Quality Road tunes up for the Whitney in a workout on the Main Track.

Mr. Routine Quality Road, Pletcher step into Gr. I clash BY SEAN CLANCY Todd Pletcher stood at his usual spot, a few feet from his golfcart, across from the half-mile pole of the main track. First set, Friday morning. “Whoa, son,” Pletcher said instinctively as a big bay colt stumbled a half stride, early in a routine gallop. This was not just any son. Nothing more than a stubbed toe, Quality Road ambled into the turn, past the three-eighths pole. Pletcher clicked his stopwatch at the three-eighths pole and again at the quarter pole. Eighteen seconds. “That’s routine for us,” Pletcher said. “He’ll pick it up a little as he stretches out.” Quality Road finished a mile and a quarter gallop and Pletcher put down his binoculars. “Pretty exciting, huh?” the trainer said as the routine gallop went off with-

out a hitch. Quality Road will save the excitement for today when he takes on five rivals including Stephen Foster winner Blame in the 83rd edition of the Whitney Handicap. Owned and bred by Edward Evans, Quality Road rolls into the Whitney, undefeated in three starts this year, taking the Grade III Hal’s Hope, the Grade I Donn and the Grade I Met Mile. The 4-year-old son of Elusive Quality has never finished worse than third in his 10-race career, winning seven races including three Grade I stakes. Quality Road gets back to work today off a 10-week layoff. Nothing went wrong, that was the schedule Evans and Pletcher mapped out at the beginning of the year. So far, the Virginia-bred has ticked off the first three goals. Today will be the fourth, the Woodward at the end of the meet could be the fifth and the Breeders’ Cup Classic should finish off what could be a championship year. “Everything has gone according to plan since we came up here, two works, we did our gate schooling session, our paddock schooling session, shoe him tomorrow, that’s what we normally do. That’s what Ray (Amato) likes to do,” Pletcher said. “Looks like we’re going See Whitney page 8

You’ve just got to hope for a good trip, giving a lot of weight doesn’t help your chances, but we’re pretty happy with where we are.” Quality Road totes 126 pounds, five pounds more than Blame and nine pounds above third-choice Musket Man. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird makes his second start of the year. Haynesfield puts his four-race win streak on the line. Brazilian-bred Jardim faces a mountain climb as the outsider. Pletcher is confident in his horse and aware of the situation. “Any time you have a horse who people expect to win, you watch the race differently,” Pletcher said. “There are no minor rewards here, you feel like you need to win, that’s the only acceptable result, that always changes the way you look at it. With all that being said, that’s the position you want to be in too.” Quality Road has drilled twice since arriving at Saratoga; rolling 5 furlongs in 58 and 4/5 on July 26 and then following that with a minute drill on August 1. The first breeze ranked the best of 78 works at that distance. “If you watch his works, they’ve been nothing short of amazing,” Pletcher said. “He’s a pretty laid-back horse in his routine gallops, he wouldn’t necessarily wow you on a daily basis, but when it’s game time or work time, he

knows when to turn it on. He has been very impressive, physically he’s been very good, mentally the horse has been very, very good.” Quality Road does have one blemish in his career, although it doesn’t show on his form, when scratched at the gate of the Breeders’ Cup Classic last fall. What could go wrong went wrong that

day as the colt refused to load, then went ballistic when the gate crew blindfolded him. It was a disaster. Pletcher has put Quality Road through consistent and thorough schools since that day, even simulating an afternoon gate experience last week that should have him relaxed and cool today. The gate crew will load Quality

Road first, leaving the doors open to help the process. “The Breeders’ Cup Classic was an unfortunate situation where it all went wrong,” Pletcher said. “He was handled wrongly and it speaks for his mental stability, the first time we took him back to the gate after that incident, See Whhitney page 10

he walked right in the gate, you’d think there would be some horses that would never want to go near a starting gate again, from that point on, he’s never given us any problems, hopefully that will continue.” Quality Road will be frowardly placed, his customary running style. John Velazquez will need to play off Haynesfield, who usually shows speed and who breaks to the outside of Quality Road. Garrett Gomez, aboard Blame, will be watching that unfold and planning on arriving in the second wave. Pletcher will leave the tactics to his first-call jockey. “He’s versatile enough for Johnny to determine it off the break,” Pletcher said. “He’s got a high cruising speed and takes the race to horses, like you saw in the Met where he fended off three or four different challenges during the race, we’re not going to take that away from him but at the same time, you don’t want to get in a speed duel and set it up because there are some quality late closers in here, Blame and Mine That Bird will sit back and take their one run.” Trained by Al Stall, Blame stands out as the second choice behind Quality Road. The 4-year-old son of Arch has matched Quality Road’s win total at seven (two less Grade I scores) and has not lost in his four most recent starts. Blame won his stakes debut in the Curlin here last year and then went on to win the Fayette, Clark, Schaefer and Foster. The latter was his first and only start against Grade I competition and he rallied past Battle Plan to win going away. “We’ve always felt like this horse was a very good horse but you never know. He’s continued to impress us and show it to us on the racetrack. Early this year, we decided to make a plan for the Breeders’ Cup in November at Churchill, the Whitney was one

