Stretched Out Blame catches Quality Road, makes case for Horse of the Year BY SEAN CLANCY Al Stall had done all he could do. It was 10:30 in the morning. The Whitney loomed in seven hours. “I just left his stall, he’s sacked out. Everything he does is like that. No excuses.” Blame didn’t need any. Sent off second choice behind super horse Quality Road, Blame wore down his rival in the final strides to win Saturday’s Grade I stakes by a head. The win put Blame squarely at the forefront of any Horse of the Year talk, just as Stall and owners Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider had hoped when they mapped out a 2010 campaign for the 4-year-old son of Arch. Blame remained undefeated in three starts this year, continued his five-race win streak dating to the Grade II Fayette at Keeneland last fall and improved his career mark to 8-for-11. Blame slayed a giant at Saratoga. Quality Road attracted the bulk of the attention leading up to the $750,000 stakes. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the strapping colt had dominated his three starts this year, winning the Hal’s Hope, the Donn and the Met Mile in consummate ease. He trained like a soldier here all meet and looked formidable in the

9-furlong stakes. Jockey John Velazquez would use his high cruising speed to punish his rivals. Blame landed in Saratoga with one thing on his agenda. Quality Road. Judiciously managed by Stall, Blame had worked his way into this kind of pit. It took 10 starts for Stall to try a Grade I stakes with the regal-looking bay colt. In his first and only Grade I start, he rallied to win the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs in June. Then it was time to put his line deeper in the water. “I’m not scared of Quality Road, I have the utmost respect for him. He’s a freaky type of horse, I don’t know if he’s a Seattle Slew type or a Spectacular Bid type, he might be but he doesn’t have to be,” Stall said the day before the Whitney. “I’d love to beat him on the muscle, that’s what makes horse racing, we’ve got a tremendous race at a tremendous venue, it’s going to be a beautiful day.” The crowd got what they wanted. All eyes trained on Quality Road as the field congregated for the start of the Whitney. After being scratched at the gate of the Breeders’ Cup Classic last fall, Quality Road has shown little reluctance to the gate. Velazquez guided See Whitney page 8

him to the rear of the gate while a dozen handlers waited to close the doors in front. Guido Rouse snapped a leather shank on Quality Road’s egg-butt snaffle bit and patted him on the head. He backed him up three paces and then led him straight into the gate. Blame loaded to the inside while Haynesfield loaded to the outside. The speedy Haynesfield rattled the front of the gate and proceeded to break through. Jockey Ramon Dominguez popped off while a gate crew member held onto the fifth choice. Quality Road never moved. Reloaded, Haynesfield broke sharply alongside Quality Road as the field of six headed to the first turn. Velazquez allowed Quality Road to establish the inside position as Musket Man briefly joined the fray from the outside. Midway on the first turn, Quality Road’s had control of the pace with Haynesfield stalking to his outside, Musket Man stacked up to his outside and Blame tucked neatly in fourth. Quality Road posted an easy first quarter in 24.41 as Musket Man took over the second spot and Haynesfield eased back into third. All the while, Garrett Gomez had Blame switched off but within reach of the leaders. Quality Road cruised through a half in 48.06 as Blame waited in fourth. After three quarters in 1:11.92, Quality Road had put some space between him and Musket Man who came under a drive first. Gomez saved ground into the turn and then

swung Blame into action, four wide as the field turned for home. Quality Road drifted off the rail, Musket Man floated out with him and Blame took dead aim on both. Gomez threw double crosses like he was in a regatta and Blame continued to grind it out, finally getting on even terms with Quality Road inside the sixteenth pole.

Velazquez implored Quality Road for resolve, but Gomez got it from Blame. In the final strides, Blame nailed Quality Road to win by a head, finishing in 1:48.88. Musket Man, as game as they come, finished on the board for the 13th time in his 13-race career. Haynesfield faded to fourth. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird never made any im-

pact. Longshot Jardim finished last. For Stall, it was vindication, exultation, initiation all at the same time. The 48-year-old trainer earned his biggest career victory, halfway through a magical season for a horse who gives effort like a lamp gives light. See Whitney page 10

