CAB CALLOWAY STAKES PREVIEW
On a Mission Sackatoga eyes hometown stakes score with hard-luck Seattle Mission BY MIKE KANE Consider Seattle Mission a perfect example of the uncertainty that is part of owning and racing horses. In his debut last summer at Saratoga, the New York-bred son of Strategic Mission beat open company maidens, including one named Drosselmeyer, who went on to win the Belmont Stakes. Nearly 12 months later, Jack Knowlton and his large group of Sackatoga Stable partners in the colt are hoping victory No. 2 comes this afternoon in the $100,000 Cab Calloway division of the New York Stallion Stakes. Seattle Mission, trained by Barclay Tagg, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in a field of 10 that will go 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf course (today’s fifth race). “You get what you think is a real nice horse and stuff happens,” Knowlton said. “But Barclay thinks that he’s got a good future as a stakes horse going forward. Hopefully he can prove that (today). We won this race two years ago with Doc N Roll. We’d like to do it again.”

The competition in the Cab Calloway, open to progeny of New York-based stallions, includes Lubash, a Freud colt bred and owned by Aliyu Ben J Stable, who has a pair of wins from six starts and has been competitive in open company. Seattle Mission’s 2009 season started and ended with that maiden victory Aug. 16. “He ran big here last year and we thought he had a big future,” Knowlton said. “We were ready to go to a stake with him last year and then he got hurt. He had a little hairline crack in a leg, so we had to back off and he was off nine months.” The colt was healthy, fit and ready to resume his racing career this spring, but the schedule ended up being scrapped and rewritten. “We were deeply disappointed because our year was supposed to start with the stallion series race for $75,000 going 7 furlongs in May, but it didn’t fill,” Knowlton said. “They put the girls See Cab Calloway page 8

The best-laid plans sort of messed us up.” Seattle Mission did make it to the races May 29, where he finished second to Spa City Fever in an allowance race at Belmont. A month later, he was the beaten favorite again, this time by three-quarters of a length to Duke Of Naples. Knowlton and the Sackatogans – there are between 30 and 40 partners in this colt – were poised to celebrate following the first race on Saratoga’s Opening Day, July 23, but their charge finished third, beaten a neck. Ramon Dominguez will replace Cornelio Velasquez today “He came and ran a huge race at Belmont, his first race back,” Knowlton said. “Then he got caught at the wire in the second race back. He got a little wide trip here in the last race.” Knowlton has owned Thoroughbreds since the mid-1990s, including
Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide, and Standardbreds before that, so he understands that there are no guarantees in racing. Seattle Mission hasn’t missed the board in his four starts, but he was expected to have accomplished more than that. “We’ve not had the best of luck with this horse,” Knowlton said. “After winning the race he got hurt and the race we wanted to go to as a comebacker didn’t fill. Then we’ve had three tough beats. Hero of 2003, Funny Cide enjoys reunion visit to Spa
BY PHIL JANACK Seven years after taking the sport by storm, and more than three years into retirement, Funny Cide still knows how to draw a crowd. Fans stood five and six deep around the paddock fence late Sunday morning to get a glimpse of the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, who capped off a week-long stay in upstate New York with a visit to Saratoga Race Course. Led by John Veague, farrier at the Kentucky Horse Park Hall of Champions, where the 10-year-old chestnut gelding now resides, Funny Cide spent a half-hour circling the path inside the paddock, stopping frequently to pose for photographs. Jack Knowlton, the managing partner of owner Sackatoga Stable, sporting his Derby-winning tie and familiar wide, toothy grin, walked alongside, beaming at the sight of his old friend. “He looks great,” Knowlton said. “He’s obviously a hometown hero, a New York hero, and a national hero. All the way walking him in, people wanted us to stop and take pictures. Just seeing the reception he’s getting here, it makes See Notebook page 14

