The Special quotes from Saratoga

“No complaints. You never know what’s going to happen. Name of the Day You go with the same attitude every year and hopefully it works out. Last year they kicked my butt, hopefully this year Boudicca, Hip 189 in tonight’s session of the sale. The daughit turns around. Shut up and go to work. Stay healthy.” Jockey John Velazquez on his torrid start to Saratoga

“That money spends good down south.” Trainer Eric Guillot, after sending out Arcodoro to win Saturday’s seventh race; he paid a cool $90

“I had to go to the Parting Glass in my pajamas. Now, that’s a first.” Jump jockey who had to pick up a co-worker in distress

ter of Hard Spun comes with a powerful handle – Boudicca was a queen of the Iceni people, a Celtic tribe, and led a rebellion against the Romans. A description attributed to the historian Dio Cassius, called her “huge of frame, terrifying of aspect, and with a harsh voice. A great mass of bright red hair fell to her knees: She wore a great twisted golden necklace, and a tunic of many colors, over which was a thick mantle, fastened by a brooch. Now she grasped a spear, to strike fear into all who watched her.” Look out when this filly gets to the races.

Step One

Street Cry yearlings lead first night as sales-topper reaches $800,000 by sean clancy It was a horse sale. Nothing spectacular, nothing abominable – at least in relation to the times in which we live. Ringing in its revamped sales pavilion, Fasig-Tipton kicked off its first night of the Select Sale with subpar numbers compared to last year. Fifty-two horses sold for a total of $14,120,000, at an average of $271,538 and a median of $250,000. Twentyeight horses did not sell. In the first FASIG-TIPTON session last year, 85 horses sold SALES NIGHT 1 for more than $26 million, at an average of $315,171, a median of $230,000 and 21 horses did not sell. The gross was down 47.3 percent, the average was down 13.8 percent. The median rose 8.7 percent. A revamped sales pavilion, with less seats and cozier setting, helped make the arena feel crowded but buyers bid tepidly, and they didn’t hesitate to stop early. John Ferguson secured the session topper when buying Hip 47, a son of

6

Street Cry, for $800,000. Ferguson bid twice. Standing in the back ring, directly in front of spotter Woody Leavel, Ferguson joined in at $750,000. When the board ticked to $775,000, Ferguson confirmed with Sheikh Mohammed and bid again. It was over at $800,000. Consigned by Taylor Made, the dark bay colt is the third foal out of the A.P. Indy mare, Don’t Tacha Me who is a half-sister to European 2-year-old champion and sire One Cool Cat. Bred and owned by WinStar Farm, the colt attracted Ferguson and Sheikh Mohammed the first time they saw him. “Just a wonderfully athletic horse by a sire who has proved time and again he can do it. Just quality,” Ferguson said. “Most of the horses we’ve seen already, the team would have seen him two or three times. When you come up here, you know he’s been healthy and you know he’s a nice horse.” Sheikh Mohammed attended the sale, that makes life easier for Ferguson. “Absolutely, it’s easier when he’s here. The great thing about Saratoga is See sales page 8

Hip 12 adds some excitement to the night with his actions in the ring.

Sheikh Mohammed comes in and the great thing about Sheikh Mohammed is he’s an easy guy to work for because he knows his horses,” Ferguson said. “He involves himself in every facet of the horse business; whether it’s in the buying, the breeding, the stallion, the stud fees, the training of the horses.” Asked if he and Sheikh Mohammed see eye to eye on the horses, Ferguson laughed. “I’ve worked for him for a long time, he usually wins the argument,” Ferguson said. Ferguson signed the ticket for eight horses for $3.155 million. Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor knew the colt would be near the top of the session. “Everybody was on that horse. Anybody that was here to buy a good horse was on it. He was the most popular horse in our consignment,” Taylor said. “I knew they had vetted him, but they had vetted a lot of horses, so we weren’t sure if they were going to go or not, but he was just a heck of a horse. That made sense that he would buy him, being a good Street Cry. There was a lot of people wanting that horse.” WinStar’s Doug Cauthen felt confident as well. WinStar selected three horses to sell at Saratoga. The farm sold an Elusive Quality filly for $260,000 during the first session and offer a Distorted Humor colt Tuesday. The Street Cry colt was always stellar. “He was top three on our farm all year and then you come up here and

look around, you’re always biased, but we felt like he had the pedigree, the physical, everybody liked him,” Cauthen said. “If you come up, you want to sell him. You have to bring good stock and you have to sell them to keep people coming back. If it didn’t work out, he’s the kind you’d be proud to put in your stable but financially we needed to raise money and try to be a for-profit business.” The second highest sale came early when Helen Groves, bidding from the back ring, secured Hip 4, a daughter of Street Cry and Groves’ family’s mare Alchemist for $775,000. Groves bought out her daughters, Helen Alexander and D.D Matz for the Eaton Sales representative. See sales page 10