“Sound horse, patient owners, pedigree to stay the trip, kind horse, it’s the perfect storm,” Stall said as he drank from a tall Budweiser can in the Trustees’ Room. “If this horse is within shouting distance at the three-eighths pole, he’s going to kick. Seems like we’re in control, we can do what we want.” Blame was a member of the first crop of 2-year-olds Claiborne sent to Stall in 2008. Blame finished third in his debut at Turfway Park that September, then won his next start at Keeneland. He didn’t return to the races until the following June, winning one of two starts at Churchill Downs before coming to Saratoga for the Curlin, a restricted stakes, which he dominated. That was his arrival. Since that day, he finished second in the Super Derby then won the Fayette, Clark, Schaefer, Foster and now Whitney. Stall credits Claiborne’s Seth Hancock for part of it. “Seth waved me off last year in the Travers, it was the right move. He waved me off in the New Orleans Handicap this winter, it was the right move. That helps a lot, people who have been around and have patience,” Stall said. “When a horse doesn’t have problems, it’s a lot easier, he’s very kind to deal with, generous in his gallops. No bad steps. We’ve never had any issues, except for a little foot issue, That’s a big part of it, talent obviously and soundness, knock on wood he’s got both.” After the trophy presentations, Gomez walked to the edge of the

dirt course, took a swig of water and watched it all unfold again on the big screen in the infield. On the screen, Quality Road passed the half-mile pole as Blame stalked. “I was pretty confident here. I had him well within striking range. It was just a matter of how much they would sprint turning for home, and how much they could quicken to outfoot me,” Gomez said. “Actually, once I took him out he leveled off and went to hitting gears that even I didn’t know he had. He hit a couple gears early on (in the stretch) and then he got into his rhythm and in the last eighth of a mile, he was really coming hard.” Gomez secured the mount on Blame in the off-season and has now won three races, earning over $900,000. The jockey never picked up his whip, relying instead on an aggressive, cross-throwing finish that helped catapult Blame past Quality Road. “I didn’t need to hit him or ask him for more. He was more on his game than he has been. He’s an honest horse, the last couple of times he just had to dig down and I had to ask him to dig down and do a little more than what he was used to doing,” Gomez explained. “Those two races were coming back, layoff races. He wasn’t quite primed up. He’s fitter now, doing better than ever, but when I first turned for home, he dropped and when he dropped he let me know that he was going to give me 110 percent today.” Gomez has been part jockey, part teacher in Blame’s progression this year. “Getting him to understand how good he is is the thing. He’s getting it,” Gomez said. “It’s a pleasure watching him progress in the mornings. He stands there, he’s the camera guy, he’s training like he means it, he’s winning races, hopefully it just continues.” Walking out of Saratoga, with his first Whitney victory in the books, Stall remembered the lunch meeting with Hancock at Panera Bread in Frankfort, Ky., that solidified him as Claiborne’s first-call trainer. A former assistant to Frankie Brothers, who trained for Claiborne, Stall had trained Claiborne’s B

string, basically taking horses not cutting it on the big circuits and maximizing them at lesser racetracks like Louisiana Downs. “We had done really well, the numbers were off the charts, he had them in front of him in the restaurant. He laid it all out there, ‘I’m sticking my neck on the line because you’ve never been there.’ I said, ‘I agree but I appreciate the opportunity,’ ” Stall said. “Blame was part of the first crop they sent to me, about 12, 15 horses. We had Terrain who was a good fun horse. Frankie Brothers told me, ‘Do everything right. Claiborne Farm is due.’ That’s exactly what he told me and he was right.” Claiborne was due. Blame made sure of it.

TEST STAKES RECAP

Champagne d’Oro storms to the finish line in the Grade I Test.

Tod Marks

by joe clancy

ack home in Louisiana, veterinarians, other trainers and racetrackers refer to trainer Eric Guillot by a one-word nickname. “Campo.” And Saratoga is finding out why. The burly, affable Guillot won the Grade I Test Saturday with Champagne d’Oro and danced in the winner’s circle while proclaiming himself “the hardest working man in horse racing.” That one will be difficult to prove, but Guillot’s work has produced one of the best 3-year-old fillies in training. Southern Equine Stable’s and Mike Smith’s Champagne d’Oro won her third race of the year – and second Grade I – with a powerful charge down the Saratoga stretch. Champagne d’Oro (Miguel Mena) stalked early leader Pica Slew through zippy fractions of 22.41 and 44.50 sec-

onds and took over late to draw off by 4 1/2 lengths over Bonnie Blue Flag with Belle Of The Hall third. The winner covered the 7 furlongs in 1:22.71. Favored Pica Slew faded to eighth of nine. “She sat just off some unbelievable fractions, but she’s a nice filly,” said Mena. “She has a big heart and when I asked her to run, she flew. I wasn’t really worried because the filly was ready. The boss had her ready, she’s been training unbelievably, she’s been working super, the only thing I had to do today was keep her out of trouble and I did, thank God. Everything went my way.” Champagne d’Oro applied pressure to the leader from the start, not in front but close enough to feel the effects of the quick pace. Exiting the turn, she kicked on before the closers could get untracked and won easily – improving to 3-for-5 this year after losing all six of her starts in 2009. See the test page 14