of the stops on the way,” Stall said. “We thought we’d get him to this race in peak form and luckily we have. Everybody’s excited and we’re ready to take on Quality Road. He looks great, we’ve set him up to hit hit hard from the Whitney to November, I think we’re exactly where we want to be.” Owned and bred by Adele Dilschneider and Claiborne Farm, Blame will be ridden by Garrett Gomez, who’s been aboard for his two most recent victories. Stall believes Gomez has some options when it comes to tracking Quality Road. “We’re not like Mine That Bird, we don’t fall completely out the back,” Stall said. “We’ve always trained horses to try to train off the bridle, break off slow and finish up. He’s a very responsive horse, I’m sure Garrett will try to keep as close as he can, assuming they’ll try to back the pace up once they get themselves organized going down the backside. We’ll try to keep him as close as possible without taking him out of his game. Hopefully he’s a good enough athlete to be within striking distance and when the running starts from the three-eighths home, if we’re close enough, we have a good chance of getting there, that’s his part of the race.” Trainer Derek Ryan debated over running Musket Man, runner-up in the Met Mile, in the Forego later in the meet or the Whitney. The Forego, a 7-furlong sprint, is certain to attract a full field and Ryan decided to strike while his horse is hot. “I wish the other one was this week but it’s not,” Ryan said. “He’s ready to go, it’s a small field, if we wait until the end of the month, you’ll probably hook a 12-horse field and draw a crappy post. He always seems to get in trouble in those big fields. I was looking at it, out of his 12 races, he’s gotten into trouble in eight of them. He’s a nice horse and came close to Quality Road in the Met.” See Whitney page 12

Ryan sent the 4-year-old to Vinery’s Florida training center for a freshening between the Met Mile and the Whitney. Musket Man returned to Ryan once the trainer settled in at Saratoga. He breezed 5 furlongs in 59 and 2/5 seconds under Ramon Dominguez five days ago. Rajiv Maragh picked up the ride as Dominguez stuck with Haynesfield who’s earned Dominguez six stakes wins over the past three seasons.

Lovely Lil, Pica Slew give Hushion tough 1-2 punch in filly stakes BY KAREN JOHNSON The blacksmith was needed at trainer Mike Hushion’s barn Friday morning, but not for reasons you would think. Sheryl Schwartz, wife of Barry Schwartz who TEST STAKES has homebred Lovely Lil in toPREVIEW day’s Grade I Test, had a handbag emergency. The lock on her lovely taupe-colored bag, which contained just about everything a person would need to get through the day, had to be broken because the key was inconveniently inside. A no-nonsense looking tool did the trick within seconds, and Sheryl was ecstatic. Almost as good as winning the Test, she was asked? “Winning the Test would make me much happier,” she said. Lovely Lil is one of two horses that will be saddled by Hushion in the $250,000 Test, a 7-furlong stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Pica Slew will make her initial start for Hushion after winning three consecutive races at Calder for owner/breeder Terra

Di Sienna Stables. Pica Slew, a 2-length winner of the Grade III Azalea Stakes last month, assumed 5-2 morning-line favorite status after the defection of Franny Freud who suffered a career-ending injury Thursday. The undefeated New York-bred Lovely Lil is out of the Schwartz-owned and Hushion-trained How About Now, winner of the 1996 Schulyerville Stakes at Saratoga. The Schwartz’ named their Test starter for their rescue dog, Lil, a mixed breed, with some Lab in the pedigree. Barry Schwartz swears there is also some Greyhound in Lil’s family. “You should see her on the farm; she runs so fast,” Schwartz said. “When [Hushion] saw Lil, he had to concede she had some Greyhound in her.” As for the equine Lil, she too is fleetfooted. The daughter of Tiznow is coming off an 8-length romp in a restricted allowance race at Belmont Park last month. She ran only two-fifths of a second slower than Prioress winner Franny Freud did several races later in the card. In her career debut at Saratoga last year, Lovely Lil was a 7-length winner of a See Test page 18