“Helen sent me a picture of her a week ago. I talked to Helen on the phone and I said she looks like a million to me, she might have looked like 2 or more a couple of years ago. We’ve had very good luck with the family,” Groves said. “Helen said, ‘You better let somebody else tell you what she’s worth.’ I would have sold her for a million. I don’t find that money’s worth very much, I’m old (82), well, I’m getting older. I didn’t want to sell her, the girls did. I always liked her, I liked the way she acted here. They asked if it was an RNA and I said, ‘No, it’s not an RNA, I bought her.’ I’m happy I got her.” Shadwell’s Rick Nichols jumped in early, purchasing Hip 7, a son of Rock Hard Ten, for $325,000 and Hip 16, a colt by Pulpit, for $525,000. Celebrity chef Bobby Flay bought two horses, including Hip 99, a filly by A.P. Indy who fetched $625,000, the thirdhighest price of the session.

At the end of the night, Fasig-Tipton’s Boyd Browning stopped at the corner of the office and tried to describe the night. “It was workmanlike tonight. There have been some nights when we’ve met in this same spot and we’ve said it was electric. There is a shortage of electricity in the world. It was fine, it wasn’t great, it wasn’t bad, it was fine, it was OK,” Browning said. “It’s a little disappointing because we’ve worked so hard to add electricity. Unfortunately we live in a world that it’s very difficult to generate electricity. It’s probably indicative of the reality of the marketplace.” Browning’s job is to be positive, he has not run up the white flag. “We’re only halfway through this, it’s only halftime. We’re not moping,” Browning said. “We’ve got a bunch of good horses on Tuesday If you asked 10 buyers about their short list, nine out of 10 would say Tuesday. That being said, I would not expect huge fireworks. We don’t live in a marketplace where there are huge fireworks.” – additional reporting by Katie Bo Williams.

Watch List II The Special’s Katie Bo Williams did her homework, walked the sales grounds and asked around about yearlings to watch in the sales ring. Here’s tonight’s list:

Hip 101 Bluewater: A.P. Indy colt out of Elusive Quality mare Maryfield. Bay colt is the first foal of Grade I Ballerina winner Maryfield; big, attractive physical and a lot of presence. Hip 102

Lane’s End: Medaglia

d’Oro filly out of Well Decorated mare Melisma. Already named Gold Spun, she catches your eye standing up and moving. She is a half-sister to Grade II Choctaw Nation (Louis Quatorze), who displayed durability during his career, running on into his 5-year-old year. Her second dam Marathon Girl is a graded stakes producer.

Hip 121 Eaton: Smart Strike colt out of Citidancer mare Mystic Rhythms. Well-made colt. Barry Berkelhammer last year went to $250,000 for the Malibu Moon colt out of this horse’s halfsister, restricted stakes winner Mystic Chant (Unbridled’s Song).

strong colt is a full-brother to last year’s offering (which brought $750,000 from John Ferguson and Saturday finished a green but promising fifth in a Saratoga maiden) and is a half-brother to allowance turf performer War Hoot.

Hip 142 Gainesway: Afleet Alex colt out of Belong To Me mare Private Feeling. It’s tough to come up with much else to say other than he is a half-brother to Sunday’s Grade I Haskell winner Lookin at Lucky. That he is strongly made and tough-looking is just a bonus.

How’s your list holding up? The Special covered them all in one way or another.

Hip 143

Hip 178 Denali: Smart Strike colt out of Seeking The Gold mare Sluice. This attractive filly is a half-sister to Mushka, second to Life Is Sweet in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic. Her second dam Lakeway was a multiple Grade I winner.

Eaton: Dynaformer filly out of Bertrando mare Queenie Belle: A half-sister to Unrivaled Belle, who despite getting off to a rough start (and rougher finish) in Sunday’s Ruffian Handicap, not so long ago defeated Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra at Churchill Downs. Frank Brothers bought the Empire Maker half-sister last year for $180,000.