you feel good.” Owned by a group of high school pals from tiny Sackets Harbor, N.Y., on the shores of Lake Ontario, Funny Cide came one win away from taking the Triple Crown, and made a household name for himself and his connections. “We had him up in Sackets Harbor last Saturday, and it was fabulous,” Knowlton said. “There were probably 1,000 people there, and the whole town’s only 1,400.The guys and I were signing stuff for two hours straight. It was just amazing. It was something we always wanted to do, and we were finally able to get it done.” Its most famous graduate, Funny Cide was also a special guest at FasigTipton’s annual state-bred sale. “Just people knowing he’s in town, having a Derby champion that’s a New York-bred, that’s important,” Knowlton said. “There were probably a hundred people there that wanted to get up and have their picture with him, and we did it. It’s something they’ll remember forever.” Funny Cide’s trainer, Barclay Tagg, and assistant Robin Smullen also stopped by to see their old horse, who worked as a stable pony for three years before heading off to Kentucky. His regular rider, Jose Santos, who has the book for jockey Fernando Jara at Delaware Park, was unable to attend. “He looks beautiful,” Tagg said.
• Trainer Lisa Lewis, back in New York after several seasons in California, has 3-year-old Piscitelli on the comeback trail at Saratoga. Unraced since being injured in the Grade III Holy Bull and missing the Triple Crown this year, he was fourth in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Piscitelli has had two works at Saratoga, going 3 furlongs in 37.42 seconds July 28, and a half-mile in 49.77 Aug. 5. “He hadn’t breezed since I got him,” Lewis said. “I couldn’t be happier with him. He looks great, but I think it would be pushing it to think he can make this meet.”

Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra got back to work at Saratoga Monday with a 6-furlong breeze over the Oklahoma training track. The 2009 Horse of the Year covered the distance in 1:12.96 and finished with a big pat on the neck from jockey Shaun Bridgmohan. • After calling 3-year-old filly Quippery to the wire first in the sixth race Aug. 6, track announcer Tom Durkin made his way down from the booth for a rare appearance in the winner’s circle. The 5 1/2-furlong maiden turf sprint was named in honor of Durkin’s childhood friend Greg “Grubby” Drevs, who died Aug. 23, 2009 at the age of 59. Durkin took some personal time away from Saratoga to fly to Chicago for the funeral. He was joined in the winner’s circle photo by several of Drevs’ friends from the Midwest. “He was my oldest friend,” Durkin said. “We named a race after him, and about 20 of his friends came up from Chicago. It was nice having them all there. It was a happy thing.”

A couple of well-named horses with nothing in common turned in some shout-worthy performances during Monday’s steamy program at Saratoga Race Course. Dubai Dancer romped in the third, 7 furlongs on the dirt for maiden 3-yearolds and up, by 7 lengths. The full-sister to Ashland winner Little Belle trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, might be one to watch. About 2 1/2 hours later, Western Tease prevailed in the seventh, a starter allowance for horses who have run for a claiming tag of $16,000 or less this year. A gang of folks celebrated as the Suffolk Downs shipper ran his record to 7-0. Most years, someone swoops in from Boston to score at Saratoga. This year’s edition can’t quite match Lisa’s Booby Trap for back story, but he’s getting there and scored with a determined drive in the stretch. Dubai Dancer, bred and owned by Darley, is a daughter of A.P. Indy out of the Mr. Prospector mare Dubai Belle.
She sat a little off the pace under Ramon Dominquez, moved to challenge favored Arena Elvira on the turn and just continued on. The chart footnotes described her as “drew off impressively while confidently handled.” Indeed. It was her second career start. She finished seventh in her debut at Aqueduct on January 10. “We’ve always really liked this filly,” McLaughlin said. “Richard Migliore rode her the first time and she was real green and bolted almost and then came running. He told me he thought she was a graded stakes filly. We gave her time off and brought her back and she ran like a graded stakes filly today, even though it was just a maiden race. She was very impressive. We’ll look to run back in a (first level allowance) here at the end of the meet or at Belmont. Then we might try to look for stakes later because she is a stakes filly.” Dubai Dancer completed her assignment in 1:23.74. mate Channel. • You could say that trainer Bill Sienkewicz was a little bit happy after Western Tease scored in Monday’s seventh, a $45,000 starter allowance going 6 1/2 furlongs. “I’m on Cloud Nine,” said the trainer, who was given the horse as an unraced 3-year-old. “The horse needed time off and I gave him time off before I started him the first time. Never look a gift horse in the face.” Based at Suffolk Downs, Sienkewicz started Western Tease in a bottom-level claimer and has steadily worked his way toward the top with five wins at the home course and another at Delaware Park heading into Monday. Now owned by Anthony Spadea, Western Tease raced for trainer Mike Gorham at Saratoga but has been Sienkewicz’s project. “I brought him into Boston at the end of the meet because I thought things would be easy,” Sienkewicz said. “I had no idea what I had at that point in time and that’s why I ran him for a nickel ($5,000). When I ran him for $12,500 and he ran in (1:10.68) I knew I had a racehorse.” In most of his races, Western Tease has been beating up on the competition. He picked up a total of four wins by a combined 19 lengths in a 30-day span last fall at Suffolk, won an allowance/ optional claimer by 7 1/2 lengths on June 30 and took a starter allowance at Delaware Park on July 15

