly Down, who ran hard to just miss in Drosselmeyer’s Belmont, succumbing to the winner’s stamina in the final stages. Zito has kept it simple for the son of Mineshaft since spanning the 12 furlongs in the Belmont. “When they get that mile and a half journey they’re really fit,” Zito said. “You just maintain the fitness that’s all. When you go a mile and a half it’s a long journey, the main thing is to keep them good, happy, what everybody tells you.” Fly Down makes that easy for Zito. The good moving chestnut glided over the Oklahoma track Friday morning. Under Tiffany Mueller, Fly Down bowed his neck and galloped like a classic horse. “He’s really easy, very classy, he’s a throwback,” Zito said. “If I study his pedigree more – you know, I’m a student of the game, I’ve been doing it since I was 16 with a badge – he’s probably got See jim dandy page 17

something more in his pedigree beyond Mineshaft. I’m confident in the horse.” Zito started Fly Down twice last fall, winning a maiden at Churchill Downs in November. Put away until Feb. 21, he returned in a 9-furlong allowance at Gulfstream Park, closing to win by a head. Zito was impressed. “He came off the bench, this is steeplechase training, this is Jonathan Sheppard, Tommy Voss, November to February, mile-and-an-eighth, he won,” Zito said. Fly Down made his stakes debut in the Louisiana Derby a month later but failed to fire, finishing ninth. “You knew he’d have to bounce a little, that’s the only bad race he’s ever run and he steadied,” Zito

said. “You’ve got to be content, I’m happy I’m in these races. If I could do that all the time I’ve got nothing to worry about. To be in those races, on this level, what else could you ask for.” Fly Down breaks from the outside post under Jose Lezcano, who was aboard him for the Dwyer victory but not the Belmont when he rode Derby second Ice Box. Lezcano stopped by to breeze a horse for Zito Friday morning. The trainer and jockey exchanged thoughts on tactics briefly. The real session was scheduled for later. “I think we need to get over, Jose,” Zito said. “The 8 (Friend Or Foe) has some tactical speed inside you, he’s probably got to get over, if he does, you get over. It’ll work out, the main thing is, in front of God, take him to the outside when you make your move, I don’t care how wide, don’t stop him once he gets running. Like the Dwyer. You rode some race in the Dwyer.” See jim dandy page 18

Zito entered allowance winner Miner’s Reserve but also entered Bob LaPenta’s colt in Sunday’s Curlin Stakes. “He’s pretty good,” Zito said. “I would prefer the Curlin but Bob will probably want to run in the Jim Dandy. He’s a good horse, he’s better than he looks, but there are some hidden horses in here.” Trainer Jimmy Jerkens hopes to bring Afleet Express completely out of hiding. Owned by Gainesway Stable and Martin Cherry, the son of Afleet Alex won his debut in December at Aqueduct, then struggled while in Florida for the winter, but has rebounded with two strong performances this summer. The big, long-striding colt crushed allowance foes at Belmont Park and then rallied impressively to win the Grade III Pegasus at Monmouth. The Jim Dandy could continue the progression. “We’ve done all we can,” Jerkens said. “I know he’s a little bit behind some of the rest of him, as far as seasoning and stuff but he’s really come around in leaps and bounds from earlier in the year. He kept coughing a lot, had

bad skin disease, he couldn’t fight anything off down there for some reason. He came around after we came back to New York.” Afleet Express has always impressed the understated Jerkens. “I thought he was good but they don’t have to improve any,” Jerkens said. “There are other horses I had hopes for and they just don’t get any bigger, don’t get any stronger, just don’t change. He’s really come around.” Trainer Tony Dutrow says the same thing about his Jim Dandy runner, Edward Evans’ homebred A Little Warm. Only off the board once in eight starts, the son of Stormin Fever made a brief foray on the Triple Crown scene with seconds in the Hutcheson and Louisiana Derby and a projected start in the Preakness. Dutrow scrapped that plan when the Virginia-bred came north, spiked a fever and lost valuable training time forcing Dutrow to think summer. “I was looking forward to the Preakness. When that didn’t happen, I was like, ‘Wow, let’s hope we can get this horse back to where he was.’ That wasn’t easy, it took time. It took time. He came off the truck with a temperature, he lost weight, he got his butt kicked, was out See Jim Dandy page 20