New York-bred maiden race. “Lil surprised me the first time she ran because she wasn’t a brilliant work horse,” Hushion said. “I had some confidence in her when she ran in her last race.” As for Pica Slew, Hushion said he wasn’t too keen on her inside post going seven-eighths. Calder-based rider Manoel Cruz, who was aboard the daughter of Pico Central for her last three wins, has kept the mount. “I watched her races, and he rides her well,” Hushion said. Buckleupbuttercup, who finished second to Pica Slew in the Azalea, gets an-

other crack at that rival in the Test. The Eddie Kenneally-trained filly has been the picture of consistency this year, winning three of seven starts, and placing in three other races. On Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs, the daughter of Najran won the Grade III Eight Belles at 7 1/2 furlongs in the slop for her owner and breeder, Avalon Farm. Asked if the Test became a bit easier with Franny Freud out, Kenneally said, “This is still a deep bunch of fillies, evenly matched.” “Buttercup,” as she is known around the barn, has a first and a second at the Test distance of 7 furlongs. “I think she is better at 7 furlongs,” Kenneally said. “She is a solid filly; very consistent. If she proved to be competitive at the Grade I level [the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint] would be

something definitely considered. We’ll find out tomorrow.” Eric Guillot will saddle Champagne d’Oro for Southern Equine Stables. Following her upset in the Acorn where she paid $81, the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro finished second to Franny Freud in the Grade I Prioress. After a troubled trip under Miguel Mena, Champagne d’Oro was beaten less than 2 lengths by the Prioress winner. Guillot is also looking at the bigger picture as he prepares Champagne d’Oro for the Test. “We’re looking at the Breeders’ Cup, the seven-eighths sprint for females,” he said. “It looks like the division has weakened a bit and is spread out. I would like to keep her at seven-eighths. She will go a mile and a sixteenth, a mile and an eighth, but I figure let’s wait

until she is 4 and stronger and bigger for that. For now we will keep her at seven-eighths. The Test is a very prestigious race.” Rounding out the field is the Bob Baffert-trained Bonnie Blue Flag, third in the Prioress; Christine Daae who looked fabulous during the winter at Gulfstream Park in two non-stakes victories; allowance winner Ash Zee; Jostle winner Belle Of The Hall; and Tidal Pool, third in the Grade I Kentucky Oaks. om Voss stood on the landing of the metal steps that lead from the box area to the winner’s circle after Saratoga’s eighth race Friday. Hair all over the place, red-and-gold Hermes tie hanging crooked on a blue-and-white striped shirt under a tan plaid blazer, creases in his dark green pants, creases around his eyes, he looked worried, stunned, vexed. The Saratoga spirits had him. “There’s a lot of magic involved, I’m practically crying,” he said. “It means a lot. The whole John’s Call story, the whole story, from day one, the way it went. And then, what happened this winter. We all had to deal with that. We were devastated. And now this happens, yeah it makes you believe.” Voss had just watched his horse Always First win the John’s Call Stakes, a race named after the stable’s popular Grade I winner and lead pony who died See john’s callpage 24

Owned by Charlie and Barbara Noellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Merriefield Farm, Always First came into the 1 5/8-mile turf marathon as a longshot on paper â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the multiple graded stakes winner went 1-for-7 in 2009 (including a poor start over hurdles) and opened 2010 in a $50,000 claimer at Delaware Park. But paper had nothing to do with it. Under a perfect trip engineered by Robby Albarado, Always First dropped to eighth early, moved to an outside stalking spot down the backside, glided within striking distance at the top of the stretch and blasted past horses to win by a length. Perfect Shower rallied late for second by a head over early leader Coolcullen Times, who was a head in front of Attempted Humor. The winner covered the distance in 2:41.47, returned $44.60 and had people from Saratoga to Monkton to Nashville talking about ghosts, religion, spirituality, kismet. The victory came six months after Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Call died and 10 years since he won the Sword Dancer at Saratoga for Voss and owner Douglas Joyce. Always First is 9, the same age as Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Call when he burst on the Grade I turf scene. Armando Oseguera, Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Callâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s groom, led Always First over for the race and into the winnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s circle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Maybe the old boyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up there pulling for us, you think?â&#x20AC;? I won the Curlin Stakes last week, Tom Voss won the Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Call. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s magic around here every once in a while.â&#x20AC;? Voss went back to being a level-headed horse trainer and laughed at the unlikelihood of it all. He ran Always First in the Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Call not to have a runner, but simply to find a race. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You take a shot in a race like this,

there arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t many of them,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not like we wanted to run in this race, or had to run in this race, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only race like it. The only mile-and-fiveeighths grass race you can find. If there was another race, we might have run there. And so would most of the rest of them.â&#x20AC;? Coolcullen Times set decent fractions for the distance, passing a half-mile in 48.81 seconds, 6 furlongs in 1:13.97 and a mile in 1:38.82. Always First broke from the rail, settled eighth in of 12 early. After two turns and just about a mile, Albarado heeded Vossâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; advice and moved to the outside. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Robby rode him beautifully in Chicago when he won years ago and I remembered that,â&#x20AC;? Voss said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was lucky to get him (the jockey had given first call to Jonathan Sheppardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Romp, who did not draw into the overfilled race). Somebody who has ridden this horse a couple of times is so much better on him. He will not come through horses. He needs to get out.â&#x20AC;? At least two years older than every horse in the race, Always First found a spot just behind the leaders exiting the final turn, floated out a little more for running room and summoned a late kick. He ran the last 3 furlongs in about 36 seconds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s getting old obviously, but he kicked on turning for home,â&#x20AC;? said Albarado. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had a great trip, second turn I was able to save ground. The minute I swung him out â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he gave it to me. He punched. He kicked. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still got that quick turn of foot. At a mile and fiveeighths youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not supposed to have that much turn of foot.â&#x20AC;? Unless you have help.

The company will release a film FRIDAY about the immorRACING tal Secretariat this RECAP year, but jumped the gun and Lisa’s Booby Trap showed them Friday when she won the Loudonville Stakes at Saratoga by 6 lengths. Even the company that gave life to our favorite fairy tales couldn’t concoct a more perfect plot for the lives of owner/trainer Timothy Snyder and Lisa’s Booby Trap, Snyder’s only horse. He bought her last winter with all of the $2,000 he had to his name, which he kept on him for fear of being robbed. He finally paid off the rest of the $4,500 sales price after she broke her maiden at Finger Lakes in May. See FRIDAY page 31

Franny Freud retired due to leg injury BY KAREN JOHNSON Franny Freud, who was the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the Test, suffered a career-ending injury on Thursday. The ligament injury to her left front ankle was discovered late Thursday morning after she galloped. According to trainer John Terranova, some slight filling was detected and an ultrasound was taken which revealed damage to her XYZ ligament. “We saw some slight edema, but we really didn’t think it was anything serious,” Terranova said Friday morning. “Of course, we got the ultrasound and then saw the injury – about a 30 percent tear. She is fine, and you wouldn’t even know anything was wrong unless you looked at her legs, like we do, everyday. But it would be too dangerous to bring her back from this injury. I’m just so relieved we caught it. She is a very special filly to us.” New York-bred Franny Freud won the Grade I Prioress last month at Belmont Park in her final start. The 3-yearold daughter of Freud had an amazing campaign for owners Paul Pompa Jr., Stephen Yarbrough, and Winter Park Partners. She won eight of 11 starts, including seven stakes. Franny Freud earned $686,029 during her two seasons of racing.