The Test –

Continued from page 13

The bay daughter of Medaglia d’Oro finished first in a Del Mar maiden last summer, but was disqualified from purse money due to a steroid violation. Her 2009 included a stakes placing, a start against colts in the Del Mar Futurity, the overturned maiden win and a 12th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at 80-1. Champagne d’Oro got back on track with a maiden win at Fair Grounds in her first 2010 start. The $210,000 Keeneland September purchase backed up that victory with a second in the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks in March. She finished 21 lengths behind Blind Luck in the Kentucky Oaks, but then put together two good efforts – a win in the Grade I Acorn at Belmont June 5 and a second in the Grade I Prioress, also at Belmont July 4. “We mismanaged her a little bit as a 2-year-old,” said Southern Equine’s Mike Moreno. “This is a mile-and-aneighth horse. She’s running 7 furlongs right now because we thought it was a great spot. The reason she has that kick is this filly is a route filly. What she’s doing sprinting is amazing. Saratoga? The Test? A show like that? Amazing.” Guillot agreed. “Forty-four and 2?” he asked incredulously, citing the half-mile split. “And then she went ‘bang.’ She’s a good filly. Her demeanor and her physical presence caught my eye when I saw her the first time at the sale and she’s still doing it.” Guillot took his stable out of California because of his dislike for synthetic surfaces, returning to his roots in New Orleans and following the racing schedule to New York. He has an 18-horse squad at Saratoga this summer. He won his first Grade I last year, and added a Saratoga Grade I to the growing resume. He appeared on the OTB channel Saturday morning, gabbed with fans in the paddock before the Test, talked to anyone who would listen. On the walk to the Trustees’ Room afterward, he ribbed Darley’s Charlie Boden about “making Medaglia d’Oro” and deserving a discount on the next round of stud fees. “We’ve got millions of dollars worth of good horses coming along,” he said.

“Winning here finally means we’ve come full circle for all the hard work and dedication. My work ethic is second to none. I won’t be happy until, like on Cheers, everybody knows my name.” When he got to New York, Guillot met NYRA director of racing (and John Campo’s son) P.J. Campo and laughed. “I didn’t know that was his father, everybody just calls me that; I had to tell him once I met him,” said Guillot, who may not be the spitting image but does have the gift of gab part down. John Campo, who died in 2005, won more than 1,400 races including the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with Pleasant Colony. He once told ABC Sports’ Jim McKay “I’m a pretty good horse trainer, pal. Don’t ever forget it.” Saturday, while explaining his presence in the winner’s circle, Guillot put it just as bluntly: “I’m a horse trainer, my friend, I’m a horse trainer.” Somewhere, John Campo is smiling.

Sea Road wins Moseley

Three horses in various stages of a stretch run hit the finish line together in Saturday’s Hattie Moseley Stakes. Barracks Road hung on. Sea Road rallied. And Snow Top Mountain charged. In the end, Sea Road took the right path – arriving in time to catch Barrack Road and starting early enough to hold off Snow Top Mountain in the $70,000 turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies which had not won a graded stakes on the turf. Sea Road (Cornelio Velasquez) scored by a neck over Snow Top Mountain, who had a head on Barracks Road. Final time for the 1 mile on the inner turf was 1:35.17. Owned by Alex Rankin and Patricia and Richard Lenihan, Sea Road won for the third time in four starts this year for trainer Stan Hough. The daughter of Tale Of The Cat closed 2009 with a maiden win at Aqueduct, and opened 2010 with an allowance score at Gulfstream Park. She stepped up to stakes level and won the $50,000 Boynton Beach April 17 before failing to close in the Little Silver at Monmouth Park May 30. She had no such trouble at Saratoga as Barracks Road cut out fractions of 23.56, 46.91 and 1:10.83. Sea Road sat fifth early and found clear run outside in the stretch to produce at better than 11-1.

SATURDAY RACING RECAP

Milestone Mott

Mystic scores in Spa allowance gives trainer history 4,000th win BY PHIL JANACK

I

Trainer Bill Mott (right) won his 4,000th race Saturday at Saratoga.

t took a few minutes for trainer Bill Mott to get from his clubhouse box to the winner’s circle after Saturday’s seventh race. Almost with each step, there was another hand to shake, another hug to receive, another pat on the back. Mott, who turned 57 July 29, added another milestone to his Hall of Fame career when Mystic, a 3-year-old Unbridled’s Song colt owned by Sequoia Racing, held off Missinglisalewis to win the 9-furlong turf allowance by threequarters of a length. It was the 4,000th career win for Mott, who joined Dale Baird, Jack Van Berg, King Leatherbury, Jerry Hollendorfer, Steve Asmussen, Scott Lake, Richard Hazelton and D. Wayne Lukas in the exclusive club. Mystic was the fourth and final starter of the day for Mott, a South Dakota native who has won or shared nine Saratoga Race Course training titles and now calls the city home. See saturday page 20