of training,” Dutrow said. “We needed a starting point to get him going and he went forward to the allowance race, he went into that race, in my opinion, 85, 90 percent, which was fine. Since that race, he just went vroom.” How good is he? Jockey John Velazquez traveled to Delaware for the allowance meet-and-greet and stays aboard today. “Because of his race that day, it led us to the Jim Dandy,” Dutrow said. “He’s great, very good, very good. We’ll have to see how it goes, but the horse couldn’t be better, or I don’t think he could be better. Every race, no matter what, he’s shown up, no matter what distance, what jockey, what racetrack, nothing has ever mattered to him.” John Kimmel has yet to see anything bother his Jim Dandy entry, the undefeated Friend Or Foe. Owned and bred by Chester and Mary Broman, the son of Friends Lake broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park against open maidens and then toyed with New York-breds in an allowance race at Belmont and in the Mike Lee June 20. Rajiv Maragh returns for the ride. “This horse doesn’t train like just any horse, he’s shown me a lot of talent in every aspect of what he does,” Kimmel said. “I wouldn’t be going in this spot unless I really thought he had the potential. Having the potential and actually accomplishing the task are two different things. We’re asking him to do an awful lot, we’re asking him to run

two turns, against open company in a graded stakes.” Friend Or Foe has gradually tackled distances, going from 5 1/2 furlongs to 6 furlongs to 7 furlongs. The 9 furlongs of the Jim Dandy – plus open stakes company – will provide the acid test. “At some point he’s going to have to show us if he can handle open company. This is the time to do it because it really maps out a program where he could be one of the elite Thoroughbreds in the crop,” Kimmel said. “The horse has done everything, if you watch his races, I don’t think the jock has even hit the horse. He’s got a very good mind to him, he’s a brilliant mover, he’s as nice as any horse I’ve been around in quite some time.” Steinbeck traveled from Ireland for his first attempt on dirt. The son of Footstepsinthesand won his 2-year-old debut at Naas in May but has not won since, failing to hit the board in three consecutive Group I starts before finishing second in the Group III Meld Stakes, at 9 furlongs, at Leopardstown just nine days ago. Garrett Gomez picks up the ride for owners Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and John Magnier. Dominic Galluscio entered another undefeated New York-bred, Stormy’s Majesty. The son of Stormy Atlantic make his stakes debut under Edgar Prado. Todd Pletcher will line up Aikenite for his ninth try to break through the stakes barrier. David Cohen returns aboard Dogwood Stable’s son of Yes It’s True who won his most recent start, an allowance at Belmont.

Day Trip

My Dinah ships in for stakes score by BEN MEYERS athleen Feron’s daughter Katie Belle K likes to ride the escalators in the grandstand at Saratoga Race Course.

The trainer probably gives her daughter more instructions during those trips up and down than what she told jockey Jose Espinoza before he won the Fleet Indian Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares Friday aboard Akindale Farm’s My Dinah. “Jose has been on her something like 30 times, so there isn’t much that you need to tell him,” Feron said after her horse rallied in the stretch to beat favored Meese Rocks by a head. “I just told him, ‘Don’t rush and don’t fight.’ ” Espinoza obliged. “I have known her since she was a baby,” said the jockey, who won two races Friday. “She has always been very honest with a hard stride. You can ask her anything.” My Dinah has been asked to run 36

times in her career, but her past two starts at the Spa have been the most notable for Feron, who picked up her first win at Saratoga. Last year the chestnut 5-year old daughter of Victory Gallop led the Saratoga Dew by 2 lengths in the late stages before being caught from behind and finishing third by a neck. “This one was much more exciting and satisfying,” said Feron while adjusting Katie Belle’s seat in the crook of her left arm. “She has always tried so hard and this is the opportunity we got so we just made the most of it that we could.” This time around, Espinoza guided My Dinah to the outside and sat three wide on the turn and four wide into the stretch before slowly wearing down Meese Rocks. The winner covered the 7 furlongs in 1:22.86. “She was just that little bit more strong and more aggressive,” Espinoza See fleet Indian page 24

are not as exciting as her,” Feron said. My Dinah, who won for the seventh time in her career, but for the first time in more than a year, paid $16.20 to win. Meese Rocks paid $4.10 and Eager Emma finished third at $5.90. After a 5 a.m. wake-up call to get to Saratoga from Dutchess County by 7:30, Katie Belle was ready to head home along with her mother and My Dinah. All three ladies earned a good night’s rest.