“I was kind of pointing him toward the starters,” Sienkewicz said. “This was kind of a step up from $5,000 starters, but I thought it would be an easier start, to be perfectly honest. I thought the race came up very tough. Sooner or later, the horse was going to have to look somebody in the eye and they were going to ask him the question. It was a matter of whether he was going to answer it. He’s never had to run from the eighth pole in all those races. He’s always been in front at the eighth pole.”

Western Tease did have the answer on Monday and battled Jack On The Rocks through the stretch of the 6 1/2-furlong dirt race to win by a neck. • In the fourth, Peter Callahan’s Bigshot broke through with a maiden victory in his 10th attempt. The 3-year-old Limestone colt trained by Kenny McPeek has been competitive, with three seconds and two thirds, and got his victory with an off-the-pace run in the 9-furlong turf race.
Swettenham Stud’s Changing Skies picked up her third American victory with a swooping late move in Monday’s feature, the $70,000 Signature Stallions Waya Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf. Trained by Bill Mott, the 5-yearold came from last in the field of five to take over from fellow Irish import Liberally in the stretch and win by 2 1/4 lengths over Casablanca Smile in 2:27.46 for the 1 1/2 miles on the inner turf. Bred by Swettenham, the 6-5 co-favorite exited back-to-back graded-stakes placings behind Lady Shakespeare – in the Bewitch at Keeneland and the New York at Belmont Park. Before that she won The Very One (Gr. III) at Gulfstream Park in February. The daughter of Sadler’s Wells began her career in Europe, winning once and placing in a Group III for trainer Brian Meehan.
“He’s taken a long time to develop,” McPeek said. “He was a good solid 2-yearold, he’s been a good 3-year-old and it just seemed like he always needed more time. He kept coming. We felt like we could win our share before the summer and we’ve got two more books to do it in.” • Hot Money edged Strong Impact by a neck in the sixth, an allowance/optional claiming turf sprint for New Yorkbreds. The homebred Not For Love gelding trained by Christophe Clement sat well off a wild early pace of 21.29 and 43.94 set by Goodandacceptable. Strong Impact made what looked to be a winning move and seized the lead in the stretch, but Hot Money had the better late kick and got the top prize. Hot Money improved to 4-1-1 from nine starts and gave Clement his first victory of the meet. “He’s a lovely horse, a very consistent horse,” Clement said. “I’m delighted because he belongs to Charles and Susan Harris, who have been supporting me forever.” The setup was perfect for the chestnut and jockey Rajiv Maragh. “It was a great pace scenario,” Clement said. “Rajiv rode a good race. He did not panic. He waited and made one run. Obviously it worked.” • The afternoon started with Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Risque winning a $25,000 maiden claimer in his first start in nearly a year. Leparoux in the 1 1/16-mile turf race, came on to challenge the pacesetter Cozy Lion and won by 1 1/2 lengths. “He’s been showing some speed in the morning,” trainer Mike Maker said. “Julien had him in a good position throughout and had some horse left when he needed it.” • Dr. John Chandler’s homebred Mizzen Mast filly Button Girl got the job done in the second, a turf sprint for 2-year-old maiden fillies. She broke on top, led the way and won by 2 1/2 lengths for Cornelio Velasquez. Trainer Ralph Nicks said the filly had
done well while being prepped at the farm and at Keeneland. “They said they liked her from the word go,” he said. “Dr. Chandler has loved her and watched her train at Keeneland every day. She’s made no mistakes and got the job done.” Nicks said the filly arrived in his care about two weeks ago and was ready for action. “It’s been straightforward,” he said. “We brought her in, blew her out and schooled her in the paddock. I thought she would run well, but maybe she ran a little better than expected. With first timers you never know.”
• The Underling came up the rail under Robby Albarado to win the eighth for owner-breeder Alex Campbell, Jr. and trainer Rusty Arnold. First-time starter Higher Desire captured the finale, outfinishing Dogwood Stable’s Ginger Snapit, who ran greenly in the stretch, probably costing herself the victory. Higher Desire is a homebred daughter of Hook And Ladder trained by Linda Rice for owners Chester and Mary Broman. “She’s shown some promise in her workouts,” Rice said. “Obviously, it went well today. She doesn’t need the lead. She finishes well.”