“It is special, for that reason,” Mott said. “We’re transplants, but my home is here during the summer months, and the spring and fall. We’ve done a lot of good things here.” The youngest trainer inducted into the Hall of Fame at the age of 45 in 1998, Mott has won a race on three consecutive days, getting No. 3,998 with Settling Seas on Thursday, also ridden by Desormeaux, and No. 3,999 on Friday with Avanta. Mott has won 363 career graded stakes, including five Breeders’ Cup races and this year’s Belmont Stakes

with Drosselmeyer, his first in a Triple Crown event. He earned the Eclipse Award as top trainer in 1995 and 1996, and trained champions Ajina, Cigar, Escena, Paradise Creek and Theatrical. “I’m a big fan of Billy Mott, and you can tell him that,” said West Point Thoroughbreds’ Terry Finley, whose horse Montana Knight defeated the Mott-trained Macho Joe in the fifth to delay history. “He’s a good man, and really great for the sport. He’s a real credit to the Thoroughbred industry.” Mott how has six wins from 29 starts at the meet, with three seconds and five thirds. After being presented with a placard by the New York Racing Association in honor of his achievement and posing for photographs, he was given a warm ovation from fans lining the winner’s cir-

cle. The gesture wasn’t lost on Mott. “I feel that all the time,” Mott said. “I feel it walking through the grandstand. You have a few (fans) that have torn up some tickets that aren’t too happy, but by the same token, the fans have always been very supportive of me. Frankly, when I get beat I feel disappointed for them.” A huge Yankees fan, Mott laughed when reminded that he reached his milestone much quicker than it took Alex Rodriguez to get his 600th career home run. “Maybe I had more help,” Mott said. “I couldn’t do this all by myself. I’ve had a lot of help along the way. It’s a great game, and a great competitive sport to be in. I couldn’t wish to do anything different.”

• It took awhile for Brother Bird to figure things out, but the half-brother to 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird continued his progress in Saturday’s opener. Trained by Todd Pletcher for Dogwood Stable, Brother Bird ran down pacesetter and 1-2 favorite Pistols At Dawn after following fractions of :22.43 and :44.73 and drew away to a 2 1/4-length victory. The win was the second straight for the Yonaguska colt, who broke his maiden at Belmont Park July 3. He made his debut at Saratoga last summer, finishing third in his only juvenile start. “He had some baby stuff and we had to give him some time off,” Pletcher said. “He’s come back and seems to be a better horse for it. I think he’s finally matured and learning how to finish off a race. Everything’s kind of going in the right direction. “Anytime you have a half-brother to a Derby winner with some pedigree, you have high expectations. Maybe he’s starting to live up to them now.” If Brother Bird runs back at Saratoga, it could be in a stakes. The Grade I King’s Bishop on Aug. 28 is a possibility. “We’ve got another horse for it (Aikenite), but it is conceivable,” Dogwood’s Ct Campbell said. “We like the timing. He hasn’t been precocious, but each race has been better. He ran a really nice race today. I’m proud of him.” • Count trainer Ed Barker as one of apprentice jockey Freddie Lenclud’s ever-growing fan base. See saturday page 22

Bet on the

Winner!

After 12 unsuccessful tries at breaking his maiden with 4-year-old Tapit gelding Pagan Ruler, Barker made two changes for Saturday’s second, taking off the blinkers and adding the 23-yearold Lenclud. “He is a really, really talented rider,” Barker said. “I”ve been watching him since I came up here, and I thought this kid would fit this horse perfectly. He’s got patience, he listens, he doesn’t get shook up, and he’s got good hands and good balance. And you know what? He’s only going to get better and better.” Lenclud came to Saratoga after being the leading apprentice at Oaklawn Park and Churchill Downs, finshing in the top 10 overall at both meets. He is 3-for-28 at the meet, winning the Grade III Schuylerville on Opening Day. “We wanted to come here if we had a good Churchill meet,” Lenclud said. “I’m pretty lucky to be here. It’s a very good place to be, with the best riders. It’s been a lot of hard work for me. I have to be out every morning and breeze as many horses so I can get the most mounts possible.” • Jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan escaped serious injury when he was kicked by his mount, a 4-year-old first-time starter named Cincinnati Kid, before the third race. Bridgmohan, 22, the younger brother of journeyman Shaun Bridgmohan, was struck in the ribs as he went to climb aboard. Bridgmohan lay motionless but conscious on his back next to the paddock fence as he was treated by emergency medical personnel. Fans lining the fence cheered and applauded as he was carried out on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance. Taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, Bridgmohan was released early Saturday evening and cleared by doctors to return to riding. Replaced on his mount in Saturday’s finale by Maylan Studart, he has one scheduled for today. A late scratch, Cincinnati Kid had seven published workouts at Saratoga prior to his debut.