On the road Mena continues comeback with first win of meet by ben meyers Miguel Mena added another chapter to his comeback story and it was pretty easy to tell that after he jumped from Ride On Josephine after the eighth race at Saratoga Race Course Friday. “This is always the hardest one to get,” Mena said through a huge smile about the first win of the Saratoga season. “The pressure is gone now, but that means I need to keep working hard to keep this going.” The first win of the meet wasn’t easy for Mena, who is battling back from alcohol problems, as he piloted Ride On Josephine through a hole on the inside where the 4-year-old daughter of Johannesburg held on stubbornly to win by a nose. “She just kept driving and driving,” Mena said. “I thought I was OK at the end.” Trained by Dale Romans for Blue Devil Racing Stable, Ride On Josephine

has finished in the money in both of her starts at Saratoga as she showed in a maiden last summer at the Spa. Lights Out Lisa was second Friday, while Carmen’s Kiss finished third in the 5 1/2-furlong, $25,000 claimer for fillies and mares. Even with the satisfaction of the win, Mena knows he can’t rest. “I am paying for the mistakes I made in the past,” he said. “But I have gotten another chance and I have learned from what happened before. All it takes is time and hard work and that is what I am doing now.” • When favorite Uncaccountable closed strongly enough to put a head in front of King Cater in Friday’s first, trainer Chad Brown let out a sigh. “As long as they are wins, I guess,” he said of his meet-leading sixth victory. “I was a little bit worried about this one. He is a nervous horse and never really settled in the post parade. I thought he was going to have to be tons the best to win and he was.” Four of the Saratoga Springs native’s wins have come for Gary and Mary West. own and Brown appreciates the patience and support. “They are great to train for because they are realistic,” Brown said. “They have been helping me since day one.” The Wests’ racing manager Ben Glass, echoed the praise. “Chad has always been my pick,” said Glass. “He is an excellent horseman and going ahead he is showing that he was a good choice. I am tickled to see how well he is doing.” Jockey Jose Lezcano got his first win of the meet with Unaccountable, who paid $3.70. King Carter paid $5.20 for the place and J J’s Prophet ($2.80) finished third. All of Brown’s wins have come by less than a length, but the trainer is OK with that. “It doesn’t matter how close any of them are,” he said. “As long as they keep coming.” • When Moshe Diane (John Velazquez) crossed the wire a length and a half in front in the second race, a New York-bred maiden claimer, owner/breeder John Behrendt had one of those moments. “It is like watching one of your kids graduating from college,” he said. The 3-year-old daughter of Pollard’s Vision had tried twice before to break her maiden at Belmont Park before doing so Friday. The favored David Donk-trainee completed the 6 furlongs in 1:11.47. The owner likened the win to runs that were

that she ran so well as a 2-year old.” Persistently broke her maiden at the Spa in August 2008, also with Garcia in he irons. Instead of looking at the past too much though, McGaughey was thinking about the future. “This really opens up some doors with what we can do with her now,” McGaughey said about the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies participant. “There are new spots for her now because she can go long on the dirt so we are very pleased with that.” Tizahit finished second with Film Charm third in the four-horse field.

• Going to the post, the Lee Pokoik’s Arch Support may have been favored, but she had to overcome some other impressive bloodlines in the sixth, a 2-year-old maiden going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. The daughter of Arch and Two Ninety Jones surpassed her well-bred rivals with a strong tempo up front, leading at every call and scoring by a half-length under Ramon Dominguez. The winner exited a narrow loss at 6 furlongs July 9. “She is a natural two turn horse,” trainer Gary Contessa said. “She ran well before because she has a lot of class, but she is huge, she looks like a 3-year-old out there. There is an unlimited future with her. She can be any kind of horse, we just have to have her prove it now.” Mayday Maria, a daughter of Maria’s Mon, placed second in a photo over Believe In A.P., a daughter of A.P. Indy.