Majesticperfection rolls in sprint stakes
BY SEAN CLANCY Padua’s Stable’s Sasha Sanan watched Majesticperfection walk out of the paddock for Sunday’s Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap; part parent, part fan, Sanan stood in amazement. “Look at him,” he said. “I ALFRED G. wouldn’t trade VANDERBILT with anybody.” No need. STAKES A blueprint of RECAP a sprinter, Majesticperfection broke like he was out of prison and never looked back, dominating six rivals to win the $250,000 stakes by 2 3/4 lengths over Big Drama, Bribon and Gayego. The first four finishers came home in the direct order of their odds; the $2 superfecta (first, second, third, fourth choices in order) paid $92.40. Owned by Padua Stable and trained by Steve Asmussen, Majesticperfection improved his career record to 5-for-6 by winning his fifth start in a row. The Grade I Vanderbilt came easily. Under Shaun Bridgmohan, Majesticperfection brushed the side of the gate but still outbroke the field by a half-length and opened a secure advantage in a matter of strides. After a quarter in 22.80 seconds and a half in 45.60, Majesticperfection turned for home in complete control as Big Drama tried to rally and Bribon began to close ground from the back. Bridgmohan flicked his whip like he was shooing flies and it was all over. Majesticperfection won easily and galloped out with his ears pricked after 6 furlongs in 1:08.63. Sanan, watching from the fourth row of the clubhouse boxseats, smacked his rolled-up program in his hand harder than Bridgmohan used his whip. “Come on Bridge. Come on Bridge. Come on Bridge. Come on Bridge,” Sanan yelled as Majesticperfection sprinted past the furlong pole. By the time he hit the wire, Sanan had turned and high-fived his father Satish, bloodstock agent David Ingordo and Glennwood Farm’s Tanya Gunther. “Now, that’s fast,” Sasha Sanan said. “That’s the way they’re supposed to run,” Satish Sanan said. Sold for $370,000 at OBS April, 2008, Majesticperfection took a while to repay Padua. Sent to John Shirreffs in California, the son of Harlan’s Holiday never made it to the races on the West Coast and came east to hook up with Asmussen. He made his debut at 4, at Fair Grounds and finished third. He hasn’t lost since, winning five races at as many racetracks. He broke his maiden at Fair Grounds in February, then won an allowance at Oaklawn Park and another at Churchill Downs. Asmussen shipped him to Prairie Meadows for his stakes debut where he posted his first quarter in 21 2/5 seconds, a half in 43 2/5 and finished three-quarters in 1:07 1/5. Now that’s fast. “The way he was in his last race, he was just unbe-