Hip 127 Stone Farm: Bernardi- Hip 152 ni colt out of Harlan mare Owsley. The

Dromoland: Street Sense colt out of Richman mare Rich-

babe. A $340,000 Keeneland November pinhook purchase, this colt is a halfbrother to Grade III winner Richwoman and by arguably one of the hottest new sires on the block.

Hip 186

Gainesway: Indian Charlie colt out of Smart Strike mare Strike Rate. This racy colt has arguably one of the best physicals in the sale; he

Tod Marks

is from the family of consistent Irish Group performer Phantom Breeze.

Hip 195 Lantern Hill: Cape Cross colt out of First Trump mare Two Clubs. Strong Irish-bred colt is a half-sister to the Red Ransom colt Red Clubs, a good 2-year-old sprinter who raced through his 4-year-old season. Hip 199

Lane’s End: Gulch colt out of Storm Bird mare Weekend Storm, who is out of Weekend Surprise. Blue hen second dam aside, this colt still has an impressive pedigree. He is a full brother to multiple turf Grade I winner Court Vision and has a scopey, attractive physical and a great walk.

Magna Graduate was my first purchase, venturing from the Show Jumping World into Horse Racing. Purchased privately by Elizabeth H. Alexander, shortly after breaking his maiden he went on to earn over $2.5 million. After making 35 starts, running on 16 different tracks on two continents, he retired sound. He currently stands at Darby Dan Farm.

Buying to sell Pinhookers walk the line in yearling market

Shoppers make the sale for pinhookers.

A

s the equine market continues to adjust, even at the top level, the industry’s most speculative participants have undergone a contraction of their own. The contingent of pinhookers who buy weanlings and resell them as yearlings continue to subsist in a tough market, but the level of expertise that is required to make a living has risen. “The market continues to be selective. There is a viable pinhooking market and a lot of people have enjoyed a lot of success pinhooking weanlings to yearlings but you better have a high level of knowledge and be good at it because if they don’t go the right way, the market can be pretty tough on you,” Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning said. “It’s tricky – if it was easy, everyone would be doing it,” Woods Edge’s Peter O’Callaghan said. Those that have been able to meet the level of expertise necessary to purchase a horse selected to sell at Saratoga are confident of their ability to survive, although there is some dissent as to how best to exercise that ability. “It doesn’t seem any different to me than it ever has. Maybe you pay less and maybe get a little less. Same procedures, different dollar signs,” Gainesway’s Brian Graves said. “I don’t know if there’s necessarily a drop in profit margin. There’s just a drop in the price you give and a drop in the price you receive. When you buy the right horse for the right money, there’s still a good profit margin to make.” O’Callaghan was more sensitive to the changes in profit margin. “When the profit margins are tighter than they used to be, to accumulate a worthwhile profit, you need a number of horses, rather than just being able to pinhook one or two. You need a dozen or 15 to make money for you,” O’Callaghan said. Pinhooker David Hanley offers three pinhook purchases through Kitty Taylor’s Warrendale consignment. “Depending on the capital available to you to spend, the number of opportunities to pinhook are slimmer so you’re not going to get as many horses as you would like to get,” Hanley said. “A broader number and spread your risk is a better idea, but you’re restricted by what’s available and the money you have to spend,” While most pinhookers have scaled down the price of their purchases to account for the contraction, Dromoland Farm’s Gerry Dilger has taken a different See pinhookers page 22

approach. Dilger’s consignment accounts for several of the highest-priced pinhooks in the sale, featuring a Hard Spun colt purchased for $300,000 and a Pulpit colt purchased for $425,000, among other six-figure acquisitions. “The nicer horses are always going to bring money and there’s always 10 or 15 people up there bidding for the same horse, so that’s what makes them expensive,” Dilger said. Purchasing weanlings for big tickets has become increasingly out of vogue; however, Browning displayed confidence in that end of the market. “You’ve evaluated and measured based on the quality of your horse. It’s a relative thing,” Browning said. “If you’ve got a nice horse, you can sell the

fur off a pinhook here, you can sell the fur off a pinhook anywhere, if you’ve got a nice horse.” Browning insisted the marketability of those high-dollar weanling purchases

correlated to the quality of the horse when the yearling sale arrived, not to the price that was paid for them as a weanling. “It depends on what that $300,000