• Saturday’s perfect weather, sunny and cool with a slight breeze, had everyone feeling good, including the horses. Especially the 2-year-olds. During the post parade for the sixth race, Justin Phillip, trained by Steve Asmussen for Zayat Stables, dumped jockey Garrett Gomez on the clubhouse turn, wheeled and ran off past the grandstand and into the backstretch, where he proceeded to jump a fence into the barn area before being caught. The post parade also saw Javier Castellano get tossed by his mount, the Chad Brown-trained Tiz Blessed, but the jockey was able to land on his feet and quickly climb back aboard. Tiz Blessed went on to win the race, Brown’s 10th of the meet. As the doors were opened to start the 6 1/2-furlong maiden sprint, Thatcatismine reared up and stood in the gate for a moment, unseating jockey John Velazquez. After regaining his feet, the Mineshaft colt galloped up the backstretch, where he was caught without incident by an outrider. • Security had a hard time keeping people out of the winner’s circle after the fifth race. A mass of humanity surged through the iron gates after West Point Thoroughbreds’ Montana Knight caught favored Macho Joe and pulled away for a 1 1/4-length win. It was the first win in eight tries at the meet for West Point, a syndicate known for its distinctive yellow silks with a black star, and some of the largest winner’s circle photos ever seen. “There are 15 partners in this one, but a lot of people are here because we’re running three today,” Finley said. “It’s tough to keep people out when you get the momentum of them coming into the winner’s circle. I do know one thing. The track photographer really likes it when we win.” West Point finished off the board with Bellhouse in the fourth race, and third with Belle Of The Hall in the Grade I Test. “It’s very good to get off the schneid,” Finley said. “When you run eight or nine, you expect to get off the duck. I think it would be pretty tough to go 0-for-15 or 18 up here as a stable, especially as a partnership. It’s always good to win one at Saratoga.”

I was full of anticipation. I could not wait to get to the racetrack. I paced the paddock. My mouth was dry. I had a knot in my stomach. But I was in awe of my horse. My heart pounded. I thought the gates would never open. I thought the pace was too fast. I thought the jockey moved too soon. I thought we still had a chance. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I pumped my fists. I jumped for joy. I won! I hugged my family. I thought my dad would be proud. I congratulated my partners. I called my friends. I lost my voice. I stood in the winner’s circle. I celebrated. that night, i dreamed of doing it all over again…”

ALFRED G. VANDERBILT STAKES PREVIEW

Mr. Versatility Mambo Meister tackles sprinting in tough Grade I BY JOE CLANCY Meet Mambo Meister. He’s a turf horse, he’s a dirt horse. He’s a two-turn specialist, he’s a late-running sprinter. And he’s back at Saratoga, trying to make an impact in a major stakes. Last year, Quantum Racing Team’s star pupil finished second in the Fourstardave and fifth in the Bernard Baruch, Grade II turf stakes won by the streaking Justenuffhumor. This time around, the 5-year-old son of King Cugat takes on classy sprinters in today’s Grade I Alfred G. Vanderbilt. After 28 lifetime starts around two turns, trainer Phil Gleaves dropped Mambo Meister to 6 furlongs and he responded with a late-running second behind Vanderbilt rival Big Drama in the Grade II Smile at Calder July 10. “I’d been waiting to turn him back,” Gleaves said Saturday morning while his horse prepared for a light gallop at Saratoga. “We’ve often wanted to try it,

but we never had the right opportunity. The Smile came along – at home, huge purse ($350,000), seemed like a logical time to try.” Mambo Meister responded, dropping well off a fast pace and closing late to lose by 1 1/2 lengths. Manoel Cruz comes north from Florida to ride the 12-1 shot, who will have to improve again to threaten in a strong field led by 5-2 favorite Bribon and co-second choices (3-1) Big Drama and Majesticperfection in a field of seven. The Vanderbilt is the ninth of 10 races on Sunday’s card with a post time of 5:30 p.m. Bribon comes off a win in the Grade II True North at Belmont June 5 and joins Mambo Meister in the off-thepace sprinter category for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Garrett Gomez. After trying longer races (including the Preakness) last year, Big Drama returned as a sprinter and carries a 2-for-2 record this year. The son of Montbrook is unbeaten in four starts at the distance for trainer David Fawkes. Eibar Coa takes the return call. Majesticperfection (Shaun Bridgmohan) rides a four-race winning streak for trainer Steve Asmussen. Unraced at 2 and 3, the son of Harlan’s Holiday comes off a runaway See Vanderbilt page 27