lievable. I was worried about whether he could run that well again. That’s a tough race to repeat. As soon as he left (the gate) I knew he was ready, the same as he was the last time,” Bridgmohan said. “His cruising speed is so good that he’s barely working hard and other horses are really working to stay with him. I like when he flips his ears up in the stretch. That’s a nice feeling. Unbelievable. Usually, when they are running that fast they aren’t as relaxed as he is.” Asmussen took his time with Majesticperfection – fearing ability and fragility would clash – he sent him home once and then put him into a long, steady legging-up program before he made his first start. He jogged and galloped for 60 days before he opened galloped. “He was really strong, heavy, and fast, he got body sore as could be, felt like you were about to tear him up. We turned him out, he came back a completely better horse,” Asmussen said. “Sasha actually worked for us for six months, it’s very comfortable talking to him about what you see and what you think, they believe in us. You look at him, how can he not be fast? He’s an impressive physical horse.” Majesticperfection has dominated on the front end
in his five victories, never coming under any pressure. Utilizing a low, efficient and powerful stride, Majesticperfection puts his rivals on the run from the beginning and has the rare ability to finish it off as well. In his five victories, he’s earned comments such as “opened up, exploded stretch, drew off, never roused and powered further ahead.” “It’s unbelievable, he’s playing around. His ears are going back and forth. Down the backside, he was just cruising, doing nothing, it’s effortless for him,” Bridgmohan said. “As long as I can sit there with a loose rein, he will keep going. If I have to fight with him then it’s not as good. I don’t think anybody could beat him if he runs like that. He was really on top of his game today. He was able to dictate, set his own pace and get into a rhythm.” Majesticperfection has more rhythm than Miles Davis. Asmussen isn’t surprised the horse runs fast – and relaxed – in his races. “He’s unbelievably easy to be around. He’s got a lot of confidence. I don’t know if he knows what he’s doing, the way he’s won, he doesn’t know they’re not an a-other-than and a two-other-than,” Asmussen said. “With that being said, he’s run four races in a row that are very good, I don’t think he’s getting better, I just think that’s as good as he is and hopefully we can maintain it. We space his races and hope for the same outcome.” One of two 4-year-olds in the Vanderbilt, Majesticperfection had earned $160,430 while his six rivals had combined to earn $5.1 million before the race. Patience by everybody involved has helped. “John had him first, to his credit, he realized he couldn’t quite get him over the hump out there,” Sasha Sanan said. “Waiting was the right thing to do for the horse so it made it a lot easier. I’m biased but I think the world of Steve as a horseman, when you have a horse with him, you speak the same language, things seem to fall into place. The horse has issues and Steve knows the fine line of knowing what’s too much and what’s not enough.” Majesticperfection will tell him the rest.

Shhhh Secret Gypsy extends fast comeback with Grade II score BY JOE CLANCY Ronny Werner went to the FasigTipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale in 2007 with fairly specific instructions from John Kuehl and Nathan Fox. “You’ve got a budget of $50,000 and we’d like to get a colt,” said the owners. Of course, Werner couldn’t find a colt that caught his eye and fit the budget, but Kuehl kept asking so Werner spent $10,000 for a filly and the rest is – well, the rest is Secret Gypsy. Three months after the sale, she won her debut at Saratoga (in a then-track record 1:03.26 for 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt). Sunday, she became a Saratoga stakes winner with a 2-length score in the $150,000 Honorable Miss (Gr. II). The winner ($6.10) picked up her seventh career victory and pushed her career earnings past $506,000 while getting the 6 furlongs in 1:09.82 for jockey Jamie Theriot. “You never know,” said Werner. “They’ve been great owners and have had some ups and downs with her, but she’s real good right now. They’ll never figure this game out with a machine and you’ll never figure out exactly where a good horse is going to come from.” The Honorable Miss drew a contentious field of five, with Warbling sent off as the 8-5 favorite, Secret Gypsy second choice at 2-1 and no starter higher than 8-1. Warbling broke awkwardly and wound up last at the start. Conversely, One Smokin’ Lady blasted out of the gate and took an immediate lead though fractions of 22.43 and 45.19 seconds. Racing for Fox’s Richland Hills Farm and Kuehl, Secret Gypsy set up just outside the leader and took over at the top of the stretch. The Kentucky-bred passed 5 furlongs in 57.04 seconds and won with-
out ever feeling pressure from runner-up Hour Glass, who was a neck in front of the unlucky Warbling in third. “I was very confident the whole way, she was pulling on me,” said Theriot. “Turning for home, my feet are on the dashboard, the one in front of me is riding, the ones behind me are riding. All she’s got to do is stay on her feet.” She did, and won for the second time in five starts this year. Secret Gypsy came into the Honorable Miss off a speedy win in the Saylorville at Prairie Meadows, where she needed just 1:08.28 to complete 6 furlongs while winning by 4 3/4 lengths. reer,” said Theriot. “She’s a very rapid filly, at one time she was one-dimensional, but now she can somewhat stalk. If they’re not going fast, she’ll be in front. The older she gets, the better she gets. She’s starting to relax in the morning.” In the Honorable Miss, Secret Gypsy ran back to the Prairie Meadows race and stamped herself a contender in the filly/mare sprint division. Theriot expected another big effort from the chestnut mare, who was also being aimed for a stakes at Monmouth Park. Werner and Theriot talked it over, and chose Saratoga. “We need to go to Saratoga, she’s right right now. She can’t get any better than what she is, it’s time you give her a chance against some good horses,” Theriot told the trainer. “She’s a nice filly, she showed a lot potential when she first started running, she got hurt, they gave her some time and she came back and had a second and two wins now.” Secret Gypsy started just once as a 2-year-old, but came back to capture two allowance races and finish second to future champion Informed Decision at Keeneland in 2008. She opened 2009 with a Grade II score in the Distaff at Aqueduct in March, then turned in two sub-par efforts – a ninth behind Informed Decision in the Humana Distaff on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs and a 10th on the turf here last summer. She emerged from the Saratoga race witih injuries to both knees and an ankle, perhaps sustained while stumbling leaving the gate. To recover, Secret Gypsy went all the way to Pegasus Equine Rehabilitation Center in Seattle, Wash.