“It’s tricky – if it was easy, everyone would be doing it” Woods Edge’s Peter O’Callaghan ity. It depends on what you get for your purchase price and how it develops over the next eight months.” Dilger maintained that your chances of meeting the necessary criteria for success as at a yearling sale increased with the quality of the weanling purchase. “When you buy them good, most times they stay pretty good,” he said. O’Callaghan summed up the more common consensus with regard to bigticket weanling purchases: “I suppose there was a time where people were giving an awful lot of money for foals,” O’Callaghan said. “I know it still happens. But there’s just not as many people on the other end to give you in excess of 250 at the moment. Two hundred grand is a big barrier for most yearling buyers. There’s always horses that will break it, but not the volume of them that there was a couple of years ago. We have to be a bit more careful as to what we give for them, but people still want the product.” There is an increased risk associated with the pinhooking game, especially in the upper tier of the Saratoga market. “The market has gotten tougher. You’ve got to have no holes. They’ve got to meet all the criteria for the buyers, so that makes it tougher to buy them as foals,” Hanley said. Browning also emphasized the risk. “If you get it wrong, with the changes in your market, the consequences of your failure are pretty significant,” Browning said. “You can’t be saved by a rising market.” Despite this increased risk, Graves suggested that the shorter associated time commitment has allowed the pinhooking division to react more quickly to market changes; consequently, pinhooks have become the most stable sector of the sales market. “That’s the part of the business that’s stabilized the most,” Graves said. “It’s much more stable than people that bred horses that had to ride the downturn.”

Numbers Game Sage of the scratchboard keeps Saratoga informed by terese karmel

A

lone figure in a red shirt, he makes his way back and forth across the Saratoga infield, a journey into the past that technology and changing habits have rendered irrelevant. For 32 years, Melvin “Bow” White, has raised and lowered the creaky wooden slats of the infield scratchboards, which decades ago were the main purveyors of essential information to racegoers “I’ve been seeing you walk back and forth for years, and I still don’t know what you do,” one of his friends told him recently. Little wonder. “Once it was the main source of information. Now most people don’t know what it’s for,” White said recently. He laughs at the “insult,” fully aware that community members who stand guard over history keep him in that job. If nothing else, horse racing, and particularly Saratoga, is steeped in tradition and the presence of the hand-operated scratchboards is just another symbol of that at this historic racecourse. Over the years the scratchboard has been nicknamed “the guillotine” because of its similarity to the machine that beheaded thousands in the mid-1790s who opposed the French Revolution, including the monarchy. Terese Karmel Wood slats with the names of jockeys and the word “scratches,” have taken “Bow” White works the infield scratchboard. the place of the bloody blades (the French guillotine was known as the “national razorblade”), but the mechanism of raising and lowering the boards through rope pulleys, similar to those on flagpoles, is the same. However, the “executioner” is not some minor official in top hat and cape, whose actions delighted crowds of bloodthirsty onlookers, but a knowledgeable man, fit and energetic for his 69 years. During the race meet, White’s day starts at 6 a.m. when he takes his post at the first turn gap at the Oklahoma training track, supervising the comings and goings during the 4 1/2-hour morning training sessions. When he leaves that job at 10:30, he takes a few hours’ break and then heads for the main track, where, with faded pink “Saratoga” canvas bag in hand, he crosses the dirt oval, steps carefully over a small green wooden plank that covers a shallow gully, continues over the two turf courses and ends his journey behind the first scratchboard where he shuffles through a jumble of wood-block numbers to send up the scratches and, if necessary, finds the correct plank with a jockey’s names if a rider is switched. The regular jockeys names are white on dark green planks; apprentices have red planks. As they are raised, the planks make a groaning noise not, White points out, unlike a horse when it’s mad. When he’s hoisted the information on the scratchboard at the finish line, he walks to the eighth pole to do the same thing on the other scratchboard. The information is never raised to the top of the 20-foot poles, with gold mosque-like domes on top because the wood poles are in bad shape and it’s risky. The scratchboards correct, White relaxes on a bench behind the infield hedges or makes a cup of tea in a work shed where a small 1970s-era television is tuned to the OTB channel. As the horses approach the stretch, he rises and walks around the hedges to witness the final drives. The job is not without risks: Because the wood is splintered and weatherbeaten, it’s not unusual for a plank to pop out of the runners that hold it in place and as evidence of this, White has wedged a small red piece of wood on one of the slats to hold the plank in place. Recently, a frayed section of rope gave way and the boards came tumbling down, “just missing me here,” White said, pointing to the red bill of his tan Saratoga cap. Over the years he has seen just about every great horse to step foot on a racetrack. He remembers that when Secretariat was stabled on the backstretch, he was brought to the gate by eight Pinkerton guards who accompanied him straight across the infield. Why special privilege?