score in the Iowa Sprint Handicap at Prairie Meadows June 25. The 4-yearold covered 6 furlongs in 1:07 1/5. Others in the contentious group are Gayego (Alan Garcia, 4-1), Temecula Creek (Cornelio Velasquez, 20-1) and Smokey Fire (Javier Castellano, 8-1). Six of the seven are stakes winners, three are millionaires and five won their most recent starts. Gleaves does not anticipate an easy race, though he does expect a solid effort from his throwback horse. Mambo Meister owns stakes victories on dirt

and turf and came within 2 lengths of winning last year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (on a synthetic track). The gleaming bay with the “turf feet” and powerful hind legs races in a simple bridle – ring bit, no nose band – at whatever track or distance Gleaves and Quantum’s Ray Juliano choose. Gleaves believes Thoroughbreds are more versatile than they get credit for being. “Most horses you can do that with, you don’t need a special type of pedigree to do it,” he said. “It’s more a product of how they are trained rather than the pedigree or something else. (Legendary breeder Federico) Tesio said it’s not how far they run, it’s how fast they run. A sprinter, given a slow pace can go a

Both told him to buy. First of all, Mambo Meister has the Rasmussen Factor – a Thoroughbred breeding term that traces inbreeding to superior female families. The dam Special appears in the fifth generation of both sides of Mambo Meister’s pedigree. She is the dam of Nureyev, who sired Miesque, who produced Kingmambo, the sire of King Cugat. She is also the dam of Fairy Bridge, who produced Sadler’s Wells, the sire of Desert Secret, who is the sire of Bleu’slittlesecret. “I said ‘Hmm, this might be a nice horse,’ and I went to see him,” Juliano recalled. “He was 2 weeks old and I loved him. His coat always looked the See Vanderbilt page 28

mile and conversely, a miler, given a fast past, can get up sprinting. It’s all about pace, not about the distance.” To prove that point, look at Mambo Meister’s races. Going a mile or more, he’s up close. Going short, he’s well toward the back. His career includes 16 starts (six wins, $332,000) on dirt, 12 starts (three wins, $185,000) on turf. All surfaces, he’s 9-for-29 with more than $548,000 in the bank. Not bad for an afterthought. Mambo Meister’s breeder, J. R. Cavanaugh bought the horse’s dam Bleu’slittlesecret at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky’s winter mixed sale in 2005 for $5,200. Cavanaugh wanted a broodmare, not a foal, so called Juliano, who said “send me a picture and send me a pedigree.”

Yearling partnership closes Sept 15, 2010

Three elegant tales filled with horses as complicated and spirited as their human counterparts, these are inspiring stories of courage and hope and the ways in which all love — even a horse’s — has the power to heal.

way it looks now. He never had that scruddy, baby coat. He was in the paddock with two other babies and he was the boss. I always like the boss.” Juliano called a few friends, turned on the sales pitch and bought a racehorse. The partnership also includes Chris Pallas and Dominic DiBellis among others. “The rest is what it is,” Juliano said. “Amazing. It doesn’t always happen this way, for sure, but here we are. I like to surround myself with lucky people, maybe that’s it.” After his Saratoga turf tries last summer, Mambo Meister won the Grade III Spend A Buck on the dirt at Calder and then finished fifth – beaten 2 lengths –

behind Furthest Land in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. This year, the path to Saratoga included a third in the Grade III Fort Lauderdale at Gulfstream, a fourth behind Quality Road in the Grade I Donn, and two Grade III stakes scores at Calder – one on dirt, one on turf. After the Smile, Mambo Meister got a short break and shipped north. He’s been a Saratoga stakes barn resident for two weeks and prepped with a steady stream of gallops and a 3-furlong blowout in 36 seconds Monday. “I didn’t just want to sprint him once, I wanted to make sure he go to do it twice,” said Gleaves. “We’re here now, we’ve turned him back, let’s do it again. I think he’ll move forward from that last sprint. I’m just trying to keep him fresh and happy.”

HONORABLE MISS STAKES PREVIEW

Pretty Does McPeek filly ready for Grade II sprint BY SEAN CLANCY

Maggie Kimmit

Pretty Prolific, a new runner for Ken McPeek, tries her hand in the Honorable Miss today.