Headed by Dr. Mark Dedomenico, the center includes a number of state-of-theart therapies and options. Secret Gypsy underwent surgery on the three joints, spent time in a hyperbaric chamber and rehabbed on a water treadmill among other treatments. She came back to Werner in March, finished third in a minor stakes at Turfway Park and fifth in another at Indiana Downs before placing second in the Grade III Winning Colors at Churchill May 3. “We were ready to quit,” said Fox. “They brought a vet out from Colorado State to operate on three joints and then she went into their program, which is designed to get horses back to the races quicker than the traditional ways. They did a great job, she got her confidence back in those first two races and she is sounder now than she has been her entire career.” NOTES: Secret Gypsy improved to 3-for-3 over the main track at Saratoga . . . She keyed a Prairie Meadows stakes sweep as Majesticperfection, who also won at the Iowa track June 25, took the Grade I Vanderbilt one race later.

NY-breds cap sales season The two-day Fasig-Tipton Preferred Sale concluded on Sunday with Repole Stable purchasing the sales-topper, a Tale Of The Cat colt, for $140,000 from Denali Stud. The second-highest priced horse of the New York-bred sale sold during the second session as well, when Crupi’s New Castle Farm went to $105,000 to secure a filly by Afleet Alex, consigned by Avandelle Farm. Buzz Chace signed a $100,000 ticket on behalf of longtime client West Point Thoroughbreds for a son of Half Ours, consigned Thorndale Farm. Hidden Brook purchased a filly by Speightstown, consigned by Paramount Sales, for $100,000. Fasig-Tipton reduced the number of yearlings offered in the Preferred Sale by 60, which helped reduce the RNA rate significantly. Last year, 91 horses did not reach their reserve, compared to 48 this year. Last year, the highest-priced yearling brought $275,000 while the high-
est-priced yearling this year fetched $140,000. The gross number decreased to $3.67 million, from $4.3 million in 2009, much of that number could be attributed to the lesser number of yearlings offered. The average slipped to $39,106, a decrease in 3.9 percent. The median increased to $30,000, a 11.1 percent jump from 2009. Prominent New York owners were in action. Repole Stable, NYRA’s leading owner in 2009, purchased four horses during the two sessions. Goldmark Farm, owner of 2009 Hopeful winner Backtalk, picked up five yearlings, including a filly by Officer who cost $80,000. Whitehall Stable bought two yearlings, including a A.P. Warrior colt for $85,000. Chace bought three yearlings over the two days. Carlos Martin bought four yearlings on behalf of longtime client Flying Zee Stable. McMahon Bloodstock picked up three yearlings. Alan Brodsky also picked up three new recruits.