“Because he was Secretariat,” White answered. He’s also made a few friends over the years, including Dukey and Granny, two geese he feeds regularly. Dukey’s father, Duke, was dinner for a fox that nabbed him in the pen across Union Avenue where some of the waterfowl are housed during the winter. Dukey, himself, isn’t in great shape. The bottom half of his beak is broken but it doesn’t keep him from waddling to White when he spots him for his daily corn. Originally, from Brooklyn, White has been coming to Saratoga since he was a kid when his aunt ran the Oklahoma kitchen. As a young man he cleaned the bathrooms at the Oklahoma track, work that required him to push a wheelbarrow filled with supplies. In the off-season, he is an accomplished contractor, constructing small buildings, painting, landscaping and doing other jobs for homeowners and landlords throughout the town. Although he follows the horses (a Racing Form accompanies him to his scratchboard job), White looks forward to the end of the meet when things calm down. “There’s so much coming and going,” White said. And besides, when it’s all over, he doesn’t have to walk looking down at the ground the way he does for the final yards of his daily commute. Those that notice him on his daily trek to the infield have asked him why his head is always down. “I tell ’em, ‘because of the goose droppings,’ ” he said with a smile.

Discreetly Mine and John Velazquez return after a lopsided win in the Amsterdam.

ast week, Discreetly Mine worked a quick half-mile in 46 1/5 seconds over the Saratoga main track as a final prep for Monday’s Amsterdam. On paper, the time struck trainer Todd Pletcher as too fast. In person, the workout looked perfect. “I was a little worried that he worked so fast the other day,” Pletcher said. “It wasn’t the way we normally like to work, but you had to see it to appreciate how easy it was for him. You don’t see horses go 46 and 1 and prick their ears at the wire very often, but that’s what he did. I was upset that it was as fast as it was but if you watched it it was hard to get too upset.” Ditto for Discreetly Mine’s performance in the Amsterdam, a Grade II for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs. The E. Paul Robsham Stable homebred broke quickly and allowed Essence Hit Man to zoom to a clear lead down the

backstretch. With fractions flying by in 21.45, 44 and 1:07.76, Discreetly Mine sat second and waited while the seven others tried – and failed – to keep pace. At the quarter pole, John Velazquez said go and the 3-5 favorite wooshed past – from stalking second to total control without much effort. The son of Mineshaft won by 8 3/4 lengths in 1:14.27. Essence Hit Man stayed for second with In Jack’s Memory third. The victory looked easy, powerful, fun and Velazquez echoed the opinion. “I didn’t have to do too much,” said the jockey. “Sometimes it’s that easy. It’s nice when you get to ride those kind of horses and then they show up.” Discreetly Mine started 2010 on the Triple Crown road and won the 1 1/16mile Risen Star at Fair Grounds in February. Mine dragged himself into a speed duel with Eighyfiveinafifty early and hung on for second. While it was a loss, the race told Pletcher something about his horse. “After the Derby we felt like the logical thing to do was back up and regroup, give him a little bit of time and regroup,” said the trainer. “I was a little surprised he showed as much speed as he did that day, but it did make me think he’s faster than I originally thought he was.” Pletcher tabbed Velazquez (from Javier Castellano) for the horse’s next start, the Grade III Jersey Shore at Monmouth July 4. Going 6 furlongs, Discreetly Mine sat off the pace and kicked late to win his second stakes of the year. The Amsterdam came next on the docket and looked ready-made for a tractable sprinter. Essence Hit Man made it even simpler with the up-front work. “He’s settled, which is very good,” said Velazquez. “If you don’t have to fight them, it’s much easier. The three times I’ve ridden him have been short and he’s been great – off the pace, relaxed.” The running style would suggest longer races, but for now Discreetly Mine (a half-brother to Grade I winner Discreet Cat) will stick to sprinting. “I don’t think there’s any doubt he goes a mile and does it well so we’ll see,” said Pletcher. “The best part about the way he runs is he stays relaxed. The work was the same way – it was just an indication he was doing as well as he is. He came out of it quickly, cooled out good and was happy. He’s on his A game for sure.”