She is named partly after Snyder’s wife, who died in 2003 after battling ovarian cancer, and partly after a strip club the owner has admittedly attended and enjoyed. The 3-year-old daughter of Drewman has had to overcome one clubbed and one flat foot, one blind eye, and every person that saw her run telling her she was no good. She even started the day as the 12-1 morning line longshot. Now she is a Saratoga stakes winner and pointed toward the Victory Ride on Travers Day, Aug. 28, but there is one problem with the story; there’s no ending – yet. “I don’t think it’s over yet,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said of the story. “A Breeders’ Cup race at the end of the year would be perfect. She is a great talent.” Snyder, who has been offered in the neighborhood of $500,000 for his filly, wasn’t thinking that far ahead. Instead he was trying to process the adrenaline coursing through his veins. “It’s a rush,” he said. “That was a tough field, but we always thought we had a chance. I am never going to sell her now.” The win pushed Lisa’s Booby Trap to 4-for-4 in her career. Before Friday, the wins came at Finger Lakes where she has turned into a could-be champion ever since Snyder figured out the right combination of shoes that solved the hoof problems that brought him the horse at such a low price. The euphoria of the victory couldn’t push Snyder’s wife far from his mind. “I have been thinking about her all day,” he said. The jockey also felt Lisa’s presence while aboard her namesake. “His wife told him that she wanted to come back as a racehorse, and here she is, living vicariously through Lisa’s Booby Trap,” the jockey said. “As far as we believe, she’s inside. They have the same heart and she is carrying this horse.” The win came after Stormandprayer and Zermatt set sizzling fractions of 21.53 and 44.54 in the early going before giving way. Desormeaux let the winner, who had been at or near the lead for her previous three starts, wait near the back. She swung four-wide and powered past the burned-out pace setters. Lisa’s Booby Trap completed the 6 furlongs in 1:09.64. She paid $5 for the win, after the public dropped her to 3-2. Nonna Mia was second ($3.10) and Stormandprayer held on for third ($3.60). The crowd packed around the winner’s circle erupted. Snyder had to make his way through a firing line of hugs, handshakes and kisses to walk his horse into the circle. After posing for the photos, he started to follow his winner up the track to the barn area, where he’s been hiding all these years, and forcing most of the media to snag him before he could get away. He wasn’t used to answering questions and giving sound bites. He may soon get the hang of it. • There was still talk about Friday’s fifth two hours after Pelican Lake won the 6-furlong race for maiden fillies and mares. See FRIDAY page 32

Coming around the turn, Pelican Lake (Shaun Bridgmohan), suddenly veered wide and crashed into She Wears The Best (Edgar Prado). At the time of the incident, both horses had been given similar trips and seemingily were in similar positions to make a run at the leaders. Pelican Lane went on to win, while She Wears The Best struggled to fourth. The inquiry sign went up and trainer James Bond had to sweat out his first win at the Spa this season. “As bad as I have been going, I thought it has got to come down,” the trainer said. The stewards ultimately did not change the order of finish, to yells of joy to some and the scratching of brows to others.

“The horse was anxious. When I talked to Shaun he thought he was going to clip heels so he had to do that,” Bond said. “I liked her today, but when we could have been DQ’d I started to think, ‘I am never going to get here.’ ” The non-call was a source of controversy that brought audible groans and yells when the race was replayed after the win by Pelican Lake was made official. “It was a moment that Shaun told me, ‘If I don’t go then I might go down and take one with me,’ ” the trainer said. “The stewards were understanding.” • In the warm-up turf marathon, also known as Friday’s seventh, for optional claimers, More Than Willing, who had never raced more than 1 1/8 miles, picked off runners in the stretch to win by a length. Monmouth in a 1-mile allowance July 4 and that test gave trainer Ken McPeek the idea of putting him in this spot. “That last one was a test for here,” McPeek said. “He was always good with the distance and he looked like he was getting stronger and stronger today.” As Mask And Wig set fractions of 24.25, 49.49 and 1:14.83 for the opening stages, Julien Leparoux kept More Than Willing in the back saving ground and waiting. When Ordination took over, Leparoux patiently advanced on the outside. Even when the pair was nudged by Cheyenne Nation with about a furlong left they didn’t panic and edged away for the win. The 1 1/2 miles took 2:29.18, but it was worth every second to McPeek. “He ran super today,” he said. “He was strong the whole way around.” • When Wall Of Worry came back to the winner’s circle after the opener, a young fan asked his father, “Why does he have a mask on his face daddy?” “So he can’t see anyone coming up behind him,” the father replied. It was a good thing the horse couldn’t see behind him too. Wall Of Worry, a 3-year old son of The Cliff’s Edge, held on for a half-length win over a fast-closing Money’s Sweet in the 6 1/2-furlong race for claimers. The race took 1:17.57 to complete. The victory added to an already strong meet for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. “We are just trying to keep going in the right direction,” Rodriguez said. “We are enjoying this while it is going.” • It looks like Sotique just likes to run and it doesn’t matter where. The 3-year old daughter of Hennessy won the 5 1/2-furlong sixth for maidens by a neck as part of an entry for trainer Bob Ribaudo. She placed in a 6-furlong try on the dirt June 30. “She has been doing so well that we had to get her in somewhere,” Ribaudo said while explaining that Sotique may also have been pointed at a another dirt try Sunday if the opportunity hadn’t arisen on the Friday card. Sotique sat in midpack for much of the race before angling to the inside in the stretch and finding some running room on the rail. She caught place finisher Fandangle with a little less than a sixteenth of a mile to go and held on for the win. Pin Turn was third. • Bill Mott’s Avanta looked impressive in her 2-length win over maiden claimers in the second, but the trainer is still trying to get a gauge on the 2-year old. “It is going to take time to find her level,” Mott said. “She is a work in progress.” The work looks to be progressing nicely as the daughter of Dixie Union broke cleanly and set up in a perfect stalking position behind pacesetter Mass Harbor before taking over in midstretch and winning with hand urging. Mass Harbor held on for second, while Cabriole was third. “It was a nice spot to be in,” Mott said. “Good trip, clean trip and able to find that stalking position. That makes it easier.”