The World’s Yearlings

Foreign sire power added to sales BY KATIE BO WILLIAMS Fasig-Tipton offers a catalogue this year with a distinctly global flavor as part of a continuing initiative to broaden the international appeal of the Saratoga yearling sale, which occurs Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 2-3. The effort, FASIG-TIPTON which made its SALES PREVIEW debut last year, reflects what president and CEO Boyd Browning refers to as the increasing internationalization of commerce and a strong demand among American buyers for European-sired horses. The catalogue features yearlings by three prominent European sires, Dubawi, Cape Cross and Oasis Dream, as well as offerings from several strong European families. “It’s important to have a product that has appeal to all types of buyers, including Americans, Europeans and Japanese,” Browning said. “Our consignors supported that last year and horses with an international appeal sold very, very well with domestic buyers.” Fasig-Tipton offered two internationally sired horses in 2009, a filly by Singspiel and a colt by Encosta de Lago. The Singspiel filly, consigned by Adena Springs, was purchased by Shadwell for $300,000 and has not started. The Charles Fipke-bred Encosta de Lago, named Lagoon Of Diamonds, has been nominated to the 2010 Del Mar Futurity by owner Fipke, but also has not started. Both horses generated sufficient interest to convince the Fasig-Tipton team that a horse sired by a “known commodity” would meet little resistance from Saratoga buyers, provided it met the sale’s strenuous physical criteria. “Any person that studies interna-

30

tional bloodlines, that has some knowledge of what these stallions are capable of doing, will look at these [yearlings] with exaggerated interest rather than diminished interest. Everyone wants diversity,” Fasig-Tipton’s Terence Collier said. Fasig-Tipton hopes that the “Saratoga buyers” these horses may attract will represent domestic and international clientele. Collier cited the traditional European buyers (Coolmore, Godolphin, etc) in addition to Japanese buyers and, hopefully, a limited contingent of Australian buyers. A glance at emerging trends in the global racing and sales product affirms Fasig-Tipton’s confidence. The United States is the premier breeder of dirt horses in the world. However, that does not mean that the current product doesn’t have something to offer classic and emerging turf markets. While European breeders may do a better job specializing in breeding horses with a certain degree of stamina, Americans hold the cards when it comes to breeding speed. And speed is a coveted product. Australia is known for its speed-dominant racing product – and Australian buyers were a formidable presence at the 2009 Keeneland November sale, having picked up on what buying in the U.S. has to offer. European races are progressively moving away from their traditional classic-distance form and incorporating grass sprints. Several of the most prestigious Group 1 and 2 races in England are contested at 5 and 6 furlongs. The 2009 Breeders’ Cup World Championships integrated a turf sprint on the second day – suggesting the global significance of such a condition. Unlike most of the other Breeders’ Cup See sales page 32

turf offerings, the Turf Sprint has been dominated in both entries and wins by American-bred horses in its inaugural two years. Collier and Browning emphasized the domestic-buyer base for these horses. “With quality gains in European stallion power over the last three to five years and with the increasing number of horses racing on the synthetic surface, it was kind of a natural fit looking for a little different pedigree. A little bit of outcross would have a significantly broadened buyer base,” Browning said. “There is a significant need of horses with that type of European-style pedigree.” A glance at emerging trends in the domestic racing product affirms this emphasis as well. In what might be labeled a “dirt contraction,” tracks all over the country have made the switch to synthetic surfaces. According to Browning, 50 percent of all graded stakes races run in the United States are run on a turf or synthetic surface. Further confirming the domestic buyer base is the increased presence of American runners in European events in recent years. “It’s important to see two-way flow of traffic – to see Kenny McPeek bring a few horses to Royal Ascot on the back of Wesley Ward last year,” international bloodstock agent John McCormack said. “It was important that the follow up was there, whether he won or