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Ken McPeek stood under a tree outside the gap of the Oklahoma training track Saturday morning, waiting for Pretty Prolific, third choice in today’s Grade II Honorable Miss Stakes. Walter Blum Jr., sat still as a water glass on top of a tray, as the chestnut filly bounced home from a light exercise. “You all right?” McPeek asked. “Very good,” Blum said. “She’s ready.” Excuse McPeek for asking but he’s new to Pretty Prolific’s party. Transferred to the trainer this summer, the 4-year-old filly has breezed three times

(two bullets) at Saratoga as she tries to rebound from three consecutive losses, including a tough beat in the Grade I Humana Distaff in her most recent start. “She’s been easy. Piece of cake. Very strong mare to handle, she gives her riders all they can handle in the morning,” McPeek said. “She’s workmanlike, ‘let’s do it,’ every day she puts a lot into her gallops and works.” Pretty Prolific finished second in the Test last year and handled Warbling in the Sugar Swirl at Fair Grounds this winter. She returned to finish fourth (Warbling beat her both times) in her next two starts before a big effort in the Humana Distaff, a race in which she defeated defending Eclipse Award winner Informed Decision but settled for secSee Honorable Miss page 30

ond behind Mona De Momma. McPeek watched Pretty Prolific coil her way across Fifth Avenue and into the Annex, she’s mad and he’s happy. “She’s mad, we didn’t do a whole lot with her today. She’s a strong, serious mare, she’s been good up here, she’s already proven she can run against better fillies,” McPeek said. “She’s done everything right in our barn, she acts like she’s any kind. We’re using this as a setup to the next one, we’re hoping to get her a Grade I win, she’s been second in a couple of them. But this is a prep for the Ballerina.” Some prep. Today’s Honorable Miss attracted just five entries. Try to split them. Warbling, Hour Glass and Secret Gypsy own Grade II victories. Pretty Prolific finished second in last year’s Test. One Smokin’ Lady hasn’t finished worse than second in her last eight starts. Eddie Kenneally, who trains Warbling, knows what’s in store. “It’s a small field but a quality field,” he said Saturday morning. “She’s won Grade II stakes before, she’s live. Todd Pletcher’s hard to beat anywhere you go, he’s got a nice filly. Ronny Werner’s filly is solid and of course Pretty Prolific.” Warbling fits. The 4-year-old daughter of Unbridled’s Song won the Grade II Inside Information this winter at See Honorable Miss page 31

Warbling is also part of a tough, be it small, Honorable Miss field this afternoon.

Gulfstream Park, flopped in the Humana Distaff and then rebounded with a second in the Princess Rooney during Calder’s Summit of Speed July 10. That day, she hit the lead, looked home free, then was caught late by Jessica Is Back. Kenneally hasn’t gotten over that one. “I was disappointed because she opened up and was still in front at the eighth pole and looked like she was still full of run so I actually was disappointed because I thought we had it won,” Kenneally said. “If you look at the day’s racing you’ll see there were quality horses shipped there and none of them won. It was all locally based horses, D’funnybone ran there at 1-9 and got beaten, on paper, you couldn’t have seen him getting beaten, so I attribute it to the track. It’s a good, safe track but you’re at a disadvantage if you ship in, the locally based horses have an edge, I’m not complaining, it’s just the way it is.” Kenneally regrouped and aimed at the Honorable Miss, a month after the Princess Rooney. The $260,000 yearling purchase breezed twice over the training track since arriving in Saratoga. “She’s been a solid filly for us this year. She ran a big race at Calder, it’s a tough place to ship and run and she ran quiet well considering everything,” Kenneally said. “She’s trained well here, I’m real happy with her. You don’t have to ship, your horse has an opportunity to run its best race, we feel like she did not

run her best race at Calder. She’s done everything right since then and has had no ill effects about being down there.” Todd Pletcher tries to bolster his Saratoga stakes cache with Hour Glass, winner of five races from 10 starts, including two out of her last four. The daughter of Petionville won the Grade II Vagrancy Handicap in May and then was stymied in the Princess Rooney, winding up sixth nearly 5 lengths off of Warbling. Ronny Werner sends out Secret Gypsy, winner of six races from 15 starts. The daughter of Sea Of Secrets makes her ninth consecutive stakes experience, she exits a victory in the Saylorville Stakes at Prairie Meadows in her most recent start. Butch Reid ships One Smokin’ Lady to Saratoga from her Mid-Atlantic base. The 4-year-old filly won the Day Lilly at Penn National in her most recent start when trained by Tim Ritchey. Owned by Cash Is King Stable, the daughter of Smoke Glacken has finished first or second in her last eight starts and has been off the board once in 13 starts. Anna Napravnik travels from Delaware Park to partner the 12-1 shot.