years later, Stall has the second-choice in a Grade I stakes at Saratoga. The Whitney. This is a long way from geology class or an oil rig or running Brothers’ shedrow. Blame has taken Stall to a new realm. That’s what good horses do, they transcend, transport and tantalize. If you’ve seen Blame, you’ve at least felt the latter. The sculpted bay has it all; talent, eye, conformation, aura. Don’t bother telling Stall about it; he knows and he’s heard everybody’s stories. “Experienced horsemen have all said the same thing,” Stall said. “If you see him, he’s got the look of a good horse, the way everything fits, his whole demeanor.” This summer, Bobby DeSensi, an extrainer who mans the gap at Churchill Downs saw a set of Stall’s horses. He

yelled to Stall. “Al, I’ll take that horse right there, you can have the rest of your stable.” Sure enough it was Blame. “You’ve got good taste,” Stall said. “That’s Blame.” The day before the Whitney, Stall’s only two careers form a natural analogy. Blame was about to blow like an oil well. Garrett Gomez came to the barn to breeze Blame Sunday morning. The millionaire danced all the way to the racetrack, cruised through a half in 49 seconds and walked home content and ready. “He knew he had a little work to do, he got a little steam off of him and he knows we’re building up to a big race,” Stall said. “A regular horse, you throw a bridle on him in the afternoon and catch him by surprise. This horse, he knows something big is about to happen.”

Al Stall will try to win the Whitney Handicap today with Blame. It sure beats trying to plug the BP oil leak. A horse trainer, with a degree in geology from LSU, Stall is the only guy in Saratoga who could win the Whitney and fix the oil leak. He’d rather win the Whitney. “We’re starting to get cranked up,” Stall said Friday morning. “My family and friends are coming in, I don’t think he’ll disappoint us, he doesn’t have to win, but I don’t think he’ll disappoint us.” Stall sat in his makeshift office – plastic table, flat screen, feed bags, cases of supplies – deep in the trees of the Saratoga backstretch. In his customary khaki shorts, Stall, 48, had finished morning chores and Blame had been tucked in for the day. Stall planned to go home for a run and then wait it out until Whitney time when Blame squares off with the Todd Pletchertrained Quality Road. “When you read about Todd Pletcher getting nervous, with all the big races he runs in, there’s no telling what I’m going to be like come about 4:30, but that’s OK, that’s why we’re here,” Stall said. “We’ve run in a few Breeders’ Cup races, but being with a horse that we’re so excited about and on arguably the first big Saturday of the meet. It’s our biggest race because of the stakes at the end of the year.” Sure beats that oil leak. Fresh out of college, Stall

worked in the oil fields and on oil rigs, logging the wells to see if they contained oil. Stall admits he wasn’t on the drilling floor by the blowup preventers but studied enough in college and worked long enough to know what happened on the Deepwater Horizon April 20 when an explosion killed 11 platform workers and began spilling 4.9 million barrels of crude into the Gulf of Mexico. “Sometimes you cut a bed with some high-pressured gas or oil in there and your mud weight is not heavy enough for it so it kicks it back up the hole, that’s what happened there,” Stall said. “That’s why you have those blow-up preventers that for some reason didn’t work at a couple of levels. I’d say there was some human error. All my oil-field friends who I’ve talked to say it’s absolutely no surprise.” Stall worked in the oil industry until the company he worked for sold its New Orleans office, forcing him out of work. Young and single, he never missed a beat, going back to the racetrack. What else was there? Stall learned the game early, growing up at the Fair Grounds Racecourse in New Orleans; Stall’s father served as the chairman for the Louisiana Racing Commission for 28 years. “I didn’t care, I just went back to the racetrack and have been there ever since,” Stall said. “I can’t remember being taught how to read the Racing Form, I just know how to do it, like riding a bike or walking, it’s just something me and my brother and our family have done since we were young.” Stall went to work for Frankie Brothers. In 1991, a few months after Brothers’ Hansel won the Preakness and Belmont, Stall went out on his own. Nearly 20