32

not, just the effort to come. That sets the ball for someone else to play, with Todd Pletcher sending Starfish Bay to the King George this week.” Consignors have broadened their base for potential Saratoga yearlings. “I remember five years ago, you would think I don’t want to take anything that’s grass or European, but now, with the new focus that Fasig has put, you can sell a European pedigree up here,” said Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor. Taylor Made consigns the Oasis Dream filly. With that market in mind, FasigTipton made an active recruitment effort over the last year to attract horses that fulfilled these criteria. Beginning last fall, Fasig-Tipton approached a limited number of sellers to propose the project and ask for advice in identifying the type of horse that would be best suited to the sale. “We wanted to go for a stallion that would be known, that had some credentials and that formed the basis of our conversations. We would ask, ‘Do you have one of these?’ ” Collier said. “We were encouraged that we had any, let alone three. It’s a complicated project.” The yearlings that made the cut represent three of the top 10 European sires. While Kentucky-located Siena Farm bred and foaled the Oasis Dream filly, the Cape Cross colt and the Dubawi filly are both European-bred offerings. Historically, selling European-bred horses in the United States has been considered cost prohibitive, but both

Hip 43, a daughter of Oasis Dream, represents Europe in the sale.

Browning and Collier were emphatic that this was not an issue. “It’s not as difficult as people imagine to put horses on planes and to send them somewhere else,” Collier said. “That part of it was never really an obstacle. The cost of selling at Saratoga as opposed to a European environment is only the cost of a one-way ticket.”

Tod Marks

“One more bid will pay for the shipping costs and some of the consignors have confidence we can get more than one more bid,” Browning said. “The owner felt, rightly so, that the Dubawi could be highlighted here, that she’d really stick out here, being by the sire she’s by and the physical that See sales page 33

Continued from page 32

she is,” Paramount Sales’ Pat Costello said of the Dubawi filly, whom he thinks will appeal to domestic and foreign buyers. “The sire is so hot, we thought she would absolutely stand out here. Rather than being among 34 Dubawis in Europe, she’s the only one here.” Taylor took the same approach with the Oasis Dream filly. “We thought last year there was the most European participation in this sale ever and we knew she was going to be the only one in here,” said Taylor, who expects the filly to be purchased by an international buyer. The date of the sale was also changed in order to accommodate and attract the international buying clientele. By moving the sale up a week, Fasig-Tipton avoids conflicting with Arqana’s flagship Deauville sale, a move that reflects the strength of that market. The Deauville sale has seen its average nearly double since 2005, a success McCormack attributes to effective marketing of the event – and a catalogue that caters to a broad buyer base. While once upon a time, all of the major stallions stood in central Kentucky, Europe now boasts a strong stallion roster, and therefore, a strong auction product. This has begged the question, why travel to a product when you can get one just as good in your own backyard? Accordingly, to date, the majority of horses purchased in Deauville remain in Europe, according to McCormack. “There’s a lot of people that love to be in Deauville and love to buy in Deauville, but equally they’ve no objection to being here,” McCormack said. “But where it could really potentially hurt here is that some people might take the view, they don’t have to be here, and they’ll stay behind. And you don’t want that, you want to cater to both. Because there’s a big follow-up offer for both sales and that’s Keeneland.”

Tod Marks

Hip 56, a filly, is by Dubawi.

The Fasig-Tipton initiative does not indicate to Browning a shift to a more direct competition with these markets. “The vast majority of horses that are going to go to our sale have been born and raised in the United States, the vast majority of horses that are going to go to Deauville have been born and raised in France. We continue to see, particularly at the upper end of the

market – well, in all ends of the market – we all deal in an open marketplace. Whether that means we’re more competitive with one another, possibly, but I think the competition is good, it’s healthy. You try to strive to do better because you see not only your domestic competitors raising the bar, but also your international competitors. At the end of the day, all participants of the industry benefit from that.”

1966 Saratoga Yearling Grad OBEAH, sold by her breeder, Bertram Linder, to Mrs. Jane Dupont Lunger’s Christiana Stables. A two-time Delaware H. winner, a prestigious stakes which for many years was a G1 race, OBEAH produced 3 GSWs. But it was her Champion two and three-year-old filly— GO FOR WAND— which insured her immortality.

FinesT Since its beginnings almost a century ago, Saratoga is the first place for the fascination and glamour of Thoroughbred sales and racing. Champion Racehorses. Champion Sires. Champion Broodmares. The Triple Crown and stirring victories in Grade I events all over America. Recognition around the globe, from Royal Ascot, to Longchamp, to Australia and Japan. When racing success at its highest level is the goal, your pursuit should begin at Saratoga in August.