MONDAY RACING RECAP

Quite a day at Spa

DiPrima shines with training double

BY MIKE KANE

No one topped Gregory DiPrima’s Monday at Saratoga Race Course. Two starters. Two wins. Lots of smiles and handshakes for the 38-yearold trainer. Sure, Todd Pletcher also won a couple of races, including the Amsterdam with Discreetly Mine. Fact is, Pletcher has had plenty of doubles through the years at old Saratoga. DiPrima doesn’t DiPrima often win two races on a single program anywhere – he had 11 wins in 84 starts this year through Sunday, while Pletcher was 174-for-630 – so a pair at on a hot, humid, sunny Monday was, well, special. “It’s the best day it could ever be,” he said. DiPrima was happy with Mighty Tuff’s win in the third, a 5 1/2-furlong, first-level allowance for New York-breds See Monday page 32

on the turf. The Good And Tough gelding is owned by Hayward Pressman. A little over two hours later, DiPrima was back in the winner’s circle for a photograph after Australis Princess won the seventh, a $25,000 claimer on the turf. Mighty Tuff was 7-1, won by a neck and paid $17. Australis Princess, owned by Michael Imperio and Jesse Iglesias and the 2-1 favorite in her race, won by 6 lengths and returned $6.60. “It’s been a wonderful day. I couldn’t be more pleased,” DiPrima said. “I thought we had shots today. You need luck and everything else, but we thought that both had good shots.” DiPrima grew up in Howard Beach near Aqueduct and has spent a lot of time around the track. He worked for trainer Frank LaBocetta for about 10 years and went out on his own four years ago when LaBocetta left the business. In 2007, DiPrima picked up his first Saratoga winner. In 2008, he had three. Last year, he was blanked. • Jockey Ramon Dominguez picked up the first of his three winners with Lisa Jean in the opener. Dominquez gave the the 4-year-old Proud Citizen filly a very efficient ride, guiding her to the hedge from the outside post in the field of 10 and swung her out three paths coming off the turn. She ran down the pacesetters in the stretch and won by 1 3/4 See Monday page 33

lengths. It was her second victory in a fourrace career. She was third by a neck in her debut in California last year and broke her maiden for trainer Graham Motion on May 31. She was second in a seven-furlong first-level allowance race on July 4. “She’s going to be very useful in the New York-bred races down the road,” trainer Graham Motion said. “The last time, Ramon kind of second-guessed himself. He left her an awful lot to do at Belmont that day, but he was very adamant about her settling. He said 5 1/2 up here was really going to be the ticket for her. I’ve got to give him all the credit.”

Queen’s Harbor won the second race for Rick Violette and Shaun Bridgmohan on Monday.

Tod Marks

• Veteran trainer Rick Violette was feeling emotional after Queen’s Harbor won the second, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden claimer on the dirt for 2-year-old New York-bred fillies. “She was bred and owned by a dear friend of mine, Michael Martin, who passed a couple of months ago,” Violette said. “He was a great owner with a great family tradition in the business. She was one of the horses I bought from the estate. She was pretty well prepped. She acted like a professional today and she showed some talent. We thought this was a good spot for her today and that’s the way it turned out.” Queen’s Harbor was the second choice in the field of seven, dueled for the lead under jockey Shaun Bridgemohan and drew off to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Violette said he trained for Martin for several years. “He’s just a prince. They don’t make people any better than him,” Violette said. “You really couldn’t say enough about Michael Martin. I don’t know if he knew how to get angry or say something nasty. I don’t know if it was within him. He’s just one of those very, very special people who is very, very missed. This is sweet and very emotional.” • Pletcher’s first winner of the day was Sunday Splitsville, a 2-year-old colt who wired a field of maiden claimers in the fourth as the 3-5 favorite. He was third in his debut on June 18. “The last time out he just got stuck in a speed duel and he came off on the wrong end of that,” said Pletcher’s assistant, Tristan Barry. “It was a little bit better today. The horse to beat (William’s Prayer) stumbled badly out of the gate and was sitting last. So we had it a little bit of our own way on the front end and we just had to be good enough to hang on from there.” John Velazquez rode Sunday Splitsville and Discreetly Mine to move to the top of the jockey standings with 14 wins through 10 days of racing. • The 9-year-old New York-bred horse Redefined rolled on, winning the sixth race, his 12th victory in 45 career starts. The son of Labeeb, trained by Anthony Dutrow, sat right behind the pacesetter early and responded willingly when asked by Dominguez. He won by 1 1/2 lengths and paid $5.20 as the favorite. “He’s a pretty cool horse,” Dominguez said. “He’s very laid back and knows his business by now. His record speaks for itself.”