I wasn’t going to write one of these until late in the meet, when The Saratoga Special officially concluded its 10th year. We’re halfway through – and with nothing else to write about – no time like the present. Ten seasons of the paper. Let that sink in. When we started, I was 31; fresh out of riding jump races, idealistic and impulsive. Now I’m 40; grounded after 10 years of real work, realistic and steady, well steadier. I’m a father. Seems like Joe was always a father. His boys have grown up like they were sneaking Miracle-Gro. When we started, Nolan was two months old, now he’s 9 years old When we started, Jack couldn’t spell backstretch, now he’s the mayor of it. When we started, Ryan begged for goggles, now he begs for the car keys. The boys have learned to get tips and they still haven’t learned not to listen to tips (that’s a lifelong goal for all of us). They’re the face of The Special, adding levity when we need it most. When we started, we weren’t sure this thing would fly. We had no budget, no investors, no bankroll and no idea of the workload. If it wasn’t for Sam Slater, a loyal friend and supporter of steeplechasing, we probably wouldn’t have made it back for the second year. We tried charging for the paper, that went well. Mark Hennig, Toadie Taylor, Benny Bell Williams, Charlie Boden, Kip Elser, Don Dean, Bill Person, Doc Richardson, Ken Ramsey, Neil Howard, Ron Anderson and other loyalists jumped on the bandwagon early and
A Decade Already kept us going. Eventually, you – the readers – accepted us and appreciated the product and the madness of the product. Our mistakes – too many to count – are just part of the deal, part of the reading process (like looking for Waldo). When we started, my old college roommate Paul Wasserman helped out. He was out of work and did anything and everything. Back then, we couldn’t transmit the paper to the printer via the Internet. Paul would drive it down on a disk and wait for it to print. He would return at dawn and kick me off the office floor to go deliver it in the morning. Nancy the Paper Lady was there the first year and still going strong. The first year, we were able to sign up for something called Roadrunner, that was as big as LA getting Gretzky. Now, we watch the races live on Twinspires – and bet – from the top of Broadway while the races go on without us. That’s crazy. The harness track went from run-down step-brother to coin-tingling slots parlor. Mike Flynn who ran the New York Horse Breeders at the time signed me up to host a seminar on VLTs. Promises in the distances, they’re still in the distance. The Annex went from mostly jumpers to barely jumpers. Turf sprints replaced turf marathons. The Chief provided awe and inspiration the first day and still does today. Lisa Lewis came and went and came back again. Bill Mott, Flying Zee Stable and Edgar Prado have stayed the course. Todd Pletcher went from having his foot in the door to kicking the door down. Bobby Frankel and P.G. Johnson had a tiff, and sadly, left us with so many quotes still to go. Point Given shocked us the first day and now he’s being inducted into the Hall of Fame, could it have been that long? Azeri gets inducted too, she provided
her own dose of Saratoga magic, I wrote a feature on her and somebody accused me of drinking the Wayne Lukas Kool-Aid, you had to be there for that one. A hired hand wrote a story early on in The Special’s history. The writer didn’t include a quote, recited history about the connections but no quotes. I asked the writer where he got all his information. “Google, dude,” he said. “It’s the greatest thing in the world. It’s all you need.” We fired the writer and should have bought stock in Google. Looking back on it, we should have bought stock in Apple too. It’s the only reason we could pull off a daily paper without an arsenal of staff. Perhaps we should have cancelled the paper and bought stock in Apple and Google. Oh, think of the fun we would have missed. We’ve rented houses all over Saratoga. There was the mansion on Union Avenue that leaked in the rain and nearly cooked my friend Mickey Preger when the air conditioning faltered. The porch parties made up for the heat in the attic. There was the office at the end of Broadway which used to be a gym (mirrors and all) and there was the time the roof fell in on Joe’s clothes. Ten hard years. Ten easy years. On Sunday, Majesticperfection won the Vanderbilt for Steve Asmussen. The win gave Asmussen a stakes win every year since he’s been here. He was new here in 2001, digging his cleat into the dirt, hoping to stay. So were we. “I didn’t know you weren’t around forever,” Asmussen said about the first year, when Cashier’s Dream won the Spinaway and The Special made its debut. Good to know we looked the part. Ten years later, it’s good to know we are a part.