Trainers

cupofcoffee by Sean Clancy

Four trainers. One stakes. One morning. Friday morning, John Kimmel is neck deep (he literally has a scope draped around his neck) as he evaluates horses who breezed earlier in the morning. Kimmel connects the dots of his stable tucked in the far corner on the main track, under the trees, hard on the edge of Union Avenue. Trees, old barns, horses going in all directions. They say there used to be a tennis court where there are new stalls. Kenny Noe built them for Kimmel years ago. It doesn’t take much for John Kimmel to like a horse before he runs. I like that about him. He’s confident when he enters, or at least he instills confidence in writers when they come over and ask him about a horse. He’d make a good coach. He might win the Jim Dandy today with the hottest New York-bred in the country, undefeated Friend Or Foe, who spots experience to his rivals, but not talent. “He doesn’t know they’ve had any other experience, he knows when he looks one in the eye, he’s been very competitive. I’m cautiously optimistic but I think I’m asking the right horse to do the right task,” Kimmel said. “In this game, there are so many more disappointments than success stories, I’ve been doing it for a quarter of a century, so I’m used to riding the highs and lows, I like to at least put myself in a position to have a high, this horse has put us in that position.”

Friday morning, Jimmy Jerkens watches Afleet Express gallop, sends him home the long way through the paddock. Jerkens jumps in his gasoline powered golfcart, crosses Union Avenue and negotiates his way back to the barn on the Oklahoma side. It takes a lot for Jimmy Jerkens to like a horse before he runs. It takes a meteor strike for him to tell a reporter. I like that about him. We drive back to his barn, I’m trying to talk about Afleet Express. Jerkens wants to talk about anything but. He gets that from the Chief, his Hall of Fame training dad. I ask about the process of getting Afleet Express to the Jim Dandy. He asks me who won the jump race Thursday. It doesn’t take long to type out his quotes.

Tony Dutrow walks to the main track with his wife Kim to watch a set breeze. White hat (a cross between Gilligan and a porkpie) pulled to his brow, Dutrow talks in spurts, repeating points and then explaining his point, usually ending in questions. Son of a trainer, brother to two trainers, Dutrow can analyze a situation the way Columbus read a map. Dutrow tells it straight and true when it comes his horses. I like that about him. Friday morning, Dutrow is quietly confident in his Jim Dandy hope, A Little Warm. Let’s retract that. He’s confident in how the horse is doing. He wouldn’t be brazen enough to be confident in winning. “He’s good. He’s good. He’s good. The only thing I’m confident about is how the horse is doing, I respect the horses in the race,” Dutrow said. “I would be approaching that race thinking A Little Warm will run well because when didn’t he? He’s faced quality horses before, he ran very well against D’ Funnybone

SAUNTER TO THE TRACK FROM HERE!

sprinting, he ran very well in the Louisiana Derby, so I have every reason to believe he will run well, why wouldn’t he? He always does. But that length or two could be from first to fifth. With me training him – now it might be different with that guy training him or that guy training him – but I think he’s as good as he can possibly be.” Nick Zito mans the long shaded barn overlooking the old ball diamond on the Oklahoma side. The Hall of Famer walks from his barn to his SUV; sees a reporter, asks the reporter a question. Zito’s usually good for 10 minutes, then it’s scat cat. Zito talks in circles about horses. I like that about him. He mentions Tom Voss, Jonathan Sheppard, Leo and Colum O’Brien in a conversation about the Triple Crown. He entered Miner’s Reserve and Fly Down in the Jim Dandy. Zito became the first trainer in history to hit the board with three different horses in each leg of the Triple Crown. Ice Box closed to be second behind Super Saver and Calvin Borel in the Derby, Jackson Bend finished third in the Preakness and Fly Down was out-stayed by Drosselmeyer and Mike Smith in the Belmont. “My whole Triple Crown was disappointing,” Zito said. “I came this close to putting Mike Smith on Fly Down. It just didn’t work out. The Derby, he could have won. I was watching it with (wife) Kim in the paddock, I said, ‘Don’t worry he’s going to come.’ He’s making this incredible move and I thought for sure he was going to go out, that was no good. Then Preakness Day with Jackson, Calvin was out of horse with Super Saver at the half-mile pole, if he bulls his way, he wins. It was trying, but I’m content.” I almost believe him.