Check Me

cupofcoffee by Sean Clancy

Life is a checklist – 15 down, 20 to go. That’s where the Saratoga Special stands for 2010. This is the last page of the last paper of 12 in a row, completed over sales week. Sunday night, we sleep. Monday night, we sleep. Back on the horse Tuesday. By then, the sales crowd will be long gone down the Northway, heading back to Lexington, Versailles, Ocala, Ireland and England. We’ll miss you, thanks for the jumper cables, it’s been a wild two weeks. Freddie Lenclud turned Saratoga into an instant success when he won the Schuylerville on opening day with Le Mi Geaux, then nearly lost his career when falling off the OTB set. The French bugboy, nicknamed the Mosquito, has won three races at the meet. Not bad for a kid whose other choice was Ellis Park for the summer. Lenclud learned the game in France, he’s adjusting to the game in America. “It’s a different styles. They don’t have time here, because the track closes. France, the track stays open until 1, it’s all done at training centers,” Lenclud said. “We don’t have grooms or hotwalkers, we do everything. You only get three or four out at the most. One set is an hour, hour and a half, here it’s 10, 15 minutes, go, go, go.” A day later, Devil May Care took another step toward a clash with Blind Luck by dominating the Coaching Club American Oaks for John Velazquez, Todd Pletcher and owner John Greathouse. The latter is en-

joying the ride and justifying the decision to run her in the Kentucky Derby. “You give extraordinary horses a chance to do extraordinary things. I do think she’s that kind of filly,” Greathouse said. “We’ve seen this filly train and do some things that set her apart from a lot of horses. The ease of which she goes to horses, the ease in which she works with other horses or by herself; it seems to be a big game to her, she’s forever flicking her ears, like, ‘OK I’m in front, now what do I do?’ ” Look out Blind Luck. Arthellor Scisney added perspective and dream to Saratoga when his homebred, Maybesomaybenot upset the Sanford. This is a blue-blooded sport, but sometimes the horses don’t know the difference. Timothy Snyder, Kathleen Feron added to the underdog theme. On a Quiet Monday, Javier Castellano electrified Saratoga by winning five races – in a row. Yawkey Way, Cody Samora, Desert Key, Fiddler’s Chaparito and Stand Proud will forever be linked – at least in Castellano’s book. Slowly climbing the ladder, Castellano is officially on the roof of the New York jockey colony. It’s a cold game; watching the constant changing of the guard. In the span of this newspaper, we’ve watched the keys change hands from Jerry Bailey to Edgar Prado to John Velazquez to Cornelio Velasquez to Alan Garcia to Ramon Dominguez and now back to Velazquez and Castellano. As Velazquez says, “It’s much tougher to stay at the top than to get to the top.” Castellano will find out as he battles Velazquez for the lead. Turf racing has been as strong as ever this summer; Roger Attfield showed us how it’s done in Canada by sweeping the Lake George with Perfect Shirl and the De La Rose with Miss Keller. He’s not finished yet. Barclay Tagg dusted off the prettiest horse on the grounds when

Beau Choix got there just in time in the Quick Call. Proviso, Shared Account and Forever Together led a fiveway photo in the Diana; none should have lost. For a weekend, Tony Dutrow appeared to have the keys to the Travers. A Little Warm stamped his papers by dominating the Jim Dandy. “Every race, no matter what, he’s shown up, no matter what distance, what jockey, what racetrack, nothing has ever mattered to him,” Dutrow said. Dutrow’s Winslow Homer came back the next day to do the same thing when he dominated the Curlin. The joy didn’t last long as the latter cracked another bone which will force another vacation. Talent goes so far, but no further without soundness. Two nights of sales further solidified the fact that racing is the grip of the fractured economy. Fasig-Tipton raised $32 million. Last year they raised $52 million. Gulp. Discreetly Mine continued his prowess in the sprint division, winning the Amsterdam with ease, making you wonder how he ran as well as he did in the Derby. Divine Fortune proved that jumpers do train like Thoroughbred turning in a bullet drill before winning the A.P. Smithwick. Then Blame and Al Stall upended Quality Road by clawing past the favorite in the Whitney. Stall had his biggest victory and Blame had a spot driving the bus to the Breeders’ Cup. Stall added perspectives. “Life is how it is, I’m happy, I’ve made a good career for the last 20 years, we’ve done well with what we’ve had,” Stall said before the Whitney. “This horse isn’t hard to deal with, he’s not hard to train, it’s no surprise that he’s here. You’ve got to take the opportunity that’s handed you. Here we are, we’re going to try to have a good time and leave it to the horse.” See you Wednesday.