Reading Room Memories You may think this is the story. Arthur Hancock offers a full brother to Arthur’s Tale, a 2-year-old colt who finished a green but promising fifth in a Saratoga maiden Saturday. The colt is a half-brother to War Hoot (War Chant) and Senada (Pulpit), both successful in the ring and on the racecourse. The son of Stone Farm’s Owsley is part of Hancock’s usual selective quality consignment. Hancock will tell you about the horse, the family, the marketplace. But he’d rather tell stories. “I remember sitting over there at the Reading Room with HoraWith Katie Bo tio Luro, Jimmy Stone, and it was 1963, 1964. I was just 20. They Williams were talking about whether or not Northern Dancer would be a good stallion. He had just gone to stud and I remember them discussing that. And there was this old gentleman, and he wasn’t kin to E.P. Taylor, but his name was Mr. Taylor and he was from Canada. You have to remember in 1963, if a guy was 80, he was born in 1883. His father would have fought in the Civil War if he was an American. Well, Mr. Taylor was 90, so he would have been born in 1870. He was a short man and he had this long handlebar mustache – you don’t see them very often any more. And one night he got locked out of the Reading Room. Somewhere or other he lost his key. He would go out and he would take beautiful women to dinner and stay at the Reading Room, and he was just a character. So he got locked out of his room, and he climbed up – this 90-some-year-old man – he climbed

up this vine over there and got into his room on the second floor of the Reading Room.” On a cool, overcast morning at the Spa, Hancock sat outside of his consignment, legs crossed and one eye on the vet with the scope in the Bernardini colt’s stall. On the other side of the fence, every passer-by paused on the sidewalk to lean on the metal railing and swap stories. Some of them are about horses. Some of them are about Siro’s. One was about the time Hancock was nearly arrested. “One night we were over in Siro’s, and there was some big guy from New York and he was half a bully. He and I almost got in a fight and someone said, don’t fool with him, he’s got a gun. And I started yelling at him, pull out your gun! Jimmy Moseley was there and it was about three in the morning. They called the police and the waitress told me, you need to get out of here. We went out of Siro’s and they got me in the car. Just as we were heading out, three police cars – wooo! – came straight down towards Siro’s. “The guy with the gun was all mouth, he didn’t do anything. Because where I’m from, it’s kind of a rough area. We’ll fight. The people in Kentucky are the very descendants of the people Hadrian built a wall across England to keep out.” “Yes,” a bystander observed. “I was walking past Stone Farm, I saw an Apache war party going over there.” The best stories are hardly stories;

they’re a manual, a code. An insight into how to raise three Derby winners (and two seconds). “When I started my farm, we have hundred-acre fields, and everyone said, that’s wasting land. We’ve raised three Derby winners and two seconds and there will be another one, God willing. If you want to raise a trout to be a champion trout, is he going to be better if he’s raised in an aquarium or a lake? Benjamin Franklin said in Poor Richard’s Almanac, ‘For want of the nail the shoe was lost, for want of the shoe the horse was lost, for want of the horse the rider was overtaken and slain by the enemy, all because of one little nail.’ With raising horses it’s the little things that count. Just take care of the details. If you take care of the little things, the rest will come.” Simple advice from a man who calls Humphrey Finney a gentleman and Horatio Luro a friend and a ladykiller. A man who remembers Danzig going through the ring, who has seen the best and appreciates the theatricality of a good auctioneer, who when he recalls Luro, mentions the good horse he once trained, Tap Shoes, who won the Flamingo for Hancock at Hialeah in 1981. The vet stepped out of the stall and caught Hancock’s eye. Hancock went over, putting an end to the stories to discuss his strapping Bernardini colt. He posits the big bay may have more class than his brother. The colt has a showstopping, eye-catching walk, so it’s easy to believe Hancock isn’t just selling the horse. The Bernardini-Owsley colt sells tonight.

A mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, and tedium. Based on the hit BBC series. – IMDb, the Internet Move Database. From Deedle-Dee Productions, Reveille and Universal Media Studios comes the hilarious documentary-style look into the humorous and sometimes poignant foolishness that plagues the world of 9-to-5 in the half-hour comedy “The Office,” based on the award-winning BBC hit. – NBC.com

You’ve seen the hit show. Have you seen the hit newspaper, the Office? It goes something like this. John Panagot, barn agent for Graham Motion, screams at the TV and refers to himself in third person – and a nickname – when he wins. We never hear from him when he loses. He swivels in his chair, watches the race on delay (screams like it’s live), then he calls racing offices around the country, nominating and scouting for spots. He’s come a long way since he e-mailed me out of the blue and said he wanted to be a jocks’ agent. He’s on his way to something in this game. John Shapazian, leader of the handicapping race, needs a computer to download past performances. His computer crashed somewhere along the line. We set him up in the corner and the printer starts churning out pages so he can defend his crown over Panagot, Brian Nadeau, Gaile Fitzgerald and Dean Keppler. We go through forests of paper (please recycle).

The Office...

Katie Bo Williams rolls into the office, spilling information from her brain and her laptop. A Darley Flying Start student, she’s the best “I-just-want-experience” member of The Special team. The best of a long list. She’s a sponge, yearning for education and insight into this crazy game. I remember when I felt the same way. Down the hall, Dan Vunk hunches over his MacBook Pro, copying, pasting, gray-scaling, baseline shifting. Vunk answered a help-wanted ad this summer. He doesn’t know Get Stormy from Get Lost, Velazquez from Velasquez, but he’s immersed in six weeks of deadlines and deadheats. He leaves the office most days and we wonder if he’ll be back. He comes back every day. On the beat are The Special’s “staff writers.” Phil Janack, Karen Johnson, Mike Kane and Terese Karmel are out there somewhere, copy comes in like meteors. They rarely miss. They never come to the Office. Lucy Howard stops in the office, looking for copies of the paper. We fill her up with the first 10 issues. “I’m going to go do my homework,” Howard says. During the offseason, Cupcake Lab moved in across the hall. Coffee, tea, bagels, cupcakes . . . did they know we were coming back this summer? They deliver to our office, on real plates. We haven’t eaten off real plates in 10 years. They brew another cup of joe for Joe. My brother juggles newspapers and kids like he should be part of Cirque Du Soleil. Still amazes me, he let me talk him into this madness. Discreetly Mine wins the Amsterdam. Panagot, Williams and I stand in awe. Man, it would be nice to go to the races. Our 2010 intern, Chelsea Brown, calls in with a lead from Mr. Ed’s Chicken and another from a bowling alley. She’s out of college, out of work and falling

for the racing game. Hope she doesn’t get stuck in it. Ben Meyers edits a column about Arthur Hancock. He wouldn’t know the man if he walked into the office. Two ears of corn, a breast of chicken, a strip steak, three pieces of bread await under clingwrap. Blueberry cobbler, thanks Mom, will do just fine about midnight when Meyers finishes the last page. Photographer Tod Marks used to be part of the Office. Back when he was holding out from going digital. Now, he transmits from the races, puts everything on line, updates our Website from afar and never steps foot in the Office. Lucky him. He’s been here 10 years. Loyal and talented. Dave Harmon, the other half of the camera entry, has been here just as long. We’ve never seen him frazzled, laid back, runs the Stadium Cafe like he was born to do it. Strolls into the Office at night, always with a smile and a pat on the back. He never turns up the whip. Connie Bush joined us a few years ago. She’s got a heart for the horses. Photographer Maggie Kimmitt – who doubles as billing clerk, receptionist and postoffice runner – came aboard this year and loves her horses (she owns one that won at Laurel the other day) too. A camera is a segue to the breed. The distribution team is out there somewhere, hustling papers in the box seats and looking for tips (money and betting). Ryan swore he wouldn’t listen to John Ward’s exercise rider this year. Good thing he’s not here. Ryan has saved a lot of money. Jack Clancy has sleptwalk through the first week but came to life right about sales time. Jane Motion has more energy than Unrivaled Belle. Rumor has it Nolan, 9, and Miles, 19 months, will be here this weekend. Now that’s the Office.

We’re easy to spot.
